Produced by James Hurr, one of the mastersof UK House, the song is a lush, soulful club groove, made evenmore powerful with its message of rising up and appreciating theday. It was inspired by the passings of Kristine’s mother and sister.She says she found solace through writing the song and hopes bysharing “Can’t Look Back” now with the world that it helps thoseexperiencing similar loss to move forward too.
INTERVIEW >>>>You have faced some big personalchallenges these past few years.Kristine W: My older sister Viki passedaway from colon cancer two years ago.None of the family could believe that shedied from a cancer that was treatable. Iwas grieving my sister and trying to bethere for my mom, but I intuitively knewthat she was not going to survive the lossof her oldest daughter and best friend.Mom passed away due to complicationsfrom a stroke last year. These twoangels were always on either side of me,cheering me on. It has been very difficultstaying motivated without them. I can’tbelieve they are both gone. Somedays,I experience a crippling grief. At shows, Ihave had the opportunity to meet othersexperiencing similar loss. We hug and crytogether over our lost ones. Thankfully, Iam blessed with my music. It has been alifeline.What have you learned about yourself andyour ability to overcome obstacles?KW: I have learned that God gives histoughest battles to his strongest soldiers.I try to be brave and remember how muchmy mother and sister contributed to mysuccess. I owe it to them to pushforward.pretty good, but not perfect. We let thesong marinate for a few months beforegiving it a second look. The last part werecorded was the “Rise up” section. WhenI looked up from my congas and saw thelook on my engineer’s face, I knew that wehad made something special.Does the song serve as a prelude towhat’s in store for your next album?KW: This song has a message thateveryone needs to hear. I know listeningto it during its many rewrites helped meget through some rough days. There wasa reason Tony sent me that simple blankcanvas. I feel like this song and others onthe upcoming album are good medicine.We have all been through some traumaticchallenges these past few years, andit’s important that we do not let the paindefeat or define us. It’s natural and healthyto look back and reflect every once in awhile, but we can’t live in the past. It was very sparse at thetime, but I could tell that it had amagic to it. I started playing aroundwith it, writing and rewriting. Tonydidn’t like the first verse melodyI presented to him, but he lovedthe chorus, so I kept working onmaking the verses stronger and thelyrics more relevant. I then met withmy collaborator, Mark Matson, torecord the first vocal demo. It was
