Shining Bright
Returning with a new after-dark trail this autumn, Ignite is back
at Polesden Lacey in the Surrey Hills from 20 October until 6
November. The Edwardian formal gardens at the National Trust
property provide the perfect setting for this lantern-lit walk
which takes you between flickering flames and majestic trees.
There are plenty of new installations as you pick up your
hand-held lanterns to guide you through the woodland walk
featuring fairy-tale scenes from childhood favourites
Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and
the Beanstalk and Goldilocks. The field of fire has over a
thousand flickering lights in front of the magnificent
façade of the house and, not for the faint-hearted, the
fire-breathing dragons are back! Continuing the theme
of playfulness, walk across an illuminated chess board and
between giant gold and copper chess pieces. Then step onto
a make-believe dancefloor, where you are surrounded by
dancing couples – life-sized sculptures twirling under the
stars. Enter the walled garden which is richly lit by hundreds
of flickering flames and then through a botanical wonderland
filled with larger-than-life flowers crafted by hand from
glistening metal. The trail has been specially designed for
visitors of all ages to enjoy and tickets are selling fast, so book

Saturday 15 October sees the opening
of an exciting exhibition at McAllister
Thomas Gallery in Godalming. Oil
painter Georgia Hart was a marine
biologist in a previous life and now
celebrates her love of the natural
world through her evocative art. She
works solely with palette knives, in
oil on paper. The knives allow her
to achieve her signature impasto
style, utilising bold and energetic
marks in thick layers of paint, while
remaining buttery and clean in feeling.

portraying the variety and beauty
