ON THE COVER
Teens from Long Beach schools came together this summer to offer their
tech support skills to seniors. During the 2 hour clinic, seniors dropped in to
ask questions about setting up their systems, sending emails, using social
media, and more. Thanks to a generous grant from the Josephine S. Gumbiner
Foundation, teens were paid for their work. The two-hour clinics were sponsored
by The Heart of Ida, a Long Beach non-profit organization that supports local
seniors in need with programs and services that sustain independence and
connection. In the photo/or pictured here – Wilson High School student Emma
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Dina M. Berg
Founder & Executive Director
So far 2022 has been busy for Heart of Ida. We updated our mission and
vision thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors and staff, and we moved
into a larger office space in the Long Beach Senior Center. You can now find
us on the 1st Floor, Room 104. The Senior Center is getting busier every day.
It’s exciting to see people getting reconnected to classes, activities and each
other. We have added Drop-In Tech Support hours based on community
needs and continue to focus on our Stay Connected programming (see the
back for more details). We invite you to join our Stay Connected community
by signing up for our free message service where you will get updates on
resources, news, events, and other things of interest.
MEET OUR STAFF
Micky Salatino is the
Program Director for
Heart of Ida. One of the
programs she loves to direct
is Ida’s Walkers, our volunteer
dog walking program. She is
currently completing studies
in Holistic Pet Wellness to be able to further
assist our clients with their pets’ needs.
Dr. Gretchen Swanson
is an Advisor to Heart
of Ida and assists with
programming, dividing
her time between HoI’s
Simply Connected (Digital
Confidence) efforts and
community safety. You’ll see her on local video
programs especially orienting the older adult
community to safety strategies when walking our
streets. She says that, “The best part of working
with Heart of Ida is meeting older adults across
LB who are making a positive difference.”
Dori Morper helps with
various Heart of Ida
programs. She has been
working to help older adults
maintain their health and
independence for over two
decades and on two coasts.
She has run enrichment, educational and social
service programs at senior centers, provided
care coordination/case management to older
adults and their caregivers, and has educated the
community on various topics related to aging.
What is New Orientations?
It’s when we show a senior (50 years or older)
how to use the Fitness Room. That includes
learning the rules and how to use the equipment.
This usually takes about 30 minutes depending
on their knowledge.
Someone told me you walk 8 to 10 miles a day!
Is that true?
Yes, I try to walk 8 to 10 miles every day!
Anything else?
Well, I have a love/hate relationship with 1,000
better. We walk everywhere. To the movies,
downtown, shopping, you name it. During the
pandemic everything was closed down. Now
that things are opening back up, It’s nice to
get to know people again. Walking is great for
meeting people. It also keeps you younger and
up to speed on what’s going on in the world.
Being connected is important and walking allows
you to converse with others, especially in
the walking group. We share information.
What would you say to someone that wants to
start walking/getting active, but may be a bit
hesitant?
Just do it! Come in to the Long Beach Senior
Center. The people are nice and helpful. You
can sign up for exercise classes, work out in
the gym, or join us for the walking group.
Suanne Swan and Robert Cohen
Hi! Thanks for meeting with us today. What are
your names and ages?
My name is Suanne Swan and this is Robert
Cohen. We are both in our 70s.
How did you two meet?
We met at the Long Beach Senior Center!
Suanne, someone told me you did marathons?
Yes, in my 60s. I did lots of walking. I still do.
Lots of the walks I did were connected to the
American Heart Association.
So, you are part of Donna’s walking group?
Yes, both of us.
Why do you walk?
Suanne Swan and Robert Cohen
To feel better! Walking helps you stay focused
as you age. I hear stories about how bad
people feel. Walking really does make you feel
Any other advice?
Stay hydrated!
Thank you Suanne and Robert!
Lon Hill, 62 Retired
Hi Lon! Thanks for meeting with us today. Are
you from Long Beach?
Yes, all of my life. Went to Lincoln Elementary,
Franklin and then Poly High.
How did you start walking with Donna’s
walking group?
Well, I was a bit of a couch potato and knew I
needed to get moving so I joined a “meet up”
to start walking. I wanted a group for accountability.
We walked in Signal Hill and that’s
where I met Donna. We walked every Saturday
but I needed more. Donna told me about
the Long Beach Senior Center and the classes
there. So I joined and Donna’s walking group.
10 | AgeWell Long Beach | Fall / Winter 2022
Donna and started taking classes. When Donna
started the walking group I joined.
How often does the group meet/walk?
Twice a week
Do you walk outside of the walking group?
Yes, I walk everywhere. The store, the post
office, to and from catching the bus.
How do you AgeWell?
Lon Hill
To age well you need to interact with others.
That’s important. Take classes. Meet new
people. Get out of the house!
How can someone get involved in the walking
group, gym or other classes?
Get a tour! See what you like and then try it
out. You won’t regret it.
That is great. Why do you walk?
It helps with stress, sleep, and so many things.
It’s important to keep moving.
If someone wanted to start moving and perhaps
join the gym or one of the many classes at the
LBSC what would you tell them?
I would say give it a try. Go at your own pace.
Just do your best.
Thank you Lon!
Willa Cobb, 73
Hi Willa. Thanks for meeting with me.
You’re welcome.
Are you from Long Beach?
No, I am originally from Tennessee but I’ve been
in Long Beach for 20+ years. I retired from California
State University Long Beach in 2012.
How did you get involved in Donna’s
walking group?
I wanted to stay active after I retired. I met
Any advice about aging well?
Stay healthy and age gracefully
Thank you Willa!
12 Benefits of Walking from
the Arthritis Foundation
What’s not to like about walking? It’s free. It’s
easy to do, and it’s easy on the joints. And
there’s no question that walking is good for
you. A University of Tennessee study found
that women who walked had less body fat than
those who didn’t walk. It also lowers the risk
of blood clots, since the calf acts as a venous
pump, contracting and pumping blood from
the feet and legs back to the heart, reducing
the load on the heart. In addition to being an
easy aerobic exercise, walking is good for you in
many other ways.
THE BENEFITS OF WALKING
1. Improve Circulation
Walking wards off heart disease, brings up the
heart rate, lowers blood pressure and strengthens
the heart. Post-menopausal women who
walk just one to two miles a day can lower
their blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24
weeks. Women who walk 30 minutes a day can
reduce their risk of stroke by 20%, and by 40%
when they stepped up the pace, according to
researchers at the Harvard School of Public
Health in Boston.
2. Shore Up Your Bones
Walking can stop the loss of bone mass for
those with osteoporosis, according to Michael
A. Schwartz, MD, of Plancher Orthopedics &
Sports Medicine in New York. In fact, one study
of post-menopausal women found that 30 minutes
of walking each day reduced their risk of
hip fractures by 40%.
3. Enjoy a Longer Life
Research finds that people who exercise regularly
in their fifties and sixties are 35% less
likely to die over the next eight years than their
non-walking counterparts. That number shoots
up to 45% less likely for those who have underlying
health conditions.
4. Lighten Your Mood
Walking releases natural pain¬killing endorphins
to the body – one of the emotional benefits
of exercise. A California State University,
Long Beach, study showed that the more steps
people took during the day, the better their
moods were.
5. Lose Weight
A brisk 30-minute walk burns 200 calories.
Over time, calories burned can lead to pounds
dropped.
6. Strengthen Muscles
Walking tones your leg and abdominal muscles
– and even arm muscles if you pump them
as you walk. This increases your range of motion,
shifting the pressure and weight from your
joints to your muscles.
7. Improve Sleep
Studies found that women, ages 50 to 75, who
took one-hour morning walks, were more likely
to relieve insomnia than women who didn’t
walk.
12 | AgeWell Long Beach | Fall / Winter 2022
8. Support Your Joints
The majority of joint cartilage has no direct
blood supply. It gets its nutrition from joint fluid
that circulates as we move. Movement and
compression from walking “squishes” the cartilage,
bringing oxygen and nutrients into the
area.
9. Improve Your Breath
When walking, your breathing rate increases,
causing oxygen to travel faster through bloodstream,
helping to eliminate waste products
and improve your energy level and the ability
to heal.
10. Slow Down Mental Decline
A study of 6,000 women, ages 65 and older,
performed by researchers at the University of
California, San Francisco, found that age-related
memory decline was lower in those who
walked more. The women walking 2.5 miles per
day had a 17% decline in memory, as opposed
to a 25% decline in women who walked less
than a half-mile per week.
11. Lower Alzheimer’s Risk
A study from the University of Virginia Health
System in Charlottesville found that men between
the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more
than a quarter of a mile per day had half the
incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
than those who walked less.
12. Do More for Longer
Aerobic walking and resistance exercise programs
may reduce the incidence of disability
in the activities of daily living for people who
are older than 65 and have symptomatic OA, a
study published in the Journal of Clinical Outcomes
Management found.
Tai Chi with
Jimmy
Hi Jimmy! Thanks for agreeing to talk to
AgeWell Magazine! Let’s get started.
Where are you from?
I’m from Southern California and I’ve been living in
Long Beach for the past ten years.
I see you are teaching a Tai Chi class at the Long
Beach Senior Center at 1150 E. 4th Street.
How did you get started with Tai Chi?
I saw Tai Chi in the park and wanted to get
involved. I reached out to a Long Beach local, Dr.
Gretchen Swanson. She has been teaching Tai Chi
for awhile. I joined a training with her a few years
ago and that’s how I got started.
Why is Tai Chi important?
Tai Chi is important for many reasons, but for
me personally it gives me better balance and
relaxation of the mind, body and soul. It’s great
for older adults in so many ways such as general
overall health, balance, fall prevention, longevity
and vitality.
What is the best thing about teaching Tai Chi?
The best thing about teaching my classes, is that
I get to give people methods to help themselves
feel better. I also enjoy sharing what I know with
others. Giving back to the world is a beautiful gift.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I meditate, read, feed the
homeless, ride my bike, and play my guitar.
Jimmy
18 | AgeWell Long Beach | Fall / Winter 2022
Would you like to share anything else?
Thanks to Donna, Elyse and Eileen at the
Long Beach Senior Center for giving me this
opportunity! I plan to work with and do more
for the Senior community, which I think is under
and misrepresented. My Caregiving service and
Non-profit (Project Nonstop), will indubitably help
Seniors in Long Beach and across the world.
Wait. What? You have a nonprofit called
Project Nonstop?
Yes! Our mission is to help end World Hunger and give
aid to senior’s across the United States. We handle
anywhere from 200-500 lbs. of food per week, and
donate it to Senior Centers, among others.
Wow! That is impressive. Thank you for your
service.
How can people sign up for your class?
Everyone is welcome! The class is on Tuesday
and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Come to
the Long Beach Senior Center a 1150 E. 4th
Street and get started!
Thanks Jimmy!
Talk Tech with
Seniors!
THE DANGERS OF THE
SUGARY DRINK TREND
By: Kelsey Ogletree
From the June 2022 AARP Bulletin
From designer sodas and fresh-pressed juices
to bubble teas and chocolaty frappés, we have
more options to suck through a straw than
ever before. Creative nonalcoholic drinks are
all the rage, often matching the latest cocktails
in their complexity. Consider the Spring Fling,
offered at Utah-based Swig, one of the new
“old-fashioned” soda shops popping up of late.
It’s made with Dr Pepper, vanilla, strawberry
puree and coconut cream.
But this isn’t a healthy trend. Guzzling sugary
beverages of any kind puts you at greater risk
for weight gain, insulin resistance and type 2
diabetes. “Drinking calories is not natural. It
was never part of a human being’s evolution,”
says Zhaoping Li, M.D., director of the UCLA
Center for Human Nutrition. In fact, sipping
sugary drinks may be more harmful to your
health than chowing down on a candy bar.
Here’s why.
THEY TURN INTO FAT—FAST
A typical healthy person has about 5 grams of
glucose, a form of sugar, circulating in his or
her blood. A 20-ounce bottle of cola contains
65 grams of sugar—five times as much as a
typical glazed doughnut. When you drink a
sugary beverage, it enters your bloodstream
and raises your glucose levels very quickly —
far faster than if you took in the same number
of calories from a solid food. When your body
suddenly has more blood sugar than it can use
for energy, it converts this excess glucose into
body fat.
Worse, even though sugary beverages are
loaded with calories, your brain doesn’t recognize
drinks as food. “Calories in liquid form do
not really produce satiety,” Li says. So even as
it floods you with sugar, a soda won’t trigger
the hormones that tell you to stop eating.
22 | AgeWell Long Beach | Fall / Winter 2022
THEY COME DRESSED AS ‘HEALTHY’
The belief that certain drinks are “healthy”
can cause people to forget about their sugar
content, says Tim Spector, M.D., professor of
genetic epidemiology at King’s College London.
“A great example of this is store-bought
orange juice,” he adds. “It’s an ultra-processed
food and has as much sugar as [soda]. And,
for some people, it can cause the same sugar
spikes.” Same goes for sweetened coffees,
fruit smoothies or sports drinks, which can
contain 34 grams of sugar in a 20-ouncebottle.
The American Heart Association recommends
adults consume no more than 6 teaspoons
(25 grams) of added sugar per day for
women (9 teaspoons, or 36 grams, for men).
And that includes all the sugars snuck into the
breads, sauces and prepared foods you eat.
THEY MAY SHORTEN YOUR LIFE SPAN
If the threat of diabetes and obesity weren’t
scary enough, long-term consumption of
sweet beverages may also increase your risk
of dying from heart disease and certain cancers.
Harvard researchers found sipping drinks
sweetened with sugar to be associated with a
moderately higher risk of breast cancer or colon
cancer. They also discovered that for every
additional sugary drink a person consumed,
on average, per day, the risk of dying from
heart disease increased by 10 percent.
5 WAYS TO CUT BACK
A sugary beverage now and then is OK as a
treat. But on a regular basis, “the sugar rush
is far too rapid for our bodies to handle,” says
Tim Spector, M.D. Some ways to cut down:

Swap sparkling water for sugary soda.
Calorie-free seltzers come in an array of
flavors.
Brew your own iced tea. Chill a pot of tea,
then add just a touch of sweetener if you
want.
Flavor up your H2O. Sliced fruit or caloriefree
powders or drops add zing to plain
water.
Snack on fruit. Replace juices with whole
fruits, especially citrus fruits and berries.
Don’t drink away stress. If you need an
energy rush, consider physical or mental
exercise.
