I ACT
non-referentional architecture
1 / diploma
student project
1 2
As part of our studio, the task was to invent an
non-referential building within a week's time - without
restrictions of scale, function or original context.
And our task was to affirm our values and buildings in
such a building-event.
Non-referential architecture is not an architecture
that subsists as a referential vessel or as a symbol
of something outside itself. Non-referential buildings
are entities that are themselves meaningful and
sense-making and, as such, no less the embodiment
of society than buildings were in the past when they
were the bearers of common social ideals.
The smell of pine. Light from the windows breaks
through the branches and fog, you can hear children's
voices. The house is wooden. It's made simply
but definitely with a lot of love and warmth. Initially
there was an interior space with an entrance to the
light, a pitched roof and main stairs leading from the
two-light space to the living rooms along sides. Inside
you can smell the wood or, sitting down by the
window, autumn rain. There is something native in a
simple wooden house.
The project is located next to the Krasnopresnenskaya
metro station, on the site of which the "Solovey" cinema
was demolished. First, I explored the theme of the
image of a house with a pitched roof, as some kind
of anonymous object that contains a public function.
In my project, it became the main building located in
the center of the square. It is a public building of an
anonymous form with a pitched roof, which is in dialogue
with the arena and large halls. The proportions
of the house create a unique public space through
the steep and high slope of the roof.
+ 12.800
+ 10.000
+ 12.800
Functionally, it is a museum, a theater with a hall for
800 people, a garden and a library with coworking
space. Here people make exhibitions, perform, rest,
study and work. The exhibition space is one unified,
giving an opportunity for expositions of different
scales. It can open doors to the theater foyer, where
the amphitheater is located, to expand the space
for different scenarios. The garden has two floors.
Trees grow through holes of various shapes in the
ceiling. The garden overlooks the library, where is a
central two-light space with a ramp, and on the sides
in transparent glass rooms, where is a co-working
space, reading rooms.
The regular pitch of the metal truss structures the
building. The house itself is metal, made of different
sizes and shapes of corrugated board panels, which
reflects the urban environment. Some panels are
raised to create windows. Some of them open onto
the square, inviting city residents to their place.
student project
When I designed the hybrid, I chose a scenario in
which this building is placed in a virtual forest, for
which I created a special type of residential building in
which small sculptural cells are stacked vertically and
connected by transitions between towers with stairs
and elevators.
With such a stretch upwards, towers give a completely
new urban space, in which there is a lot of light, while
I give a priority to the public function. I explored the
theme of a deconstructed typical plan, where the cell
area becomes minimal and there is a lot of air around.
Each cell type is unique. Their sculptural form was
created for different scenarios of life. The walls form
a functional space. Somewhere the bed is raised,
somewhere the table grows out of the wall. In a cell,
the interior affects the exterior and vice versa. Thus,
a difference in shape is created, and when they are
added vertically, complex unique towers arise.
The towers are being printed using future 3D printing
technology, in which concrete is poured in layers. Now
examples are known in low-rise construction, and I
assumed that this would also appear in high-rise
construction. There is a bridge to each cell from the
tower with an elevator and stair.
Below, you find yourself among thin towers that go far up on the square. This allows us to take a different
look at how residential buildings and urban space can coexist. In my case, they stand in a public square and
shape its space, creating a completely different impression. A shiny metal house can be seen through the thin
trunks.
2 / the game — school constructor
student project
16
17
By responding to the context of site, removing barriers,
and promoting sustainability, art, and activity, a
successful school project creates a welcoming, comfortable
and flexible environment with the power to
strengthen communities, and inspire its designers,
staff, and students.
The game is a constructor of a typical school. It consists
of 7 elements. Each has a specific function required
for the school. The elements are versatile and
easily connect to each other with the articulation of
the public space, the proportions of which are taken
so that it floats from one to the other. Each element
is unique and includes different spaces to create an
interesting learning environment. When connecting
the elements, a complex perimeter of the outer shell
is obtained, thereby changing the environment of origin
and the external environment. Various courtyards
are formed, green gardens that fill the void between
the forms.
The school grounds offer opportunities for teaching,
learning, recreation and community activities for both
students/staff and the surrounding community. You
can assemble a minimum package, as well as a complete
version of the school, depending on the needs
and context of the school.
The valley of Moscow State University is covered with
an openwork pattern of pedestrian bridges that connect
all the buildings, creating a second level of public
space, noisier and more open than the ground one.
The ground is intended for residents and workers of
the district itself.
This is a group project of an innovative research
and educational complex based on the campus of
the Moscow State University. The main goal of the
project is the development and implementation of
technologies demanded by business, as well as the
retention and attraction of highly qualified specialists.
The science and technology valley will be an open
area integrated into the urban environment. Significant
areas in the new project are allocated for laboratories
and research centers. On the campus, it is planned to
build facilities that will house interdisciplinary research,
innovation and educational clusters. Also in the valley
there will be an open communication platform with a
museum space, a transformable multifunctional hall,
conference rooms, facilities for sports and recreation.
In addition to scientific centers, a school for gifted
children will be opened in the valley.
4 / house in MSU valley
student project
22
23
The next step was to develop one of the district's
houses. In my project, the main task was to explore
how the public space on the roof can be combined
with housing. This is an inverted scheme of the usual
urban planning solution, when the public floor is at
the bottom, in my case it is at the top.
The building consists of 3 blocks. Each of them
differs in design and functional content of the public
floor, while maintaining a single language. The ribbon
runs through each of the 3 houses, but affects them
differently.
In block A, ribbon leads to the entrance to a
conditional stage with an amphitheater, where various
exhibitions and lectures can be held, workshops are
also opened there. Along the perimeter of the house
itself, balconies for residents appear, as if they are a
continuation of the bridges themselves. In block B, it
cuts through the house itself, creating a public space
within the house itself. In this way, bridges become
part of the architecture itself. In block C, the ribbon
cuts through the volume of the upper floor, which is
open to all urban residents, forming a library and coworking
space.
28
The New Contemporary Art Museum in New York is
a precious building with clear concept and strong
impact. I was inspired by representation of other
museums and the context itself managed to create
my own image.
The main objective of my project was to create a
unique space for contemporary art and create a
dialogue with neighboring museums and the city
itself. It was this task that led me to create a building
with a certain clear structure with a transformable
space. The building is rectangular in plan and thus
as if supporting the uneven SANAA museum. It
is the backbone and boundary of the ensemble
of three museums. Wooden material creates
a neutral, but at the same time not quite a
typical environment for art and at the same time
maintains a dialogue with its neighbors, having
a certain monotony in the material.
All three museums react slightly differently to
city. It was important for me that my museum can
be transformed itself in dialogue with the city. Thus,
large wooden shutters was designed, which allow you
to change both the internal space of the museum and
its external appearance in the form of a reaction to
the city itself. The museum resembles a magic box
that can be opened and closed as needed.
33
The task of the studio was to design landscape, on
which the settlement was to appear.
Rocks in the middle of the ocean became a home for
people. They sawed out windows and streets - a city
appeared. At the cliff, the houses stand as a strong
wall, protecting the inhabitants from strong winds.
Inside the rock, tunnels were formed for climbing up,
as well as stairs along its perimeter. Isolation in the
middle of the ocean creates its own magical world.
Here people are forced to confront dangerous natural
conditions, architecture becomes a refuge from
various cataclysms.
buildings.
We came up with a new urban environment that
includes a multi-level structure that interacts neatly
with existing homes with a team of 7 people. We did
not build new houses, which was the task of the
studio, but only created a new urban fabric, open to all
residents. The strong relief on the site made it possible
to look differently at 3 zones of the elongated street.
A city relief arose, which gradually settles down and
becomes an integral part of the city.
This project is in the same location as the previous
one, but in this instance each of the 19 students designed
their own low rise house. In this case, a dense
and diverse urban development was obtained. It creates
a single street that includes various urban plots.
This building arises from the image of a closet that
stores the whole world of man. The facade becomes
part of the interior. This storage structure allows you
not to clutter up the central space with storage and
at the same time let in a lot of light.
The settlement is located on a site that is partially
isolated by the river, so it turned out to create its
own world, which is radically different from the nearby
villages, but at the same time clearly refers to the
nature around.
The site is shaped like an island. Therefore, I had
the idea of generating a natural pattern, which
subsequently subordinated the structure of the
settlement. So there was a main road, along which
the houses themselves are located.
The task of the studio was to come up with a project
in a week according to the description written by another
student. Each of us pulled out a piece of paper
and received a description of the city to be designed.
houses
All houses in the city are high thin vertical towers of
the same height, however each task has a unique
sculptural finish at the top. Proportions of houses
width to height - 1 to 20.
landscape
All houses are arranged randomly in a large rectangle
of proportions 1 to 5. The landscape is rectangle is as
diverse as possible.
streets
All streets are thin transitions between houses and
are pedestrian only.
transport
Since the city is a vertical metro, it is also vertical
and is located in the same towers as housing. All
private transport is flying, as well as transport city
services.
