dronfield EYE Bench dedication T HE pioneer of Dronfield’s Lea Brook Valley Project has been remembered with the dedication of a wooden bench in his honour. Rev Tony Marron first suggested the idea of the environmental scheme in 2004 and, recruiting other volunteers, the Project was launched in 2005. Since then, and working with other partners, the organisation has transformed the valley from a run-down, neglected part of town into a place now enjoyed by residents and nature. Rev Marron passed away two years ago. His long-time project EMEMBRANCE Day this year falls on Sunday, November 13th - and it will be an extra special occasion in Dronfield. This year marks the centenary of the town’s War Memorial. Funded by public subscription following World War I, it was unveiled on October 29th, 2022. Originally sited on the triangle of land outside the White Swan pub at the bottom of Hallowes Lane, it was designed by Joseph Syddall from Whittington and made by local stonemason George Platts. It depicts the figure of a soldier at ease with his right leg resting against a tree stump and his hands on the muxxle of an upturned rifle. He stands on top of a square plinth and an octagonal three-stepped base. As traffic increased on the old A61 road through the town, the decision was made to 8 colleague, Norman Crowson, paid a personal tribute to him and Rev Dave Walker, who is current chair of the Lea Brook Valley Project, led prayers at a short ceremony to dedicate the bench. The event was attended by Rev Marron’s widow, Annick, and her daughter, Sophie. Town’s War Memorial centenary R relocate the memorial to a new site, outside the town’s library. So in 1973 the stone soldier was wrapped up and transported to his new home. Arrangements for this year’s Remembrance Day Parade are as follows: 10.35am, Parade to move off from School Lane. 10.55am, Hymn and Last Post at War Memorial. 11am, Two minutes silence. 11.02am, Act of Homage / Naming of war dead / Laying of wreaths / Prayers and hymn / National Anthem. 11.15am, Parade re-assembles. There will be a service in the Parish Church following the parade. Other Remembrance Day services are held in the Dronfield Eye area, including at Coal Aston.
