It’s the league leaders coming to Ashton Gate – 

they are unbeaten, and challenges don’t come 

any bigger than this. 

You want big games, and this is the biggest. 

We’ve got to show what we’re made of. It’s 

good to be back home and we know the fans 

can make a difference. Our last performance 

at home wasn’t good enough so the team that 

goes out there has to put in a performance to 

make the fans proud. 

Saracens is one of the tougher challenges 

in the schedule every year. They are the 

benchmark in terms of consistency. We’ve 

trained well but we’ve got to put it on the 

park – we had 21 minutes that cost us the 

Saints game. Outside of those 21 minutes, we 

played some good rugby. That’s the thing that 

frustrated us the most.

Senior Academy Manager, Gethin Watts hailed an 

‘excellent’ all-round performance after back-toback 

victories for Bears U18 and Development 

side against Exeter Chiefs. 

Tries from Jamie Wood, Oscar Simms Preston, 

Louis Stratton, Dan Williams, George Payne, 

Joachim Hullah and Josh Sheppard helped the 

U18s to a 41-7 victory over Chiefs, while the 

Development side ran out 21-14 winners. 

And Watts was pleased with both teams’ desire 

and attitude at Shaftesbury Park. 

“Following on from the Academy League games 

in August, it was important for us to maintain a 

good level of competition,” he said. 

“Exeter are an excellent side and the game was 

an arm wrestle from start to finish. The boys 

were excellent throughout and it’s so pleasing for 

all to see that the transfer from August and the 

recent block of training present itself in an 80 

min performance. 

“Despite having a number of players on the injury 

list, we were able to give lots of players their 

first experience at this level and they acquitted 

themselves seamlessly. 

“The Development side was predominantly the 

U17 group of players, but also an opportunity 

to look at a number of players who have been 

playing well for their schools, colleges and clubs. 

“It was an excellent game and a great win that 

showed determination and desire to stay in the 

fight.”

BEARSWOMEN 

Sarah Bern made her 50th appearance in an England shirt 

against Australia at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. 

The forward, who made her England international debut 

against France in 2016, described the accolade as a “really 

special achievement.” 

Bern went on to say: “It’s a massive honour to play for your 

country every time you step on the pitch, and you put on the 

shirt. 

“There’s no guarantee you’ll be pulling the jersey on again. To 

be able to say that I’ve done that 50 times is quite special.” 

The milestone came on the same day that fellow forward 

Sarah Hunter, who became the most capped England and 

women’s international. 

“I think it’s really a cool thing to say that I’ve earn my 50th 

cap alongside Sarah Hunter, who’s beaten the record to 

become the most capped player of all time. 

“It was quite nice to share that special moment with her. I was 

an honour to run out on the pitch with her in what was a very 

damp Waitakere Stadium.” 

The Red Roses took on Canada in the semi-finals this morning.

Youngsters attended the Community Foundation’s 

October half-term camp at Lockleaze Sports Centre 

were treated to a visit from Bears stars Steven Lutua, 

Semi Radradra and Siva Naulago. 

The camps consisted of a games-based combination 

of technical input and fun and incorporate a level of 

contact progress through touch, grab and full contact. 

Away from the playing field, the camps also offered 

rugby lifestyle workshops, including nutritional and 

fitness advice.
