FROM THE
EDITOR
Hail to the Gridiron as we celebrate a heckuva game that will be
played on Saturday, while giving a proper tribute to Charley Trippi …
may he and Coach Dooley rest in peace!
VANCE LEAVY
EDITOR IN CHIEF
Like everyone who loves the Red
and Black, my bride (Cheri) and I
are still hollow from the loss of
Vince Dooley this past Friday. He was a
man of so many talents (from history to
horticulture and beyond), but what made
him great was his desire to share his vast expertise with anyone
who was willing to learn.
When I was growing up, he was the mythical, master-mind who
helped shape my love of the Georgia Bulldogs in the 80s.
Then when I reached adulthood, I had the honor of rekindling
the Golden Isles Bulldog Club (as its president), which created the
opportunity to really get to know Coach Dooley. You could learn
so much from him by simply watching how he treated people. I
remember the time Cheri and I helped him at a book signing at
our local hospital. The lines went as far as your eye could see, but
each person got his or her own special time with Coach. He was
always the consummate gentleman.
Always!
Then Cheri and I had the idea to start Bulldawg Illustrated, so in
our mid 20s we shuttled off to Athens to meet with Coach (who
was AD at the time) about our idea. Basically, we were going to
the Godfather with hopes of his blessing, but knowing he might
balk at what we were envisioning. Well, 20 years later, this story
continues because not only did Coach love our idea, he actually
offered to write a column in it. So with Coach as a writer and the
always generous Jack Davis providing terrific cartoons, BI was off
and running.
Over the last few years, from time to time, I did get the
opportunity to thank Coach Dooley for his help and endorsement.
He truly did give us instant credibility, so Cheri and I will forever
hold a special place in our heart for him. Unfortunately, now it will
have to be in our memories. What a man!!
However, without a doubt, I know Coach wants everyone in
the Bulldog Nation to not be somber in his passing. Instead it’s
time to celebrate a terrific life combined with getting behind our
stellar football team for one doozy of football game that will be
played on Saturday in Athens … Hail to the Gridiron ++
This issue will definitely get you ready for the Vols, but it’s also
special because we are celebrating the life and athletic prowess
of Charley Trippi, who the Bulldog Nation lost a few weeks back.
Starting on page 54, you’re going to love what Jeff Dantzler did
for the Trippi tribute. Since Mr. Trippi’s sports exploits probably
aren’t known that well by the newer generations of Dawgs out
there, I challenged JD (in honor of No. 62) to see if he could come
up with 62 neat nuggets about Trippi’s career, which of course he
passed with flying colors. By the way, the yellow blazer Mr. Trippi
is wearing for our cover is because he is an inductee in the Pro
Football Hall of Fame. He’s actually in several others, but I’m going
to let you learn that in our feature.
I do have a fun story about Mr. Trippi. We were in year one or
two of doing Bulldawg Illustrated and Cheri’s cousin (Gloria Cobb)
scored an interview with him for us. When we showed up to his
house, we found Mr. Trippi (who was then 82) on top of his roof
blowing leaves. It was priceless, but made total sense when I got
to shake his monster hand once the interview started. He was
built like a tree trunk. I even remember joking with some of my
buddies that someone younger would be foolish to ever think
about mixing up with Mr. Trippi.
Enjoy our tribute … Hail to the Gridiron … Rest in Peace …
Charley Trippi.
We will also publish our Coach Dooley tribute in the Georgia
Tech issue, which is ideal so we have enough time to do it the
justice it certainly deserves.
Now, it’s time for everyone to get focused for the No. 2 ranked
Volunteers on Saturday. And who better to lead the charge (our
cover) than Kirby Smart, Stetson Bennett and Nolan Smith. These
men of the gridiron are leaders first and foremost and their duty
that lies nearest is getting everyone on their side of ball ready for
Tennessee.
Man, this game is going to be something … Hail to the Gridiron ++
Beyond the Trippi tribute and our normal sports, the BI camera
was in overdrive during the days of festivities that make the
Georgia-Florida game so special. Enjoy the over 100 photos.
For now, I won’t weigh-in too heavily about the discussion of
the game moving to home and home, but if that happens the
tradition will go with it. And being a Golden Isles native, it would
be devastating not only for the fans, but also for the many
businesses that benefit from Georgia fans spending sometimes
an entire week on the islands for the game.
Also, in this issue, enjoy getting to know Augustan, John Cates
in our Proust Q&A (page 52). He’s my kind of guy since he would
love to never lose to Florida again. Kirby isn’t perfect against the
Gators, but my oh my, it’s been fun whipping the reptiles of late.
Then on pages 28 and 29, Savannah insurance advisor Cindy
Robinett is our Georgia Girls feature for this issue. I know Cheri
definitely echoes Cindy on her choice of favorite books … “Where
the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. I may even have to check out
the movie once the football season slows down. Finally, Loran
Smith continues our Bulldogs of the 4th Estate with Reg Murphy
(page 50). Like Coach Dooley, Reg is a renaissance man that
funny enough also wrote for BI. He is the best and for sure is an
honorary Bulldog, through and through.
Alright Dawgs fans … let’s get ready to rumble with Smokey and
the Vols. Rest in Peace Charley Trippi and Vince Dooley … Hail to
the Gridiron ++ and Go Dawgs!!
‘The Scintillating Sicilian,’ Charley Trippi was
amazing, was a winner, was a champion...
what an athlete... what a Bulldog... what a life.
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
Charley Trippi is one of the most
dynamic athletes the world has
ever seen and a legendary alltime
great Georgia Bulldog.
Just two months shy of his 101st birthday,
the iconic sporting superhero from the
1940s and 1950s passed away on October
19, 2022 here in Athens at the age of 100.
Born December 14, 1921 in Pittstown,
Pennsylvania, Charles Louis Trippi was
destined for greatness. Emerging from the
famed fertile football fields of talent-rich
Pennsylvania, it was sports that kept Trippi
from the rigors facing coal miners and into
a life of greatness, fame and accolades.
He found his way to Athens with the help
of one of Georgia’s first famous gridiron
standouts. Harold Ketron, who was an All-
Southern standout in Athens at the turn
of the century from 1901-1903, owned
a Coca Cola bottling plant in nearby
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was also
a high school football official, and after
witnessing Trippi’s exploits for undefeated
Pittstown, Ketron got word to Wally Butts
that there was a future star his alma mater
badly needed.
Freshmen weren’t eligible in the early
1940s, but Trippi made a name for himself
on the Bulldogs freshman team while
Frank Sinkwich was leading Georgia’s 1941
team to a 9-1-1 record and the Orange
Bowl Championship.
Sinkwich, who came to Georgia from
Youngstown, Ohio, won the Heisman
Trophy in 1942 while leading the Bulldogs
to the consensus National Championship.
His understudy Trippi was also bursting
onto the scene, these two forming one of
the most talented and successful gridiron
tandems in college football history.
In a 75-0 rout of Florida, Trippi accounted
for four touchdowns and Georgia ascended
to No. 1 in the national polls. The following
week, the Bulldogs were upset by Auburn.
But led by Sinkwich and Trippi, Georgia
would rebound and secure two of the most
significant victories in program annals.
Trippi raced for an 87-yard touchdown
run Between the Hedges, the big play in a
34-0 victory for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs
over the undefeated second ranked
Yellow Jackets from the Flats. That win
clinched Georgia’s first ever Southeastern
Conference title and a berth in the Rose
Bowl against the UCLA Bruins.
With Sinkwich hobbled by an injured
ankle, Trippi stepped into a leading role
and had a spectacular performance on
New Year’s Day in Pasadena. Over 93,000
fans witnessed Trippi’s exploits and the
Bulldogs 9-0 victory over UCLA. He was
retroactively in 1953 named the game’s
Most Valuable Player on the strength of his
25-carry, 130-yard rushing performance
and excellent defensive play. Georgia
broke a scoreless tie in the fourth quarter
when Red Boyd blocked a Bruins punt
for a safety. Sinkwich would then punch
in a touchdown and the Bulldogs, on the
heels of the Rose Bowl triumph were the
consensus national champions, voted No.
1 in six different polls.
Like so many American heroes, Trippi
served the United States of America in the
Army Air Force.
Following the Allied victory and
surrender of the Empire of Japan, Trippi
returned to Georgia to play for the
Bulldogs midway through the 1945
season. Following a pair of losses, Trippi
and the Bulldogs would steamroll through
the second half of the season, highlighted
by a 34-0 win over Florida, 35-0 blanking
of Auburn and 33-0 dominating of Tech in
Atlanta. Against the Gators, Trippi rushed
for a school-record 239 yards, a record
SPORTS COMMUNICATIONS
that stood until Herschel Walker broke it
against Vanderbilt with 283 yards in 1980.
In the Oil Bowl on New Year’s Day 1946,
Georgia defeated Tulsa 20-6 and Trippi was
the Most Valuable Player. He threw a 64-
yard touchdown pass to John Donaldson
to give the Bulldogs a 14-6 lead, and then
scored on a spectacular field-reversing
68-yard punt return in which he ran over a
pair of Tulsa players.
Trippi was the No. 1 overall pick in the
NFL Draft, but chose to return for one final
season in Athens, and the scene was set
for another season to remember.
In the spring of 1946, Trippi batted an
astounding.464 for the Georgia baseball
team. That autumn, Trippi, voted the
Bulldogs team captain, won the Maxwell
Award, was Heisman Trophy runnerup
to Army’s Mr. Outside Glenn Davis,
unanimous first-team All-American and
SEC Player of the Year.
Teaming with fellow future College
Football Hall of Famer Johnny Rauch, the
Bulldogs capped the 1946 season with
a 20-10 victory over North Carolina in
the Sugar Bowl to finish a perfect 11-0,
winning every game by at least 10 points.
Trippi threw a Sugar Bowl record 67-yard
touchdown pass - a mark that stood for a
half century - to Dan Edwards to give the
Bulldogs the lead for good.
The SEC champion Bulldogs were voted
No. 1 in the Williamson Poll. Notre Dame
and Army played to a famous 0-0 tie and
got a majority of the top votes.
The following summer, playing for the
Atlanta Crackers, Trippi led the Southern
Association in batting. The New York
Yankees badly wanted Trippi, seeing him
as the perfect eventual successor to the
Yankee Clipper, Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio. That
honor would go to Mickey Mantle.
Trippi’s heart was a little more in football.
In 1947, he was Rookie of the Year, and
led the Chicago Cardinals to the NFL
Championship. In the 28-21 win over
Philadelphia in the NFL Championship
Game, Trippi scored the first touchdown
on a 44-yard run. He gave the Cardinals a
21-7 lead on a 75 yard punt return.
A member of the College Football Hall of
Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame, Trippi
was a league-leading, record-breaker.
He chalked up a slew of yards rushing,
passing and receiving - going for over
1,000 in all three categories in his NFL
career. Trippi scored touchdowns on runs,
receptions, interception returns and punt
returns and threw for TDs. He was also an
excellent punter.
The legendary Bulldog icon Dan Magill,
who nicknamed him “The Scintillating
Sicilian,” told me Trippi was every bit as
great a safety as he was an offensive
juggernaut. In a 14-0 win over Alabama in
1946, the Crimson Tide blocked a Bulldog
third down punt. Trippi would wrestle
the ball back from the Tide, and Georgia
retained possession. He boomed the next
punt and the shutout stood.
This column could be an encyclopedia
rejoicing in his exploits.
He was amazing.
He was a winner.
He was a champion.
What an athlete.
What a Bulldog.
What a life.
GEORGIA VS TENNESSEE
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
Sanford Stadium is the site for a colossal Southeastern
Conference showdown Saturday afternoon, as top-ranked
Georgia hosts No. 3 Tennessee. Kickoff is set for just after 3:30 for
one of the most ballyhooed games ever Between the Hedges.
Both teams head into the game with perfect 8-0 records.
Tennessee is 4-0 in Southeastern Conference play, while the
reigning national champion Bulldogs are 5-0 in the league.
Both teams are also heading into the game coming off
impressive performances this past weekend, as Tennessee
tattooed Kentucky 44-6 in Knoxville and Georgia defeated
Florida 42-20 in Jacksonville.
Tennessee has experienced a tremendous surge this season.
In his second season, head coach Josh Heupel has the
Volunteers in a stratosphere they have not enjoyed in over 20
years. The hit list is impressive, highlighted by victories over
Florida, LSU and Alabama. Those three SEC traditional powers
have combined 11 of the past 19 national championships.
The 52-49 instant classic triumph over the Crimson Tide was
Tennessee’s first in the series since 2006, the year before Nick
Saban took the head coaching job in Tuscaloosa.
Now Tennessee tries to beat another SEC team with a 21st
century national championship, last year’s in fact.
The Volunteer faithful are savoring every second. They
endured a decade in the 2010s that is the least successful
in the history of the proud program. Heupel’s first team last
season posted a 7-6 record and the Volunteers were trending
upward. But this has been an enormous jump.
At the head of the class for Tennessee is quarterback
Hendon Hooker, a Heisman Trophy front-runner who
is having a season to date on par with the likes of SEC
legends Tim Tebow, Cam Newton and Joe Burrow. He is the
triggerman for the country’s most potent offense.
Kirby Smart has his alma mater in the midst of a golden era
of Georgia Football. Highlighted by last season’s national
championship, since a loss to Florida in 2020, the Bulldogs
have won 26 of their last 27 games.
Over the last five seasons, Smart has led Georgia to four SEC
Championship Games and guided the Bulldogs into the highest
elite stratosphere in the country. Over that stretch, Georgia has
also won five in a row over Tennessee. The Volunteers last beat
Georgia on the Hail Mary in 2016 in Athens.
When it comes to games of this magnitude, there were
vital victories over the Yellow Jackets in 1942 and 1946,
heartbreaking losses to Auburn in 1971 and 1983, and a
memorable victory over Alabama in 1976.
Tickets are hot and expensive. The excitement level is off
the charts. The buildup … electric.
The winner of this one has the inside track to the 2022 title
tilt. The loser isn’t out of the College Football Playoff race.
But there will be no margin for error, and help would likely
be required.
This is one of the Saturdays when legacies are made, and
seasons - possibly championship seasons - are shaped.
BY: COBY SERINA
KIRBY SMART (HEAD COACH) - This will be one of the biggest
regular season matchups that coach Kirby Smart has had to prepare for
in his time at Georgia. It will be on him to ensure that the Dawgs remain
composed against the toughest opponent they’ve faced so far. The Dawgs’
performance against the Vols on Saturday will be the direct results of Smart’s
preparation.
DAIJUN EDWARDS (RB #30) - The Tenneesee Volunteers are one
of the nation’s leaders in plays ran per game. When they have the ball they
play fast, and they use that tempo to their advantage, keeping opposing
teams on edge. That’s where Daijun Edwards comes in. Using the ground
game, Georgia will manage tempo their own way holding onto the ball and
keeping out of the hands of the volatile Volunteers offense.
HEAD COACH
STETSON BENNETT (QB #13) - Similarly to Edwards, Stetson Bennett
should be tasked with the role of game manager against Tennessee.
The Volunteers will ask a lot of Bennett’s leadership. In what will be the
Georgia Bulldogs most anticipated matchup of the year. It will be Bennett’s
responsibility to pay close attention to the details that will make or break this
game. Though the Volunteer’s Hendon Hooker has all the hype right now,
many forget about Bennett’s 2022 campaign. Thus far he’s thrown for over
2,000 total passing yards and should only add to that come Saturday.
LADD MCCONKEY (WR #84) - Explosiveness and efficient offensive
drives will be key to getting ahead of the Volunteers, and explosiveness
is just what third-year wideout Ladd McConkey has to offer. Last year
McConkey caught 31 passes for 447 yards, and halfway through this year,
he’s already on pace to almost double that. Georgia will need to implement
his speed into the game plan in order to keep up with the Volunteers.
CHRISTOPHER SMITH
DEFENSIVE BACK
JALEN CARTER (DL #88) - Jalen Carter is undoubtedly the best
interior defensive lineman in the country, he just hasn’t had the opportunity
to play because of injury. In his limited time against Florida last Saturday,
you could see him moving people and affecting the quarterback. That
type of disruption should be what you see against the Volunteers. He’s still
recovering from his MCL injury, but he’s good enough to play. Another
week’s worth of treatment should allow him to play a bigger role.
CHRISTOPHER SMITH (DB #29) - Redshirt senior Chris Smith is
playing absolutely out of his mind. At the safety position he’s made 27
tackles, three pass deflections, two interceptions, and one sack. You can trust
him to do almost anything on the defense. In his final year at Georgia, Smith
has earned a major leadership position on the team and his play has shown
he’s worthy of that.
JAVON BULLARD
DEFENSIVE BACK
JAVON BULLARD (DB #22) - Coach Smart said that one thing
Tennesee does well is run the ball. Playing at STAR, Javon Bullard’s presence
on the field will allow the Georgia defense to guard the speed of a receiver
while maintaining enough physicality to stop the run. With the tempo at
which the Volunteers play, keeping a player like Bullard on the field makes
sense because of his versatility.
Todd Gurley, one of the all-time, elite running backs
in Georgia football history, carried 28 times for 208
yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Bulldogs 35-
32 win over the Vols in 2014.
One of the most electrifying plays in Georgia
history came in Knoxville in 2003, as Sean Jones
returned a fumble 92 yards for a TD on the final
play of the first half in a 41-14 Bulldogs win.
A pair of tremendous tailbacks had huge
performances against Tennessee in Georgia’s 28-17
1988 season-opening victory, with Rodney Hampton
running for 196 yards and Tim Worley 144.
VOLUNTEERS TO WATCH
BY CLAY WATKINS
JOSH HEUPEL (HEAD COACH) - In his second year in charge,
Heupel has completely restored and revamped a program that has
dealt with its fair share of controversy and issues over the past two
decades. His no huddle, quick-tempo offense is reminiscent of Oregon’s
offense under Chip Kelly years ago. Heupel has already proven he
is capable of winning big-time games at home. Tennessee’s most
competitive game was on the road against Pitt. Heupel would solidify
UT’s return to glory with a road victory over the No.1 ranked Dawgs.
HENDON HOOKER (QB #5) - Hooker has taken the SEC by storm
this year and most people view him as the Heisman favorite. The senior
has thrown for 2,338 yards, 21 touchdowns, and just one interception.
Hooker also poses a threat on the ground as he has rushed the ball
73 times for 338 yards and four touchdowns. Hooker throws one of
the best deep balls in the country and looks to stretch the field on
opposing teams playing man coverage. Expect Hooker to utilize his
versatility to try and keep this potent Bulldog defense guessing.
JALIN HYATT (WR #11) - Hyatt is one of the fastest players in the
nation and has racked up the most yards and touchdowns in the SEC.
Hyatt has already reeled in 45 catches for just shy of 1000 yards. Along
with that, he has a remarkable 14 touchdown catches. The speedster
is averaging just over 20 yards a reception and will be a critical factor
in Tennessee’s ability to throw the ball deep.
DEFENSIVE BACK
JABARI SMALL (RB #2) - Small has 110 rushes on the year
for 475 yards and eight touchdowns. The junior from Memphis,
Tennessee is only 5-11, but is 215 pounds, making him a very physical
rusher who doesn’t fear contact. Although the passing game gets
the majority of attention in this Tennessee offense, Small does a
tremendous job keeping defenses honest which allows Tennessee to
take those deep shots that can blow a game wide open.
TREVON FLOWERS (DB #1) - Flowers is the statistical leader
on the Vol’s defense. The fifth-year senior from Atlanta has amassed
46 tackles this season, which leads the team. He is also tied for the
team lead in interceptions with two. Flowers is stronger than his size
may suggest and is not afraid to put his pads in the middle of the
action. Flowers has been a vital part of this Tennessee secondary in
previous years and if the Vols expect to have success on that side of
the football then it will start with his play in the secondary.
AARON BEASLEY (LB #24) - Beasley is second on the team
in tackles with 44 on the season, just a few shy of Trevon Flowers’
total. The senior from Franklin, Georgia will be critical in Tennessee’s
defensive success against the Dawgs. Tennessee’s defense and
especially the linebacking core was a question coming into the
season, but players like Beasley have provided stability and
production for the defense.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
The Volunteers have produced a pair of Heisman
Trophy runners-up in their football history, Bobby
Majors in 1956 (Paul Hornung) and Peyton Manning in
1997 (Charles Woodson).
One of the most dominating players in Southeastern
Conference and NFL history, defensive lineman Doug
Atkins has his No. 91 retired at Tennessee and played
in eight Pro Bowls.
One of the best teams in Tennessee history, the
Volunteers of 1989 shared the SEC title with Alabama
and Auburn, while posting an 11-1 record and beating
Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl.
FIVE KEYS
FOR A DAWGS VICTORY
1
HINDER HOOKER - Tennessee senior signal caller Hendon Hooker is a Heisman trophy
front-runner in the midst of a spectacular season. A transfer from Virginia Tech prior to
last season, he didn’t even start center in 2021. But since winning the job, Hooker has
performed as well as any quarterback in the country. He is an accurate passer - threads the
needle - with a big arm, touch and poise. His touchdown to interception ratio is spectacular.
Hooker is also a tremendous runner. Defending him and one of the nation’s best offenses is
a chore no team has been able to successfully undertake thus far this season. It starts with
making Hooker uncomfortable. Georgia must get pressure, while also keeping containment
and not over-rushing and over pursuing. Sounds easy doesn’t it … it won’t be!
MAKE PLAYS ON BALLS IN AIR - Hooker will put the ball in the air, and the
Volunteers have a slew of top flight wide receivers, led by Jalin Hyatt, who caught five
2touchdown passes in Tennessee’s 52-49 win over Alabama. A healthy Cedric Tillman, Bru
McCoy and Ramel Keyton headline a fleet receiving corps. If there’s a chance at an interception,
the Dawgs have to make the play. Flip side, Georgia’s pass catchers will have to be at their best and
cash in for the Bulldogs to pull it off Between the Hedges Saturday afternoon.
3
LET’S GET PHYSICAL - For all of the talent on the perimeter and at the skill positions for
both of these teams, this is still the Southeastern Conference and it starts up front. Georgia
MUST MUST MUST be the more physical team and win what promises to be a fierce battle at
the line of scrimmage. After falling behind in Knoxville a year ago, Georgia steadily came back, took
and then extended the lead in a 41-17 victory over the Vols. Tennessee is much more equipped this
season. And on offense, Hooker doesn’t need much time or space to make the big play.
4
RED ZONE END ZONE - It will be hard for any team to beat Tennessee by relying
too heavily on field goals. The Volunteers offense is just too explosive. As a caveat,
of course if things bog down, it’s essential to get the three. But... it will take a high
touchdown success rate in the red zone to topple Tennessee. In a game that figures to be
extremely tight and tough, that one play, particularly in close, that can turn a touchdown into
a field goal attempt can make the difference. So can that play-maker make that play on third
down with the chips down.
SANFORD SUPREMACY - Bulldogs Head Coach Kirby Smart is asking for
difference-making early, loud and all 60 - at least - minutes for this monster match-up.
5Bulldog players and fans love to feed off one another. Can the Dooley Field at Sanford
Stadium make the noise that leads to a false start? Third and two becomes third and seven.
Thinking back to Arkansas on the national championship run of 2021 and the victory over
Notre Dame in 2019 in particular in recent history, the Bulldog faithful have had a hand in
some memorable triumphs.
DAWG BONES OFFENSE: TENNESSEE
Both Tennessee and Georgia run high powered, high scoring offenses,
but Tennessee has the edge here by just a little bit. The Volunteers have
the highest scoring offense in the country, led by a Heisman candidate
quarterback in Hendon Hooker. As a team they’ve scored an average
of 50 points per game and it’s heavily attributed to their passing game.
Hooker so far this season has thrown for 2,338 yards and 21 touchdowns
with only one interception on the season.
DAWG BONES DEFENSE: GEORGIA
Before the Florida game Georgia was ranked as the second best scoring
defense in the nation, but that’s not even the best part. The Bulldogs
are also a top-5 team in the country when it comes to passing defense
too. It’ll be crucial when they face off against the ticking time bomb that
it Hendon Hooker’s arm. Regardless of statistics though, the Georgia
defense can do it all as long as everyone does their job, and that’s what
they’ll have to do if they want to stand a chance against the Volunteer’s
prolific offense.
DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS: GEORGIA
You just can’t beat Jack Podlesny’s consistency, and there’s no reason
it should drop off whilst at home. In 2022 overall Podlesny or “Pod” is
kicking at a 87.5% success rate as opposed to the Volunteer’s Chase
McGrath’s 76.9%. Pod also hasn’t missed a single extra point either.
Tennessee cannot say the same.
DAWG BONES COACHING: TIED
Tennessee has been waiting for a moment like this, and they’ve only
been able to capitalize on that opportunity under Josh Heupel, so he’s
earned his credit. He’s an offensive-minded coach and his team is known
for its offense similarly to Kirby Smart’s defensive background and his
team’s defensive reputation. Tennessee beating Bama wasn’t a flash in
the pan. It was the result of discipline, resiliency, and composure, all
things that are preached by Smart too. Bottom line is that both of these
coaching staffs are both some of the best in the country, and they’ll
come into Saturday’s match-up on a fairly even playing field.
DAWG BONES OVERALL: GEORGIA
This call has a lot to do with the location of the game, because if this
were a neutral-site or away game at Neyland Stadium, it would look
different. But because this is a home game for Kirby Smart and the
Georgia Bulldogs who are 14-7 against top-10 opponents, expect things
to lean Georgia’s way. The Bulldawg faithful have been waiting for a
matchup like this all-season. They’ve been waiting to tangle with a big
opponent. That’ll be the X-Factor that the Dawgs will have over the
Vols. During the run that Tennessee has had this season, they had the
chance to play in an environment like the one Sanford will provide come
Saturday. Undisciplined penalties may just be the difference in this one,
and when they’re directed towards Tennessee you can credit the fans.
HEUPEL, HOOKER, THIS
SEASON, TAKE US THROUGH
THESE HIGH TIMES FOR THE
TENNESSEE FAITHFUL?
It has been a heckuva ride. The
first test was at Pittsburgh. It was
the Johnny Majors Classic. Coach
Majors would have loved the game.
The kicking game and plenty of
great defense. Tennessee only
scored three points in the 2nd half
as Pitt forced overtime. Hendon
Hooker teamed up with Cedric
Tillman in overtime to get the win.
It proved Tennessee could beat a
ranked team on the road and the
defense played very well. Then
the big win at home over Florida
holding off the Gators and then
of course Alabama. The Vols have
faced plenty of challenges and have
really been a much improved team
in several positions this season.
THE WIN OVER ALABAMA
IS ARGUABLY THE BIGGEST
SINCE THE UPSET OF
FLORIDA IN 2001, AND
MAYBE THE NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY
OVER FLORIDA STATE, HOW
DOES THAT RATE FOR YOU?
Can’t remember a better game,
setting or quarterback battle.
Hendon Hooker and Bryce Young
kept making play after play.
Alabama’s 17 penalties helped
Tennessee’s cause, but in the end the
Vols made more plays to beat Bama.
BEATING FLORIDA, LSU AND
ALABAMA IN THE SAME
SEASON IS A RARE AND
IMPRESSIVE FEAT, TAKE US
THROUGH THESE WINS AND
THE MOMENTUM TENNESSEE
IS RIDING.
This has been a fun ride for the fans
and the players. Fast paced offense
and a much improved defense.
The roster isn’t drastically different
from last year, the players have just
gotten better and are performing at
a higher level. Bru McCoy obviously
is a big addition at wideout, but Jalin
Hyatt is a player, for example, who
had a hard time getting on the field
last year. Now he holds the school
record and tied an SEC record with
five touchdowns catches in a game
against Alabama, no less. Hyatt is a
perfect example of players on how
this roster has improved.
WHAT DOES TENNESSEE
NEED TO DO TO BEAT
GEORGIA?
Continue to find ways to score. It
looks to be a high scoring game.
This will be the best defense
overall Tennessee has faced. Can
Hendon Hooker continue to find
guys running wide open, but this
time against the stellar Georgia
secondary?
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE
BULLDOGS?
Solid team. The play action pass and
tight ends are tough to cover. This
rebuilt defense is playing better
than most thought it might.
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO
SEE THE SEC AND SCHEDULE
SET UP DIVISIONS/PODS
WHEN OKLAHOMA AND
TEXAS JOIN THE LEAGUE?
I have not given this a whole lot
of thought. I might when we hear
they are finally going to join the
SEC. I would say that once Texas
and Oklahoma do join the league,
it would be nice to play them more
than once a decade. I would also
hate to see many of the old rivalries
dissolved. However, one must
remember that before the split into
divisions, Tennessee and Florida
weren’t rivals. They hardly played
each other between 1933 and 1991.
We will all adjust somehow when
the SEC figures all of this out.
SO MANY CHANGES IN THESE
LAST COUPLE OF YEARS,
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO
SEE CHANGED?
The games are getting way too
long. Too many reviews that are
causing too many delays. I would
like to see them do away with
stopping the clock after every
first down to mark the ball. The
NFL doesn’t do this. They put the
rule years ago to slow the game
down and allow teams to run more
plays. Now most teams with the up
tempo are running 80-100 plays per
game. That’s plenty. It might save
a few minutes and make the game
run faster. Keep the game moving
CINDY ROBINETT
Cheri Leavy’s rapport with her favorite tastemakers and
UGA Alumnae brings you plenty of doggone good inspiration!
Foundation:
NAME: Cindy Robinett
FAMILY: Married to Roddie Robinett, also a
UGA alum. We met in college and were UGA
cheerleading partners. We have three grown
children, Parker, Tyler and Mallory Robinett
as well as three dogs.
HOMETOWN: Savannah, Georgia
CURRENT TOWN: Savannah, Georgia
WHAT YEARS AT UGA: 1985-1989
SCHOOL/DEGREE: Terry College of Business/
Risk Management and Insurance
PROFESSION: As an insurance advisor and
shareholder of a large privately-owned insurance
brokerage and consulting firm, I spend a great deal of my time
listening and learning about my clients’ business and operations.
My goal is always to earn the position of a “trusted advisor” which
then allows me to work more strategically in setting goals around
risk mitigation and risk finance as opposed to focusing on an
insurance transaction or renewal cycle. Because there are always
new or emerging risks to identify and address, my job never gets
boring, and no two days are ever alike.
Accolades:
Named as an “Elite Women in Insurance” by Insurance Business
America magazine (2015) Received an “Award for Writing
2.
Excellence” in 2004 from
the American Society of
Healthcare Risk Managers as a
co-author of a publication that
was featured in the Journal of
Healthcare Risk Management
about Risk Retention Groups.
Inspo:
BOOK: I love historical fiction including
anything written by Kristen Harmel. However, by
favorite book of all time is Where the Crawdads Sing (1) by Delia
Owens because it reminds me of where I grew up.
MAGAZINE: When I was younger it was Runners
World, but now I’m more of a Southern Living fan.
INSTAGRAM: I closely follow GSU Athletics
because my daughter, Mallory is a GSU
cheerleader and I love seeing posts of her and her
teammates. I also follow the United Way of the
Coastal Empire as I am the current chair of their
annual Capital Campaign and so very proud of
how they always showcase community support.
As an alum, I follow the Terry College of Business
BRAND: Corona Light
FASHION DESIGNER: My sister owns a men’s
and ladies clothing boutique in Savannah
called J Parker Limited, so I buy a lot of
my clothes from her store which features
designers such as Bella Dahl, Rails or Tyler Boe.
When I need a power outfit for a business
meeting, I generally go for either a Trina Turk
dress or a Brooks Brothers suit.
INTERIOR DESIGNER: My friend, Susan
Young, is my go-to when I feel the need to
redecorate.
CHEF: I learned to cook from my mom,
Reva Parker, who goes down in history as
the absolute best chef ever. She made me a
cookbook of her own recipes when I left for
UGA and I still use it today. I’ve also created
my own cookbook that I passed down to my
daughter when she left for her first year at
Georgia Southern. Otherwise, if I had to select
someone famous, it would probably be Ree
Drummond/The Pioneer Woman. (3)
BULLDAWGILLUSTRATED
DESCRIBE ATHENS IN FIVE WORDS
OR LESS: Best years of my life!
RESTAURANTS AND BARS: Back in
the day it was The Odyssey, TK Hardy’s,
and Guthrie’s. Today, it’s the Last Resort
and Depalma’s.
SHOPS: ADD Drug and Heery’s
Athens/campus landmark: Sanford
Stadium.
MEMORY WHILE IN SCHOOL:
Cheering in Sanford Stadium for the
first time. There is no way to adequately
describe that feeling.
PROFESSOR/CLASS: Entering my
junior year at UGA, I was still an
undecided business major until I
took Risk Management 101 which
set the course for the rest of my life.
The instructor was named Maurice
and by the end of the first week,
he knew every single one of his
300 students by name. He would
always tell us not to “drink and drive”
and to call him if we needed a ride
home. Sadly, he was killed shortly
thereafter in an auto accident by
a drunk driver. I’ll never forget the
impact he made on my life.
GAMEDAY RITUAL/PLAN: Saturdays
in the fall revolve around UGA (and
GSU) football. In fact, my husband
made me schedule our wedding and
the birth of our children (C-Section)
around the UGA football schedule.
When we are in Athens, we try to
secure our tailgate spot by 7 A.M. and
start celebrating at least six hours
before gametime. We love to meet
old friends, grill Brats, and have a
cocktail or two.
TAILGATE RECIPE: Susan Mason’s
pickled shrimp is my absolute
favorite tailgate food, but we cannot
watch a UGA game without making
pigs-in-a blanket (4). It’s just bad
luck not to have them.
Bulldawg Illustrated continues its series, featuring long-time UGA personalities of the Fourth Estate. There are many who are published authors along with
network television superstars. Our seventh installment spotlights honorary Bulldog Reg Murphy whose dynamic career began in newsrooms but led to
leadership rolls with the National Geographic Society and the United States Golf Association.
Reg Murphy grew up in Gainesville, the chicken capital of the
world, where he became a passionate Georgia football fan. Then
with a point of pride, he adds, “as far back as I can remember.”
He became a distinguished writer, editor and publisher who
lived only 40 miles from the UGA campus, an eight-year-old kid who
enjoyed the good fortune of seeing Frank Sinkwich and Charley Trippi
play Between the Hedges. How was it that he did not study journalism at
the state university which was virtually within arm’s length?
Graduating from high school at age 16, he was eager to enroll in
college, but his mother thought UGA, even in 1949, was too big of a
place for her precocious son and sent him further down the road to
Mercer. Nonetheless, he has always had a high regard for Georgia football
and bought season tickets until he headed west to become publisher of
the San Francisco Examiner.
Even today as he enjoys retirement at his home at Sea Island, he remains
a devoted Bulldog fan who organizes a family texting session on Saturday
afternoons when Georgia plays before network television cameras.
In his pre-teen years, Sanford Stadium was not as big as it is today, but
he remembers it being “very loud.” He remembers the colorful water
boy, Clegg Starks, the team’s bright red jerseys and silver pants. He
remembers the squatters on the railroad tracks at the east end of the
Stadium having to scatter when the train came their way.
When the Bulldogs played on the road, he was often glued to the radio
broadcasts of Ed Thilenius and later those of Larry Munson. There was
always a lot of red in the closet. If anyone deserves to be an “honorary
Dawg,” it is Reg Murphy.
As a college student, he began work with the Macon Telegraph as his
star began rising. He would become editor of the Atlanta Constitution
at a time when Martin Luther King was touching the lives of countless
Americans. “He lit a fire under a lot of people, including me,” Reg says. He
saw the Supreme Court overthrow the county unit system of voting in an
era when Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater carried the
state, which shocked long time soothsayers.
Editors prefer to write headlines not make them, but that is exactly what
Reg did on Feb. 20, 1974, when he was kidnapped at gunpoint by a man
claiming to be a member of a right-wing militia group. The kidnapper
demanded a $700,000 ransom which the AJC agreed to.
An interesting sidebar developed with Jim Minter, a former sportswriter,
who was then the managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution. Minter agreed
to deliver the ransom money wearing a short sleeve shirt. The kidnapper also
stipulated that the deliverer of the money drive an open-air jeep.
As directed, Minter endured bitter cold on that day in freezing
temperatures from downtown Atlanta to Cumming, a distance of more
than 40 miles. The good news is that the kidnapper was caught within six
hours and virtually all the money was recovered.
Years later when the Baltimore Sun was sold to the Times-Mirror
Corporation, Reg became entitled to a multi-million dollar return for his
stock which prompted Minter to write him a note: “Next time you get
kidnapped, don’t call me. Write a check.”
While publisher of the Examiner, he became involved with the
kidnapping of Paddy Hearst, whose father, owned the newspaper. While
with the Baltimore papers, where he was publisher and CEO, he saw head
turning economic development in Maryland’s major market.
After the sale of the Sun, he later became President and CEO of the
National Geographic Society (1996-98) after serving as President of the
United States Golf Association.
Along the way, Reg was an editor who would tackle an unpopular
issue if he thought it was the right thing to do. A very competent
columnist his book on Georgian Griffin Bell, who became Attorney
General in the Carter Administration, has gotten high marks:
“Uncommon Sense,” says his friend Jimmy Bishop, “is one of the best
books I have ever read.”
Today, Reg lives a quiet life at Sea Island with his wife Diana, who also became
President of the U.S. Golf Association and helped make golfing history by
becoming an early female member of the Augusta National Golf Club.
In his younger days, Reg was a competent golfer who often enjoyed
the game in the company of the first George Bush to take up residence
in the White House.
One day George H. W. Bush called Reg and asked him about playing
Caves Valley, a relatively new course in Owings Mill, Maryland. When the
President suggested a certain date, Reg noted that he had to attend a
wedding that day. When Reg told the President that the wedding was at
6:00 p.m., he informed Reg that they would be finished in time for Reg to
get to the wedding. So, the golf game was on.
A few days later, the President called back and said, “Reg you didn’t tell
me it was YOUR wedding.”
When the Presidential helicopter landed at Caves Valley, the President
disembarked with Griffin Bell and golfing legend Arnold Palmer.
After the round, Reg asked his playing partners to sign his wedding
invitation. Arnold Palmer wrote a note to Diana. “Hope Reg plays better
tonight than he did today.”
PROUST
Q&A
BY: CAROLINE CHAMPION
about how many young men went over to Europe and lost their
lives at such a critical time in history, while I was goofing off at
college at that age, trying to figure out which bus to take so I
wouldn’t be late for class.
WHO ARE YOUR HEROES IN REAL LIFE?
Both of my grandfathers - they were great men, great fathers,
great husbands.
QUOTE TO LIVE BY:
Sic Vos Non Vobis.
JOHN CATES
NAME: John Cates
FAMILY: Susie (wife), Sons: Bo (8), Jack (5)
HOMETOWN: Augusta, Georgia
CURRENT TOWN: Augusta, Georgia
WHAT YEARS AT UGA: 2003 - 2012
SCHOOL/DEGREE: BA (2003), MBA from Terry (2011), JD
from UGA Law School (2012).
PROFESSION: President of Meybohm Real Estate.
ACCOLADES: I chair the board of Apparo Academy, Augusta’s
only preschool for children with special needs. Our board and
donor list is full of UGA Alumni and it’s been wonderful to see so
many Dawgs support this amazing school.
WHAT LIFE LESSONS DID YOU LEARN WHILE AT UGA?
To do the duty that lies nearest. There are a lot of distractions in
life and things that demand your attention, but if you focus on
what’s important and the things in front of you, everything else
will take care of itself.
WHAT PROFESSOR DID YOU MOST ADMIRE?
I majored in Philosophy and found myself as a senior not really
knowing what to do with it, but Frank Harrison spent so much time
mentoring and helping me figure out where to go and what to
do next. He passed away a few years ago and the Franklin College
started a scholarship for Philosophy students in his honor.
WHICH HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU MOST
IDENTIFY WITH?
I always loved the “Band of Brothers” series and sometimes think
WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS?
Never losing to Florida again.
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST
ACHIEVEMENT?
Definitely marrying my wife Susie. She and I started dating in
high school and have been together ever since. I don’t think
there’s anything better or greater than marrying your best friend.
Life can be hard, but she makes it fun.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MARKED CHARACTERISTIC?
A good sense of humor.
WHAT DO YOU MOST VALUE IN YOUR FRIENDS?
We have a group of guys who all went to UGA around the same
time and we watch almost all of the games together. Everyone
in that group is kind, loyal, trustworthy and none of us take
ourselves too seriously, which I think makes it fun and makes all
of those guys easy to be around.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT
YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’d love to be able to grow a beard or even just a mustache. I’ve
never been strong in the facial hair department and I think it’s
held me back some in certain areas.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS?
I like Malcolm Gladwell and Michael Lewis’ books because they
talk about interesting things and interesting people. I’ve also
started reading more C.S. Lewis lately and have always enjoyed
books by Thomas Carlyle.
FAVE SOCIAL MEDIA AND WHO TO FOLLOW?
Seth Emerson keeps me up to date on the Dawgs, and there’s an
account on Instagram that rates dogs based on their pictures - I
like that one a lot.
FOOTBALL
FROM THE FIELD
BY GREG POOLE
GEORGIA - 42, FLORIDA - 20
Another win over the Gators is in the books, and a classic battle
between SEC East powers is on tap for next Saturday in Athens.
This kind of game is why all those highly-rated prospects signed
with the Dawgs. Coach Smart invites them to come to UGA to
play for championships. The first championship challenge game
of 2022 will kick off at 3:30 p.m. The nation will be watching.
Georgia fans turned out for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail
Party in their usual numbers (Kirby’s teams consistently seem
to outdraw the Gators in Jacksonville). The Dawgs gave them
what they came to see - another notch in the win column for
the historically dominant Bulldogs, who now lead the series by
eleven games (55-44-2).
Disregarding the score, Kirby and his team were ready for
everything that Florida and first-year Florida coach Billy Napier
had prepared for their upset attempt. Some defensive lapses
allowed Anthony Richardson to move the ball in the third
quarter. Still, Georgia’s 28-3 halftime lead was enough to
have won the game, notwithstanding Florida’s third-quarter
comeback, which was primarily due to Dawg turnovers and
coverage errors.
Turnovers kill! The easiest way to lose a football game is to give
DAIJUN AND
COMPANY BROUGHT
THEIR LUNCH PAILS
VERSUS THE GATORS!
the other team the ball, and ball security has been a problem
for Georgia several times this season. The Dawgs lost the
turnover battle against Kent State (3-1) and Missouri (2-0). The
long (77 yards) touchdown to Xzavier Henderson came just
three plays after a Bennett interception. However, diving into
the statistics can cause one to lose sight of the most crucial
stat in any game, the score. The perfect game is a baseball
event. The only stat that matters in football is the final score,
which brings me back to Tennessee.
The newly powerful Vols will hit Athens as this month’s
favorite of the national media, and their hair-on-fire. UT will
bring nine super-seniors and 16 other seniors who will have
the option to return in 2023. At first glance, those senior
players would indicate an extremely experienced team (and
it is), but many of those seniors are transfers playing for NFL
draft positions. Georgia fans should remember that Tennessee
is a quarterback-driven team - much like Florida. Stop the
quarterback, and the Vols are dead in their tracks. Conversely, if
he is allowed time to find his receivers, it could be a long day.
All of Sanford’s ghosts will be watching this Saturday. Trippi,
Dooley, and all the others will look on with pride as Kirby
Smart leads Georgia on another championship quest.
GEORGIA – 42
FLORIDA - 20
BY: CLAY WATKINS
A look back at what decided the game
between Georgia and Florida.
2.9
The Bulldogs held the Gators to just 2.9
yards per carry. The Gators entered the
Georgia game leading the nation in yards
per carry with a 6.36 average. In Jacksonville,
42-20
Florida was held to 100 yards rushing on 34
carries. Georgia bullied Florida along the
line of scrimmage and having Jalen Carter
back certainly aided that effort. Florida has
talented backs in Montrell Johnson and
Trevor Etienne, along with a mammoth
running quarterback who is difficult to bring
down. If Georgia can hold Tennessee to a
similar yards-per-carry average, the Dawgs
will have an excellent shot at prevailing in its
epic showdown this weekend.
154
Brock Bowers powered Georgia’s passing
game with a career-high 154 yards on five
catches. The highlight was a spectacular
juggling catch in route to a 72-yard
touchdown. “That guy, he’s one of the best
players in the country now and probably
one of the best in how many years, right?”
Florida coach Billy Napier said. “He’s a unique
match-up player, and they do a good job,
you know they got some other good ones
out there too, it’s not like you can just worry
154
Georgia gave up its most explosive play of
the year when Florida’s Xzavier Henderson
caught a go route down the sidelines for a
78-yard touchdown. Safety Malaki Starks –
who will likely be recognized as a Freshman
All-American -- uncharacteristically bit on
about him.” Darnell Washington also had the underneath route, allowing Henderson
a big day, hauling in three catches for 47. to get behind the defense and cruise for
Washington had a few uncharacteristic a long touchdown. This stat is potentially
drops, but whenever he has the ball in his concerning given the high-flying passing
hands, good things usually happen. Georgia attack Tennessee brings to Athens this
will look for similar production from Bowers weekend. The Vols will be looking to get
and Washington against a Tennessee team behind Georgia’s safeties, which cannot
that has been vulnerable against the pass. happen if the Dawgs are going to better the
Vols and move toward another division title.
555
Georgia compiled a series-record 555 yards
of offense against a Florida defense that
has been less than stellar despite having
some NFL talent on that side of the ball.
What is more
2.9
remarkable about this recordsetting
offensive explosion is that Georgia
accomplished it despite turning the ball
over three times. Both Kenny McIntosh
and Stetson Bennett responded with
stellar play after their respective turnovers,
with McIntosh setting the tone with some
punishing runs helping Georgia pull away
after Florida’s third-quarter run. Georgia’s
offensive output has become so prolific
that its 555 yards of total offensive seemed
somewhat unnoteworthy. Georgia currently
ranks second in the nation with an average
of 527 yards per game. Unfortunately,
Tennessee comes to Athens leading the
country in offensive output with 571 yards
per game and a nation-leading 46 offensive
touchdowns.
against Auburn where Edwards also carried
the ball 12 times, generating 83 yards. Kenny
McIntosh added 90 yards on 16 carries and
Branson Robinson pitched in for another
35 yards. Robinson had a long run called
back after a penalty or Georgia would have
had more than its impressive 239 yards of
rushing on the day.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Brock Bowers -As we venture back into Napa Valley,
California, we know the aging process sometimes can
take years to develop a finished product. Brock Bowers is
certainly the exception to a fine product aging quickly. In his
sophomore year, Bowers has not only taken the Dawg Nation
to a new level of enthusiasm but has brought a national
focus to the Georgia tight end position. Against Florida, Brock
was Brock. An acrobatic catch for a 75 yard touchdown was
just the start of a truly great performance and a big-time
game. Five receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown proves
that Brock and the tight end position will play a key role in
Saturday’s super mega SEC East clash with the Tennessee
Volunteers. If Georgia expects to win you gotta put Brock in -
the endzone
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Javon Bullard - The sophomore from Milledgeville, Georgia stands 5-11,
180-pound and can bring the hammer from the corner on every play. Javon
has dealt with adversity this year and has a renewed focus and it showed
against the Gators. Eight tackles and five solos along with one tackle and a
half for a loss capped off a tremendous physical performance from Javon. His
sure-handed tackling and speed allow him to bring support from the corner
on the run game as well as being a top-notch defender of the pass. Against
the Volunteers, his speed and physicality will play a key role against an elite
receiving core that loves to go vertical and loves to go big. Javon is a hidden
gem in a big name secondary with his name moving up each week.
SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER
NOT SO SPECIAL - As Georgia prepares for their biggest game of the year it
is time for a snobby ex kicker to talk about the “not so special special teams.”
In order for Georgia to make this tremendous run, the special teams are
going to have to perform at a level that they have not reached yet. Here are
three areas I believe improvement is needed this week - in an urgent manner.
1. We must cover better and pursue the returner on KICKOFF COVERAGE
or else we will get hurt. Florida had 48 yards and returns on Georgia
which gives them a definite advantage for a very aggressive starting
point. We must break down and tackle better.
2. KICKOFF RETURN - It was a disaster against Florida. It is OK to take
advantage of a fair catch and start at the 25 yard line. Starting inside your
15 sometimes is almost as good as a turnover. Fix it.
3.We need Payne Walker to get more consistent on his FIELD GOAL SNAPS
and extra point snaps. We need to understand that the holder can crowd
the spot and cause a slower process which will result in a missed field goal
or extra point. More practice is needed by the holder and snapper. We will
need lots of points … always need points.
JD’S TOP 15
— Jeff Dantzler
1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs raced ahead, then
rebounded from a Florida rally to pull away and beat
the Gators 42-20 in Jacksonville. Now the stage is set for
a mega-showdown, as Georgia hosts Tennessee with the winner
grabbing control of the SEC East.
2. TENNESSEE - College football’s most explosive
offense was on point and the defense was dominant in a
44-6 crushing of Kentucky. The Volunteers are having
an amazing season, seeking now to add Georgia to a hit list that
includes Florida, LSU and Alabama.
3. OHIO STATE - Things got a little scary for the
Buckeyes against Penn State in Happy Valley. But Ohio
State with its big play offense pulled out a 44-31 victory
over the Nittany Lions. Ohio State heads to Evanston Saturday for a
nooner against Northwestern.
4. CLEMSON - The Tigers were off this past Saturday
following a pulse-pounding 27-21 win over Syracuse.
Clemson is a perfect 8-0 and headed for Notre Dame. The
Tigers talented defensive line can set the tone. Clemson’s run game
was strong versus the Orange.
5. MICHIGAN - Jim Harbaugh’s team was able to
separate in the second half for a 29-7 win over arch-rival
Michigan State to make it 8-0. The Wolverines have a
strong running game and the defense has been strong the last two
weeks. It’s at Rutgers Saturday.
6. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide were off this past
week, as was LSU, preparing for the huge battle against
the Fightin’ Tigers in Baton Rouge. Nick Saban’s team
has everything in front of it. A win over LSU would be a huge step
towards Atlanta.
7. TCU - The Horned Frogs survived an upset scare
against West Virginia in Morgantown, where it’s tough
to play. A 41-31 victory improves TCU to 8-0. It’s an old
in-state Southwest Conference battle in Cowtown this
week, as the Frogs host Texas Tech.
8. OREGON - The Ducks are 7-1, winners of seven
straight since falling to Georgia in the season-opener.
Oregon took care of Cal in Berkeley 42-24 to stay
FOOTBALL
MORE SPORTS
We head into the first week of November with some enormous games
on the docket. At the top of the list are a pair of Southeastern Conference
showdowns. Georgia hosts Tennessee and Alabama takes on LSU in Baton
Rouge. There’s a great race in the PAC-12, where, ala the Big XII, the two top
records square off in the conference title game.
alone atop the PAC-12 North. Oregon ventures to struggling
Colorado Saturday.
9. SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans beat Arizona
45-37 in a nice bounce back after a tough loss to Utah
and then the open date. Next up is Cal in the Coliseum.
There are four excellent teams in the PAC-12 and the Trojans are
right in the thick of it.
10. OLE MISS - Lane Kiffin was all smiles following a
31-28 win over Texas A&M in College Station, which
pushed the Rebels record to 8-1. This is Ole Miss’s best
start since going 10-0 in 1962. The Rebels are off this
week and then host the Crimson Tide.
11. UCLA - The Bruins are 7-1 after a 38-13 win over
Stanford this past Saturday night. UCLA has some juice
offensively, led by QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Now
it’s off to Arizona State, which is having a tough season,
including an in-season coaching change.
12. LSU - Like the Crimson Tide, LSU was off this
past Saturday to get ready for the showdown at Tiger
Stadium. The Bayou Bengals have found their sea legs
offensively and Brian Kelly knows it will take a lot of
points to knock off Alabama.
13. UTAH - Kyle Whittingham once again has one of
the best teams in the PAC-12. The Utes pulled off a 21-
17 win at Washington State on Thursday night. That’s
now a couple of extra days to get ready for Arizona in
Salt Lake City.
14. ILLINOIS - The Fighting Illini are a robust 7-1 after
a
26-9 win over Nebraska and head into November at the
top of the Big Ten West. Now Michigan State heads to
Champagne. The Spartans are struggling. Bret Bielema
has the Illinois faithful excited.
15. KANSAS STATE - What in the world
happened to the then-ninth ranked Cowboys, as
Kansas State pounded Oklahoma State 48-0? It was a
great bounceback from the loss at TCU. The Wildcats
host Texas Saturday, squarely in the thick of the Big XII race.
