We head into this fixture off the back of an 

amazing Allianz Cup campaign, and we hope to 

springboard off that into the Allianz Premier 

15s season. 

Today is going to be a huge challenge. Everyone 

knows the most dangerous kind of animal is a 

wounded one, so Wasps will come out fighting here 

and will absolutely want to prove themselves. 

From our perspective we just need to make sure 

we continue our good form. You’ll be able to 

expect a lot of free-flowing rugby this afternoon. 

Unlike the men’s game, women’s rugby is not so 

set piece orientated, there’ll be some amazing 

individual skills on show. I can guarantee that. We 

want to play open expansive rugby and to score 

plenty of tries. 

You’ll see at kick-off that the team have their 

names on their shirts, we’re the first club in the 

Premier 15s to do that. We want to show these 

women for not only the amazing rugby players 

that they’re, but also as fantastic characters and 

athletes. 

As a youngster growing up I dreamt of having my 

name on the back of a shirt. We want young girls 

to have the same dream and we’ve put that into 

action. We want to build those role models. 

For the likes of Pam, Murray, Reed and the players 

involved here today, having their names on their 

shirts is a huge recognition of their hard work 

and also making them the inspiration for the next 

generation. That’s something we’re absolutely 

committed to at the Bears. 

The crowd we had here against Harlequins last 

season was exceptional, and we’ll be looking to get 

the same buzz from the fans this afternoon. The 

players absolutely love supporters and revel in the 

noise they generate. Seeing all those faces in the 

crowd before and after the game is something we 

can certainly use as that 16th player.

We’re back at Ashton Gate this weekend for 

what will undoubtedly be a highlight weekend 

for women’s sport in Bristol with both us and 

Bristol Bears Women running out in BS3 in the 

space of 24 hours. 

Bears kick off the action on Saturday afternoon 

and after a fantastic first season under Dave Ward 

and I’m sure they’ll want to hit the ground running 

in their first league fixture this weekend against 

Wasps - we wish them all the best of luck. 

We’ve had a quite a break since our last game with 

the international break and our late postponement 

before that, so the group are chomping at the bit 

to get back on the pitch and even better it’s at 

Ashton Gate. 

Across the opening months of the season, one of 

the most pleasing factors for us as a coaching staff 

is that we have demonstrated great consistency at 

both ends of the pitch. We have shown what we’re 

capable of in front of goal with several different 

scorers, but at the same time we are keeping clean 

sheets which is one of the main foundations to 

having a successful season. 

We have set our standards and if we continue 

to perform to the same level or higher, which I 

believe is achievable, we’ll continue to win more 

and more games. 

Becoming complacent is something we can’t 

afford to do. The standards we set in our training, 

preparations and matches can’t slip and I believe 

if we continue to look at ourselves and what we’re 

doing on a day-to-day basis then they won’t drop. 

As always, the international break has seen 

a number of our group head away with their 

respective nations and it’s been fantastic to see 

how they have performed. Abi was among the 

goals for Scotland, Shania picked up an assist away 

with Jamaica as well as Ffion and Liv both getting 

valuable minutes away with Wales. 

Time away with your country can be invaluable to 

a player’s development and hopefully those that 

have been away will bring what they have learnt 

back into the group, and we’ll continue to kick on.

We’ve been looking forward to playing here today for ages. The 

whole squad have been counting down to it. 

N 

It’s been a whole month since 

we last played a game, so today 

is just going to be fantastic to 

get a run out and play the game 

we all love in front of a fantastic 

crowd at Ashton Gate. 

It’s an amazing achievement to 

be able to have this Women’s 

Weekend of Sport. For us to be 

playing today and the Robins 

tomorrow, I don’t see any other 

team doing that in the league. 

To be able to do this off the 

back of the success of the 

Lioness in the summer and the 

Rugby World Cup that just took 

place in New Zealand, shows 

that we’re going in the right 

direction. It shows that women’s 

sport is continuously growing, 

and we’ve seen that from 

those two events with sold out 

stadiums at both finals. 

We hope we inspire the next 

generation of rugby stars; little 

girls, little boys…anyone. Maybe 

you’ve never picked up a rugby 

ball before, but this might 

encourage you to. 

There are so many teams in 

and around Bristol that have 

fantastic pathways, we hope we 

can inspire at least one person 

to pick up a rugby ball and get 

into the sport. 

What you can expect from us 

today is a fast, slick, precise 

and aggressive game. That’s 

the style of rugby we’ve been 

playing in the Allianz Cup and 

we hope to continue that in 

the Premier 15s. We’ve had 

that extra month to prepare 

ourselves even more, so I’m 

excited to show the fans today 

what we’ve been working on. 

Our opponents here today have 

nothing to lose, we can expect 

a bit of attitude from them. 

They have obviously been in a 

difficult situation, so they’ll be 

looking forward to playing and 

will be raring to go, just like we 

are. It’ll be a really good battle. 

From behalf of myself and the 

whole team we would just like 

to say a massive thank you to 

everyone who has come here to 

support us today. We appreciate 

you buying tickets and spending 

your Saturday watching us, 

especially those who have never 

watched rugby before. 

I have a few of my old teachers 

here supporting me. We can’t 

wait to put on a massive 

performance and hopefully 

you’ll come and watch us 

throughout the season.

Aimee Palmer is confident her side can continue the impressive 

form they’ve shown so far this season as the Robins welcome 

Birmingham City to Ashton Gate. 

With a big crowd expected 

in BS3, the City skipper says 

her side are ‘relishing’ in the 

pressure and want to keep 

building on an excellent first 

seven outings. 

“It will be great to have the fans 

out in their numbers and they 

really help us perform at our 

best,” she said. 

“We love playing at Ashton Gate 

but at the end of the day it’s a 

game of football that we need 

to win. 

“We always say that the 

international break comes at 

the wrong time but right now, 

any time we’re not playing is 

a wrong time for us as we’re 

building momentum every time 

we play. 

Sitting atop the Championship 

standing brings added pressure 

each weekend, but Palmer and 

her side are riding that wave. 

“We’ve got some great players 

in this squad, and everyone 

is important regardless of 

whether they’re in the starting 

eleven or not,” she said. 

“Every single player and every 

member of staff has already 

made an impact this season. 

“We’re top of the table and 

two points clear with a game 

in hand so we’re the team to 

beat at the minute, but we’re 

relishing in that. 

“We love the pressure.” 

“It may not always be pretty, 

but we manage to get the job 

done and that shows the depth 

of our squad.” 

She continued: “Birmingham 

got relegated from the WSL last 

season so we know it will be a 

tough test. 

“They have some good players 

in that squad, but we’ve shown 

this season that we can step 

up to every occasion so we’re 

really looking forward to it.”
