On Friday 3rd June members of the Village and Community Councils
gathered to celebrate the planting of a flagpole cherry tree kindly
donated by Gryffe Valley Rotary Club. Longtime village resident Dr
Morag McCallum completed the planting with the final trowel full of
soil. Those present then adjourned to the Village Hall where tea and
royal themed home baking was on offer.
The village Summer Social made a welcome return on Sunday 5th
June after an absence of three years. An excellent turnout enjoyed
jugs of Pimm’s and other liquid refreshments in the summer sunshine
along with strawberries and cream. We were particularly pleased to
be able to welcome our new neighbours from Weirs Wynd to the first
major village event since the lifting of Covid restrictions.

The proposed Stewart Milne development of new
homes along the western edge of Barochan Road,
Houston is now out for public consultation by the
developer. The housing application is at the pre-application stage.
Once a formal planning application is lodged, formal representations
of your views can be submitted to the council planning department.
In general terms, I’m aware of concerns about the impact on local
infrastructure and services of housing developments and also about
the relative lack of smaller properties and affordable housing in
Houston, Crosslee, Brookfield and Linwood. I will read the developer
consultation plans for this proposed development with keen interest.
You can make your views known by visiting barochanroadplanning.
co.uk. The website will be available to view between 6th June and
1st July. A live consultation day will also take place on 16th June,
between 2pm and 7pm, via the ‘live chat’ section of this website with
members of the project team available to answer questions.
On the first anniversary of the tragic death of 13-year-old William
McNally, his family paid tribute to him in a touching video that aims
to make all young people aware of the dangers of swimming in
open waters. The video can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/
watch?v=GpfahOzR7X0. William passed away on 5th June last year
after getting into trouble in the water at the Clay Pits in Linwood,
part of the River Gryffe, while swimming with friends. Renfrewshire
Council responded to the tragedy by placing seven new GPS signs at
potentially dangerous areas along the River Gryffe as part of a drive to
improve the safety of all waterways in Renfrewshire. The GPS signage
also includes a life buoy, a throw-line rope and a reminder that people
shouldn’t swim in the river. A new water safety policy has also been
adopted by the council which will continue to review and tackle water
safety issues. In memory of William and all those who have lost their
lives in our waterways.
