Heineken Champions Cup
Leinster Rugby moved into the
quarter-finals of the Heineken
Champions Cup thanks to a 56-20
victory over Connacht Rugby at
Aviva Stadium.
James Lowe was front and centre for half
of the eight tries and Robbie Henshaw
grabbed a brace in a comprehensive
performance, bringing the aggregate
total to 82-41 over the two legs.
In what was a first for both teams, Leinster
manoeuvred the tricky back-to-back tie
well with Lowe’s four tries providing a
highlight on the day.
Tadhg Furlong and Jamison Gibson-
Park were also on the scoresheet in the
comfortable win.
United Rugby Championship
Leinster Rugby came within inches
of completing a courageous late
comeback against the Cell C
Sharks in Round 16 of the URC.
This was always going to be a tall
assignment for Leinster’s young brigade
in the face of the more mature South
African side, starters Brian Deeny, John
McKee and replacement Lee Barron all
making their provincial debuts.
Ahead by three thanks largely to the boot
of Ciarán Frawley at the break, and tries
from Scott Penny and Tommy O’Brien,
Leinster were put under intense pressure
by the hosts in the second period.
Two yellow cards did not help the cause
and Sharks edged ahead before a last
stand kept Leinster at bay.
DHL Stormers 20
United Rugby Championship
Leinster Rugby came away with
a valuable losing bonus point
from Cape Town that secured a
first-place finish with one round
left to play in the United Rugby
Championship.
The Stormers had put together a string
of six wins to be one more away from
securing second place in the league.
If Leinster needed any reminder of the
dangers posed by the in-form South
Africans, they were rocked back on their
heels by Damian Willemse’s mesmerising
counter and fellow centre Ruan Nel’s
finish after just 30 seconds.
Again, the traveling side were hit with two
yellow cards and Ed Byrne’s try on the
hour had the hosts sweating but a penalty
try saw out the win for them.
