SAVING WATER
- A UNIQUE
AND LIMITED
RESOURCE
At Lecico we know that water is a unique and limited resource. We’re committed to
reducing the amount of water used in the operation of our WCs, most come with a dual
flush mechanism as standard.
In addition we are now able to offer an increasing
number of products within our ranges which
only require 4/2.6 litres of water for flushing. This
represents a significant saving on utility bills.
Other current developments include the addition
of delayed fill inlet valves for our range of WCs,
our exclusive distribution partnership with Propelair,
waterless urinals, and flow restrictors in our
brassware ranges.
We’ve also pledged our commitment to the
Unified Water Label scheme. The scheme provides
easy access to a comparative database of
bathroom products, which when installed and
used correctly will use less water and save money.
Throughout the brochure you will find the UWLA
efficiency ratings where applicable.
You can use the Unified Water Label as a guide to
find a product that will save you money.
Lecico, as a manufacturer of bathroom ceramics
are aiding governments in their quest to reduce
water consumption by producing new, exciting,
innovative and technologically advanced
bathroom products.
ENVIRONMENTAL
ASSESSMENT METHODS
The drive for more environmental practices is
having a big impact on building design with
clients looking at more sustainable ways to
build and fit out their buildings. This has seen
designers and builders adopt environmental
assessment tools to help guide product
selection, demonstrate best practice and
document their efforts to create sustainable
work environments.
Using an environmental assessment tool
greatly improves the likelihood of making
informed and creative decisions in the
way a project is designed. Selecting the
right materials, products and mechanical,
electrical and plumbing systems it uses can
greatly reduce the buildings initial and life
cycle impact on the environment, including
reduced consumption of water, reduced
energy costs, and a healthier environment
for users.
LEED
LEED was created in 1998 by the US Green Building Council. Although primarily an American system,
its use has been recognised across the world with over 100,000 certified projects in 167 countries.
LEED does not use assessors to collect evidence for certification.
Instead, the design team collate data and send it to the USGBC.
Once examined a LEED certification is awarded on its points
gained across 6 categories.
BREEAM
The BREEAM environmental assessment tool has evolved significantly since its first iteration in
1990 and is recognised and used across 74 countries on 535000 buildings. BREEAM provides a
sustainability assessment framework, measuring sustainable value across a series of categories and
validating this performance with third-party certification.
Utilising BREEAM encourages collaboration and innovation in the design and product development
by manufacturers.
Clients and Designers can set out their aspiration for the build, to construct with a target rating
based on the scale of ‘Pass’, ‘Good’, ‘Very Good’, ‘Excellent’ and ‘Outstanding’. The assessment
reflects the performance achieved by the project and is measured against the standards and
benchmarked against similar projects.
SKA RATING
SKA Rating was developed from research
work commissioned by the contractor
SKANSEN with RICS to determine if it was
possible to measure the environmental
impact of fit-outs projects to remove any
ambiguity in claims of performance.
The result was a SKA Rating which launched
in 2009 SKA comprises of 112 good practice
measures, covering energy and CO2
emissions, waste, water, materials,
pollution, wellbeing and transport.
Each of these assessments include sections
on water usage. 50% of a buildings water
is used and flushed away which can be
a significant cost not only on the building
operator but also the water utility company
in terms of maintaining infrastructure to and
from the building, and the energy consumed
in water treatment.
WATER DO
DIFFERENT TOILET
SOLUTIONS USE
TO FLUSH?
TOILET TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS &
COMPARISONS OF WATER SAVING
Toilets use nearly 50% of all water
consumed in washrooms.
Dual flush WCs offer the user a full or
reduced flush option.
Old fashioned toilets use up to 13 litres of water
per flush.
Standard toilets in line with current legislation
(Part G) use 6 litres of water from a single flush.
Flush volume calculations at the defined BREEAM
flush ratio are:
- 6/4 litre dual flush = 4.5 litres
- 4/2.6 litre dual flush = 2.95 litres
Propelair uses 1.5 litres per flush which
achieves the highest BREEAM rating
available for WCs.
WHAT SOLUTIONS
ARE AVAILABLE
TO REDUCE
URINAL FLUSH
VOLUMES
There are a range of products available to control urinal flush volumes in response to
the frequency of use, including:
- Manual shut off, timer and solenoid valves
- Pressure-sensitive hydraulic valves
- Passive infrared (PIR) sensor
Typical savings can achieve around 70% less
water use
Products that use grey water/rain water can
reduce mains water consumption by 50%-70%
Waterless urinals can eliminate water
use entirely
Urinals use circa 22% of all water consumed in
washrooms
Base level BREEAM urinal flush volumes are
calculated as:
- 10 litres per hour for a single urinal
- 7.5 litres per hour per urinal for 2 or more urinals
A 70% reduction in water consumption through the
use of sensors reduces water usage to around 3
litres per hour for a single urinal
Using waterless urinals can eliminate the use of any
water to flush
Waterless urinals can eliminate
water use entirely
WHAT SOLUTIONS
ARE AVAILABLE
TO REDUCE
WATER USAGE
FROM TAPS?
A wide range of products are available to reduce water usage from taps, including:
Water brake mixer taps – (aka “click” or “twostage”
taps) operate on flow rates typically 5
and 10 litres per minute until a resistance point on
opening the tap is reached. To open the tap any
further requires additional force.
Spray taps – water savings can typically be up to
50%, with flow rates of 4-8 litres a minute.
Electronic sensor taps – water savings of up
to 70% can be achieved, but is dependent on the
end flow rate and flow duration. A typical flow rate
is 4-8 litres per minute.
Self-closing taps – water savings can be up to
50%, but are dependent on end flow rate and
flow duration.
Tap flow regulators – flow regulators are
designed to maintain a constant flow independent
of supply pressure.
Flow regulators are often integral in
“water-efficient” taps.
Standard taps can use over 12 litres of water
a minute
Base level BREEAM water usage from taps is 10
litres per minute.
Taps with flow regulators fitted can
reduce the flow rate down to as little
as 2 litres per minute.
14
15

WHAT SOLUTIONS
ARE AVAILABLE
TO REDUCE
WATER USAGE
FROM SHOWERS?
There are a range of products available to reduce water usage from
showers, including:
Electronic (sensor) showers – can save up
to 70% of water, but are dependent on the end
flow rate and flow duration setting; for example,
a typical flow rate of 6-8 litres.
Push-button showers – typically can save up
to 50%, but are dependent on end flow rate. A
typical flow rate is between 6 and 10 litres.
Base level BREEAM water usage for showers is 12
litres per minute.
Shower regulators – can offer savings of
typically 50%, but are dependent on flow rate.
THE BENEFITS OF SAVING WATER
With consciousness of waste, carbon emissions, climate change and ESG
(Environmental, Social and Governance) being at the forefront of commercial clients’
concerns, saving water is high on the agenda.
Selecting water-efficient products not only saves water but directly impacts a premises’
carbon footprint by reducing the need for supply and water treatment processing.
Macro-economic, social, and sustainability drivers have led to water saving being an
important consideration for all new build and refurbishment construction projects.
The range of benefits offered by specifying water saving products are numerous:
Economic
Significant reductions can be made in
operational costs.
Most companies will be able to claim
capital allowances under their annual
investment allowance.
Environmental
Better protection of the natural waterway habitats.
Significant carbon savings from reductions in
water treatment.
Social
We are all aware of the damage our lifestyles have
