Cartoonist and ‘gnomologist’
publishes second Covid book
• By Rowan Sinclair
SUMNER cartoonist Henry
Sunderland, known for his
fascination with garden gnomes
and his book Lockdown Island
2020, has published a new
book, Cartoons vs COVID-19,
showcasing a collection of
his cartoons depicting New
Zealand’s challenges with
Covid-19.
Sunderland began his Covid
cartoons at the beginning of
lockdown in 2020, posting a new
one every day on social media
to keep record. The cartoons
received increasing attention and
popularity until demand for a
physical copy led to Sunderland
self-publishing Lockdown Island
2020, which contained all of
his cartoons from the start of
lockdown on March 26, to the
end on May 13.
Sunderland’s new book,
Cartoons vs COVID-19, continues
this trend, with daily cartoons
from August 18, 2021 to March
5, 2022, during which time New
Zealand had its second lockdown
to combat the Delta and Omicron
variants.
The book also includes a
foreword from Dr Ashley
LOCKDOWN: Cartoonist Henry Sunderland has a new book out, Cartoons vs COVID-19.
Bloomfield, who was the face of
New Zealand’s Covid response as
Director-General of Health.
Bloomfield describes receiving
a text every morning from
Sunderland with his newest
cartoon, and the insight and
humour they contained.
“Henry’s cartoons remind
us that, despite the pandemic,
we have so much to be grateful
for . . . we can take great hope
from the way we have responded
as a country; with kindness,
solidarity and – whenever
possible – a sense of humour,”
Bloomfield writes.
Sunderland said that, while he’s
sent a copy of the book to both
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern
and Bloomfield, he’s not in it for
fame.
“I’m 72, ego’s out the door. It’s
all about people,” he said. “I did
it to make people smile. To look
back, and have a reminder of
what we went through.
“I think it was my first real
chance, now that I’ve retired
from teaching and giving out all
the time, to do my own thing. My
inner self wanted to get all this
out, and I just wanted to do it,”
Sunderland said.
“Five, six hours some of those
cartoons took. It was hard going.”
Drawing cartoons and comics
to make people smile has been
a part of Sunderland’s life for
decades.
“How many have I done?
Thousands,” Sunderland said.
Last week it was an absolute pleasure
to attend the opening of Te Aratai
College’s campus on Aldwins Road.
The Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern,
was thrilled to have the privilege of
opening this amazing new facility –
and there were a huge number of selfies
taken! Together with Duncan Webb,
MP for Christchurch Central, we
handed over the Norman Kirk Award
for Manaakitanga, which will become
part of the new College’s awards system
to recognise student excellence.
It’s been a long journey through
the rebuild of Linwood College to
get to this point, and I’d really like
to acknowledge Dick Edmundson,
the principal at Te Aratai, for his
leadership, Finlay Laird the presiding
member of the Board of Trustees, and
Linda Rutland who has done amazing
work with the Linwood College
Foundation fundraising.
There’s been a great win for the
community in Cass Bay, where Cathy
Lum Webb and the Cass Bay Residents
Association have been advocating
for improved bus routes to help get
students to their local high school –
Cashmere High all the way over the hill
– without having to get up at 6.30am.
I’m told that some teenagers struggle
with that wake-up call.
Following a recent meeting with
myself and Regional Councillors Phil
Clearwater and Vicky Southworth,
ECan announced they’ll be trialling
adjusted timetables to help Cass Bay
students with faster connections and
less transfer time in Lyttelton. There’s
still more work to go but it’s good to
see a community voice being heard.
Kaituna Valley residents went to ECan
on Thursday to raise their concerns
about proposed industrial style feed
barns near Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora.
It’s a big change from traditional beef
and dairy practice in New Zealand,
with cattle indoors not in paddocks
and standing on straw all year round.
The residents want to have the consents
publically notified so they can have
their say and I fully support them.
Finally, it’s Matariki! This is the first
time we’ve recognised Matariki as a
public holiday, and I hope you all have
long weekends to remember.
‘Five, six hours some of those cartoons took’
CREATIVE: Two of Henry Sunderland’s gnomes celebrating
the day a gnome was sent into space, and Sunderland
with one of the road-cone vases. PHOTOS: FACEBOOK
• From page 1
“Strangely enough, it was when
I was in Antarctica in 1976, ’77, I
did a comic strip for The McMurdo
Sometimez (Antartica’s only
newspaper), I was the first one to
create a comic strip in Antarctica.
Then when I was in London,
I met with cartoonists for Punch
magazine, and that inspired me,
so it goes back until then.”
A historically influential
British satire magazine, Punch
helped coin the term ‘cartoon’ as
it is used today.
Sunderland is also known
for his varied creative work,
including teaching art and
design at Ara, beginning the
movement to put flowers in
traffic cones after the Februrary
22, 2011 earthquake, and his
interest in garden gnomes, or
‘gnomology’, which has led to
getting garden gnomes to both
the North and South poles, and
even inspired a garden gnome
getting sent into space.
Sunderland said that his
passion for garden gnomes has
been with him even longer than
illustrating cartoons.
“It started back when I left art
school in Wellington. I picked
up a garden gnome one day, and
someone said, ‘that’s not art’, and
that inspired me to find out more
about them.”
Following that, Sunderland
brought a garden gnome with
him when he went to the South
Pole in 1970s. The gnome,
Charlie, was caught in a fire
shortly after arriving and turned
as white as the icy landscape
around him, causing quite a stir
amongst the scientists at the
polar base.
Seeing this, Sunderland
couldn’t help but become a
self-described gnomologist
and spend his creative time
promoting garden gnomes as
friendly reminders to take better
care of the environment.
“Since then, we’ve had one to
the North Pole, we’ve had them
to most places around the world,
as a symbol to mean GNOME:
‘Guarding Naturally Over
Mother Earth’,” he said.
Basil, 80, and working 40 hours a week
• By Susan Martin
AT AN AGE when most of us
have hung up the gloves – Basil
Plato is out the door to full-time
employment in Christchurch.
A statistical anomaly, Basil
turns 81 this year and says he has
no plans to retire. He supports
six men with disabilities in a
house in Halswell – and has been
with four of them for 22 years.
Their average age is 65.
So why is this veteran working
40 hours a week?
“For one thing, I like these
guys,” he said.
“We’ve seen a bit of life together.
People need assistance out
there.
“Work keeps you plugged into
life, feeling younger and ‘with
it’ – but I know the truth when
I look in the mirror. I’ve got
my mates, mostly retired now.
Oldies tend to talk about their
aches and pains – and they’re
legitimate concerns.
“But I just think, while I’ve got
my health, there’s more for me
yet. If I slow down, I might start
noticing all the bad stuff about
being old. When it’s time, I think
I’ll know,” he says.
Basil says money’s not the
driver as he’s “all set up.”
For over 40 years, Basil worked
as an independent contractor
in forestry around Canterbury,
as well as on dairy farms and
building sites in the region. He
crossed paths with disability
when he took time out to care for
his wife during a long illness.
“People commented on my
carer skills, and about 2000,
a friend saw jobs in disability
homes and said: “Hey you’d be
good at that,” he said.
This was a period in New
Zealand when policy on disability
was changing. The state
was winding up a historic programme
to segregate babies, children
and adults with intellectual
disability in institutions. People
were being released to join the
community.
Basil landed a job with
NZCare (now NZCommunity
Living) – a Government-funded
in-home support provider.
NZCare was responsible for
resettling residents from the
Templeton Centre between the
mid-1990s and 2000.
Templeton was New Zealand’s
first and largest psychopaedic
institution. Built in 1928, and
originally called the ‘Templeton
Farm Colony’, its purpose was to
‘detain mental defectives.’
Basil says he knew little about
disability at first.
“We’d all heard the spooky
rumours about places like Templeton.
But you didn’t know. You
didn’t see the people,” he said.
“I remember my first day, I
was put on for a nightshift. At
the end of it I thought – well,
this won’t be my cup of tea. But
I turned up the next day and my
manager said: ‘You’ve come back
– you’ll be okay’.”
Basil says the clincher for him
was NZCare’s proviso that staff
obtain formal qualifications.
“I had to do a level 4 certificate,
which was hard for me, but disability
is a skilled support area.
I wouldn’t have known how to
understand and support the people.
I mean, I didn’t know there
were people who didn’t speak,”
he says.
Basil says with time, training
and experience, he learnt there
were other ways to converse,
grasp and relate to people.
“It takes years though to really
‘get’ a different communication,”
he said.
Five of the six residents are
non-verbal, with autism a common
theme.
“We’re always trying to read
and understand what’s going
on for them. We’re all pretty
predictable, and these guys are
no different.
“But we just wish we knew
more sometimes – that they
could tell us – look, I’ve got a
bloody headache, a toothache,
my arthritic knee’s getting bitten
into, I’m craving cheese, oranges,
coffee – or I’m just extra hungry
today and this time it’s serious,
not my usual haggle,” he said.
Basil says he’s a person who is
always observing, thinking and
trying to figure out what makes
others tick.
“One of our guys here sits in
his favourite chair. At face value,
you’d think he’s in his own
world. But I see what he’s up to.
He’s watching us all in the reflection
of the telly, taking in what
everyone’s doing behind him –
who’s talking to who, who’s saying
what. I catch him grinning
and nodding when something
resonates or tickles his fancy.
“It’s easy to overlook some
people, especially when they
MEDIA
don’t use words. But you have no
idea how clued up they might be.
Don’t think you’ve got someone’s
number or know what they’re
grinning about – they know
things you don’t.”
Basil says the residents are
experts at watching and reading
human nature.
“They’ve had hundreds of staff
come and go. They’ve spent a
lifetime scanning the faces of
those ‘in charge’ and sizing up
what they’re in for.
“They also know if you think
they are ‘stupid’ in all kinds
of subtle ways. They hear and
understand everything you say.
They know what you think of
them,” he said.
Basil believes the bad old days
of bigotry have largely gone.
“People are a lot less scary
close up, and once they’ve got
a name and identity, and you
break bread with them,” he said.
Like everyone in Christchurch,
Basil and the men have their stories
on the earthquakes of 2010
and 2011.
“Their house was destroyed.
My manager said: ‘Throw what
you can in a van, drive the guys
up to Picton, I’ve booked a
ferry to Wellington. We found
emergency accommodation in
Hawera,” he says.
The men flew back to
Christchurch six months later
when a house became available.
Asked what makes a good
support worker Basil says:
“Oh training is key. Then you
need a good team of people –
quality, mix, numbers wise. You
need the right attitude – you
have to be there for the guys.
“As staff, we have to stay
vigilant against any attitude
of ‘control’ creeping into the
house. We’re here to support the
people – not to dominant them
or suit ourselves. Our blokes are
fully-fledged adults, sensitive
and aware, with every right to
be here, to feel respected and
valued, safe and relaxed, and to
have good and bad days,” he says.
And does Basil regard the men
as friends? “Yes and no,” he said.
“People matter. You build
relationships in this job. But I
also realise, I can only do my bit.
I’ve got another life – a partner,
friends, kids, grandkids. The
switch does goes off. But I think
you need that boundary.”
A colleague who works closely
with Basil says: “The residents all
love Basil. Maybe it’s his communication
style, tone of voice, mannerisms,
humour or longevity.
But some breathe a sigh of relief
when comes in or gets back from
holidays, a sort of ‘thank God
you’re here.’ Maybe they’ve had
enough of us mostly females.”
With staff turnover notoriously
high in disability work, and
women composing most of its
workforce – this group of residents
in a Halswell house could
be doing a lot worse than having
this enduring man in their lives.
Finally, when asked the obligatory
career question of, so, where
do you see yourself in 10 years?
Basil laughs and says: “Las Vegas.
That was the plan before Covid.
I’d really like to see Las Vegas.”
There is a Royal Commission
of Inquiry in New Zealand
into historic abuse in care
between 1950 and 1999. A public
hearing, which will include
the experiences of people with
disabilities in institutions, will be
held in July. This is a chance to
make disability history seen and
heard.
Pou unveiling and tree planting
to celebrate Takapūneke Reserve
Wednesday June 22 2022 Bay Harbour News
THE CALL is out for locals to
celebrate the public opening of
the first stage of Takapūneke
Reserve in Akaroa. The
event will be marked by the
unveiling of a pou at the site.
Takapūneke was an important
centre for trade between
Ngāi Tahu and European settlers,
but following a massacre
in the 1830s the area became
tapu. It was registered as wāhi
tapu (a place of outstanding
historical and cultural heritage
values) in 2002.
Ōnuku Rūnanga chair Riki
Tainui says this is a key milestone
for Ōnuku whānau.
“Takapūneke is a place of
cultural and historical significance
for our people. The
opening of the first stage of
Takapūneke Reserve and the
blessing of Pou Tū te Raki o
Te Maiharanui is significant
and represents an expression
of our relationship to this
whenua. Current and future
planned works at Takapūneke
help us to realise the aspirations
of many generations of
Ōnuku tīpuna.”
The pou, which was
designed and created by
renowned Ngāi Tahu master
carver Fayne Robinson, will
be revealed on New Zealand’s
first Matariki public holiday
on June 24. A public opening
will be held at the reserve
from midday.
The welcome and speeches
will be followed by a small public
planting. The work is part
of a landscape master plan for
the reserve developed jointly by
Ōnuku Rūnanga and the city
council to acknowledge the cultural
and historical importance
of the site.
City council head ranger
Paul Devlin says the public
event and planting is suitable
for families, with warm
clothing and sturdy footwear
recommended.
“Tree planting is a symbol
of new beginnings making it
a fitting way to mark the pou
being unveiled and Matariki,
which heralds the start of a
new year in the Māori calendar.”
Due to limited parking
people wanting to attend can
park on Beach Rd and walk up
through Britomart monument
to the reserve, or there will
Oscar sets sights high for 40 hour famine
by tramping, biking and rogaining
AN ADVENTUROUS eightyear-old
is so passionate about
helping children in need he’s
walking more than 100km
to raise money for this year’s
World Vision 40 Hour Famine.
Oscar Edmond, of Mt
Pleasant, is walking nearly 100
kilometres and biking more
than 40 kilometres with the
aim of raising $4000 to help
bring clean, safe drinking
water to children living in
some of the world’s toughest
places.
The theme for this year’s
World Vision 40 Hour Famine
is to change everything with
clean water for children who
do not have access to it.
It’s a theme that resonates
with Oscar, who loves the
outdoors and appreciates the
importance of water.
“I really want to help other
kids my age who don’t have as
much as I do. I can get a drink
of water whenever I want, but
some kids on the other side of
the world can’t,” he says.
Oscar is taking on a number
of different challenges to reach
his fundraising goal, including
a tramp, a rogaine event, and
a bike ride.
First, he hiked the 55km
Paparoa Trail on the West
Coast with his family,
completing it in three days.
Then he challenged
himself to a 12-hour rogaine
event, which is similar to
orienteering.
Oscar says he was excited to
take on a such a challenging
event.
“Last year I did two six-hour
rogaine challenges and this
year I decided to double it
and take on my first 12-hour
rogaine challenge. I found it
a little difficult, but overall, it
was pretty good,” he says.
To finish his trio of
challenges, Oscar plans to
complete a 40km mountain
bike ride.
Oscar’s mum, Nora says she
has been more than happy to
support her son’s endeavours.
She and her husband own
a business called Wicked
Rogaines in Christchurch.
“Oscar has been rogaining
his whole life, but we are so
pleased to see him using these
events to not only challenge
and enjoy himself, but to raise
money for clean water for
children overseas,” she says.
Last year Oscar raised more
than $2000 to help fight the
hunger crisis in sub-Saharan
Africa.
• The World Vision 40
Zealand’s largest youth
fundraising event,
thousands of young
Kiwis take on a 40-hour
Banks Peninsula Water Zone Committee
Protecting the Peninsula’s springs
The Banks Peninsula Water Zone Committee is supporting a Le Bons Bay
landowner’s work to protect valuable spring heads and forested streams.
The Committee is supporting the project with $15,000 to complete
fencing on the property, through its recently introduced Canterbury Water
Management Strategy Action Plan Budget. Once finished, the fencing
project will protect 14 hectares of regenerating bush, including spring
heads and hill country streams.
The project, due for completion this month, aims to improve
water quality and the health of the instream habitat, and
regenerate native forest, allowing native species to thrive.
This work highlights the importance of protecting the Peninsula’s
springs - there’s an estimated 8,000 of them, from tiny seeps to
more substantial flows. The multiple layers of lava and ash that form
the volcanic substructure provide pathways for water to flow and
emerge, and with that a diverse ecology of native plants and fish that
respond to the moisture.
The Banks Peninsula Water Zone Committee is a joint committee
made up of community members, rūnanga and local councils.
Treasures from the past:
Port architectural heritage
A LIVELY community
conversation on a Lyttelton
Facebook page has inspired this
week’s focus on the contribution
of the Port Company (previously
known as the Harbour Board) to
Lyttelton’s architectural heritage.
The first Harbour Board
building at 5 Norwich Quay,
on the corner of Oxford St, was
designed by noted Canterbury
architect Frederick Strouts in a
Venetian Gothic style and built
by Lyttelton firm Hollis and
Williams in 1880. In those early
days, the ground floor had a
reading room as a welcome retreat
for sea-weary captains, and
a boardroom on the first floor.
For eight decades the building
was home to the Harbour Board,
who ran Lyttelton Port for over
100 years.
In the mid-1980s, it was converted
from railway storage into
commercial use, and has since
been utilised variously as office
space, a gift shop, a restaurant
and a café.
a collaboration between the
The Last Wild Horses
by Maja Lunde
The sensational new novel from the author of The History of Bees
Translated into 36 languages, winner of the Norwegian Bookseller’s
Prize, and the most successful Norwegian author of her generation,
Maja Lunde returns with a heart-wrenching tale, set in the distant past
and the dystopian future, about extinction and survival, family and
hope. Mikhail lives in Russia in 1881. When a skeleton of a rare wild horse
is brought to him, the zoologist plans an expedition to Mongolia to find the fabled
Przewalski horse, a journey that tests not only his physicality, but his heart. In 1992,
Karin, alongside her troubled son Mathias and several Przewalski horses, travels to
Mongolia to re-introduce the magnificent horses to their native land. The veterinarian
has dedicated her life to saving the breed from extinction, prioritizing the wild horses,
even over her own son. Europe’s future is uncertain in 2064, but Eva is willing to
sacrifice nearly everything to hold onto her family’s farm. Her teenage daughter
implores Eva to leave the farm and Norway, but a pregnant wild mare Eva is tending
is about to foal. Then, a young woman named Louise unexpectedly arrives on the
farm, with mysterious intentions that will either bring them all together, or devastate
them one by one. Spanning continents and centuries, The Last Wild Horses is a
powerful tale of survival and connection-of humans, animals, and the indestructible
bonds that unite us all. Translated from the Norwegian by Diane Oatley.
Lyttelton Harbour Board building opened in 1961, eventually renamed Shadbolt House,
it was demolished in 2012 due to earthquake damage.
rare survivor of its type in Canterbury
– to be enjoyed for many
years to come, currently as the
popular restaurant SUPER.
In 1961, the Harbour Board
commissioned a Hollis and
Leonard designed seven-storey
building, which was highly
contentious due to its scale
and location. Some loved the
modernist high rise with its
theatrical transparent stairwell
and incredible penthouse space;
others loathed either its design,
location, or both. Regardless,
it was an important hub of
book winner for The Improbable Life of Ricky Bird is Gail Halvorsen of Sumner.
maritime affairs for many years.
Known colloquially as ‘the Port
Building’, it underwent a name
change after the Harbour Board
made their next physical move.
The polarising building was
purchased in 1995 by Independent
Fisheries Ltd, one of New
Zealand’s major privately owned
fish processing businesses, and
renamed Shadbolt House, after
their founder Howard Shadbolt.
It became home to the company’s
fleet operation, a New Zealand
Customs office, local community
radio station Volcano Radio
and two serviced apartments.
Deemed uneconomic to repair
after the earthquakes, it was
demolished in October 2012;
having dominated Lyttelton’s
visual landscape for five decades,
its absence certainly altered Lyttelton’s
skyline.
The Harbour Board’s third
home on the corner of Norwich
Quay and Dublin St was designed
by Warren and Mahoney and
aimed to reflect the importance of
the Harbour Board in the port-focussed
town. The three-storey
building with tall, white columns
gave the impression of a grand
English country house, connecting
it to Lyttelton’s colonial
heritage. Its construction in 1987
just preceded the Lyttelton Port
Company’s birth as an entity in
1988, with the introduction of
the Port Companies Act. The
building was also home to The
Banks Peninsula District Council,
prior to amalgamation with
Christchurch City.
This building’s post earthquake
demolition in 2015 led
the way for the development of
Waterfront House on newly repaired,
reclaimed land. Designed
by Athfield Architects and built
by Naylor Love, it opened in
2017 and brought together both
administration and port staff in
one building for the first time.
Located just 4m from the water,
it is a bold, contemporary place,
in stark contrast to Frederick
Strout’s gothic beauty or the big,
blue presence of Shadbolt House.
by 2022. Carbon emissions from
air travel across the organisation
are offset via our own biodiversity
programmes.
According to a Madworld report
in 2019, our gross emissions were
2253 tonnes of carbon dioxide
(CO2) equivalent, compared with
removals of 7883 tonnes of CO2-
equivalent through our efficiency
efforts and from forestry planting
across 2700 hectares.
The changing climate will pose
many risks to life and livelihood
in Canterbury. In recent years
we have seen how occasional,
but extreme, weather events have
had huge effects on residents and
infrastructure around the South
Island.
The driest parts of our region,
along the Marlborough coast and
across much of the Canterbury
Plains, are expected to get even
drier. North-westerly storms are
predicted to become more intense,
with torrential alpine rainstorms
turning our braided rivers into
roaring rapids, fuelling landslides
and causing widespread erosion.
Canterbury’s coastal
communities will be threatened
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
$8 billion of community and
business assets from a possible
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
December 1957, when parts
of Coutts Island in Belfast and
Kainga were swamped by river
flow peaking at 3990 cubic
metres per second (cumecs).
The protection scheme has been
designed to defend Christchurch
from a flood of as much as 6500
cumecs.
Environment Canterbury’s
leadership of biodiversity and
biosecurity programmes is also
underpinned by climate-change
concerns.
Canterbury’s distinct braided
rivers and unique wetlands face
many challenges. The rivers form
a vital ecological link and provide
Be a Stormwater Superhero. Keep baddies out of the drain.
ENVIRONMENT CANTERBURY
Wednesday June 22 2022 Bay Harbour News 17
Be a Stormwater Superhero
You wouldn’t pour soapy suds, paint or
petrol in the river, right?
What about tipping in some trash,
metal, dust, or dog poo?
Thought not, but when it rains or we
wash stuff outside, the things we leave
behind end up in our rivers, streams, and
bays.
These baddies travel, untreated, through
the stormwater system, making the
water unsafe and wreaking havoc on the
habitats of living things.
It’s not hard to be a Stormwater
Superhero. Here are some simple things
you can do to keep the bad guys away.
THE CAR
Tonnes of copper and zinc find their
way into Canterbury waterways every
year.
Much of it comes from brake pad dust
and tyre grime that’s washed into the
stormwater system.
Get on the Grass Wash your car on
the lawn or grass verge. It stops cleaning
chemicals from going into the stormwater
system. Not possible? Why not use a car
cleaning service.
Choose Copper Free Ask for copperfree
brake pads when it’s time to have
them replaced and keep on top of any oil
leaks.
THE HOME
Rainy days might give our roofs,
driveways and paths a good shower,
but all that grit and grime has to go
somewheresomewhere – often straight to
our waterways.
Sprucing up the Section When
gardening, take care to keep soil and
fertiliser on the lawn. Also, sweep up
leaves and garden waste, and pick up
rubbish by the stormwater grate.
Doing DIY Wash paintbrushes in the
laundry sink. Sweep up any sawdust and
leftover bits and pieces and keep the
gutters clean. Well-painted roofs, gutters,
and downpipes reduce the amount of zinc
going into the stormwater.
Bag it and Bin it When out and
about, pick up your dog’s ‘business’.
Also, don’t feed the ducks, swans or
geese – too many of their ‘leavings’
leave a mess in our waterways.
Lift that Litter If you see
rubbish on the footpath, pick it up.
Otherwise, it could make its way to
the stormwater drain.
AT WORK
Lots of activity at the worksite can mean
lots of things polluting our waterways.
Even small amounts of industrial products
can do serious damage to the health and
habitats of marine life.
Clean up Chemicals Clean up
spills straight away. Likewise for small
hardware items. Think about methods for
prevention, such as installing bunds or
filters.
Safe Space for Substances Being smart
with how and where industrial items are
stored prevents accidents from happening
in the first place and lessens the impact if
they do.
Get Busy with the Broom Keep the
shop floor, yards and pathways clean of
grit, grime and small items that could
otherwise end up in our rivers when it
rains.
Southern Response
homeowners urged to
apply for compensation
$130m in compensation remains unclaimed
Homeowners who cash-settled their claims with AMI
or Southern Response before 1 October 2014 were
underpaid by about 20 per cent. The average
compensation now being paid is approximately
$100,000 per claim. Over 1,300 homeowners have not
yet claimed their compensation.
Christchurch lawyer Peter Woods, senior partner at
Anthony Harper says these homeowners did not get their
full entitlement when they cash-settled their claims.
“They may have been very seriously prejudiced at the
time and they are entitled to be compensated for that
wrong,” Peter Woods says.
“There is over $130m worth of compensation waiting
to be claimed.
If a claimant cash-settled their earthquake damage
with Southern Response before 1 October 2014, they
are likely to have been underpaid and would be
entitled to a further 20 per cent payment from
Southern Response, plus interest.
“Some homeowners may be reluctant to revisit their
experience with Southern Response, or wary of the
compensation offer. We understand this can seem
difficult, however our dedicated team are successfully
guiding clients through the application process. No
direct contact with Southern Response is required,
and there is no fee if the homeowner is not eligible for
compensation,” he says.
Woods represented Karl and Ali Dodds in the
landmark case where both the High Court and Court
of Appeal determined Southern Response had
engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct by
withholding information when cash-settling their
earthquake insurance claim. As a result, Southern
Response accepted it was liable to pay approximately
3,000 homeowners a total of $300m compensation.
Anthony Harper represents more than 400 Southern
Response homeowners, with compensation paid to
date ranging from $65,000 to $425,000, at a total
value of $30.5m.
“So many of our clients have told us about the
hardship and struggles caused by the earthquakes
and how this compensation will change their lives,”
Woods says.
Anthony Harper will advise on the right to claim
outside the compensation package, what they are
owed under the compensation package, Southern
Response’s requirement to sign a new Settlement
Agreement, and on the terms of the Agreement.
"We appreciate that homeowners need to have
certainty about legal fees. After Southern Response's
contribution to fees, our fee is $875,” Woods says.
Anthony Harper has established a dedicated website
for homeowners to register for compensation at:
