Na Fir-chlis seeks emerging Highland musicians - p10
SNJO 'Rivers' on tour - p4 :: NYOS open 2023 applications - p14
Bob Last new Chair of Leith Theatre as
it enters an exciting development period
Leith Theatre Trust has
said it is delighted to
announce that Bob Last
has been appointed as
Chair of its Board.
Bob Last is a widely known and highly respected creative
leader and commercial consultant particularly in the fields of
music and film. In a career spanning over 40 years, his
expertise is recognised across the creative industries in
Scotland and the UK, spanning public policy, education,
intellectual property and cultural service.
His early entrepreneurial spirit in the music industry saw
success as producer, designer and manager; celebrated
recently as part of the award-winning documentary ‘Big Gold
Dream’ (2015) and also featured in the ‘Rip It Up’ exhibition
(2018, National Museum of Scotland). He has founded
various creative businesses and brings a provocative,
innovative and passionate spirit to the creative sector.
His influence as a member of the Scottish Government
Creative Industries Framework Agreement Implementation
Group oversaw the laying of the early foundations of Creative
Scotland; his involvement informing public policy at an
educational and government level.
His wide-ranging experience includes Chair of Cultural
Enterprise Office (2002-2013); Chair of Edinburgh
International Film Festival and Edinburgh’s Filmhouse (2012-
2015); Co-Chair of Scottish Government Industry Advisory
Group alongside Fiona Hyslop (2016-2020); and member of
the short-lived Board overseeing the creation of Screen
Scotland.
Bob is co-owner of Leith’s FirstStage Studios, the largest film
studio in Scotland, with business partner Jason Connery. He
has been at the forefront of championing Scotland’s
burgeoning TV and film industry and is an Oscar nominated
and BAFTA award winning film and TV producer with credits
including ‘The Illusionist’ (Sylvain Chomet, 2010), featured in
Indiewire as a top 100 film of the decade; and ‘She
Will’ (Charlotte Colbert, 2021), due for imminent UK release
and starring Alice Krige, Malcolm McDowell, Kota Eberhardt
and Rupert Everett. It won the Golden Leopard for best first
feature at last year’s Locarno Film Festival.
An early foray into architecture and structural engineering
saw several years of study before being drawn into the
creative industries and Bob brings his breadth of building
knowledge as well as his extensive cultural and substantial
business start-up and capital project experience to Leith
Theatre.
Leith Theatre has had a long journey from its early ‘save the
building’ campaign and initial community activist Board
involvement. During Covid, Leith Theatre saw
transformational change and a huge focus on the
development of the board and strategic future planning.
A complete raft of building health surveys, a refreshed
Feasibility Study, a capital fundraising strategy and new
business plan mean the theatre is investment-ready with
exciting plans for its future role in the local community and in
the cultural ecology of Edinburgh and Scotland.
Bob’s appointment as Chair represents a pivotal moment in
the vision for the building and early start-up business, and
Leith Theatre is ready for the momentum and opportunity
that this new Chair appointment heralds.
Lynn Morrison, Chief Executive of Leith Theatre said: “I
am absolutely thrilled with the appointment of Bob Last as
Chair of Leith Theatre. Bob brings with him a wealth of
experience and knowledge that is undeniably current to the
venue’s journey. He is a powerful ally with incredible
commitment to the creative industries both across this city
and the wider landscape. With the positive focus that Bob’s
support will steer, I feel incredibly optimistic about our
future.
Bob Last, incoming Chair Leith Theatre Trust said: “I’m
excited to take on the role of Chair of Leith Theatre at a
pivotal time. The Trust’s work has positioned the space ready
for a vibrant future across performance of all kinds, building
on the site’s legacy and the affection of past audiences to
fulfill its potential within Edinburgh and the Leith
community’s cultural landscape. First and foremost,
however, this is a wonderful building in need of a newly
negotiated lease, capital fundraising, and continuing
refurbishment as the vision blossoms. I am looking forward
to working with the committed team at Leith Theatre to
ensure the complexities of this project can be managed
innovatively to deliver an iconic event space.”
Digital Archive Protecting Legacy
Of Piping In Scotland Goes Live
The Archives can be accessed @ www.archives.thepipingcentre.co.uk
Scotland’s national centre
for excellence in bagpiping
has launched a new, free to
access digital resource and
research hub. The Archives
from The National Piping
Centre will protect the
heritage and legacy of
piping in Scotland and make
valuable pieces of piping
history available for
students, scholars and
enthusiasts around the
world.
The Archives from The National Piping Centre holds digitised
copies of five influential piping periodicals dating back to
1948 - Piping Times, Piping Today, The International Piper,
Piper and Dancer and Notes from the Piping Centre - as well
as photograph galleries of piping through the years.
It also incorporates The Centre’s Noting the Tradition oral
history archive, which holds recorded interviews with people
involved in piping at all levels and all over Scotland over the
past 50 years.
Available to access at www.archives.thepipingcentre.co.uk
The Archives from The National Piping Centre keeps the
legacy of these publications, information, conversations,
images and other materials alive and makes them more
easily accessible than ever before.
The British Library and website developers Mucky Puddle
provided digital expertise to complete the project and it was
all made possible by a hugely successful crowdfunding
campaign launched last year.
An incredible £33,500 was donated by piping fans from right
around the globe, allowing the Centre to complete the
mammoth task of digitising the titles and launching the new
platform within a year.
The National Piping Centre now plans to continue adding to
the resource and is encouraging piping fans with historic
materials related to piping to share them so they can be
utilised for research purposes and preserved for future
generations.
The National Piping Centre’s Director of Piping, Finlay
MacDonald, said: “With this new online resource, the
legacy of the piping in Scotland which is recorded in vital
publications, interviews and photographs, can live on. The
contents of this remarkable archive will continue to educate
and inform pipers, fans and researchers the world over.
“What is so exciting about this project is that it has the
potential to grow and accommodate various sources of
information provided not just by us, but by the global piping
community. We would encourage researchers or enthusiasts
who think they have something to add to The Archives from
The National Piping Centre to please get in touch.
“The creation of this resource was a big task, but it was also
extremely important. We are so grateful to all those who
helped us reach our crowdfunder target, and those who, like
us, recognise the importance of championing the history and
heritage of piping.”
Head of Piping Studies at The National Piping Centre,
John Mulhearn, said: “The history recorded in The National
Piping Centre’s magazine and oral history archives is of
great value to the international piping community. Students
and scholars of the bagpipe deserve, and will greatly benefit
from, the access granted to them through The Archives from
The National Piping Centre project. In making this resource
accessible, and allowing piping enthusiasts globally to
contribute, we hope to open up new conversations and
opportunities for learning.”
The periodicals – and the important information and data
they hold – have been completely digitised and are held by
the British Library and searchable on the new online
platform.
Piping Times and Piping Today together record over 70 years
of piping history and were recognised internationally as the
most significant source of piping information, opinion and
news. Both were forced to cease publication in 2020,
however, due to the unprecedented financial challenges
caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
SNJO takes “Rivers” on the road to
Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow
The Scottish National
Jazz Orchestra opens
its latest season by
taking the vital, soulstirring
music from its
latest, internationally
acclaimed album,
Where Rivers Meet
on tour from Thursday
29 September to
Saturday 1 October.
Recorded in a single session at St Giles’
Cathedral in Edinburgh, Where Rivers Meet
celebrates the music of four saxophonists whose
work reflected turbulent times in America during
the 1960s, including the Civil Rights struggle,
and whose legacies continue to grow seven
decades on.
“Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton
and Dewey Redman were regarded as mavericks
when they emerged on the scene yet many of
their own compositions and pieces with which
they were associated drew on the blues and
gospel music and have passed into the standard
jazz repertoire,” says saxophonist and SNJO
artistic director, Tommy Smith. “Ornette
Coleman’s Lonely Woman, for example, is played
by jazz students and jazz musicians the world
over.”
Where Rivers Meet consists of four specially
arranged suites, each dedicated to one of the
four saxophone heroes, and has drawn praise
from across Europe, the US, Canada and
Australia. In reviewing the album, the UK’s
Tommy Smith - www.facebook.com/TommySmithSaxophonist
:: photo by Derek Clark
leading jazz magazine, Jazzwise was moved to
describe the SNJO as “a benchmark of excellence
in British jazz” and online magazine Jazzviews
asserted that Where Rivers Meet is “an
absolutely magnificent recording.”
The forthcoming concerts will feature Tommy
Smith himself as soloist in the Albert Ayler suite.
Fellow saxophonists Konrad Wiszniewski, Martin
Kershaw and Adam Jackson pay homage to
Dewey Redman, Anthony Braxton and Ornette
Coleman respectively.
“These are new arrangements, written by longtime
associates of the orchestra, Geoffrey
Keezer, Paul Harrison and Paul Towndrow, and
myself,” says Smith. “There are intricate
elements as we negotiate orchestrations of what
were essentially smaller band compositions but
it’s not a step into the unknown. Familiar themes
including the ballad The Very Thought of You,
the spiritual Goin’ Home, which informed
Dvorak’s New World Symphony, and even When
the Saints Go Marching In all feature. We have a
ball playing “the Saints” and hope the audiences
will enjoy it as much as we do.”
SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE .........
Member Release :: Alastair White / RUNE
shop @ www.divineartrecords.com/recording/rune-fashion-opera/
"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"
Announcing the album
release of Scottish
Music Centre member
Alastair White’s fourth
Fashion-Opera, RUNE.
Released on Friday 9 September, the album is a live recording of RUNE’s world
premiere at the Hackney Round Chapel earlier this year — now with
remastered sound — which critics called “perfect” (Vogue Italia), “blockbuster…
explosive” (Opera Magazine), and “unquestionably my highlight…a melding of
physical and metaphysical, of quantum mechanics and spatial
manifestation” (Mark Berry, Boulezian, Seen and Heard International).
RUNE is a vast cosmological fantasy created in collaboration with the London
fashion house Ka Wa Key, featuring an ensemble of three grand pianos
conducted by Ben Smith. Smith performs alongside other star pianists Joseph
Havlat and Siwan Rhys, as well as the “especially impressive” (The Guardian)
Patricia Auchterlonie and the “fierce, fearless and cerebral” (The Guardian)
Simone Ibbett-Brown. It is recorded and produced by Chris Tanton, and comes
with a booklet including both the libretto laid out in its original typographical
design — as well as images of the capsule collection created especially for the
opera.
On a planet where history is forbidden, a young girl dares to tell her story. A
voyage across galaxies and millennia, hers is a tale of the archipelagos of
Khye-rell and their matterwork, through transdimensional canals and sealanes
to the RUNE of the universe’s origin. This song, her story — through the very
act of being told — will have consequences beyond imagining…
Fashion-Opera is a new discipline proposed by White in a cycle of four works —
WEAR, ROBE, WOAD and RUNE — as the methodological realisation of his
theory of ‘contingency dialectics.’ It has been hailed as “a whole exciting new
genre of art” (BBC Radio 3) and “a groundbreaking new genre” (Classical
Music).
Devised with the fashion curator Gemma A Williams, as well as music directors
Ben Smith and Kelly Poukens, and showcasing designers such as Derek Lawlor,
Michael Stewart, Renli Su and Tommy Zhong, the operas premiered as part of
Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival and are now being released by Métier as studio
albums. RUNE finishes the cycle in a grand fashion-opera spectacle that at its
premiere featured the debut of an original capsule collection from Ka Wa Key,
as well as contemporary dancers Ryan Appiah-Sarpong, Max Gershon, Shakeel
Kimotho and Thomas Page performing with interactive sculpture by Sid the
Salmon.
White explains, “the opera is based on the hypothesis that, in the moments
following the big bang, the universe passed through a subatomic state and that
here the arbitrary fluctuations of quantum data imprinted upon it: like a rune.
As the universe expanded, this printed, frozen fluctuation became the
inconsistencies in the emptiness of cold space, which in turn became matter,
galaxies, life, thought, language.”
RUNE is supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland, the Hope Scott Trust, the
Marchus Trust, the Royal Musical Association, the RVW Trust, the Sarah Caple
Scholarship and Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival.
Scotland on Tour returns
to Glasgow’s West End
with An Evening of Songs
Scotland on Tour,
the exciting initiative
to support the
recovery of our live
music industry, will
return to Glasgow’s
West End this autumn
when An Evening of
Songs and Stories
with James Grant
comes to Cottiers
Theatre on Sunday 25
September.
Regarded as one of the country’s finest
singer-songwriters, James first shot to fame
with the band Love and Money, writing four
classic albums for the band. Recording all
four in New York, James worked with worldrenowned
producers such as Gary Katz of
Steely Dan and Tom Dowd (who produced
Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton and Aretha
Franklin). The band produced several hit
singles, racked up silver disc sales and
created a devoted world-wide fanbase.
James has gone on to have a hugely
successful solo career with seven critically
acclaimed albums - one of which was BBC
Radio 2’s Album of the Week.
Internationally recognised as one of the
great songwriters of recent decades, James
draws from a broad palette of pop, folk, soul,
country and blues influences. He twins darkly
literate, melodically lush songcraft with rich
vocals and virtuoso guitar work for every
performance - leavening it all out with a
wickedly acerbic humour.
James Grant said: “Cottiers is a beautiful
venue just round the corner from where I
live, I’m very much looking forward to this
show in September.”
Scotland on Tour is taking place over a
period of 12 months between April 2022 and
2023. The remaining concert taking place at
Cottiers Theatre is Dallahan + support on
Sunday 23 October.
Kevin Morris, from The Fallen Angels
Club who are promoting the show, said:
"We are delighted through the Scotland On
Tour programme to be given the opportunity
James Grant
www.facebook.com/jamthrawn
to work with someone of James Grant's
stature."
Scotland on Tour supports the creation of
hundreds of concerts and performances at
much-loved arts centres, town halls and
community venues across Scotland. More
than 120 artists are set to perform at more
than 100 venues across the country as part
of the initiative.
The project, which has been created and
managed by Active Events, was made
possible by £750,000 of Scottish Government
backing and will focus on increasing the
number of opportunities to showcase and
enjoy live music, while bringing exciting acts
to the doorstep of city, towns, villages and
rural communities.
The year-long Scotland on Tour bill includes
both emerging and established artists with
genre-spanning acts appearing across the
breadth and width of the country, with rock,
pop, jazz, classical, folk, trad and acoustic
genres all being showcased.
Na Fir-chlis - New battle of the bands-style event
seeks out emerging talent launched in Highlands
Members of the public are invited to choose
their favourite acts in a new music contest
that will showcase emerging musical talent
in the Highlands.
Na Fir-chlis, or Northern Lights, is a battle of the bands-style event
organised by SEALL, the performing arts promotion charity based on the
Isle of Skye.
The contest is open to non-professional emerging musicians of any
musical genre, bands and solo artists who live in the Highlands and who
are looking for a chance to be fast-tracked into the limelight by playing at
some of Scotland’s best music festivals in 2023.
Entrants are asked to submit their best track, in audio or video format, by
30 September. The public vote, which will be held by online poll, opens on
7 October and closes on 21 October.
The best five shortlisted will be announced on 22 October and the live
battle will take place before a judging panel at a public event in Seumas’
Bar, Sligachan Hotel, on Friday, 4 November at 7.30pm.
The winner will be announced on the evening and will be awarded the
prize of playing before the crowds at musical festivals around Scotland in
2023.
There is no entry fee and SEALL will give each shortlisted act £250
towards the costs of travel and accommodation to the 4 November event.
Sara Bain, SEALL’s interim director, said: “We are really excited to be
putting on Na Fir-chlis and seeing what’s out there. We know there’s a lot
of excellent musical talent in the Highlands and this is a chance for us to
find it and show it off to the world.
“We have a number of festivals already on board, including
Knockengorroch in Dumfries and Galloway and our own Skye Live. We will
add to the list over the coming weeks.
“This is an exceptional and rare opportunity for non-professional acts and
solo artists to progress into the big festival line-ups and we are hoping
the public will come out and lend their support to their favourites by
voting for them and coming along to Seumas’ Bar on 4 November to
cheer them on.
“We will open the public vote on 7 October, so please keep track of us on
social media @sealleventsskye to access the poll.”
Scottish Ensemble reveals a
season which demands attention
Scottish Ensemble is
delighted to announce
its 2022/2023 season
which explores
attention as our most
valuable resource.
In a world which constantly and determinedly solicits
our attention, often by numerous sources at once, the
season explores the power of live music to cut
through the noise.
The feel-good factor is also at the centre of this
exciting new season which explores atmospheres and
music that combine reflection, intimacy and joy to
maximise the glorious power of live performance.
The programme opens this week with In Sync (10-11
September 2022), a brand-new dramatised show for
young people aged 11-14 in collaboration with
MishMash Productions.
This new production, which alongside music includes
movement and storytelling, celebrates how these
twelve musicians fuse together to become a dynamic
ensemble, inviting audiences to meet the individual
personalities of each musician.
The diverse programme features everything from
classical to world music, varying from Jessie
Montgomery’s vibrant, rhythmic Strum to
Shostakovich’s distinctive Chamber Symphony. Other
highlights include Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, Caroline
Shaw’s The Orangery from Plan & Elevation and Jonny
Breathe
Greenwood’s Proven Land. In Sync also tours
extensively to schools in Aberdeen, Dundee and
Glasgow.
Breathe (25-28 October 2022) encourages the
audience to take a moment to reflect, listen, and
explore the effects of music on mind and body.
Curated by violinist Andrew Berridge, Breathe is a
journey of self-discovery that brings performers and
audience together to discover how they feel during a
live concert. The focused, intimate and mindful
listening experience features music by Nico Muhly,
Beethoven and Donald Grant.
Concerts by Candlelight (1-8 December 2022)
includes a series of cozy evening concerts set in some
of Scotland’s most beautiful and atmospheric venues
illuminated by warm, flickering candlelight. From J. S.
Bach, to Caroline Shaw, and Peteris Vasks, these
concerts are bound to relax and comfort with their
rich restorative music.
Goldberg Variations – ternary patterns for insomnia
(3-8 March 2023) returns after surprising audiences
around the world. A collaboration with Sweden’s
Andersson Dance, Goldberg Variations combines
music and movement to bring a fresh visual
dimension to this revered piece of music by J. S.
Bach.
A night of deep listening and aural exploration with
one of Scotland’s most distinct musical voices,
Nature’s Songwriter (15-16 May 2023) is Scottish
Ensemble’s first collaboration with Erland Cooper,
curated by Artistic Director Jonathan Morton.
Throughout Cooper’s career his music has been
described as both calm and euphoric, often inspired
by themes of nature, landscape, place and time.
This first collaboration between Scottish Ensemble and
the composer, centres around the world-premiere
performance of a brand-new piece he has developed
in a series of workshops together. This new work will
be framed by a set from Erland’s back catalogue, for
which he will be joined by a small group of Scottish
Ensemble musicians, and a set from Scottish
Ensemble itself – featuring an exploration of music
that inhabits similar soundworlds to Erland’s own,
including minimalism and more, curated by Jonathan
Morton.
The season closes with Concerts for a Summer’s Night
(19-23 June 2023), a musical celebration of the
summer solstice that invites audiences to relax and
enjoy the long Scottish summer evenings with a cold
drink and a unique array of music from the well-loved
to the less expected. The debut performances of this
last year sold out in many venues, the perfect
counterpart to Concerts by Candlelight.
Scottish Ensemble continues its long collaboration
with the charity Maggie’s, which supports people
dealing with cancer. Together they have developed
sessions that use music as well as meditation and
mindfulness to explore different ways for people to
manage pain and feel ‘in the moment’. In 2022/23
Scottish Ensemble plans to work in all 8 Maggie’s
centres across Scotland.
NYOS classical applications and
auditions for 2023 are now open
Apply by Thursday 29 September @ www.nyos.co.uk/classical-applicants/
The National Youth Orchestra
of Scotland is back! 2023
will be a year of exploration as
changes are announced to its
classical pathway: the NYOS
Development Orchestra will
replace Junior and Senior Orchestras,
the upper age limit
for Symphony Orchestra applications
is reduced to 22 years
old, and courses are slightly
longer than in recent years.
“After this year’s fantastic return to live music-making, our
ambition is to ensure that NYOS remains relevant, responsive,
accessible and inclusive. We will continue to provide the
best orchestral education and performance opportunities for
young musicians living and studying in Scotland, as well as
those with Scottish connections based further afield. In response
to feedback from the NYOS community, our 2023
courses will be slightly longer than in recent years as we
seek to offer the very best musical opportunities and create
a relaxed, focused, and fun learning environment.” Kirsteen
Davidson Kelly, NYOS Chief Executive.
The inspirational musical experiences begin in spring 2023 as
NYOS welcomes multi-award-winning Scottish guitar virtuoso
Sean Shibe, a celebrated and versatile soloist who is building
a reputation as one of the world’s leading guitarists supported
by a critically acclaimed discography. Sean performs
with NYOS Symphony Orchestra in April concerts presented
as part of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s 2022-23
season. The orchestra will also perform Mahler’s Symphony
No. 7, a boundary pushing early 20th-century masterpiece,
which juxtaposes lush German romanticism in the spirit of
Richard Strauss and Wagner with experimental tonality and
an unconventional orchestra including a tenor horn, cowbells,
and mandolin.
Conductors Catherine Larsen-Maguire and Martyn Brabbins
bring a wealth of experience of working with professional orchestras
and ensembles as well as an established history of
conducting NYOS ensembles. They will offer orchestra members
a truly special opportunity to improve their ensemble
playing and musicianship.
“I am so much looking forward to experiencing the energy
and enthusiasm of the NYOS young musicians again. Mahler
7 is one of my absolute favourite pieces and working on it
and performing it with this orchestra will be so exciting. The
combination of NYOS, Mahler and our charismatic soloist
should ensure that the concerts will be unforgettable!” Catherine
Larsen-Maguire, Symphony Orchestra Conductor,
Spring 2023
It is with excitement that NYOS welcomes back Natalia Luis-
Bassa, a dynamic conductor and passionate advocate for
young musicians, to conduct the NYOS Development Orchestra.
Natalia has performed an exceptional job of guiding
NYOS Junior Orchestra through challenging repertoire over
the past three years, and players will have a unique opportunity
to perform orchestral repertoire and hone their musical
(and many extra-musical) skills in a welcoming and fun environment
supported by expert instrumental tutors. This year’s
repertoire includes the enduringly popular 'Finlandia' by Sibelius,
a turbulent and rousing tribute to the composer’s
homeland, and Errollyn Wallen’s moving and evocative exploration
of slavery and freedom, 'Mighty River', which combines
spirituals and contemporary classical techniques to
powerful effect.
The Development Orchestra will prepare many young musicians
for a successful future audition for NYOS Symphony
Orchestra but will most importantly provide an excellent opportunity
to enjoy playing exciting repertoire with peers from
across Scotland.
“Our programme in 2023 will be an opportunity to explore a
wide range of music that will expand our young musicians’
technique and appreciation of music. It will be also a great
way to explore the dynamics of being a member of an orchestra
and learn how everyone’s part is important to the
whole ensemble. I can’t wait to perform great music together
because after all, we are here to have a fun musical
experience.” Natalia Luis-Bassa, Development Orchestra
Conductor 2023
You are eligible to apply to NYOS if you are Scottish, live in
Scotland or have Scottish connections: Born in Scotland /
Living in Scotland / Studying in Scotland / With Scottish family.
Finance should never be a barrier to joining the NYOS community
and the organisation encourages students to apply
for a bursary if they are eligible. Auditions are free and
course bursaries of up to 100% are available.
Royal National Mòd 2022 to bring dazzling
display of Gaelic music and culture to Perth
The Royal National Mòd
will showcase and celebrate
the very best in Gaelic music
and culture when it comes
to Perth for the first time in
18 years this October.
A vibrant programme of fringe concerts, shows, ceilidhs and
exhibitions, has today been unveiled and will delight
audiences across the city between the 14-22 October 2022.
The eight-day event is Gaeldom’s premier musical and
cultural celebration staged annually at a different Scottish
town. This year’s Royal National Mòd in Perth will mark 130
years since the first ever event took place in Oban in 1892.
Around 1000 musicians and participants will fill over 10
venues, the length and breadth of Perth this October,
including Perth Concert Hall, Perth Theatre and North Inch
Community Campus. Sporting events will also take centre
stage, with shinty and football hosted at Bells Sports Centre,
while a joyous massed choirs event on Perth High Street will
close the nine-day celebration.
With the recently reported rise in the number of Scots
knowing some Gaelic words and phrases, this year’s Royal
National Mòd is expected to attract thousands of competitors
and concert goers who have an interest in the language and
its culture. This significant number of attendees will make a
hugely positive impact on the local economy of Perth.
Cuirm-Fosglaidh a' Mhòid 2022 (Mòd 2022 Opening Concert)
will welcome some of the very best Gaelic talent to the Perth
Concert Hall stage this October. Singers Mairi MacInnes,
Arthur Cormack, Ceitlin Lilidh and Darren MacLean will
perform alongside an all-star band led by Gary Innes and
Ewen Henderson of Mànran fame.
The Saturday evening will showcase a very special night
dedicated to the thriving Gaelic culture and traditional music
that Perthshire has to offer. Entitled Ar Cànan 'S Ar Ceòl (Our
Language Our Music), this special night will feature a host of
notable names including Margaret Bennett, Ross Ainslie and
Ali Hutton’s Symbiosis, alongside Patsy Reid. This concert will
not only celebrate the well-known musicians and singers who
have put Perth on the musical map, but also the many
community and educational groups who work tirelessly with
passion and enthusiasm to ensure the local traditional
cultural community continues to thrive. These groups include
Perth Gaelic Choir, The Gordon Duncan Experience and The
Tayside Young Fiddlers.
A new competition for Perth Mòd 2022 is the Cogadh nan
Còmhlain (Battle of the Bands), with the under 13s final
taking place on Monday 17th and the under 19s final on
Tuesday 18th October. This junior competition will provide a
wonderful opportunity for young people to perform live on
stage, with the winning bands receiving a recording session
experience with Wee Studio in Stornoway.
The Leonard Brown Scottish Dance Band will play a
legendary ceilidh in the Salutation Hotel Ballroom on the
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights of this year’s event.
Cuirm Crìochnachaidh a’ Mhòid (The Mòd Grand Finale) will
welcome West Coast favourites Trail West to the Perth
Concert Hall to close Gaeldom’s 2022 premier musical and
cultural event.
Duais Ealain na Gàidhealtachd (The Highland Art Prize) will
also take place in Perth’s City Contemporary Art Gallery. It
will exhibit recently selected artwork by local art associations
and galleries that celebrate art and culture from across the
Highland and Islands. In conjunction with the Royal National
Mòd, the winning artwork will be chosen and presented with
a prize of £1000 ( shared between the artist and their
corresponding gallery), alongside an opportunity to exhibit
their work at a high-profile Glasgow gallery in 2023.
The vibrant fringe programme will accompany a full suite of
in-person competitions, some online competitions and a
selection of exciting new categories. Competitors wishing to
take part have until 10pm on Friday 15th July to submit their
entries.
Competition categories include singing, bàrdachd,
instrumental, drama and Highland dancing, while new
elements include an accompanied choirs’ competition aimed
at harmony singing groups of between five and ten singers
alongside a new solo singing contest, The CalMac
Competition, which is open to adult learners.
Outwith the syllabus, a new TikTok competition and Sruth,
an event aimed at encouraging more natural conversation
among young people, will be part of the programme this
year.
James Graham, Chief Executive Officer of An Comunn
Gàidhealach, said: “Returning to Perth for this year’s Royal
National Mòd will be a fantastic moment for us. It will be so
special to hear and see the best that Gaelic culture has to
offer during this year’s event and to welcome people from
Perth, the rest of Scotland and indeed the world, to the city
to enjoy Gaelic music and culture across Perth’s unique and
special venues.”
Shona MacLennan, Ceannard, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, said:
“We are delighted to see the Royal National Mòd returning to
Perth. The Mòd is always a huge celebration of Gaelic
language and culture, providing opportunities to use the
language in a wide range of events. It also contributes to a
sense of wellbeing, particularly through bringing old and new
friends together after some very challenging years. We
welcome all celebrations of Gaelic and its culture and I’m
sure Perth will be an outstanding location again this year.”
The Royal National Mòd is supported by Bòrd na Gàidhlig,
Langtoun Jazz and Kirkcaldy Music Society
Concert :: Seonaid Aitken Ensemble on Saturday 10 September
Langtoun Jazz and Kirkcaldy Music Society
showcase Seonaid Aitken’s composing talents:
Glenrothes’ Seonaid Aitken is no stranger to jazz audiences through her Stephane
Grapelli-inspired violin playing and stylish vocals with her band Rose Room,
featured in last Autumn’s Langtoun Jazz programme, or her BBC Scotland radio
show.
Now Langtoun Jazz, in association with Kirkcaldy Music Society, brings her
wonderful cross-genre “Chasing Sakura” suite to the
stage at Kirkcaldy Old Kirk.
The suite, commissioned by the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues
Festival in 2021, reflects Seonaid’s time living in Japan
and is inspired by the Japanese Sakura or spring cherry
blossom festivals across the country. It is also inspired
by the restorative powers of nature, a deeply personal response by Seonaid to
recovering from a serious accident during lockdown and finding healing through
long walks in the outdoors.
The suite is arranged for a 6-piece all-female ensemble of five string players and
the saxophone and flute of Perth-born former Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra star
Helena Kay. The second half of the programme will comprise arrangements for the
ensemble of tunes associated with the great Ella Fitzgerald, allowing Seonaid’s
vocal talents to take centre stage,
Grace Black of Langtoun Jazz said: “It is so exciting to welcome back Seonaid
and to showcase this wonderful music so close to her birthplace. The working
relationship with Kirkcaldy Music Society is also a new venture for us and reflects
the fact that ideas of putting music in stylistic boxes are redundant, This is just
great music for all tastes.”
Kirkcaldy Music Society Chair Mairi Rolland added: “Kirkcaldy Music Society
warmly welcomes this collaboration with Langtoun Jazz and very much hopes that
the relationship will continue and that appreciation of all kinds of good music will
grow.”
The concert at Kirkcaldy Old Kirk begins on this occasion at 7.30pm. on Saturday
10 September. (Doors open 7pm). Tickets costing £14 can be purchased in
advance from www.brownpapertickets.com/event/5504479. Tickets can also be
reserved via info@langtounjazz.co.uk or
kmstreasurer@gmail.com or purchased at the door.
All door sales are cash only. Audiences are welcome to bring their own
refreshments.
Undertow Overflow :: Amy Duncan + Ben Harrison
Scottish tour :: dates @ www.undertowoverflow.com/tour-dates
Undertow Overflow is
a brand new
collaboration between
multi-instrumentalist
and songwriter Amy
Duncan and writer/
director Ben Harrison.
Amy Duncan
:: photo by Somhairle MacDonald
It combines their love of simple narratives with a
strong emotional undertow. The title of the show
comes from a joining of the title of Amy’s album
Undercurrents with Ben’s short story collection
Overflow.
This special performance will be an openhearted
exploration of the strangeness of human love
and loss, filled with vivid and poetic imagery.
The intended audience will come from lovers of
music as well as literature, and the curious from
Ben’s theatre community. Amy has released 8
albums so far and Ben’s work as a performer of
his own stories is a relatively recent
development in his practice. After a year of
reading at the monthly From The Horse’s Mouth
events at Summerhall in Edinburgh, Ben was
asked to headline the event.
Amy and Ben will entwine their practices to
create an evening of emotionally charged,
surprising and uplifting performance.
They are inspired by such artists as Amanda
Palmer and Neil Gaiman who toured the world
with a suite of songs and stories woven
together.
Amy Duncan and Ben Harrison comment on
the show: “We believe that there is a synergy
between our work, and that the performance will
be a refreshing blend for audiences who may
have been to gigs, or to spoken word evenings,
but rarely a mixture of both. We are so excited
to be working together at last having known
each other for so long since the days of Swelling
Meg in the mid-Nineties. We aim to offer an
evening exploring love and loss and the strange
beauty of human relationship, with laughter and
tears along the way.”
For Ben this is a real departure into the world of
being onstage after over thirty years as a
successful theatre director. His last professional
engagement as a performer was nearly twentyfive
years ago. For Undertow Overflow Ben has
recruited leading and multi-award winning
director Jemima Levick to direct his
performance. Ben and
Jemima are established
colleagues and friends
since she was assistant
director on the multiaward
winning Grid Iron/
National Theatre of
Scotland show Roam in 2006.
email news to :: musicnewsscotland@gmail.com
The show will tour throughout Scotland, stopping
in Findhorn, Stirling, Edinburgh, Isle of Mull,
Jemima Thewes :: debut album - 'Calling'
Released - Out Now @ https://shop.lastnightfromglasgow.com/products/jemima-thewes-calling
Jemima Thewes is a singer/
songwriter who grew up in the
highlands of Scotland in an
atmospheric landscape which
continues to help fuel the bones of
her material.
She sings traditional songs and her own
material. A lover of ballads, but too shy to share
them with anyone, it wasn't until 2013 when she
was greatly impacted by an illness which took
her to the edge of her life and back again that
she truly found her voice and began writing
songs in earnest.
Jemima writes songs that are deeply textured
with layers of grit, tenderness, mischief, humour
and wisdom. Her debut album 'Calling' is
inspired by the fleetingness of life and the
tragicomedy-ness of human existence. It was
recorded and produced
by producer and multiinstrumentalist
Tim Lane
(Hidden Orchestra) who
also accompanies
Jemima musically on a
potent array of rhythmic
tuned percussion, drum
kit and backing vocals.
The album holds new work written by Jemima,
plus a traditional ballad and features various
musician pals to create an enveloping folksy
fusion of dark songs and bright, deep rhythms.
With lyrics and melodies that creep up and catch
you unawares and beats that get you moving in
spirit and body. These cloud-hopping tales are
told by warm, powerful vocals and carried on a
bed of heavy, playful percussion and strings,
evoking highland landscapes, the underworld
and transformation.
The musician pals featured are: Morag Brown
and Kate Young on fiddles, Misha Somerville on
low whistle, Jem Le Lievre on bass guitar, on top
of the core 4-piece band of David Boyter on
guitar and mandolin, Susan Appelbe on cello,
Tim Lane on tongue drum, kit, and backing
vocals, and Jemima on voice, ukulele, tenor
guitar, bass guitar, shruti box and jaws harp.
The album follows Jemima's debut EP Bright
Shadows, also recorded with Tim Lane, which
was released independently in 2015 to much
acclaim, with radio plays on Travelling Folk and
Late Junction.
PG Ciarletta :: Single - 'Please Stay'
Released - Out Now @ available to stream and download on all major platforms
Scottish-Italian indie singersongwriter
PG Ciarletta has burst
back onto the music scene with his
high-energy, bittersweet new
single. Entitled 'Please Stay', it will
be his first new material to be
released this year.
Born in Fife, and now with a growing footprint across Scotland, PG Ciarletta is the
latest singer-songwriter in a long line of Scots with Italian blood making a name
for himself with his distinctive vocal tone, relatable lyrics, rousing anthemic
melodies, cheeky character and undeniable stage presence.
Citing artists such as Gerry Cinnamon, Jake Bugg and
The View as inspiration, PG Ciarletta naturally delivers
a catchy feel-good indie-alternative vibe. From writing
songs in his bedroom to playing on stages across the
UK, from Edinburgh to Liverpool, a lot has changed for
the emerging Scottish act in the last few years.
PG Ciarletta started playing guitar at age 12 and went
on to teach himself how to play bass, electric and
acoustic guitar and percussion pedals, before taking himself to regular local open
mic nights. Since lockdown, he has been steadily building momentum as a
musician - writing and performing original material and honing his craft at iconic
grassroots venues across the UK.
In 2020 his debut single The Sesh topped the UK iTunes Alternative Chart and
peaked at number 8 on the Official Scottish Singles Chart. The following year
Bonnie Toun was BBC Radio Scotland Afternoon Show’s Track of the Week and his
most recent single, 27, was aired on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One.
Building on the success of his previous releases, Please Stay is a festival anthem
landing just in time for the end of the summer season. It maintains Phil’s
signature acoustic guitar foundations and captivating vocals, while adding a more
powerful electronic aspect to create an even fuller sound than ever before.
The single touches on feelings of not wanting a positive situation to end, although
it may have already run its course, and hoping that good times return. The
optimistic themes of the lyrics are mirrored in the upbeat and energetic sound -
with a hook in the bridge which is ideal for a festival singalong. PG Ciarletta will
get the chance to do just that as he gears up to perform at Vibration Festival in
Falkirk on 4th September, and at Outwith Festival in Dunfermline on 10th
September.
PG Ciarletta said: “I’m really excited about the release of Please Stay, I think
I’ve managed to capture a hopeful feeling a lot of people are going to relate to.
It’s such a big song and I think it’s going to sound epic live so I can’t wait to
perform it for a crowd.
“Seeing the reaction to my previous singles has been amazing, so much more
than I could have imagined when I was writing songs in my bedroom! I think this
is the perfect follow up and it’s out just in time for the end of the summer. I hope
people love listening to it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it, and that it becomes
part of people’s soundtracks of the year!”
The single was recorded at Morsecode Studios by Liam McCluskey, and mixed and
mastered by Jamie Holmes at Castle of Doom Studios.
