BIM is a process for creating 

and managing information on a 

construction project throughout 

its whole life cycle. As part of this 

process, a digital description of 

every aspect of the built asset is 

developed, the digital description 

includes a combination of 

information-rich 3D models 

and associated structured data 

such as product, execution and 

handover information. 

Lecico Bathrooms are partners of NBS and 

have a range of BIM models available for 

the specification of DOC M bathroom and 

washroom solutions. NBS is an integrated 

platform for everyone involved in the 

design, supply and construction of the 

built environment.

WATER SAVING 

At Lecico we know that water is 

a unique and limited resource,

reducing the amount of water 

used in the operation of our 

products. As a manufacturer 

of bathroom products we are 

aiding governments in their quest 

to reduce water consumption 

by producing new, exciting, 

innovative and technologically 

advanced bathroom products. 

Current developments include the addition 

of delayed fill inlet valves for our range of 

WC’s, and many of our WC’s operate with 

4 and 2.6 dual flush cisterns. Our taps and 

showers can also be specified with flow 

limiters, all of which helps to reduce water 

usage in the home. We’ve also pledged 

our commitment to the European Water 

Label scheme.

Education establishments require communal 

washrooms and on-site sports facilities to be fitted 

with highly durable and performance efficient 

sanitaryware due to high usage levels. Schools 

specifically need age range appropriate products 

which are correctly sized for their pupil profile. 

Educational establishment sanitaryware needs to 

be durable, low maintenance and easy to clean. 

As a commercial sanitaryware manufacturer, Lecico 

products are designed to meet the needs of the 

installation and intended user groups. Our products 

are constructed to avoid dirt traps and therefore are 

more hygienic, they are designed to reduce water 

usage and maintenance intervals whilst being easy 

to clean. 

Our range of school specific urinals and WC’s includes 

junior sized products as well as the standard adult 

sized products for schools, colleges and university 

campuses. The choice of product range will depend on 

the overall design and scale of the development but 

there are plenty of options for wall hung products to 

make floor cleaning easier, plus water saving products 

with automated flushing or reduced flush volumes. 

As well as sanitaryware there are also taps with 

infra red activation and taps designed specifically 

to encourage the youngest of users to remember 

to wash their hands! Some of our seats now include 

anti-bacterial formulae to attack surface mounted 

germs and reduce the chance of cross contamination 

between users.

WHAT IS A 

SCHOOLS WASHROOM? 

A washroom is quite simply a room with washing 

and toilet facilities. But within the education sector 

the demands and legal requirements required for a 

wash room differ with age and the number of pupils. 

It is recommended that pupils under the age of five 

years have one toilet for every ten pupils. 

When the majority of pupils are under the age of 

eleven years, then as many wash basins as toilets 

are required. 

Once over the age of five, the number of toilets 

required drops to one WC per twenty pupils and 

the demand of wash basins changes to washrooms 

with 3 or more toilets must have 2 thirds the number 

of washbasins. 

Junior toilet pans and lowered sinks are recommended 

for easy access by the children. 

Self closing taps are also beneficial in schools as the 

risk of flooding is reduced. 

Staff and visitor toilets must be separate from the 

pupils toilets. 

Separate boys and girls washrooms are not required 

until the pupils are eight years old and above.

CHOOSING THE 

RIGHT SCHOOLS TOILET 

There are two main factors that will help find the perfect WC for your 

next installation. The height of the rim, which will correlate to the age 

of the intended users and the style. Lecico offer close coupled, back to 

wall and low level WC’s in three sizes for the education market and wall 

hung pans in a single size, that can be mounted at different heights to 

suite different users. Below is a guide to make this decision easier.

BASIN AND TAPS 

From pedestal mounted to undercounter, we have a wide range of basins in a wide 

range of sizes. Wall or counter mounting basins allows the height to be determined 

based upon the setting, and the age of the intended users. To compliment our 

range of basin we also offer a selection of brassware, from the more traditional 

concussive taps to bright and colourful infra-red operated taps. School taps must 

be WRAS approved. Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMVs) can be set by the user to 

ensure a safe water temperature for children.

PLANNING AN 

ACCESSIBLE WASHROOM 

Doc M (Document M) of the 

building regulations provides 

government guidance on 

the layouts of an accessible 

washroom. 

• Each toilet block should have 

Doc M compliant washrooms 

built to the same quality and 

aesthetic as other facilities. 

• They should be provided at 

convenient location around 

the school. 

• Accessible toilets for staff and 

visitors should be separate to 

those used by students. 

When planning a bathroom for students with special 

education needs, consider the following principles: 

• Promoting independence. 

• Promoting ease of care and carer safety and comfort. 

• Promoting student privacy and safety. 

“An accessible toilet is designed to meet the majority of 

needs of independent wheelchair users* and people with 

mobility impairments, as well as the additional requirements 

of people with bowel and bladder conditions (such as 

colostomy bag users). It also helps people with other physical 

conditions such as impaired dexterity and grip, balance and 

other conditions where physical support from grab rails and 

the presence of an emergency alarm is helpful.” 

The Centre for Accessible Environments (CAE) 

Document M of the building regulations (2004) and 

BS 8300-2009 provide government guidance on the layouts 

of an accessible washroom in non-domestic settings. 

It ensures consistent levels of installation and function 

designed for the less-abled user. 

Each toilet needs to contain one toilet and one washbasin 

and have a door opening directly onto a circulation space 

that is not a staircase and which can be secured from the 

inside. Where possible, the number and location of accessible 

toilets will be sufficient to ensure a reasonable travel distance 

for users that does not involve changing floor levels*. 

All Lecico DocM products are Lantac approved, 

and when installed correctly comply to Part M of 

the building regulations. 

* The requirements of Part M of the Building Regulations will be satisfied if any 

wheelchair user does not have to travel more than 40m horizontally to reach 

an accessible toilet. With young pupils the travel distance may need to be less.
