Farm Fables Jane Howard gets organised this month as she sorts the keepers from the sellers in preparation for the new year <strong>October</strong> represents the end of the farming year. Harvests are all safely gathered in and historically this was always the time farms changed hands, annual rents became payable and labourers moved jobs. Life at Coopers Farm is also coming to the end of another busy and productive year. The herd of Sussex cows have all been PD’d or pregnancy diagnosed. The bull went in with them in May and by scanning them now we can get a fairly accurate date for the arrival of the new calves next February. But in order to give the pregnant cows a few months ‘off’, and to keep the calves growing on, it will soon be time to wean the calves. Up till now their diets have consisted solely of grass and mother’s milk, so before we can wean them they need to get used to eating a sort of muesli concoction of barley, sugar beet and oats which will be their source of protein during the winter months. To do this we have a gate with a calf size hole in it – called a creep gate. As the cattle move around the farm from field to field we secure the gate in the gateways and then put the grub in a trough the other side of the gate. The calves soon learn to pop through the gap for the hard stuff and then back again to mum for the white stuff – simple until some of the greedy mums spend hours trying to squeeze through too for a delicious snack and block the hole. Luckily, so far, no one has got permanently stuck. The lambs have already been weaned. Ewes work on a five, four, three system – five months pregnant, four months milking and three months off. The rams will go back in with the girls in November, they know it and are beginning to smell very musky and become rather ornery – a lovely farming word for general bolshiness. The ewes, meanwhile, will spend <strong>October</strong> enjoying the best grazing on the farm, known as flushing, to encourage them to produce lots of good healthy eggs which will hopefully result in more twins. Rather like the rams we too are looking forward to another year on the farm This is also the time to go through all the ewes to remove from the flock any that we don’t want to breed from again. In the spring when they lambed they were all scored with a possible top score of four. One point is given for an easy lambing, one for strong lambs, one for good mothering and one for twins. Any ewes scoring two or less will not be bred from again. Sadly it’s also time up for any old ones that have reached the end of their productive life, usually because their incisor teeth have fallen out – referred to as broken mouthed. Once this happens, around six, they can’t graze well enough to produce a healthy lamb and then supply it with milk, there’s no NHS dental service in sheep world. Then we turn to the female replacements born in spring ’21 that will go to the rams for the first time in November ’22 , known as tegs or shearling ewes. With sixty breeding ewes we usually end up with about a hundred lambs, half boys and half girls. The boys and the less impressive girls will go off to market after weaning, leaving us with about thirty good female lambs. These will be kept on the farm through their first winter and now is the time to go through them to decide which we will keep and which to sell. When they are born, if they are female and one of a twin we clip a notch in their ear so eighteen months later we can go through the bunch of tegs, pick out ten that carry the twin gene and sell the rest for breeding.
