PPieAeronefs (Magpie Planes)is a company in the French<br />
Swiss Alps. The purpose of the company is to build electric<br />
airplanes and the company’s first product is the UR<br />
1, an electric racing plane. This plane will participate in<br />
airraces in the newly established Air Race-E class. Here<br />
the planes are usually conventional CASSUTT III racing<br />
aircraft, which are converted to e-<strong>flight</strong>. But the UR 1 is a<br />
completely new development.<br />
When visiting La Saraz, the editor of the e-<strong>flight</strong>-journal,<br />
Willi Tacke, asked Marc Umbricht why this should be<br />
more promising and what else the company is planning.<br />
eFlight<strong>Journal</strong> (eFJ): The location here in a valley near<br />
La Sarraz is rather unusual for an aircraft manufacturer.<br />
How did you get here?<br />
Marc Umbricht: The building here is a former laundry.<br />
We have a lot of space here and different rooms for the<br />
various processes such as laminating or sawing.<br />
(eFJ): From airline pilot to aircraft production seems to<br />
be a long way. How does a newly trained airline pilot end<br />
up becoming an aircraft manufacturer?<br />
Marc Umbricht: After my employer Darwin went bankrupt,<br />
I did my bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering<br />
at the University of Worcester in the USA. When I re-<br />
