Pat Lam says the West Country derby is 

a fixture for the whole community to be 

excited by. 

The Bears kick off the new campaign 

against Bath at Ashton Gate in front of more 

than 23,000 supporters – and the Director 

of Rugby says everyone is relishing the 

occasion. 

“It’s a fixture that our whole community is 

excited by. We are excited for the season and 

the derby takes care of itself, you don’t have 

to talk about intensity or physicality. 

“We are very proud of what we’ve done 

[against Bath in the past] but that’s history 

- it’s about the here and the now and kicking 

the competition off very well for us.” 

“Obviously the biggest thing after the season 

we had last year was the review,” said the 

Bears director of rugby. 

“That’s gone well, with everything we needed 

to do better and the beauty of that is that 

you get quick solutions, you get clarity on 

what you need to do and the reason why 

pre-season has gone well is that we have 

executed those things and hopefully they’ll 

be reflected in our performances this year, 

starting with Bath.”

Bristol Bears U18s kicked off the new Academy League 

season with two bonus-point wins from two, with 

victory over West Country rivals Bath and Gloucester. 

The Cubs ran in four tries in a 25-15 win against the 

Cherry and Whites, with Tom Ormsby, Dan Williams, Joe 

Wooler and Jamie Wood touching down in a commanding 

away win. 

Gloucester struck early on, before Ormsby opened the 

scoring for the Bears, latching on to Isaac Campbell-Wu’s 

perfectly judged grubber kick to touch down. 

Dan Williams edged the visitors in front only for 

Gloucester to peg the Cubs back once again, and then 

edge themselves ahead with a penalty. 

But after a yellow card to Joe Webb, the Cubs rallied 

with Wooler and Wood sealing maximum points on the 

road. 

In the opening fixture against Bath at Shaftesbury 

Park, the Cubs struck three times inside a first half 

that was twice delayed due to serious injuries to two 

Bath players. 

Tom Ormsby scorched over for a quick-fire double 

inside the opening quarter, applying expert finishes in 

the corner after some razor-sharp attacking play from 

the Bears. 

Archie Prewett powered over for a third to open up a 

19-0 half-time lead, before Bath hit back early in the 

second half. 

Dan Williams grabbed his side’s bonus-point try 

midway through the second half, only for Bath to pull 

another back and make it a 12-point game. 

But the Cubs held on to secure a commanding 26-14 

victory on the opening night and kick off the new 

season in style.

CLUB IN FOCUS: 

NAILSEA & BACKWELL RFC 

ABOUT THE CLUB 

Formed in 1972, the club is proudly starting its 50th 

anniversary season. They have three senior teams 

playing league rugby, plus Vets and touch teams. Last 

season was the most successful in the club’s history, 

with the First XV winning the Somerset Premier 

Division and the covid-delayed Bristol Combination 

Vase, with Yann Thomas a key member of the coaching 

team. 

BT Sport 

This success for the seniors has been underpinned 

by a flourishing junior section. Offering rugby for 

boys and girls from five to 18 years old, Nailsea and 

Backwell have c.300 junior players. It is a genuine 

community club providing a variety of sporting and 

social opportunities to the place where we live. 

WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION 

The club has worked closely with BBCF for many years 

now and regularly hosts Player Development Camps. 

These are hugely successful both in the number of 

people attending, but also in inspiring our younger 

players to want to strive for more. As part of the club’s 

50th-anniversary celebrations, BBCF are running 

‘Super Saturday’ training sessions for our mini-midis 

too. This close relationship between N&B and BBCF has 

also had an impact on the coaching philosophy at the 

club, which is hugely positive. 

CLUB CONNEXION 

We believe Club Connexion will formalise and develop 

the relationship we already have with the Bears. It will 

also create new opportunities for coach development, 

which is a really important strategic aim for our club. 

We also hope it will make professional rugby more 

accessible to our many members through the discount 

and benefit schemes. We are really excited to be part 

of this.
