The Dronfield Pass Wide and Slow Ride saw the group, escorted by local police, make their way around Dronfield Woodhouse and Holmesfield. Organisers say riding on the roads is becoming increasingly dangerous because of the “ignorance and lack of consideration of many drivers”. They point to an incident in Holmesfield last year which left a horse so badly injured he had to be euthanased, and his young rider traumatised. The group’s Terri Amber said: “Our ride took us past the place where that incident occurred. “We were riding for ourselves, for the riders of the future and for all the horses, riders, carriage drivers who have lost their lives or been injured or traumatised on British roads.” A network of horse riders around the country ride each year as part of the Pass Wide and Slow campaign. The new Highway Code states that motorists should leave at least 2m between vehicle and horse and pass at a maximum speed of 10mph. A public meeting, with Lee Rowley, MP for NE Derbyshire, will be held at Coal Aston Methodist Church, Eckington Road, on Friday, 2nd December, at 7.30pm. It follows on from a similar meeting last year. Terri said: “Other MPs and local councillors are invited, along with the local police and Derbyshire police commissioner, Angelique Foster. “We will be discussing road safety and off-road access for horse riders and other vulnerable road users, looking at the progress made in the last year and what improvements we would like to see in the coming year. “We want to see proactivity and creativity from our local authorities, police and government.” • The Pooh Corner Home for Rescued Horses and Ponies will be holding a Winter table top sale at the Fred Hopkinson Memorial Hall, Unstone, on 19th November, from 11.30am to 3.30pm. S Ten thousand quilts and blankets EW4OTHERS, who knit and sew for good causes, have just celebrated two amazing milestones. Not only has the group been running for 11 years, it has donated over ten thousand quilts and blankets to local people and organisations. Sew4others has a membership of around 40 and over the years they have made quilts, blankets, cardigans, hats and many other items. Goods have been donated to Baby Basics and neonatal units in Sheffield and Chesterfield, The Besom charity, the foster care agency, and local women’s refuges. Co-ordinator, Jane Hodgkinson, said: “We meet in St Andrew’s church, on Pentland Road, from 10am-12 noon, on the last Friday of each month, and always welcome newcomers to join us.”
