Dronfield Town
Mayor, Coun Lilian
Deighton, presents
her monthly update
for Dronfield Eye
T
HE Queen’s sad death, in
September, came as a
complete shock which has
overshadowed time since my
last column.
I was five when Her Majesty was
crowned and remember her
Coronation.
She had looked so well only days
before she passed away, so I found it hard to comprehend. Like
many other people, I felt the Queen was so special.
While many events were cancelled during the national period of
mourning, the visit to Dronfield by a delegation from our German
twin town of Sindelfingen had to go ahead as it was planned for
the weekend after the Queen died.
I was involved in various meals and events, including the official
reception which was moved to Coal Aston Village Hall, from the
Civic Hall, due to the Book of Condolence being opened there.
I spent some time talking with the Mayor of Sindelfingen, Bernd
Vohringer, whom I have met before.
The German visitors were so respectful and one told me that
Queen Elizabeth II was their Queen too.
I was called upon as Mayor for formalities following the Queen’s
death, including introducing the Proclamation of the new
Sovereign, King Charles III, and reading from The Book of
Revelation at the commemorative service at Dronfield Parish
Church. It is such a beautiful piece and I found it very moving.
The moment I found most difficult was singing the National
Anthem for the first time with ‘God Save the King’ in place of
‘God Save the Queen’.
A bright spot during a sad period was my visit to St Andrew’s
Church of England Methodist Primary School, to present books
of welcome to children in the reception class, which was lovely.
Finally, I attended the Civic Service in Dronfield, an annual
service when locally-elected members and members of the
church come together to celebrate the town. A special thanks
to Pauline and Pam for baking the cakes which were enjoyed at
the service.
