New boiler? No problem!
INDEPENDENT plumbing and heating specialists 1st Call Gas have
been extremely busy over the past year.
Not only have they moved premises from Crookes to a spacious
base at Westbrook Court, Sharrowvale Road, but business has
doubled.
As we embark on the coldest period of the year, the team, led by
David Turner and Leon Stones, are out and about making sure
homes are kept cosy and residents comfortable.
A retired gentleman from Woodseats is among recent clients to
have benefitted from the combined 40 years’ experience of staff.
After his old boiler was condemned, the customer contacted 1st
Call who came out to fit a new Ideal boiler.
It was also recommended that a single pipework system in the
property, which dates back to 1922, be replaced to boost the
heating system
The client said: “It was suggested that a dual pipe system would
perhaps improve the situation as it never got warm in the house,
and it does seems to be the case.”
New radiators were also installed with the work completed in
stages.
1st Call Gas offers a full range of domestic plumbing and heating
services, with a reputation for
prompt and reliable service.
Many clients have repeatedly
engaged the services of the
business since it was set up in
2004, some moving house as many
as three times and having three
new boilers fitted.
The company also handles
commercial work with the recent
expansion enabling tendering for
bigger contracts.
EYE
Dronfield Town
Mayor, Coun Lilian
Deighton, presents
her monthly update
for Dronfield Eye
T
HE Queen’s sad death, in
September, came as a
complete shock which has
overshadowed time since my
last column.
I was five when Her Majesty was
crowned and remember her
Coronation.
She had looked so well only days
before she passed away, so I found it hard to comprehend. Like
many other people, I felt the Queen was so special.
While many events were cancelled during the national period of
mourning, the visit to Dronfield by a delegation from our German
twin town of Sindelfingen had to go ahead as it was planned for
the weekend after the Queen died.
I was involved in various meals and events, including the official
reception which was moved to Coal Aston Village Hall, from the
Civic Hall, due to the Book of Condolence being opened there.
I spent some time talking with the Mayor of Sindelfingen, Bernd
Vohringer, whom I have met before.
The German visitors were so respectful and one told me that
Queen Elizabeth II was their Queen too.
I was called upon as Mayor for formalities following the Queen’s
death, including introducing the Proclamation of the new
Sovereign, King Charles III, and reading from The Book of
Revelation at the commemorative service at Dronfield Parish
Church. It is such a beautiful piece and I found it very moving.
The moment I found most difficult was singing the National
Anthem for the first time with ‘God Save the King’ in place of
‘God Save the Queen’.
A bright spot during a sad period was my visit to St Andrew’s
Church of England Methodist Primary School, to present books
of welcome to children in the reception class, which was lovely.
Finally, I attended the Civic Service in Dronfield, an annual
service when locally-elected members and members of the
church come together to celebrate the town. A special thanks
to Pauline and Pam for baking the cakes which were enjoyed at
the service.
I know that face!
W
HEN Cliff and Soula Philippou decided it was time to invest in
a new en-suite bathroom, they found a familiar face to help
them along the way.
The couple have lived in the same detached house at Dronfield
Woodhouse for 44 years and during that time they have made major
changes with extensions and the addition of a lovely conservatory.
Their en-suite bathroom had served them well for around 30 years
but was now in need of replacing.
With a corner bathtub and old-style shower, Cliff and Soula
decided it had seen better days.
So when they visited the Woodseats showroom of H2O Bathrooms,
imagine how surprised - and delighted - they were to spot the man
who, working for another company at the time, had installed their
previous bathroom all those years ago: Phil Proctor.
Said Cliff: “I remembered him and he remembered me. I recalled
he was excellent at his job.
“We welcomed his inspiration. He put some ideas together, we put
some ideas together and
between us we were happy to
have a completely new look
for the room.”
Now with a curved shower
and a relaxing hydromassage
bathtub, the couple’s exciting
new en-suite also features an
upright radiator and towel
warmer, and a floor-to-ceiling
feature tile panel linking the
wash basin and mirrored,
illuminated cupboard.
Thrilled with the finished job,
Cliff and Soula said the H2O
Bathrooms team were very
professional: “Ten out of ten”.
“The fitters were excellent;
very polite and professional
and careful to take all the
mess away with them,” said
Cliff.
Open from Monday to Saturday with out of
hours and Sunday appointments available
by request.
Bench dedication
T
HE pioneer of Dronfield’s Lea Brook Valley Project
has been remembered with the dedication of a
wooden bench in his honour.
Rev Tony Marron first suggested the idea of the environmental
scheme in 2004 and, recruiting other volunteers, the Project was
launched in 2005. Since then, and working with other partners,
the organisation has transformed the valley from a run-down,
neglected part of town into a place now enjoyed by residents and
nature.
Rev Marron passed away two years ago. His long-time project
EMEMBRANCE Day this year falls
on Sunday, November 13th - and
it will be an extra special occasion in
Dronfield.
This year marks the centenary of the town’s
War Memorial. Funded by public subscription
following World War I, it was unveiled on
October 29th, 2022.
Originally sited on the triangle of land
outside the White Swan pub at the bottom of
Hallowes Lane, it was designed by Joseph
Syddall from Whittington and made by local
stonemason George Platts.
It depicts the figure of a soldier at ease with
his right leg resting against a tree stump and
his hands on the muxxle of an upturned rifle.
He stands on top of a square plinth and an
octagonal three-stepped base.
As traffic increased on the old A61 road
through the town, the decision was made to
8
colleague,
Norman
Crowson, paid a
personal tribute
to him and Rev
Dave Walker,
who is current chair of the Lea Brook Valley Project, led prayers
at a short ceremony to dedicate the bench.
The event was attended by Rev Marron’s widow, Annick, and
her daughter, Sophie.
Town’s War Memorial centenary
R
relocate the memorial to a new site, outside
the town’s library. So in 1973 the stone soldier
was wrapped up and transported to his new
home.
Arrangements for this year’s Remembrance
Day Parade are as follows:
10.35am, Parade to move off from School
Lane.
10.55am, Hymn and Last Post at War
Memorial.
11am, Two minutes silence.
11.02am, Act of Homage / Naming of war dead
/ Laying of wreaths / Prayers and hymn /
National Anthem.
11.15am, Parade re-assembles.
There will be a service in the Parish Church
following the parade.
Other Remembrance Day services are held
in the Dronfield Eye area, including at Coal
Aston.

Riders raise
awareness
H
ORSE riders and walkers followed a four-mile
route to raise awareness of how to pass horses
safely on the roads.
The Dronfield Pass Wide and Slow Ride saw the group,
escorted by local police, make their way around Dronfield
Woodhouse and Holmesfield.
Organisers say riding on the roads is becoming increasingly
dangerous because of the “ignorance and lack of consideration
of many drivers”.
They point to an incident in Holmesfield last year which left a
horse so badly injured he had to be euthanased, and his young
rider traumatised.
The group’s Terri Amber said: “Our ride took us past the place
where that incident occurred.
“We were riding for ourselves, for the riders of the future and
for all the horses, riders, carriage drivers who have lost their lives
or been injured or traumatised on British roads.”
A network of horse riders around the country ride each year as
part of the Pass Wide and Slow campaign. The new Highway
Code states that motorists should leave at least 2m between
vehicle and horse and pass at a maximum speed of 10mph.
A public meeting, with Lee Rowley, MP for NE Derbyshire, will
be held at Coal Aston Methodist Church, Eckington Road, on
Friday, 2nd December, at 7.30pm. It follows on from a similar
meeting last year.
Terri said: “Other MPs and local councillors are invited, along
with the local police and Derbyshire police commissioner,
Angelique Foster.
“We will be discussing road safety and off-road access for
horse riders and other vulnerable road users, looking at the
progress made in the last year and what improvements we would
like to see in the coming year.
“We want to see proactivity and creativity from our local
authorities, police and government.”
• The Pooh Corner Home for Rescued Horses and Ponies will be
Sew4others has a membership of around 40 and over the
years they have made quilts, blankets, cardigans, hats and many
other items. Goods have been donated to Baby Basics and
neonatal units in Sheffield and Chesterfield, The Besom charity,
the foster care agency, and local women’s refuges.
Co-ordinator, Jane Hodgkinson, said: “We meet in St Andrew’s
Cosmo started out as a young
athlete as a successful multi-eventer,
running, jumping and throwing,
which gave him an excellent
foundation. Like all young athletes,
he was affected by a lack of
organised training during the coronavirus pandemic, but
persevered, training in parks, running hill reps around Dronfield
and continuing his strengthening and conditioning work at home.
He has now specialised in running 400m hurdles. He had his
first attempts at this event in June 2021 and has progressed
impressively since then.
During the 2022 season Cosmo became U17 Derbyshire Men’s
champion, Derbyshire Schools champion and won bronze at the
Mason Trophy Schools (Inter-Counties across the Midlands and
North West) competition.
He qualified for the National English Schools Competition in
Manchester in July and represented Derbyshire Schools at this
prestigious event. He enjoyed his experience and performed
well, progressing to the final of his event, eventually finishing 7th.
He also made the final of the England National Championships in
Bedford in August, but crashed out with a spectacular fall at the
ninth hurdle in the final.
As a result of his performance at English Schools, Cosmo was
selected to represent England at the UK School Games in
September in Loughborough, where the best eight athletes in
each event met to compete against each other.
The School Games are an Olympic-style multi-sport event and
Cosmo loved staying in the athletes’ village and spending time
with other elite athletes.
In a fantastic finish to his season, he came fifth in the School
Games final with a new personal best. He improved his personal
best by three seconds over the season and his time of 56.26sec
over 400m hurdles means he is ranked eighth in the UK for the
U17 men.
Cosmo has achieved all this with impressive focus and
determination. He overcame a foot injury which left him on
crutches last November-December and meant he had little winter
training.
He is being coached in Sheffield by Lewis Samuel, who, along
with his training group of athletes, have been a massive
inspiration. Over that last year Cosmo was also supported by the
Derbyshire Institute of Sport. This included help from a
physiotherapist, a strength and conditioning coach and included
online sessions around nutrition and mental preparation.
Meanwhile, after sitting his GCSEs, he has remained at
Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School to complete his A Levels
there.
Future
proofed
THE team at A61 Bathrooms
have completely transformed
the bathroom at a terraced
property in Woodseats.
The householders wanted to
future-proof their single
bathroom by having the bath
replaced by a walk-in shower.
There had not been a
complete update of the space
for some 30 years and a vast
improvement was achieved thanks to a reconfiguration
of the layout by business owner,
Craig Leighton.
The client takes up the story: “We like to use
local businesses where we can. We’d seen
some of the other projects that A61 Bathrooms
have done in Active8 magazine and we know
they have been there a while, so we called in at
the premises on Chesterfield Road. We spoke to
Craig, who was really friendly and then came
out to talk about our ideas.
“Having the bathroom done was long overdue
but Craig has given us everything we asked for
by changing things around a bit.”
The A61 fitter, Dave, also came in for
particular praise, overseeing all of the
installation work from full strip-out to
completion with eight full days.
“Dave came in and just got on with the job – he
was brilliant,” commented the client.
A complete refit of the room was delivered by
A61 Bathrooms, including electrical work and
new flooring. All of the old fixtures and fittings
were removed in a timely manner. A couple of
minor issues arose as work progressed but
were quickly rectified.
The ceiling has been lowered and fitted with
downlighting and new waterproof panelling
throughout has eliminated the any need for
grouting, ensuring the new bathroom stays like
new.
Dronfield’s Book of Condolence
Deborah Wain reports on the week when
the Dronfield area paid tribute to the life
of Queen Elizabeth II and welcomed her
successor, King Charles III
T
HE Dronfield community came together in mourning the
passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Floral tributes were laid in the Manor Gardens, outside the library,
while hundreds of people added messages to a book of condolence at
the Civic Hall.
Meanwhile the accession of a new sovereign was marked by the local
Proclamation of King Charles III, held in the Manor Gardens.
The Union flag at the Peel Centre flew at half-mast during the national
period of mourning, apart from during the Proclamation.
In a statement following the announcement of the Queen’s death, the
councillors, clerk and officers of Dronfield Town Council said they were
“deeply saddened” by the news and that “our thoughts are with the
Royal family at this difficult time.”
A commemorative service of remembrance for the Queen was held by
the Town Council in partnership with Dronfield Parish Church on the
morning of Sunday, 18th September.
That evening, around 150 people gathered at the Manor Gardens to
pay their respects with a National Moment of Reflection. The service
was led by Rev Ian Webb, and Dronfield Parish Chorale sang the
Russian Orthodox Kontakian for the Departed, conducted by Rob
Aldread, director of music at the church. The piece of music was also
sung at the Queen’s funeral service at Windsor Castle and for Prince
Philip’s funeral.
Rob was joined in the local singing by Becky Hampshire, Tamsy
Jardine, Ellie Baker, Mary Kellary-Hallett and Mark Rothman.
Deputy Mayor, Coun Susan Burkitt, read ‘Floral Tribute’, a poem
written by Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, as a tribute to the Queen.
The Last Post was played, followed by a minute's silence to reflect on
Her late Majesty’s life. Prayers then completed the event.
Meanwhile, the Town Council organised the reading of the
Proclamation of King Charles III in the Manor Gardens on 11th
September. The ceremony was led by Mayor, Coun Lilian Deighton,
who introduced the event before the Proclamation was read out by the
Sheffield Concert Band played the National Anthem and the event
finished with three cheers for the King.
Tributes were paid to the Queen across Derbyshire.
In a statement, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire said: “We wish to
express our very great sadness at the death of Her Majesty the Queen,
and pay tribute to her extraordinary service to the UK and the
Commonwealth.”
On the day of the funeral, they stated “We will always be grateful for
her years of loyal service to the United Kingdom and the
Commonwealth. Her remarkable legacy reaches around the world, and
will be felt for generations to come.”
The Duke and Duchess also referred to the “honour” of receiving the
Queen at Chatsworth on several occasions, her last official visit being in
2014, for a ‘Celebration of Derbyshire’, including a showcase of local
produce.
Church bells were muffled or were single bell tolls as they rang out in
towns and villages in Derbyshire between the announcement of the
Queen’s death and her state funeral. The exception was for the
proclamation of King Charles III when bells rang out in celebration.
In all, hundreds of bell ringers of all ages rang in over 67 different
places in Derbyshire, completing over 176 special pieces of bell ringing
to remember the late Queen or celebrate the new King.
Some single bells were tolled exactly 96 times, one for each year of
the Queen's life.
Sindelfingen Park funding bid
T
HE October Town Council meeting saw councillors
agree to apply for funding to refurbish Sindelfingen
Park.
Central government created the UK Shared Prosperity Fund
(UKSPF) to deliver the levelling up agenda, allocating £2.6 billion
across the UK up to the end of the 2024-25 financial year.
The funds are to be allocated locally by a new partnership
working between local and national government - in our case
North East Derbyshire District Council.
Coun Alex Dale explained: “This is an excellent opportunity to
take part in the government's levelling up agenda.
“The first investment priority of the UKSPF is to strengthen
our social fabric and foster a sense of local pride and
belonging through investment in activities that enhance
physical, cultural and social ties and amenities, such as
community infrastructure and local green space."
Should the application be successful, a tendering process will
take place to choose a preferred supplier. The project will be
part-funded by Dronfield Town Council.
Coun Kevin Tait, Chair of the Parks Committee, said: "We have
worked hard to put a winning bid together. If successful, this
will transform one of our finest green spaces into something
really special."
The decision is due towards the end of the year.
Kath Steele
of Coal Aston
D
RONFIELD Eye is
saddened to report the
death of Kath Steele,
familiar to thousands of
Dronfield people as one of
the town’s schools crossing
patrol officers.
Kath was born on 15th April,
1952, at Old Park Road,
Beauchief, Sheffield, to parents
Fred and Doris Holmes. She was
the youngest of three children
and attended school at Greenhill
Infants and then Jordanthorpe,
before studying to be a librarian
at Loughborough Polytechnic.
After qualifying, she worked as
a librarian at Sheffield
Polytechnic for a time. She then
took a job at Hartley Seed bookshop in Sheffield, where she
was to meet her future husband, David.
The couple were married at Dronfield Parish Church on 26th
October, 1974, and they lived at Marsh Avenue before later
moving to Wilson Road, Coal Aston. Daughter Rachel was
born in 1980, son Chris in 1982. The family enjoyed many
happy times growing up, including family holidays in
Scarborough and Paignton.
Kath and David were both active in the Labour Party. Kathy
stood for local councils several times, but was not elected.
She was a school governor at Holmesdale Infants and
Northfield Juniors for many years and also a volunteer at the
schools, helping out with things like baking and school trips.
In 1992, Kath began working on the School Crossing Patrol
on Eckington Road, Coal Aston. She was there for ten years,
before moving to work on Stonelow Road. She had been due
to receive an award this year, as she had been doing the job
for 30 years in total. Kath loved the job and the children she
helped, and would have carried on doing it forever if she
could, said her family.
She also worked part-time as a cleaner for Dronfield Town
Council at the football changing rooms and cricket pavilions
at Coal Aston and Stonelow. Kath retired from this job in
2012.
A member of Coal Aston Methodist Church, she always
supported fundraising events such as coffee mornings run by
all the local churches and other organisations.
Supa
Impressed!
SUPAFIT client Antonia Hall, from
Dronfield, is happy with her madeto-measure
bedroom furniture in
every way.
The family business delivered
something different with real impact to
work with the aesthetic of the
property, which Antonia describes as
having a steam punk industrial
influence.
And through clever design, Supafit’s
Jenna has managed to create more storage for Antonia and her
partner without compromising on floorspace in the bedroom.
Antonia explained: “We were browsing lots of different styles for
wardrobes in the room, which is the main bedroom and a long
room.
“We were looking at quite dramatic colour initially but then
decided on the grey as we thought it would have more longevity,
which was one of our aims with having furniture made to
measure.”
The products eventually chosen were a Supaline frontage in
Anthracite Metal Rock with a contrast surround in Onyx Matt. The
handles were a textured knurled t- bar in black, again matt.
There were lots of pleasant surprises for Antonia as the project
progressed – including just how much depth the wardrobes would
have, ruling out the need for any additional furniture.
Antonia said: “We have a mix of short and long hanging space
and some drawers, so plenty of storage, yet it feels as though no
space has been lost in the room itself.”
Antonia was also amazed at how quickly the work was
completed.
She said: “It was one fitter and everything was done in a day. I
was super impressed.”
Telephone befriending for elderly
A
FRIENDLY voice can make all the difference if you
feel lonely or isolated, so meet local charity
BrightLife which provides a telephone befriending
service for older people.
BrightLife might be a name which readers haven’t heard before,
but it is the day-to-day name adopted in 2021 by Age Concern
Chesterfield and District.
Based in Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, BrightLife provides a
telephone befriending service to people over the
age of 55 living in Chesterfield, Bolsover and NE
Derbyshire. The service is provided by a dedicated
team of volunteer Befrienders from Monday to
Friday.
The history of BrightLife goes right back to the
Second World War which prompted the setting up of
an Old Peoples Welfare Committee by the Council of
Social Service in 1940. The committee aimed to
improve the situation for older people and gained
national recognition.
In 1944, it became known as the National Old People’s Welfare
Committee, incorporating a range of organisations working at a
local level, to improve older people's lives.
In 1946, Chesterfield Borough Council was the first authority in
Derbyshire to establish an Old People’s Welfare Committee in the
town.
In 1971, the National Older People’s Welfare Committee adopted
the name of Age Concern and in 1992 there was another key step
in the journey when North Derbyshire Health Authority funded a
part-time officer located in and managed by Age Concern
Chesterfield to introduce an Advocacy Service aimed at
preventing loneliness.
MUM-of-two from Dronfield completed one
of the country’s most famous runs in aid of a
local charity.
Esther Edwards finished the 13 miles route of the Great
North Run, from Newcastle to South Shields, and raised
£1,000 for Fairplay.
Fairplay supports children and young people with
disabilities and additional needs, and their families, across
NE Derbyshire.
Esther’s elder son, 21-year-old Benjamin, who has autism
and severe learning difficulties, attends Fairplay’s base in
Chesterfield two days a week and enjoys other activities
organised by the charity.
Esther, who completed the run in two and a half hours,
said “ This year I celebrated my 50th birthday and
Fairplay are marking their 30th year with a range of
fundraising events so, when I got a place in the Great
North run, I had to be brave and run for this amazing
charity.
“It’s a big deal for me as whilst I love running with my
friends I’ve never done such a big event before, but
young people at Fairplay face much harder challenges
and difficulties every day, and they are supported by
the most dedicated, hard working and fun-loving
staff.”
Ann Monk, BrightLife’s chief officer, explained that the pandemic
revealed many of the issues that lonely and isolated people have
had in the past are still a problem for older people today.
She said: “Loneliness and isolation occurs for many reasons; but
one that has been highlighted during the pandemic is that many
people do not live near their families. More families have both
adults working.
“The days have gone where families lived in the same area and
supported each other. Many families live and work away from the
area their older relatives live in.
“A member of a couple may have lost their
partner or someone they provided care for and find
it difficult to mix with others now they are on their
own. Many carers become lonely if they have
cared for someone for a long time because they
have lost contact with their friends and community.
“An older person may have been housebound or
have mobility problems and cannot get out of
their home and they too become forgotten if
they do not have family or friends who can help and encourage
them.”
One man who lives alone and has benefitted from the
befriending service said: “It is lovely to hear your voice on the
phone as the only other voice I hear is on the television.
“Sometimes I feel as if I am invisible.”
BrightLife is always looking for more volunteers and would love to
hear from anyone interested.
All volunteers receive training and are fully supported by staff.
Anyone who would like to volunteer or would like a call from a
befriender, contact Ann on 01246 273333 or email
Local firm backs four charities
D
RONFIELD-based independent
financial planners, Belmayne, have
handed over £16,000 to four small local
charities – the result of just nine months’
fundraising.
The total amount donated is being split equally
between the organisations the firm chose as its
charities of the year, giving each one £4,000 to
spend on the valuable services they provide.
Benefiting from Belmayne’s endeavours are
Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team, Disability
Awareness with Sport, Sheffield Association for
Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and Sight
Support Derbyshire.
More than £12,000 was raised at Belmayne’s
charity ball, held in May, which was attended by
around 150 people. The event included a raffle
and live auction of prizes kindly donated by
friends and colleagues of the firm.
The top selling items were tickets to see England play New
Zealand at Twickenham, which sold for £800, and a signed
Sheffield United shirt that raised £450.
Partner, Ben Smalley, also completed the 112-mile Tour of the
Peaks with three friends on behalf of the Belmayne Foundation,
raising more than £1,000.
He said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of
family, friends, clients and colleagues who have supported our
fundraising efforts this year and enabled us to donate such a
substantial sum to our annual charities. Each has a very different
remit, but all of them will put the money to excellent use.”
Belmayne’s four partners (centre) with representatives from
Disability Awareness with Sport, Sight Support Derbyshire and
Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus
The Belmayne Foundation was set up by the firm’s four
partners in 2019 to aid small local charities who support health
and wellbeing and provide relief for those in need.
Organisations wanting to be considered for future support
should contact Ben Smalley by email: ben.smalley@belmayneifa.com
Abigail Beaney, fundraiser at Sight Support Derbyshire, added:
“In terms of corporate partners, Belmayne definitely deserves a
gold medal – we never expected to receive so much money!
“The ball was great fun and the team has been great to work
with. All in all, it has been a brilliant experience.”
Valley reveals its past life
dronfield EYE
Months of dry weather have caused water
shortages throughout the UK. Rivers and
streams have dried to a trickle and water in
some lakes and ponds has disappeared altogether
N
OWHERE is the drought more evident than at the
reservoirs just over the hills in the Derwent Valley.
When they were built between 1935 and 1943, the picturesque villages of
Ashopton and Derwent were sacrificed. Once they were submerged,
everyone thought they had gone forever.
However, in subsequent years of low rainfall, some of the ruins of the old
buildings have been seen. This happened in the dry summers of 1976, 1995
and 2018 and now again in 2022.
Local photographer Claire Davison ranks the area around Derwent,
Ladybower and Howden Dams as one of her favourite places in Derbyshire.
Some of her most spectacular images have shown water cascading over
the downfall at Derwent Dam.
This year, however, she has made several trips here to record the falling
water levels and photograph some of the relics and foundations which
have emerged. On these pages she shares some of her
favourite images.
People travelling to the Derwent Valley to view and
photograph the relics from the lost villages have been advised
to stick to regular roadways and footpaths as exploring out
into the mud on foot can be dangerous. One man had to be
rescued after he became stuck for several hours while
inspecting the ruins.
• Severn Trent applied for a drought permit in October for its
three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley, following what it
says has been the driest six months since 1850.
A
S part of his ‘mini budget’, the Chancellor
raised the threshold of how much a property
has to cost before stamp duty is paid to £250,000.
First-time buyers will also be exempt from stamp duty
when purchasing properties worth up to £425,000, an
increase from the previous £300,000 limit.
The property market has remained buoyant over recent
months, and the reduction in stamp duty announced by the
Government could help to offset some of the headwinds
the economy is facing in the coming months and avoid any
slowdown in the property market.
Higher interest rates are already having an impact on
mortgage costs, with fixed rates exceeding 6% for the first
time in over 12 years.
With the broader cost of living crisis affecting spending
power, the reduction in stamp duty will be welcome news to
many buyers and will help to reduce the cost of moving
home, keeping people and the property market moving over
the coming months.
Stamp duty can be a barrier to property transactions and
people moving house, so these measures may encourage
more people to move, especially when one of the biggest
problems at the moment is the lack of property on the
market.
The previous stamp duty holiday, introduced in July 2020,
saw a significant increase in property transactions.
We have also seen property prices increase significantly
during the incentive period, often offsetting the stamp duty
saving and creating a false property market during the
stamp duty holiday period.
This permanent change is very welcome to reduce the tax
burden of moving home and avoids some of the short-term
problems experienced as a result of previous incentive
schemes.
Blackberries
Blackthorn
Elderberries
Autumn’s rich berry harvest
Animals and birds are gorging
themselves on berries right
now, fattening themselves up
in preparation for winter.
Prof Ian Rotherham explains
W
ITH our long, hot summer and
plenty of sunshine, this year has
undoubtedly been great for fruit and
berries. This is especially those
growing wild in hedgerows, along
woodland edges, and what we used to
call ‘waste ground’.
Common shrubs like brambles or
blackberries have been almost weighed
down with especially heavy fruit hanging on
every branch; a rich harvest for birds like
blackbirds and mammals such as wood mice.
By late summer, many animals and birds
are fattening up for the hardship of winter to
come. Rich pickings of fruit, berries, and nuts
in the countryside and gardens are
absolutely vital.
A number of readers have asked about the
lack of garden birds coming to feeders in
August through to October, but don’t worry,
this is entirely normal. During late summer
and into autumn things are in flux and having
bred, many garden birds gather in small
flocks to roam and forage in the local
countryside.
As nights get colder and the abundant
autumnal harvest has been consumed, at
least in part, the birds will return.
Some species have departed south for the
winter and warmer climates, soon to be
replaced by winter visiting migrants from the
north. The Arctic thrushes (redwings and
fieldfares) will soon be arriving, and finches
such as bramblings, redpolls, and siskins will
also be ranging across woods, park, hedges
and gardens.
The thrushes, including mistle thrush, song
thrush, and blackbirds, love the red berries
of hawthorn and rowan whereas the finches
36
Hawthorn
Rowan
and buntings feed on seeds of trees like
alder, birch and larch.
In the wildlife garden, planning ahead and
planting berry-bearing trees and shrubs
brings dividends of abundant free birdfood
to benefit the birds - and your pocket. What’s
more, some of these plants (honeysuckle for
instance) can be grown freely from cuttings
to provide fragrant blossoms throughout the
summer and then lots of autumn berries.
Other trees and shrubs are easily
propagated from berries, grown on, and then
planted out. St John’s worts (Hypericums) for
instance, can be pulled apart to provide root
cuttings that spread freely, and guelder rose
is another easy-to-grow shrub with gorgeous
berries.
For shorter-term results and quick birdfood,
then herbaceous plants like teasel are
great, and many flowering perennials like
garden knapweed are favourites with
goldfinches, greenfinches and titmice.
But don’t forget wild herbs that produce
winter berries, and these include the bright
red fruits of our wild arum lily, the cuckoo
flower or lords and ladies. This is easily
grown in gardens along with the more
spectacular Italian arum lily and has herbal
medical associations and rich folklore too.
With poisonous berries (at least to humans),
the plant is best left alone although the
toxins were once extracted and used to treat
a range of ailments.
The highly acrid berries are an irritant and
moreover cause swelling, burning, and
difficulty in breathing. Yet animals and birds
take them freely as a good source of food
and with no obvious signs of harm. The
berries are eaten and seeds dispersed along
hedgerows and woodland edge.
The Christmas
Switch-On
It may sound odd, the news headlines being what they are, but a recent survey
concluded that Smart Home technology could save you up to £450.00 per year
in utility bills.
Motorised blinds and curtain tracks are fast becoming a normal part of
conversation here at Bespoke Blinds & Poles, with Smart Home integration
being a leading topic.
In the Top 5 bestselling “Smart Things” so far this year, Amazon Alexa, Google
Nest and Apple Home all appear. Simple to use, these products are easy to
install, and compatible products can easily be linked.
“It makes sense about the potential savings, if you utilise the technology to its
fullest” says Maxine Hayter, co-owner of Bespoke Blinds & Poles. “You are using
powered products only when you need them, rather than out of habit. For
example, lights only turning on when you walk into a room, blinds opening and
closing to maximise heat retention (at this time of year).”
One of the easiest systems to integrate with your Smart Home is the Luxaflex
PowerView motorised system. Available across their whole blind range,
PowerView offers a flexible power to suit your needs - newly-plastered
window? Use battery power. Hard to reach area? Low voltage mains for
Village Hall future in jeopardy
Dear Dronfield Eye,
DERBYSHIRE County Council is, subject to a final decision,
withdrawing its Adult Care Service from many centres,
including Coal Aston Village Hall.
The loss of the DCC Service not only throws the families of their
clients into disarray but it is likely to result in job cuts amongst
the staff and throws the future viability of the Village Hall into
question.
From the inception of the refurbished Village
Hall back in 2000, the involvement of DCC
Social Services was pivotal. This was
particularly important in the difficult process of
gaining funding from the Millennium Lottery
Fund, but over the long term in providing the
finance covering a chunk of the running costs
of the premises.
We are a non profit-making registered
Charitable Incorporated Organisation, without
the revenue from DCC we could well become a
massive loss-making organisation !
BBC coverage included this statement: “The authority held a
12-week consultation ending in June to discuss its proposals.”
It would seem to be natural in expecting that the consultation
might have included input from ourselves but as things stand, the
only information we have on this entire proposal is that which we
can draw from the media reports. There has been absolutely no
contact made with ourselves.
We now potentially have to make serious decisions affecting
changes in our operation, based only on a newspaper article and
the BBC report. This lack of communication from DCC is nothing
short of a disgrace.
Coal Aston Village Hall
Our only contact with DCC lies with their staff who currently
have The Village Hall as their place of work. It appears that the
consultation hasn’t involved them either.
I have recently referred this matter to Lee Rowley MP whose
office has responded with their intention to seek further
information and give any assistance possible.
Peter Gray, Chair, Coal Aston Village
Hall Management Committee
• In response, a County Council spokesperson
told Dronfield Eye: “We held a 12-week public
consultation earlier this year with people with
learning disabilities and/or autism who use, or
have used, our centres, their families and carers.
“We’re sorry if Mr Gray doesn’t feel that we have
consulted directly with him but as part of that
widely-publicised consultation we encouraged
members of the public - including our staff - to
give their views at a series of face-to-face and
virtual meetings, by filling in an online
questionnaire or requesting paper copies, or by speaking to
us directly.
“More than 800 people took part in that consultation and all
their views were considered in a report about options for the
future of day services for people with learning disabilities and/or
autism which were agreed by our Cabinet on October 13th.
“We will now work with community groups, charities and other
organisations to see how we can develop more services and
activities for people with a learning disability and/or autism to live
safe, fulfilled lives in their local communities.
“We also continue to fully support our staff, as we have done
throughout this process.”
Celebrity
treatment
for face
and hands
Enjoying a visit to Dronfield Woodhouse
salon Bamboo, Dronfield Eye’s
Deborah Wain was impressed with
two high-tech CACI treatments
N
ON-surgical CACI treatments for the face
and body are often referred to as the
‘red carpet beauty secret’ of celebrities.
This might partly account for why many people
haven’t heard of the acclaimed system after more than
two decades – or at least don’t quite know what it
entails.
CACI is a non-invasive technology first developed in a medical
setting. It uses microcurrent impulses to combat general signs of
ageing, along with tackling specific concerns such as acne,
rosacea, or scarring and stretch marks.
The CACI set-up might look a little space-age but it’s simply
applied and subtly effective (making it possible to keep that newfound
glow to yourself!).
Kayleigh West offers CACI treatments at Dronfield’s Bamboo
Hair & Beauty, on Pentland Road.
Kayleigh has been working as a beauty therapist since she left
school and has 12 years’ experience using CACI technology.
A growing number of local clients have been seeing and feeling
the benefits in the relaxing surrounds of the Bamboo salon.
Kayleigh wanted to give me a taster of what CACI can achieve,
starting with a Jowl Lift to firm and tone the jawline.
After a quick facial cleanse, we were straight into the treatment
as Kayleigh gently ran probes over my skin which emit impulses
to lift and redefine contours, and also use serum-filled cotton
buds to plump your skin.
Kayleigh explained that I might feel a tingling sensation and
experience a metallic taste, which I did, but this is normal.
Kayleigh completed one side first so I could see the immediate
impact and then went on to finish the treatment.
Next, she used CACI’s Wrinkle Comb to make light work of
reducing fine lines around both eyes.
My skin looked noticeably fresher and firmer after the facial
treatment – impressive to say I had only walked in an hour
before.
42
Bamboo beauty therapist Kayleigh West administering
the revolutionary facial treatment to Deborah.
While she was working on my face, Kayleigh was keen to
demonstrate the CACI Hand Rejuvenating treatment.
This involved applying intensive skin conditioning gloves to
both hands to hydrate and nourish the skin.
Then ’electro gloves’ were slipped on top which, when
activated by the CACI system, help improve skin firmness and
boost circulation, as
well as targeting age
spots. The effects of
this 30-minute
treatment were
dramatic!
A CACI facial is ideal
in advance of a special
event such as a
wedding or Christmas
party.
However, to achieve
maximum results from
the technique, a fiveweek
course of ten
Electro gloves aid skin firmness
signature treatments is
recommended,
followed by top-up treatments every month to two months.
Appointments are available with Kayleigh on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. Treatments start from £22.
Emulate your Saturday
night dance heroes
E
VERY Saturday evening, thousands of local folk
pull up their favourite chairs and turn on their TVs
to catch the latest episode of Strictly Come Dancing.
Now there’s an invitation for everyone to step out onto the
dancefloor and make a few smooth moves of their own right
here in Dronfield.
Dronfield Vintage Dance is based at the Contact Club, Snape
Hill Lane, and although its sessions attract enthusiasts and
beginners from far and wide, organiser Craig Harrington says for
some unknown reason, Dronfield folk have been slow to accept
the chance to join in.
“People join us from all over - Doncaster, Rotherham,
Nottingham, Barnsley and Worksop - but we would really like to
welcome more Dronfield people,” said Craig.
You don’t need to be a celebrity and you certainly don’t need
to have dance experience - just a desire to learn some steps
and to enjoy yourself.
With dancing to live music, couples and singles are made
welcome.
In addition to keeping fit, exercising the brain and providing an
opportunity to make new friendships, dances here in Dronfield
also frequently raise funds for worthy causes.
One recent event raised £777 for the Weston Park Cancer Care
appeal and the Dronfield Community First Responders charity
has received two sizeable donations towards its work.
Forthcoming dates include a 1930s and 40s Swing Dance night
from 7.30pm on Saturday, November 5th, and numbers from the
1930s-60s at a Christmas Dance on Saturday, December 10th.
Admission to each event is £8. You can simply turn up on the
night or contact Craig on 07831 628864.
Village pond
I
F you’ve ever wondered why Coal Aston veterans call the Royal Oak pub
‘The Pond’, here’s the reason.
The grassed area just across Eckington Road was once the site of a pond which,
judging from this picture, offered plenty of entertainment for local children.
H
OW moving house has
changed! This
photograph, from the Dronfield
Heritage Trust archive, is dated
around 1906 and shows the Spooner
family relocating via horse and cart.
Mary Spooner, nee Evans, is on the left
with twins Eliza and Harriet, two assistants,
and husband Joseph Richard leading the
horse.
On the 1911 Census of Dronfield,
greengrocer Joseph and his wife and
daughters were living at 11 Sheffield Road,
Dronfield. Joseph and Mary were at the
same address when the 1939 Register was
conducted, with Joseph described as a
46
Moving house
greengrocer and fishmonger.
The greengrocer's shop and living
quarters were almost unchanged until the
1980s. At the rear of the property was the
outside toilet and the stable for the horse.
The premises are currently occupied by
Duo hairdressers.
The business passed from the Spooners
to their daughter, Eliza, who married Arthur
Butcher. Their son, Joseph Richard
Spooner Butcher, was taken out of school
by his mother to work in the shop, despite
his wish to go to agricultural college, and
Joseph ran the business until he
retired.
Arthur Butcher lied about his age so
that he could sign up for the war, but
was invalided out a few years later. He
joined the Home Guard in Dronfield and
was so well thought of that, when he died,
his friends created The Arthur Butcher Cup
in his memory. This local cricket event has
been contested for many years.
The original framed photograph was
donated to DHT by Karen Lee Szovjak,
great-granddaughter of Joseph and Mary
Spooner.
More than 250,000 people saw the Queen
lying in state in London. One of them was
Dronfield Eye’s teenage columnist, Sam
Burton, who tells of the experience
A
FEW weeks ago, I made the journey down to
London to join the thousands of people queuing
for the Queen’s lying in state.
It was a memorable experience for a multitude of reasons, but
most of all because of the camaraderie and sense of community
that was demonstrated throughout.
It was late evening by the time my dad and I had joined the
queue, and the cityscape was set out like a picture-perfect tribute,
with flags along the River Thames at half-mast and landmarks like
Tower Bridge illuminated in a shade of royal purple.
And beneath the streetlamps was a line of people as far as the
eye could see – which was a spectacular sight.
Along the route, volunteers continued to work through the night.
People were out on the streets offering flasks of tea and coffee,
and one group we saw had even put together a midnight
barbecue outside their apartments for the people passing by.
The emergency service workers – many of whom had been
brought in from across the country – were also working to keep
people’s spirits high by handing out sweets to kids, and
occasionally shouting a cheerful “Good morning, everyone!” at
3am to those who were drifting asleep.
After 13 hours, we did eventually arrive at Westminster Hall.
There was a palpable aura of power and dignity in the room: the
Queen’s coffin raised high by the catafalque; the glistening jewels
on the Imperial Crown; and the grandeur of the Household
Division.
However, there was one poignant moment that I noticed wasn’t
captured on the TV coverage.
As we left the hall, there was a moment when everyone turned
back. It was an opportunity for one final look, one final farewell,
and one final ‘thank you’.
I think the togetherness that was shown, not just in London, but
across the country, served as an excellent tribute to a remarkable
70 years on the throne.
EYE on what’s on
Wakey wakey!
It’s panto time
It might have a new venue this year but
Chesterfield Theatres’ popular Christmas
pantomime promises to be as fun-filled as
ever. Deborah Wain meets the cast
W
HILE the Pomegranate Theatre is closed as
part of a multi-million pounds upgrade,
performances will switch to the nearby Winding
Wheel. Sleeping Beauty will be the first family
panto to be staged at the Winding Wheel in its
history.
Venue manager, Anthony Radford, said staff would be
making various changes to accommodate the show, starring
actress Michelle Collins, as the Bad Fairy.
He said: “We were absolutely committed to keeping the
panto alive while work goes on at the Pomegranate.”
Michelle, who played EastEnders’ Cindy and Coronation
Street’s Stella, has appeared in panto a number of times but
Sleeping Beauty will be her first show in the North of
England.
She said: “I like getting out of London and from what I’ve
seen of the area, people are really friendly here and the
countryside is beautiful.
“We have a really strong cast and I’m sure that it’s going to
be a lot of fun.”
While best know for her work in TV soaps, Michelle said
she enjoys being an “all-round actor” appearing recently in a
play and a film, and panto is very much part of the mix.
“You’ve got to put as much energy into panto as any other
job you do,” she commented.
Michelle added that this year would hopefully be a return to
a more “normal” panto experience following the Covid-19
pandemic.
And that with the cost-of-living crisis biting for many, it will be
more important than ever to offer families some escapism.
She said: “I think people are being careful about spending
money and so you have to give them something really special.
“There’s nothing nicer than seeing the joyful look on the faces
of kids and hearing them laugh.”
Established
Sleeping Beauty will bring three of its cast members back
together; Scottish singer Jai McDowall, who won the fifth season
of Britain’s Got Talent and plays the hero, Lloyd Warbey, host of
Disney’s Art Attack, who is the fool, and Dame, Andre Vincent.
The trio have worked together in panto before so have an
established rapport.
They promise lots of laughs for youngsters and their parents
and grandparents.
Lloyd, who appeared in his first panto aged just seven, said:
“After everything we’ve all been through in the last few years, we
need a bit of cheer and panto is the right medicine.
“Every show is different and I really enjoy the audience
reaction. You don’t get the show proper until the audience is in
and then it evolves.”
Jai added: “You find out what works and what doesn’t as you
go along and tweak it here and there.”
With an intense run of performances, Jai and Lloyd both plan to
spend Christmas itself in Chesterfield. Lloyd’s birthday is on
December 23rd so he will also be celebrating that locally too.
Jai is looking forward to family and friends travelling down
48
All set to bound onto the Winding Wheel stage in
Sleeping Beauty are, from left: Lloyd Warbey, Olivia Bailey,
Jai McDowall, Andre Vincent and Michelle Collins
from Scotland for the show.
“A group of friends plan the whole New Year around where I
am doing panto and come for the weekend,” he said.
Andre, whose background is in stand-up comedy, is relishing
the chance to don a outrageous frock and play the Dame, his
fifth appearance in that role.
He tells older audience members that they can expect some
chuckles about unfolding current affairs.
“Last year, the Christmas parties at No 10 very quickly got a
mention in pantomimes around the country,” he commented.
When he played the Dame last year, Andre had an amazing 13
costume changes but has yet to find out how many times the
character will swap outfits this year.
Olivia Bailey, Princess Aurora, hails from Nottingham, so she is
performing a little closer to home.
“As a child, I went with my family to the Theatre Royal to see
the panto every year. I would curl my hair and want to look like a
princess and now I am a princess!
“You’re living in a bubble of panto for a few weeks but it feels
like a lovely job to have,” she said.
RONFIELD Parish Church's enchanting Christmas
Tree Festival has become part of the festive
season for many, and dates have now been confirmed
for this year’s event.
The festival began in 2018 and has taken place every year
since, moving outdoors in 2020 due to Covid-19 rules and just
managing to avoid restrictions last year.
This year’s festival takes place from Friday, 25th November, to
Sunday, 4th December.
Up to 100 decorated trees will be on display, provided by local
churches, groups, schools and businesses, with stalls, music from
school choirs and music groups, children's activities, and festive
refreshments.
Organisers stated: “Last year’s festival provided a seasonal
atmosphere of colour, light and warmth which was much
appreciated, and may be even more so this year.
“The church's grateful thanks go to Drs Jill and Tony Bethell,
whose inspiration, enthusiasm and hard work resulted in the first
Christmas Tree Festival.
“They have passed the baton on this year, but are likely to be
around.”
at Dronfield Market
Dear Dronfield Eye,
WE are happy to announce that our Dronfield Community
Outside Market is now free to stand, up until Christmas.
The market is remaining outside, partly due to the Sports
Centre having alteration works done with their heating system,
and to keep the costs down for the stallholders.
We have spoken to market visitors and they comment on the
lack of stalls. We have had some lovely stalls, but due to lack of
footfall, they cannot afford to come back.
The volunteers who run the market would really appreciate
support from the community to enable the market to continue.
Anyone wishing to have a stall, please contact our Market
Co-ordinator, Shelley Hinson, on 07890 843166, or send an
email to: coordinator@dronfield2gether.org.uk
We are also happy to have a different charity stall each week,
so if you know of any charity which is wanting to raise funds, do
ask them to give Shelley a call.
Or, if you would like to be part of our team, as a volunteer, do
let us know.
Target hardening
your home
Pc Julian Matthews,
SNT Officer based at
Lea Road in Dronfield,
explains how we can
all play our part in
reducing burglaries
T
OWARDS the end of last
year, the North East local
policing unit, which includes
Dronfield and rural areas, had
a large increase in dwelling
burglaries which adversely affected our communities.
Whilst dedicated police officers and Community Support
officers of the Derbyshire Constabulary robustly investigate these
offences and target resources accordingly, Derbyshire Police
cannot alone reduce and prevent the opportunity for your home
to be targetted by a burglar.
We do rely on the community’s support in reporting suspicious
incidents and callers in your area. This helps us to build a wider
intelligence picture as to who is coming into our areas and
committing crime.
As a local SNT, we work hard to not only support our busy
response officers who respond to your 999 calls, but also to
reassure the community on all aspects of local policing including
following up burglary victims to offer support and crime
prevention advice, whilst our response officers continue to
investigate the crime.
The SNT is willing to help you to target harden your property by
offering a free visit to assess your security and advise where it
can be improved. We use the ten principles of crime prevention
when we do this:
Target hardening.
Target removal.
Reducing the means.
Reducing the pay-off.
Access control.
Surveillance.
Environmental change.
Rule setting.
Increase the chances of being caught.
Deflecting offenders.
If you would like to speak to our team further in regard to this
matter, to get advice in setting up a Neighbourhood Watch
scheme or to arrange a home visit to assess your security,
contact us through our Facebook page, Dronfield Police SNT.
Continue to report non-urgent crimes by either telephone using
Divorce law has changed,
and there’s more to come
Getting a divorce can now be a little
more straightforward, but there are
still many pitfalls to be aware of
O
N 6th April, 2022, divorce law changed for
the first time in almost 50 years.
Previously in England and Wales, you needed to use
one of five grounds when filing for divorce.
Couples who had not been separated for over two years
most commonly relied on either the grounds of ‘adultery’ or
‘unreasonable behaviour’ to divorce, and often the additional
blame only inflamed the acrimony.
The new Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act
introduced, requires no one to assign ‘fault’ anymore. You
simply need to confirm that the marriage has irretrievably
broken down and therefore cannot be saved, and you can
even file the petition jointly if you wish.
Whilst these changes have made the process for the
divorce easier and less acrimonious, couples often do not
realise that the financial settlement is not an automatic
consequence of divorce.
Financial arrangements are usually negotiated alongside
the divorce proceedings, and if you cannot come to an
agreement, it may be necessary to issue an application at
Court for Financial Remedy Proceedings.
It is important that financial arrangements are formalised by
a Consent Order as this ensures that there is a ‘clean break’,
protecting you from any future claims by your ex.
Tax considerations
Tax planning is unlikely to be top of the list when you’re
going through a separation, but unfortunately failing to
transfer assets at the right time may result in unexpected
charges for Capital Gains Tax, eating into your much-needed
capital.
When you first separate, any transfers and disposals made
during the current tax year can be on a ‘no gain, no loss’
basis, but once outside that first tax year, matters become
complex, and could involve tax charges on the spouse or
civil partner who is transferring the asset.
The likelihood of this becoming more of a problem for
couples is increasing as financial situations become more
complicated.
Recognising that couples going through the trauma of
separation do not consider the tax implications and timing of
asset transfers, the Office of Tax Simplification has
recommended that the tax rules be updated to reflect
a fairer and more modern approach to separation and
divorce.
In response, the Government is proposing to introduce
legislation to change the rules for disposals that take
Kelly Parks, Head of Family Law
at local solicitors Banner Jones
place on or after 6th April, 2023.
The proposed changes would extend the window of ‘no
gain, no loss’ transfers and disposals to three tax years after
the end of the tax year of separation, or where there is a
formal court order with no time limit.
Head of Family Law at local solicitors Banner Jones,
Kelly Parks, says: “Good planning can help avoid such
problems, but this proposal would provide much needed
flexibility.
“It won’t remove the need for specialist legal and tax
advice, and timing will remain important, but it would be a
further positive change for divorcing couples.
“My team can offer specialist advice on financial
arrangements so if you have any questions please get in
touch.”
