Hybrid SUV with a point of difference
IF YOU THINK the cost of fuel is
taxing the household budget now,
I read recently that motor industry
commentators were expecting
prices to fluctuate for months to
come.
That’s where electric vehicles
and hybrids come in, cutting
down the use of petrol is on the
minds of almost everyone and
there is no better time to buy a
hybrid. What’s more there is no
better time to make that purchase
the new generation Mitsubishi
Outlander PHEV; from $60,990 all
three models in the PHEV range
qualify for a $5750 New Zealand
Government Clean Car Rebate.
This evaluation focuses on the
range-topping VRX that is listed at
$73,990 and was carrying a couple
of high-grade extras – light grey
cross-stitched leather trim and
diamond flake paint that together
adds around an extra $1500.
By the time you add in on-road
costs, the Outlander PHEV in this
form is sitting towards the luxury
car bracket and it’s fair to say that
it is very much a luxury model,
it has an extremely high level of
fitment and the cabin area is plush
and comforting – a lot to do with
the prestige of that light leather.
I particularly like it and I like the
feel from inside, it is Mitsubishi’s
flagship SUV and it’s worthy of the
near $80k price tag.
What is also very tempting
is Mitsubishi’s fuel use claim of
1.6-litres per 100km. Sure, that’s
at best possible usage, but like all
hybrids the Outlander is frugal, it
is so thrifty that it is hard to fathom
that we are talking about a big SUV

There are dials and buttons that can
quickly alter the driveline settings
so that cross-country travel can
be tailored to suit the impending
conditions.
As its nomenclature suggests,
the Outlander PHEV is a plugin
hybrid. No surprises there,
Mitsubishi launched the PHEV
here in 2014 and since then it has
become the plug-in benchmark.
It stole the lead, and eight years
later it is still turning heads with
its technology and quality. It is all
new for 2022, there is a fresh, curvy
shape and its interior has been
redesigned to provide optimum
user-friendly status.
As plug-ins have become more
popular, so has my ability to
relax with them. Charging is easy
and, what’s more, Mitsubishi has
provided a home charging cable
of decent length – 5m to be exact.
I don’t have a designated wallbox
or charging system at my home,
so it’s a matter of using the long
cable and plugging into a standard
three-pin socket located on the
wall of my garage. It’s a fair distance
to the car which is why the long
cable is so important to me; and,
of course, a type 2 to type 2 cable
is also included for when you have
the need to connect to a designated
public-use charge port.
The distance you can travel on
electric only mode is claimed by
Mitsubishi to be up to 84km, that
sits well with the readout during
my time with the test car although
on a cold morning that distance
is slightly reduced, but with the

warmth of the day it lengthens.
There’s no fear of range anxiety
either, if battery capacity is
depleted the petrol engine kicks in
and normal transmission resumes,
fossil fuel drive is motivated. On a
full tank a readout indicates around
500km can be travelled before the
petrol tank needs replenishing.
The Outlander’s hybrid driveline
is far from simple, it’s a twin motor
system, one up front and one at the
rear, there’s also a 2.4-litre fourcylinder
engine that drives through
an eight-step continuously variable
transmission.
Mitsubishi claims a power output
of 98kW with 195Nm of torque,
while these figures may seem a
little modest you have to take into
account there is a wealth of power
and torque through electrical
supply pumping the figures up by
85kW/100kW and 255Nm/195Nm
front to rear respectively. You can
sure feel the surge of the latter under
acceleration, the combined force
from the engine and motor is quite
vivid, especially in power mode.

the one I liked the most was the
designated one-pedal EV mode, it
ushers in acceleration willingly, but
also provides solid braking impetus

dealerships, Christchurch

one of nine dealerships
to be awarded for 2022,
and the only South
Island dealership to win
an award.
The dealership ended
the financial year with
an average of four new
vehicle sales a day. In
addition, the Barrs built
and opened a second
dealership in Rangiora in
2021.

disengaged, it’s quite a reassuring
feeling.
I took the Outlander PHEV on
much of my normal route inland
towards Darfield, the weather was
grim with heavy rain and wind,
but I felt entirely comfortable with
its manners on the road, there is
healthy feedback at the steering
wheel, and even with a lot of water
under the big 20in tyres there was
a strong feeling of accuracy when
corners were presented.
There’s also a strong feeling of
connection between driver and the
road, a lot of that has to do with
the complexity of the suspension,
while the spring and damper rates

I alluded to earlier, there is enough
compliance in the system so that
bumps are ruts are dealt to, but
stability isn’t compromised, the
body structure is held level.
I had the evaluation car in my
care for a week and I very early
grew to enjoy its rather special
characteristics, not only is it more
than just one vehicle, all that it
can achieve it does so very well.
Sure, the two rear seats are a bit
confining for those large of stature,
but it’s no different to any other
seven-seater of this size, rear
load space is still very generous
at 472-litres with the third row of
seats flat – spanning to 1373-litres
with the second row down.
If the Outlander PHEV is out
of reach financially, bear in mind
that much the same driveline is
available in the Eclipse Cross,
Mitsubishi’s mid-size SUV, and
from $52,990 it is a lot more
affordable. It also qualifies for a
$5750 rebate.
I know two people who own an
Outlander hybrid and both are
thrilled with their purchase. That’s
no surprise, the Outlander has long
been one of my favourite SUVs,
and the hybrid version is just the
icing on the cake.
