Regionally Focused, Globally Connected

Gauged by global health, our contributions to the betterment of public health in the EMR resonate beyond the borders of one region. In this report for 2021/2022, we share these regionally focused yet globally connected contributions to several areas of public health: field epidemiology, polio and routine immunization, disease surveillance, biorisk management, the one health approach, public health emergency management, non-communicable diseases, and research.

MoUs and Agreements<br />

In 2021/2022, EMPHNET grew its network of collaborators and partners. Alongside fellow members from regional<br />

and international entities, EMPHNET now has various types of partnerships and collaborations with the Global<br />

Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE), WHO Regional Office of the Eastern Mediterranean, Pharmaceutical<br />

industries (MSD/MERCK, Sanofi, Pfizer), UK Health Security Agency, International Organization for Migration,<br />

Gulf CDC, Africa CDC, Imperial College London, Vital Strategies, and Family Health International (FHI 360). In<br />

continuation and progress of several past projects, EMPHNET expanded the collaboration with the USCDC to<br />

include the CDC influenza division. In addition, EMPHNET received Gavi’s, the Vaccine Alliance, prequalification for<br />

Afghanistan, Sudan, and Yemen; and this identifies our organization’s inclusion on Gavi’s approved suppliers list.<br />

Memberships<br />

Using its expertise from and for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, EMPHNET looks forward to contributing<br />

to global health through becoming a member in notable relevant networks, alliances, and associations. Last<br />

year, EMPHNET officially became a sustaining member of the WFPHA - World Federation of Public Health<br />

Associations, a network member of the Global NCD Alliance, a member in the Global Alliance on War,<br />

Conflict, and Health (GAWCH), and partners with the International Association of National Public Health<br />

Institutes (IANPHI). A significant event within our membership of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response<br />

Network (GOARN) was the election of EMPHNET’s Executive Director Dr. Mohannad Al Nsour as the Vice Chair<br />

of GOARN’s Steering Committee.<br />

*Established in 2021 as EMPHNET’s academic arm, the International Academy of Public Health, IAPH, is a multi-disciplinary professional development<br />

academy for the public health workforce. As a specialized entity, IAPH provides diverse training programs in numerous areas of public health to contribute to<br />

the development of health services within and outside the Eastern Mediterranean Region.<br />

EMPHNET has been recognized for achievements in strengthening<br />

provision of NCD services at the primary healthcare level across<br />

countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, including by promoting<br />

greater multisectoral coordination of the NCD response for refugee<br />

populations and host communities in Jordan.<br />
