NIGHT OF THE LIVING DRAG

RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE’S YVIE ODDLY LEADS

A CAST OF SEVEN SINFUL QUEENS

BY BEN NELSON

RuPaul’s Drag Race All

Stars 7 queen Yvie Oddly

returns to New York City

on October 30th to star

in RuPaul’s Drag Race

Night of the Living Drag,

an extravagantly produced

Halloween spectacular

that draws inspiration from

Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Oddly plays the role of The

Boogieman who summons

a cast of sinful RuPaul’s

Drag Race queens from the

depths of fiery hell. The cast

includes Aquaria the Sloth,

Asia O’Hara the Envious,

Bosco the Lustful, DeJa Skye the Greedy, Kim Chi the Glutton, Lady Camden the

Proud, Rosé the Vain, and Vanessa Vanjie the Wrathful.

“I am excited to host a fierce and frightful exploration into all of world’s most wicked

sins,” says Oddly. We spoke with the ultimate queen of curiosities from her Denver

home.

INTERVIEW >>>>

You will be in NYC

to host the annual live

Halloween spectacular,

RuPaul’s Drag Race

Night of the Living

Drag. What can fans

expect from the show?

Yvie Oddly: This show

has got some of the most

amazing performers

brought from the depths

of hell. I hope the fans

are ready for a spooky

sinful spectacle; the

Halloweeniest Halloween

that ever hallowed.

You star as the

Boogieman.

Yvie Oddly: I am! The

boogieman is a really fun

character to play because

he seems spooky but he’s

just like everyone else.

He’s got his night job of

hiding under kids’ beds,

but he really just wants

to be free to boogie with

baddies.

Aquaria stars as the

deadly sin, Sloth. Is she

a sloth in real life?

Yvie Oddly: Not at all.

Aquaria is one of the

hardest working queens.

I’m so excited to see

Aquaria because I cannot

think of anyone more

motivated and dedicated

than she is, especially on

stage.

Rosé plays the deadly sin, Vain. In real

life, is she always in front of a mirror?

Yvie Oddly: Of course she is. What drag

queen isn’t?!

Asia is “Envious”. What does Asia

have that you covet?

Yvie Oddly: The thing I most envy about

Asia is that she has her shit together!

Of all the queens starring in RuPaul’s

Drag Race Night of the Living Drag,

who is the most sinful?

Yvie Oddly: Why, me darling! I have the

most skeletons hiding in my closet, too.

Have you ever experienced stage fright,

Yvie?

Yvie Oddly: I still get stage fright quite

often actually, but I’m a thrill-seeker so

that’s a part of what I love most about

performing. I conquer my fear every time I

get on stage and share my pure, unfiltered

energy with crowds.

What scares you the most?

Yvie Oddly: I am terrified of fish and being

in open water. I know it sounds silly but

there is some logic involved. Human

beings cannot survive in water. Fish can!

I’m convinced they are terrestrial aliens

and that the ocean is a whole world we’ll

never be able to fully explore.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race Night of the

Living Drag” takes place Sunday,

October 30 at Kings Theatre in

Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are available at

- $99. There are also a limited number

of VIP passes that include a pre-show

meet-and-greet available for $249.

CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT

NIJAWWON

MATTHEWS

CHOREOGRAPHER TO THE STARS

Nijawwon Matthews was one of the hottest sights on the island this

past weekend. He works for the Joffrey Ballet and for Pace University,

and he has worked with icons including Mary J Blige, Angela Bassett,

Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, and many others. I decided to take

advantage of his good nature and have a conversation with him.

INTERVIEW >>>

Hello, Nijawwon. What made you

want to be a choreographer?

It wasn’t the fact that I necessarily

wanted to be a choreographer. I wanted

to be a dancer. My grandmother got me

into dancing, and I fell in love with it. It

was something that just gave me more

discipline. Growing up, I did basketball,

football, wrestling, gymnastics and

martial arts, but dance touched me in

a way that was just outside of all those

things that we normally go through. My

grandmother got me into dancing, and

because of her, it allowed me to dive

deeper into knowing who I am as a

person–what I stand for and also what

I want to do and be comfortable with. It

gave me structure in a way that I didn’t

have before and didn’t realize I needed.

I was a very energetic kid.

A good friend of mine–a

choreographer–asked me to

come in and assist him for a

project. It was for the Joffrey

Ballet. I assisted him at the

school in New York City. At

the time, the artistic director

happened to walk in and

asked if I would like to work for

Joffrey.

So many opportunities came

from that because I guess

people liked what I did.

Then jobs came in and more

opportunities came in to a

point where I could say I’ve

done a lot of amazing work.

What’s your goal in life and

who would you like to work

with more than anybody on

the planet?

Right now, I’m at a place in

my life where I’m just being

present with every opportunity

that’s come to me.

I would like to work with

Zendaya.

Any advice for any aspiring

dancers?

Keep going. When the world

feels like it’s crumbling,

when you get all these no’s,

when you feel like nothing is

happening for you, just know

that you believe in your talent

and who you are as a person

and let that persevere. Keep

going, because someone

will see that one day. Trust

yourself in that space and be

authentic. Perseverance.

FLIES

AGAIN

WITH INSPIRING

NEW CLUB

SINGLE

Kristine W is riding dance floors full speed ahead this season

with her new single, “Can’t Look Back”, the first release from her

upcoming album. Produced by James Hurr, one of the masters

of UK House, the song is a lush, soulful club groove, made even

more powerful with its message of rising up and appreciating the

day. It was inspired by the passings of Kristine’s mother and sister.

She says she found solace through writing the song and hopes by

sharing “Can’t Look Back” now with the world that it helps those

experiencing similar loss to move forward too.

INTERVIEW >>>>

You have faced some big personal

challenges these past few years.

Kristine W: My older sister Viki passed

away from colon cancer two years ago.

None of the family could believe that she

died from a cancer that was treatable. I

was grieving my sister and trying to be

there for my mom, but I intuitively knew

that she was not going to survive the loss

of her oldest daughter and best friend.

Mom passed away due to complications

from a stroke last year. These two

angels were always on either side of me,

cheering me on. It has been very difficult

staying motivated without them. I can’t

believe they are both gone. Somedays,

I experience a crippling grief. At shows, I

have had the opportunity to meet others

experiencing similar loss. We hug and cry

together over our lost ones. Thankfully, I

am blessed with my music. It has been a

lifeline.

What have you learned about yourself and

your ability to overcome obstacles?

KW: I have learned that God gives his

toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.

I try to be brave and remember how much

my mother and sister contributed to my

success. I owe it to them to push

forward.

pretty good, but not perfect. We let the

song marinate for a few months before

giving it a second look. The last part we

recorded was the “Rise up” section. When

I looked up from my congas and saw the

look on my engineer’s face, I knew that we

had made something special.

Does the song serve as a prelude to

what’s in store for your next album?

KW: This song has a message that

everyone needs to hear. I know listening

to it during its many rewrites helped me

get through some rough days. There was

a reason Tony sent me that simple blank

canvas. I feel like this song and others on

the upcoming album are good medicine.

We have all been through some traumatic

challenges these past few years, and

it’s important that we do not let the pain

defeat or define us. It’s natural and healthy

to look back and reflect every once in a

while, but we can’t live in the past. We

need to keep pressing on.

Kristine W’s “Can’t Look Back” is

available now on all digital retailers via

Kristine’s own imprint, Fly Again Music

Productions. For more information,

visit http://kristinew.com.

When did you begin the work on

“Can’t Look Back”?

KW: Tony (Moran) sent me the

first draft of the track two years

ago. It was very sparse at the

time, but I could tell that it had a

magic to it. I started playing around

with it, writing and rewriting. Tony

didn’t like the first verse melody

I presented to him, but he loved

the chorus, so I kept working on

making the verses stronger and the

lyrics more relevant. I then met with

my collaborator, Mark Matson, to

record the first vocal demo. It was
