ANNUAL

REPORT

JULY 1, 2021 - JUNE 30, 2022

Whether it was your turn to reach out FOR help or to OFFER help,

WRC’s work continues because of you – because of your courage, your

perseverance, and your grit as we face daunting obstacles and the

ongoing pandemic together.

“WRC has

helped me

greatly get

to where I am

today and will

be extremely

helpful with

helping me

navigate

tomorrow.”

~ WRC client

The psychological and financial recovery from a difficult challenge

requires an uphill journey — often much longer than we would like it

to be. Experts estimate that it takes 3-5 years to regain one’s financial

footing after a divorce. With the prevalence of physical and systemic

violence against women, especially women of color, the recovery

process becomes even more challenging and painful.

Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,

argues that grit (defined as the ability to pursue goals with passion

and perseverance as if they are a marathon and not a sprint) is more

important to one’s success than your intellect or IQ.

It is through our shared grit, passion and perseverance this year, that

WRC was able to ...

• provide the highest number of Counseling sessions in our 47- year

history, in addition to continuing virtual minimal-cost Legal

Consultation and Helpline support,

• launch the pilot Financial Stability program, along with volunteer

financial and career coaching, to support long-term financial stability

for women

• restore Girls Lead to pre-pandemic participation levels, and

• implement a shared commitment to equity and inclusion for all

women and girls

Thank you for sharing your passion and perseverance with WRC as we

work to create a world where every woman and girl has the resources,

tools, and support to thrive!

COUNSELING

The Counseling program seeks to instill long

term resiliency and coping skills so that clients

can successfully navigate life’s challenging

transitions now and into the future. WRC’s

Counseling team is led by Clinical Director Kai

Qualls, M.A., LPC. Kai oversees two counselors

and four counseling interns.

Serving during the ongoing Pandemic

The pandemic brought with it additional layers

of complexity and challenge for our clients, with

increased pressures leading to more prevalent

anxiety and depression. The Counseling team

responded to both the heightened need and

complexity of client issues, and offered services

regardless of client income and based on a sliding scale.

Lori Mandour Benedict

Counselor

Kai Qualls

Clinical Director

Lydia Lawson

Counseling saw its session count increase by 14%

over the prior year. Indeed, in responding to the

community’s needs, Counseling at WRC has grown

Safety during the pandemic continued to be a

prevalent concern last year, and the Counseling

team used a HIPAA compliant online therapy portal to

engage with clients individually and in group courses.

Additional Counseling Resources

This past year, Counseling supplemented its services

with an eight-week Mindful Clarity group training

course, emphasizing mindfulness and meditation

techniques, as well as an eight-week Anxiety group

course, which taught skills in reducing anxiety and

increasing resilience in the face of uncertainty.

The Counseling program shares some of its resilience

techniques through Sassy’s Blog, named after the very

astute cat of our Clinical Director Kai Qualls. WRC

counselors contribute to this resilience-based blog.

When asked about perseverance

and our clients, Clinical Director

Kai Qualls quoted Confucius:

“It doesn’t matter how slowly you go,

so long as you do not stop.”

“ You have been an invaluable

resource for me.

Market Valuation of Counseling Services

The total market value of our Counseling services last year (assuming a market rate of $125/hour),

provided to our clients at little to no cost, was nearly $200,000!

FINANCIAL STABILITY

Program Manager

Karen Chonofsky

Resource Coordinator

Kimberley Johnson

WRC’s new program to meet

the community’s evolving needs

WRC launched the Financial Stability program to help

women achieve incomes that would meet their household

expenses while growing financially. Women earning a low

income are often stymied in a cycle of poverty. Research

done by WRC concluded that four factors were key in

influencing financial stability for women: agency &

resilience, education, income and assets.

These four areas are supported by Resource Coordination,

Financial Coaching, Career Coaching, Counseling, and an

18-month PHEBE cohort. PHEBE stands for Persistence,

Hope and Endurance in overcoming Barriers to Equity.

The PHEBE cohort’s aim is to bring greater awareness

and understanding of agency and resilience in the face

of structural barriers.

It is a great service for any woman

in need, glad to get the help

I received when I needed them.

~ Financial Stability client

“It takes a lot of

perseverance to become

financially stable,

especially since the

start of COVID-19 and

the job losses women

have experienced.

We strive to be a

partner in their corner

to ensure that they can

persevere and achieve

their goals, by helping

them manage their

household budget,

identify higher-paying

career opportunities,

and providing resources

to answer their legal

and financial questions.”

FAMILY LAW PROGRAM

Divorce, Custody, Support

Legal Services Coordinator

Kim Dudick, Esq.

WRC is one of the few organizations in

the greater Philadelphia area to offer

low-cost Family Law consultations on

divorce, custody and support. Local

Family Law volunteer attorneys offer

consultations in half hour segments,

scheduled by WRC.

Many women who use this Program

are in financial need and are going

through the divorce process without legal representation. Many

are also in unhealthy relationships in which they experience

financial, physical, and / or psychological abuse.

Attorney Kim Dudick, Supervising Attorney at the Law Offices

of Jennifer J. Riley, coordinates our Family Law Program.

The attorneys in the program work pro bono for WRC. The

consultations are held virtually with the participating attorney,

due to the ongoing pandemic. In addition to these Legal

Consultations, WRC offers referrals to local affiliate attorneys who

provide a one-time consultation for free or at a reduced rate.

Currently, WRC offers virtual Family Law consultations

six times monthly, with times available on our website:

womensresourcecenter.net

I am immensely grateful for your services. The PA Family

Law resource guide and the consultation have helped me

feel much more confident and in control of my situation.

Guide to Family Law

~ Family Law client

“It takes a lot of

perseverance for

clients to even

reach out to

WRC. Our Legal

Consultations

seek to provide

each client with

the necessary

tools, such as

legal knowledge

and resources,

to build upon

that perseverance

and take the next

steps in any

family law

matters.”

~ Kim Dudick, Esq.

WRC also offers an in-house publication called A Guide to Family Law in Pennsylvania

at a nominal cost. This easy to read primer helps women understand the legal

processes surrounding divorce, custody and support and the court fees involved.

Market Valuation of Legal Consultations

The market value of our Family Law consultations and referrals, assuming a

lawyer’s fee of $350 per hour, climbed to nearly $90,000 last year. Our program

is offered at very low cost and during the pandemic, accessible virtually.

Girls Lead helps

mostly middle

school girls with

untapped

leadership

potential,

who are chosen

by their guidance

counselors,

develop leadership

and life skills

that help them avoid pitfalls common to

adolescent girls. A WRC literature review

revealed four common protective skills:

communication, conflict resolution,

decision-making, and problem solving.

WRC facilitators instill these skills during

the first half of the 17-session program.

During the second half, facilitators guide

the participants in conceptualizing and

implementing a Leadership Project,

which uses their newly honed skills

Outcomes

Girls Lead hosts a conference bringing

the cohorts from the different schools

together to present their Leadership

Projects to each other.

This past year, Girls Lead was

implemented virtually and in-person

at 13 participating schools in Chester,

Delaware and Montgomery counties.

Girls Lead is needed more than ever and

is thriving despite the ongoing pandemic.

Life skills that help girls become more

assertive in their relationships while

considering multiple viewpoints, managing

conflict, expressing themselves with

confidence and making good decisions

are a priority during times of high stress.

The virtual conference successfully brought

together the 179 participants over Zoom

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

WRC thanks Board member Bridgett

Battles for leading our Diversity,

Equity & Inclusion Taskforce. The DEI

Taskforce, comprising members of

the Board, staff and volunteers, leads

the planning and implementation of

WRC’s strategies related to embracing

diversity and strengthening equity

and inclusion for all members of the

communities we serve. Key initiatives

over the past year included the

development of WRC’s Commitment

to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion,

inviting feedback from clients,

volunteers, and staff regarding how

included they felt in their interactions

with WRC, expanding the Diversity

Spotlight feature of the email

newsletter, and the development

of strategic objectives for WRC’s

diversity, equity and inclusion work

for the next three years.

One client shared that she had

utilized WRC’s counseling and legal

services. The client shared that

her counselor was “compassionate

and kind and really helped her to

empower herself” and the attorney

was helpful as well. The client stated

that she “was treated with respect

from the first time she called” and

was so appreciative because she is a

recent immigrant and is not always

treated this way.

“This has been one of the hardest

years for me and my family. I have been

given a renewed sense of hope thanks

to the wonderful people at WRC. I am

beyond grateful.”

~ WRC client

Vision

The Women’s Resource Center envisions a world

where women, girls and their families have

the resources and support needed to flourish

through all stages of their lives.

Mission

The Women’s Resource Center helps women

and girls successfully navigate life’s transitions

and inspire others to do the same. By providing

resources, tools, and support for today, we create

hope for tomorrow.

Strategic Goals

1) Expand our intensive, consistent support to

address the needs compounded by the pandemic

and ongoing systemic inequities.

2) Increase sustainable funding and resources to

support continuation and expansion of services.

3) Ensure that WRC’s services and engagement

opportunities are accessible, culturally relevant

and welcoming of all women and girls

throughout the Philadelphia region.
