Improv<strong>in</strong>g Performance of<br />

Rout<strong>in</strong>e Immunization Programs<br />

Supportive Supervision <strong>in</strong> Afghanistan<br />

GHD|EMPHNET cont<strong>in</strong>ued support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Public <strong>Health</strong> <strong>in</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g rout<strong>in</strong>e immunization<br />

supportive supervision and monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> priority prov<strong>in</strong>ces. A team of tra<strong>in</strong>ed supervisors from <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) visited around 1440 health facilities <strong>in</strong> Faryab, Prawan, Kapisa,<br />

Nimroze and Panjsheer, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Khost, Paktya, Maidan Wardak, Balkh, Sar-e Pul, Logar,<br />

Badakhshan, and Parwan. The visit<strong>in</strong>g teams had already been tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> supportive supervision <strong>in</strong> addition to<br />

EPMIS and data management.<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>cial-level tra<strong>in</strong>ers from <strong>the</strong> EPI tra<strong>in</strong>ed over 1800 focal po<strong>in</strong>ts and vacc<strong>in</strong>ators <strong>in</strong> 65 districts<br />

Immunization <strong>in</strong> Practice <strong>in</strong> Iraq<br />

1440 supportive supervision visits were conducted by <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>cial EPI team<br />

To streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> performance of rout<strong>in</strong>e immunization <strong>in</strong> high-risk<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ces, GHD|EMPHNET worked with <strong>the</strong> Iraqi MOH <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> EPI<br />

workforce to improve <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge, skills, and practices <strong>in</strong> immunization<br />

and VPDs. A cascade tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g approach was applied target<strong>in</strong>g high-risk<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ces with hard-to-reach communities <strong>in</strong> Baghdad Al-kerkh, Babel,<br />

Diwaneya, Diyala, Karbala, Kirkuk, Misan, Muthana, Thi Qar, and Wasit.<br />
