CHAPTER 3For me, nostalgia exhibits itselfmost clearly in the form of memoriesof when I was a toddlerin China where my grandparentshad taken care of me.Where we lived, there werelittle food trucks/carts that wereup at the crack of dawn sellingbreakfast food like youtiaos.There was a market near us wherepeople sold produce. There wasa park my grandparents wouldtake me to in the evenings withmany other kids and grandparents.I had been a picky eater and wouldtake forever eating a meal. I likedto dance and dress up. I hadto fall asleep with a specific blanketwith a pattern of bears in bluecorduroy pants because I liked howit felt. In the little, close-knit townwhere my grandparents had grownup, I came to define my very firstmeaning of home. Around fourteenyears have gone by. As I reflecteven now, I realize that as they arewatching me grow up, I’m watchingthem grow older. I Facetimed themyesterday, having noticed that ithad been almost a month since thelast time. As soon as I heard themcall me by my nickname in Mandarinand speak the Fuzhonese dialect Ionly semi-understand now, I smiled.When I think of nostalgia, thememories are strongly intertwinedwith the two people who alwayskeep me in their hearts and thinkof me as the little girl they fondlytook care of so long ago. ■42
