Kath was born on 15th April, 1952, at Old Park Road, Beauchief, Sheffield, to parents Fred and Doris Holmes. She was the youngest of three children and attended school at Greenhill Infants and then Jordanthorpe, before studying to be a librarian at Loughborough Polytechnic. After qualifying, she worked as a librarian at Sheffield Polytechnic for a time. She then took a job at Hartley Seed bookshop in Sheffield, where she was to meet her future husband, David. The couple were married at Dronfield Parish Church on 26th October, 1974, and they lived at Marsh Avenue before later moving to Wilson Road, Coal Aston. Daughter Rachel was born in 1980, son Chris in 1982. The family enjoyed many happy times growing up, including family holidays in Scarborough and Paignton. Kath and David were both active in the Labour Party. Kathy stood for local councils several times, but was not elected. She was a school governor at Holmesdale Infants and Northfield Juniors for many years and also a volunteer at the schools, helping out with things like baking and school trips. In 1992, Kath began working on the School Crossing Patrol on Eckington Road, Coal Aston. She was there for ten years, before moving to work on Stonelow Road. She had been due to receive an award this year, as she had been doing the job for 30 years in total. Kath loved the job and the children she helped, and would have carried on doing it forever if she could, said her family. She also worked part-time as a cleaner for Dronfield Town Council at the football changing rooms and cricket pavilions at Coal Aston and Stonelow. Kath retired from this job in 2012. A member of Coal Aston Methodist Church, she always supported fundraising events such as coffee mornings run by all the local churches and other organisations.
