The school has found that most
students come to school
hungry and they have had to
(despite the limited funds) start
a feeding programme and
also offer accommodation for
some of the students at the
school simply because life at
home for some of these children
is extremely dysfunctional and
challenging.
Isaac is physically unable to
keep up with the demands
on the school and has
had to turn many children
away. The classrooms are
falling apart, are extremely
overcrowded and there are not
enough desks in any of the
classrooms. The teachers
are regularly not paid on
time and this sometimes means
that there are not enough
teachers to cover the subjects
required for the students to be
well prepared to perform to the
best of their capabilities. There
is no functional library which
means outdated worn out
books often have to be shared
between 6 to 10 student. The
laboratory does not have the
basic equipment needed for the
students to participate in their
practicals which is a part of the
national curriculum.
Isaac cannot do this alone.
He needs our help to keep the
school open and to increase
his capacity to deliver quality
education to all the students
that walk through the doors of
Shammah Splendid Centre-
Kibera.
The Vision of the School is
to provide holistic education to
the underprivileged in Kibera
and its surrounding areas.
The Mission of the School
is to give an opportunity
for learning to each child
in the Kibera as a form of
intervention in raising up
responsible citizens who
will become contributors to
the local economyas well as
develop to be job creators.
The Universal Declaration of
Human Rights makes clear
that every child has the right
to free basic education so
that poverty and lack of money
should not be a barrier to
schooling. If we do not step
in, many families will remain
locked in a cycle of poverty that
will go on for generations. Many
parents are feeling that they
are being left with no choice
but to marry off their young
daughters or send their sons to
take part in hard manual labour
in the fear of the risk of making
themselves destitute in their
efforts to get their children better
lives through education.
