Iraq<br />

Iraq is ano<strong>the</strong>r country <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region that is us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> experience<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Polio Eradication Program to accelerate measles and<br />

rubella elim<strong>in</strong>ation and streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> rout<strong>in</strong>e immunization <strong>in</strong><br />

high-risk prov<strong>in</strong>ces, namely Anbar, N<strong>in</strong>ewa as well as Baghdad’s<br />

Al-Karkh and Rasafa. Over 100 surveillance officers at EPI focal<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts as well as over 400 community volunteers at PHC focal<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts, both at prov<strong>in</strong>cial and district levels, were tra<strong>in</strong>ed by a<br />

team from <strong>the</strong> central and prov<strong>in</strong>cial EPI.<br />

To identify immunity gaps <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se prov<strong>in</strong>ces, GHD|EMPHNET<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued its support to <strong>the</strong> MOH to conduct limited scale<br />

coverage surveys around reported fever and rash cases, i.e.,<br />

suspected measles cases. Thirty surveys were conducted, each<br />

collected immunization data for 20-30 children under five years<br />

of age. The ma<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs showed that around 30% of surveyed<br />

children were ei<strong>the</strong>r unvacc<strong>in</strong>ated or did not complete <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

vacc<strong>in</strong>ation schedule.<br />

Regional Initiatives<br />

To <strong>in</strong>itiate <strong>the</strong> development of action plans that facilitate implementation of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration between immunization<br />

programs and o<strong>the</strong>r public health programs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, GHD|EMPHNET, toge<strong>the</strong>r with GPEI partners, ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />

EPI managers, polio/VPDs surveillance officers, and Primary <strong>Health</strong>care directors from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq,<br />

Jordan, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen <strong>in</strong> a workshop. Each country presented its experience with <strong>in</strong>tegration,<br />

focus<strong>in</strong>g on successes, challenges, and lessons learned. In addition, each country drafted an action plan for<br />

specific activities to facilitate <strong>in</strong>tegration, focus<strong>in</strong>g on activities that are achievable with exist<strong>in</strong>g resources.<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> development of concrete plans for position<strong>in</strong>g immunization <strong>in</strong> UHC <strong>in</strong> selected EMR countries,<br />

GHD|EMPHNET, <strong>in</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ation with <strong>the</strong> WHO and UNICEF, a regional meet<strong>in</strong>g for EPI managers and PHC<br />

directors from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Sudan, and Yemen was also conducted. In <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g, each<br />

country drafted specific priority activities to support accelerat<strong>in</strong>g immunization position<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir national<br />

UHC policies and strategies. This meet<strong>in</strong>g follows up on reviews conducted on immunization position<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

UHC-related policies and strategies <strong>in</strong> Afghanistan, Iraq, and Sudan.<br />

The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g focused on <strong>the</strong> importance of immunization, immunization<br />

schedule, detection, report<strong>in</strong>g of AFP & suspected measles cases, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> ways to improve community engagement to <strong>in</strong>crease immunization<br />

coverage and streng<strong>the</strong>n surveillance<br />
