Centraide Canada, have announced that the application process 

for the Community Services Recovery Fund is now open. 

Community foundations, including Osprey Community Foundation 

and its affiliates the Slocan Valley Legacy Society, Salmo 

Valley Fund and the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake 

are managing the application 

process alongside 

the Canadian Red Cross 

and local United Ways to 

reach a broad and diverse 

range of community service 

organizations, such 

as charities, non-profits 

and Indigenous governing 

bodies. 

The Community Services 

Recovery Fund is a 

historic one-time investment 

of $400 million 

that will help community 

service organizations to 

adapt, to modernize and 

to be better equipped 

to improve the efficacy, 

accessibility and sustainability 

of the community 

services that they provide, 

so they can continue 

to support communities 

across Canada through the 

pandemic recovery and 

beyond. 

Community service 

organizations are at the 

forefront of addressing 

communities’ needs, especially 

during the COVID- 

19 pandemic. Since the 

early phases of the pandemic, 

they have struggled 

with increased demand 

for their services, reduced 

revenues, declines in charitable 

giving due to the 

rising cost of living, and 

a greater need to make 

use of digital tools. Many 

of them are struggling to 

recover and adapt their 

services to the changing 

needs of Nelson, Slocan 

Valley, Salmo Valley and 

North Kootenay Lake.

A Focus on Trails 

Columbia Basin Trust supports trail 

improvements and trail-crew jobs throughout 

the region. Some trails will be longer, 

get upgraded surfaces, or have new bridges 

or benches. In 17 communities, 26 projects 

are improving trails, supported by Columbia 

Basin Trust. In addition,16 organizations are 

receiving Trust funds to offer 38 trail-crew 

jobs. 

“Together, these projects will give Columbia 

Basin residents and visitors access to even 

better and well-maintained trail systems as 

they experience the region’s incredible surroundings, 

while at the same time providing 

jobs,” said Justine Cohen, Manager, Delivery 

of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust. “Getting 

outside can positively influence physical 

and mental health, and help us connect 

with nature, so trails can have wide-reaching 

impacts.” 

Projects include activities such as enhancing 

existing trails or adding infrastructure 

like benches or signage. The Trust is also 

providing wage subsidies so organizations 

can hire trail workers, enabling unemployed 

and underemployed Basin residents to gain 

valuable work experience and advance their 

skills while at the same time enhancing trails.

Revamped Access to Spectacular Views 

The trails have names like Songbird, True 

Blue, Friendly Giant and Straight Face. Rising 

up Mount Buchanan near Kaslo, the 

network will benefit from activities like 

adding connector trails, removing hazardous 

trees and upgrading signage, overseen 

by the Kaslo Outdoor Recreation and Trails

“Our club saw an amazing number of riders 

accessing these trails in summer 2022, 

and our projects reflect the need to stay 

ahead of this influx of users of various age 

groups, skill levels and abilities,” said Dan 

Miles, President. “Well-developed and maintained 

trails promote an active lifestyle, and 

these trails will continue to help Kaslo and 

the north end of Kootenay Lake participate 

in the unprecedented expansion of mountain 

bike culture and trail tourism in BC.” 

A Section of Rail Trail Gets a Brighter 

Future 

Since the 1980s, people have been using 

the rail trail between Summit Lake and New 

Denver for commuting, recreation and wildlife 

viewing. Now the Rosebery Bonanza 

Summit Trail Alliance Society is improving 

an eight-kilometre section between Rosebery 

and Hills to make it more inclusive for 

users, while keeping in mind the environment 

and wildlife values. 

“Everybody loves rail trails!” said Mike 

Koolen, President. “This section will provide 

the last link in the corridor that stretches 

between Nakusp, New Denver and beyond, 

used by locals and visitors year-round for 

walking, cycling, cross-country skiing, 

beach access and wildlife viewing. Including 

this trail in our local inventory will help us 

continue to promote our trails as a recreation 

destination and important wildlife corridor 

while providing people with an enhanced 

trail experience.” 

Easier Maintenance Ahead for a Local 

Amenity 

Getting exercise and spending time with 

a buddy are some of the reasons users have 

said they love the West Jaffray trail system. 

Now the South Country Trails and Recreation 

Association is improving the trails by 

adding crushed rock in some often-muddy 

locations, buying a tool shed and purchasing 

trail-maintenance equipment like rakes, 

shovels and wheelbarrows. 

“We look forward to continuing to make 

our trail system as user-friendly and enjoyable 

to our community members as possible,” 

said Kristina Woodford, Treasurer. 

“This project will enhance the usability 

and beauty of our newly built trails, so that 

school groups, seniors and people with differing 

abilities can use the trails and feel safe, 

all while promoting health and wellness in 

our community.”

of their choosing to showcase their vocal range. A scene reading

Tech Hub at the Nelson Library 

The Nelson Public Library launches its Tech Hub! The 

Tech Hub gives library members free access to equipment 

and software to record voice, create videos, digitize analog 

materials and create digital arts. Learn more about training 

opportunities, borrow a laptop, play with the children’s 

tech toys or take a fun photo in front of the green screen. 

The Tech Hub was generously funded by the Columbia 

Basin Trust with support from the City of Nelson and the 

Regional District of the Central Kootenays, Areas F and 

H. It is made up of three rooms: A Digitization Station 

with equipment to convert those precious memories saved 

in analog formats like cassettes or slides to digital; a Media 

Station featuring a Microsoft Surface Studio 2 with Adobe 

Creative Cloud software for photography, design, video, 

web and more; and a Recording 

Studio with equipment for 

recording voice, a DSLR camera 

and lighting. 

“The Library has always 

been a place that offers access 

to ideas, information and new 

skills. The Tech Hub allows us 

to take that further by offering 

access to technology to spark 

curiosity, creativity and collaboration,” 

says Chief Librarian, 

Tracey Therrien. “All you need 

is your library card, an idea 

and a willingness to learn new 

things.” 

Technology newbies need 

not be afraid. Library staff have 

created basic training manuals 

and lists of library resources 

to help get started on using 

the equipment and software. 

Library members also have 

access to LinkedIn Learning, 

an online learning platform 

with thousands of courses to

It’s that time of year again – granting season 

at the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund! The 

2023 application form, guidelines, criteria 

and contact information are now available on 

the website at www.slocanvalleylegacy.com . 

Applications must be submitted online, and 

the deadline to apply is March 17, 2023. The 

Slocan Valley Legacy Fund provides grants 

for qualified Slocan Valley projects that are 

creative, value the diversity of our valley, 

translate problems into solutions, enrich 

interconnectedness, and protect our natural 

environment. Last year we were able to 

fund nine different groups, and this year we 

are looking forward to making a significant 

difference in our community once again.

Coldest Night of the Year 

Nelson CARES Society is excited to be hosting the 9th annual 

Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraising campaign on Saturday, 

February 25th, 2023. Nelson CARES is looking forward to 

the community getting together to ‘gather for good’ and show their 

support for those who are most vulnerable in this community. 

On Saturday, Feb 25th, CNOY walkers will gather at Central 

(Wildflower) School to register, pick up their 2023 CNOY toque 

and hit the streets for either the 2km or 5km walk. Nelsonites will 

be out walking in the cold and supporting people who face incredible 

vulnerabilities and are at risk of homelessness. The walk will 

wrap up at St Joseph’s school for a warm bowl of chilli, cornbread 

muffins and high-fives as the community celebrates together. 

The funds raised stay in the community to support Nelson 

CARES programming. For the past six years, the Ready for Home 

program has been fully funded by Coldest Night of the Year. At the 

core of Ready for Home is a full-time paid staff member who works 

with individuals at Ward Street Place to provide support for health 

resources, stabilize housing conditions and work toward preventing 

homelessness. This program assists Nelson CARES tenants 

with life skills development; connection to health services, employment 

and income supports anything that will help these residences 

sustain affordable housing units and remain off the streets. 

CNOY team captains, walkers, sponsors, donors, and volunteers

It is with deepest and heartfelt sadness we announce that Mom peacefully passed into the 

loving arms of God at the age of 90 years. Born on the family homestead into a supportive 

community of Slovak immigrant farmers in Shutty Bench, Mom learned the value of hard 

work and “love thy neighbour” at an early age. Not straying too far from her birth roots, 

Mom married and raised her children on a strong foundation of family, faith, and friends in 

the neighbouring village of Kaslo. She was involved in her community and volunteered her 

time with the Canadian Legion and Catholic Woman’s League. She also helped pioneer in 

the era of the “working Moms” and ended her career with West Kootenay Power, a job she 

fondly reminisced about many years after her retirement. 

Mom eventually moved to Nelson to enjoy her final years closer to her family. She loved a good joke, a good laugh, spending time 

with family and friends, and practicing her unwavering Catholic religion and faith in God. She also found enjoyment in music 

and dancing which had her tapping her toes to the end and was affectionately called the “dancing queen” by the Mtn Lakes Staff. 

Mom lovingly leaves behind and will be greatly missed by her children; Clint, Donna (Len), Ken (Edel), and Dianne; grandchildren 

Eric, Kevin and Dean Thompson, Dakota, McKenna and Curran Carlson, Mary Kate and Conall Riley and great-grandchildren 

Reese and Karsyn Thompson. Mom will now join her heavenly family; husband, Orval Riley; parents Anna Turcak and 

Louis Furiak; siblings Louise Shutty, Julia Johnson and Joe Furiak; and step-father Steve Turcak. 

Deepest gratitude to Lakeview Village and Mtn. Lakes staff and Dr. Janz for their caring support in allowing Mom to live her 

final years with dignity and respect. Special thanks also to Thompson Funeral Service for their compassionate support in managing 

the cremation. Family internment of ashes to follow in the spring in the Nelson Memorial Cemetery.

Douglas Alf Thompson 

November 19, 1949 – January 4, 2023 

Doug Thompson died peacefully of natural causes 

in Kamloops, BC, with his niece Stacey and her 

husband Travis by his side. He was born in Langley 

BC, the eldest son of Lyle and Arieda Thompson. The 

family moved to Quesnel in the 1950’s, where Doug 

grew up attending school and learning his first carpentry 

skills from his father. As a young man his carpentry 

and woodworking talent was apparent, and he 

occasionally made extra money completing some of 

his schoolmates shop projects for them. He earned 

his Journeyman certification after moving to Vancouver 

in the late 1960’s. In the early 1970’s he met and 

started working with Attila Balogh, the renowned 

creator of Odyssey Guitars. This began Doug’s journey 

to becoming a well-respected luthier, and a masterful 

guitar repairman with skills second to none. He 

moved to the Kootenays in 1980 with his then wife 

Holly Ridenour, and set up shop on Kootenay St. in 

Nelson. A few years later they moved to Beasley, 

and Doug began a five-year project hand digging 

a basement under two side-by-side cabins on 

the property. That basement became his new 

shop. The Thompson Guitars sign stood 

on the side of Highway 3A for over twenty 

years. His reputation brought business, 

everyone from famous musicians to total 

beginners. In Doug’s fifty-year career he 

worked on thousands of guitars; repairing, 

restoring, tweaking them to perfection. 

All who entered his well-organized 

shop received the same 

treatment and respect. He didn’t 

like pretention or large egos, 

and he cut no corners upholding 

his standards 

of quality and 

integrity.

Mary Helen Riley 

March 19, 1932 – December 23, 2022 

May you forever dance across the heavens, laugh at the moon, and sing to the stars until we meet again. 

Doug was a modest and 

hardworking man who 

didn’t like the limelight, 

even though his talents 

deserved it. He had an 

interest in people’s lives 

and motivations, and 

was an avid reader of 

psychology and musical 

biographies. He had 

a library of almost two 

thousand books. Rockwork 

was also an outlet for his creativity, and for a 

while he would trade customers a set of strings for 

a good rock. Later in life he became even more particular, 

and would go rock hounding after business 

hours looking for the right shapes and colours. He 

was exceptional at whatever he turned his hand to, 

however wood was his first love. Wood just seemed 

to conform to his will, and he made the most precise 

and challenging tasks look easy. Doug never had children, 

though he formed a close bond with Kenneth 

Wawryk, the son of a relationship he had in his mid 

twenties. That bond remained strong and important 

to both of them for the rest of Doug’s life. 

In 2007 he again changed locations, and opened a 

smaller shop on 6th St. in Nelson. Doug closed up 

the business in 2021, unfortunately leaving stringed 

instrument players in BC without his expert work 

and advice. Doug’s generosity and self-deprecating 

humour earned him lifelong friends and devoted 

customers. He was as true a friend as one could ever 

hope to find. 

Doug is predeceased by his parents Lyle and Arieda 

Thompson, brother Ken Thompson, and sister Donna 

Michaud. He will be greatly missed by his treasured 

niece Stacey Anderson (Travis) of Kamloops, and his 

many close friends in BC who loved him dearly. 

Betty Lorraine Porter 

Betty, aged 86 years, embraced 

with love and 

surrounded by 

family, passed 

away January 

14th 2019 in 

Trail, BC. Betty 

was born in 

Calgary, Alberta 

on November 

14th 

1936 and in 

the late 1930’s 

her family 

moved to Kaslo, 

BC where her 

father worked for P 

Burns Meat Co and later 

owned and operated Eric’s 

Meat Market which remained 

in the family for 85 years. Betty 

spent a brief period of her 

life in Vancouver where she 

studied business and worked 

in a bank. When Betty’s father 

passed away in 1955, 

Betty returned to her peacefully 

serene home town of 

Kaslo. Upon her return, she 

met the love of her life, Andy 

Porter, who came to run the 

meat market in 1956. Andy 

and Betty married in 1957, 

together they raised their 

family while operating Eric’s 

Meat Market for 40 years. 

In 2018 Andy and Betty left 

Kaslo to move to Trail, BC. 

They lived the rest of their 

years in Rosewood Village. 

Betty was predeceased by 

her beloved husband Andy 

in 2019 leaving her broken 

hearted. Betty was very close 

with her children, her most 

cherished moments were 

making memories with her 

family. She was thankful to 

have her daughter live just up 

the road and looked forward 

to her daily visits since moving 

to Rosewood. This past 

year Betty had many memories 

with her friends and family. 

She spent time this summer 

with Doug and Denise 

back in Kaslo. She took a road 

trip out to Penticton to visit

was a very loved woman. She 

was a quiet and reserved little 

lady who had a very kind 

heart. She was very thoughtful 

and caring, a gentle soul 

who will be greatly missed. 

Left to mourn her loss are her 

son Doug (Denise), daughter

Erik (Morgan) (Tate), 

Luke (Alexa); step-granddaughters 

Jennifer, Shauna
