It’san exciting time here aswe approach the warmerweather, but things of coursewere looking pretty bleakduring the Covid lockdown.What was your experiencelike, getting through that?Ada Vox: The Covid lockdownwas rough for many differentreasons, but the fact that ithappened when I was on theverge of making big thingshappen for myself is what reallyput a damper on my moodthroughout the first half of thelockdown. I was just about togo on my second tour and wasin the planning phases of myfirst album, music videos, a talkshow, and so many wonderfulthings to finally move my lifeand career in the direction I hadalways dreamed of. The onlysaving grace through all of thiswas that I was lucky enough toKnown for her pristinely powerfulvocal chops, Ada Vox–Texas nativeand star of American Idol and Queenof the Universe–is serenading NewYorkers this summer.have my partner withme, so I didn’t haveto do it all alone.As far as TV dragqueens go, youhave had a reallyinteresting careerbecause you werenot on one of theflagship RuPaul’sDrag Race shows–but you were onWorld of Wonder’sQueen of the Universe andtwo seasons of AmericanIdol. And especially becauseof that latter show’s universalpopularity, you’ve probablybeen seen and are known bythousands more TV viewersthan the most popularqueens on Drag Race. Doyou feel like your fanbase ismore mainstream and lessniche than the RuGirls?This is an interesting one andit is something that crosses mymind quite a bit. Being on Idoldid allow me to be in front ofquite a mainstream audience.And whilst I don’t think it makesme less “niche” than the DragRace queens, I do think ithas allowed me more typesof opportunities that the DragRace girls might not get. Aswe all know, Drag Race hasbeen going on for quite a whilenow, but I still have people tellme that they had never evenseen a drag queen on TV untilthey saw me on AmericanIdol…much less a drag queenattempting to wiggle her wayinto the mainstream musicindustry since RuPaul with“Supermodel.”I think that I have the capabilityto draw in a much moremainstream fanbase becauseof what I do as a vocalist andmusician, but I do also wishthat the huge RPDR fanbasewould be more willing andready to jump on to supportqueens like me who haven’tbeen on the franchise, butstill have been working foryears–even before I was onIdol in drag–to make a careerfor ourselves outside of thefranchise.You are going to beperforming in our city thissummer, starting with aconcert at the soon-to-open,Daniel Nardicio-owned venueRed Eye NY on Thursday,June 30th.
