We’re back on home soil this weekend
against a familiar opponent in Crystal
Palace and once again I’d like to
welcome the players, staff and
travelling supporters to the Robins
High Performance Centre.
After the international break we have seemingly picked
up where we left off, which encouraging for us as
coaching staff. In previous instances the breaks have
seemed to stump the momentum and rhythm we have
worked so hard build.
Sunday’s victory away to Sheffield United was no easy
feat. They’re a tough opponent on any given day, let
alone when playing on a bigger stage at Bramall Lane
where performances levels always rise an extra 10-15
per cent.
It was a fiery contest with neither team looking to take
a backwards step. The way the contest shaped up, it
became more about managing emotions and letting the
football do the talking which the group did superbly.
The last month has been a challenge for the players
and staff with personal tragedies for two of our family.
Jess Powell and Ted Woolley sadly passed away,
which has been incredibly tough for both Ella and
Jesse to deal with. They have and will continue to have
our full support at this difficult time, but I must say the
way they’ve continued to apply themselves in training
and games is nothing short of immense. It takes a lot
for anyone to try and continue life as normal when you
lose someone you love.
A word I mentioned above was family - I truly believe
that is what we are. The way the players have
supported one another throughout the early part of
the season has been heart-warming to see. After all,
that is what we’re trying to build; a team of individuals
that pick each other up, a team that are there for one
another when in need and a group that drives each
other to improve.
We’ve seen success on the pitch so far this season
and while there is still plenty of room for growth and
development, we believe we have a phenomenal team
of people and that’s going to go a long way to us
having a successful season.

City Women have a 100% record
in BS8 so far this season and the
young defender Naomi Layzell is
keen to achieve ‘fortress’ status
at home.
“We picked up a great three points
on the road last weekend,” said
Layzell.
Layzell is looking to maintain Bristol City’s
strong start to the Barclays Championship campaign
with Crystal Palace set to visit the Robins High
Performance Centre.
“We’ll be looking to get another
win on the board and keep the ball
rolling.”
The 18-year-old has been an everpresent
in Lauren Smith’s side this
season, part of a defence that has
conceded only two goals in their
opening five Championship fixtures.
“Now it’s important we keep the
HPC as a solid home ground for us
where teams don’t want to come
and face us.
“We take pride in our clean sheets,”
she said.
“We want to keep ticking them off
and if we do that it makes all our
jobs easier, especially when the
forward players are scoring like
they have been.
“Last time we played Palace we
scored four goals so we’re looking
to maintain that confidence in
front of goal and keep creating
opportunities.

“I think they will make changes to
the side we beat last time out but
if we focus on ourselves and play
the way we know we can then we’ll
present a challenge for whatever
team they select.
“Our focus in training is always
primarily on ourselves.”
