MANAGER’S NOTES
“NO DOUBT, THE PRIZE OF A FIFTH ROUND TELEVISED TIE AGAINST
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR WILL BE TALKED ABOUT EXTENSIVELY BUT
OUR FOCUS, LIKE WREXHAM’S, WILL BE ON THIS FIXTURE”
Tonight will be my
first taste of FA
Cup action at
Bramall Lane and knowing
what is at stake we should
be in for an interesting
game.
No doubt, the prize of
a fifth round televised tie
against Tottenham Hotspur
will be talked about
extensively but our focus,
like Wrexham’s, will be on
this fixture and plotting a
path to a victory at the final
whistle.
The game at the
Racecourse ground was
tough, we knew it would
be, but we managed to
show a resilience to keep
us in the competition.
The mentality of the
whole group is what I was
probably most proud of in
the adversity, that attitude
has helped us win games
this season and will be
vital tonight and for the
remainder of the campaign.
It was evident on
Saturday too, the draw at
Rotherham takes us a point
closer to where we want
to be and we’ll take that,
there were lots of positives.
We knew we wouldn’t get
it all our own way and how
they would approach the
game and, to be honest
we’ve played a lot worse
than that and won games
this season.
I thought we got into so
many promising positions,
especially first half, but
didn’t manage to cause
problems for the home
goalkeeper. In the second
half we had big chances
and were dominant with
the ball and territory, but
the last bit was missing.
Overall, it was a strong
performance,
and we praised
the players
afterwards.
Tonight, is the
first of three
home fixtures
in eight days
and we always
see games
here as great
opportunities
to win or pick
up points. We’ve
worked since the weekend
on an approach that we
hope is a success and
then we quickly move on
to thinking about Swansea
and Middlesbrough.
Enjoy the game.
JOHN READY TO DO BATTLE AGAIN
United defender
John Egan is ready
to do battle again,
and he’s expecting
another tough showdown
as Wrexham visit Bramall
Lane for tonight’s fourth
round replay.
The Republic of Ireland
international, not for the
first time this season,
was United’s last gasp
hero when he netted in
stoppage time to earn
10-man Blades a replay
following a thrilling 3-3
draw at the Racecourse
Ground.
John explained United’s
character was again on
show in Wales, and he’s
looking forward to another
stern examination from
PLAYER FOCUS
Phil Parkinson’s National
League front runners at the
Lane tonight.
He said: “It’s a game we’ll
look forward to. We want
to try and win every game
and the replay is exactly
the same, we’ll want to win
that too.
“Wrexham are in the
National League, but they
aren’t a National League
side. They have a lot of
players who are capable
of playing higher up the
leagues.
“They were well backed
by a lively crowd, we had
some stick all game at the
Racecourse, so it was good
to nip in at the back stick in
the last minute and give a
little bit back.
“We found ourselves
2-1 down but got back into
the game. We then had
a man sent off and we’re
then behind again with 10
minutes to go. We then
showed spirit and came
back to draw. It’s the FA
Cup, it was a tough game,
Wrexham are going well,
so we knew it would be
tough. Hopefully at home
we can play better and get
the win.”
The original clash
brought great acclaim
for both sides in what
was a traditional FA Cup
showdown which swayed
one way and another.
John was expecting a
tight contest and knows
United will have to be on
guard again tonight, with
Tottenham awaiting the
winners in the next round.
He added: “They have
some good players, and
we knew it was going to
be tough. They are top of
their league, and I expect
they’ll be playing league
football next season, so it
was good to come away
with a result.
“It was a good game.
They gave it everything,
we gave it everything, it’ll
be the same again I’m sure
and we’re looking forward
to the challenge.”
ISMAILA DELIGHTED TO BE INVOLVED
It has been a long
wait for Ismaila
Coulibaly, but the
midfielder is thrilled to
finally be involved in the
first team as he looks to
help extend United’s FA
Cup run.
After penning a deal
with the Blades following
a move from Norwegian
side Sarspong, the
22-year-old enjoyed a
two-year loan with sister
club Beerschot in Belgium,
before linking up with Paul
Heckingbottom’s side in
pre-season.
Injury delayed any early
potential introduction to
United’s first team, but
Ismaila finally made his
Blades bow from the bench
in the FA Cup against
Millwall, before enjoying
another cameo role as a
sub in the fourth round tie
at Wrexham
He told SUTV: “It was
nice (to play), especially
after a tough start. It is
always difficult when you
come to a new country and
a new team, then straight
after pre-season you get
injured.
“I am delighted to be
back and playing. It has
been difficult to see the
lads playing and winning
and I wasn’t involved. I
PLAYER FOCUS
▲ Ismaila Coulibaly has enjoyed his FA Cup experiences with the Blades
was happy to get back, my
family especially, it was a
great moment for me to
finally play.
“It was always the plan to
do two years in Belgium to
allow me to qualify to play
here. I was always thinking
to eventually be here
and compete for a place
and one day play Premier
League if possible. I had
a good experience with
Beerschot, I enjoyed it, and
it has helped me learn a lot
prior to coming here.”
The target now is to
try and force his way
into United’s highly
competitive starting 11,
and with a replay tonight
against the Red Dragons,
Ismaila is hoping for
another opportunity after
embracing the FA Cup
experience in United’s
last gasp 3-3 draw at the
Racecourse.
He added: “It was a
typical British football type
of game. I was expecting
that before. Before I
arrived in Sheffield, people
would talk about English
football and what it was
like. I’ve always watched
the Premier League, but
not much Championship
football, it can be different.
This game with Wrexham
was crazy, the atmosphere
was really good - I liked
it - from the bench I was
enjoying the game, and
then I was really happy to
come on.”
UP FOR THE
CUP… AND
THE CARP!
MIKE FIRTH, co-editor of Sheffield nostalgia magazine My Kind of
Town, tells of a local family’s trip to see United lift the FA Cup…
but football was only the beginning of their adventure...
When the Chambers family
clambered aboard a new-fangled
charabanc in 1925, bound for only
the third FA Cup final to be played at the
Empire Stadium, Wembley, they vowed to
celebrate in style if Sheffield United were
to win the trophy for a fourth time.
▲ Andy Chambers carries on the family traditions
of supporting the Blades and catching fish
▲ Andy’s late dad, Ed, with his wife Edith. Ed’s role on
the trip to the FA Cup final was to dig for worms
They weren’t planning to dive into the
Trafalgar Square fountain or even go on
a monster pub crawl around the capital.
What they had promised themselves,
however, was a month-long celebratory
angling excursion!
Dads, sons, daughters, brothers,
uncles, grandads and even great-grandad
Chambers squeezed into the open-top
vehicle alongside all manner of fishing
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WREXHAM
UTB 11
▲ United’s FA Cup winning side from 1925 ⊲ Fred Tunstall scored on the famous day at Wembley
rods, reels, line, hooks and nets. They all
headed down the old A1 road with hopes
of lifting the silver cup... and some fish of
the same colour.
All the older family members had
informed their places of work in Sheffield
that the right result on Saturday 25th April,
would mean they shouldn’t be expected
back at work for four weeks or so.
They would be too busy toasting the
Blades’ success on the banks of the Nene,
Welland, Great Ouse, Welland and Trent!
Andy Chambers, who lives in Dronfield,
explained that when he was a child,
his father put him to bed at night with
anecdotes of 1925 – the great FA Cup final
victory against Cardiff City, followed by
the fishing adventure of a lifetime around
Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and
Nottinghamshire.
Explained Andy: “I grew up in Greenhill
with my mum and dad, Ed and Edith.
The family previously came from Olive
Grove and when my dad was a kid, his
neighbours were the Tunstalls. When
United beat Cardiff 1-0 in front of 97,000
spectators at Wembley, left-winger Fred
Tunstall scored the goal, and all my family
were there to see it.
“My dad was only five years old, but his
main role was yet to come on the second
part of the great adventure. He had been
taken along to get up early every morning
to go out to dig for worms for the rest of
the family to use as bait!
“He remembered things so well because
years later, as he tucked me in each night
when I was five or so, he would always
tell me stories about the cup final, but
especially about the places they fished,
the rivers and what they caught.”
They landed pike and eels at Kings
Lynn, carp and chub at Sutton Bridge,
roach, perch and gudgeon at Fosdyke,
bream at the 40ft Drain at Swineshead
and barbel at Newark.
Andy said that apart from all the family
members being staunch Blades, their
other passion had always been coarse
fishing. It’s a Chambers tradition he has
continued with... as well as supporting the
Blades, of course!
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
from the past between the Blades and our opponents…
SHEFFIELD UNITED 3-1 WREXHAM
TUESDAY 26th AUGUST 1997
The two sides had drawn 1-1 two
weeks previously at the
Racecourse Ground in the first leg
of this first round League Cup tie.
For the second leg at Bramall Lane,
as he did in Wales, Blades boss Nigel
Spackman fielded a strong side but that
didn’t prevent the Red Dragons from taking
a shock lead on 20 minutes after Dean
Spink’s effort deflected off Mark Patterson
and past a stranded Simon Tracey.
The goal came two minutes after United
wasted an excellent opportunity after
Dane Whitehouse saw his penalty saved
after Dave Brammer had swiped Vass
Borbokis in the box.
The visitors’ lead lasted seven minutes
when Whitehouse combined with Wayne
Quinn and the former drove the ball into
the box for Brian Deane to head home his
first goal in his second spell for the club.
United took the lead on 74 minutes
when a Deane cross caused havoc in the
Wrexham defence, leaving Whitehouse
ample time to pick his spot and volley
home. Within eight minutes the hosts
had netted a third goal and put the game
beyond Wrexham’s reach after Deane’s
flick-on was met by Jan Age Fjortoft
and the Norwegian magnificently lifted
the ball over Andy Marriott’s head and
into the net.
The hosts were handed a lifeline but, like
United, they squandered their opportunity
from the penalty spot after defender Carl
Tiler conceded a spot kick. Connolly
stepped up but Tracey made the save.
United defeated Watford (5-1 on
aggregate) in the next round before
bowing out 2-1 at Walsall in round three.
Without a win in six Division
1981 Three encounters, United
were sliding down the table under Martin
Peters and in need of a win to stop the
rot. Without a goal in five, United found
something in this home game against
Reading with goals from Steve Neville
and Bob Hatton earning a 2-0 win.
Long term though, it would prove futile
with United relegated at the end of
the season.
United were on a sixgame
unbeaten run in all
1998
competitions coming into this second
tier clash against Oxford United. The
Blades extended the run, and moved
into fourth place, thanks to a 1-0 win.
Bobby Ford netted his first ever goal for
the club, against the side which sold him
to Blades earlier in the campaign.
ON THIS DAY
UTB looks back into the archives to find out what
happened on this day in United’s history…
Having recorded two wins from
2021 the last three Premier League
games, United were enjoying perhaps
the best spell of what was a difficult top
flight season which ultimately ended in
relegation. Things were looking up again
in this game when an own goal from
Antonio Rudiger cancelled out Mason
Mount’s opener for Chelsea. United’s
hopes of a point were ended though
with a Jorginho penalty winning it for the
Blues.
The Blades earned the
South Yorkshire derby spoils
in this 5-0 Division Two demolition of
would go on to score 26 for the league
campaign, whilst Willie Hamilton and Billy
WHAT’S THE
STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor
DAVE BURKINSHAW features a Blades related photograph
from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
One of the popular
football images
captured, in the
post-war period especially,
was of players training
together, usually on their
home ground.
There exists a number of
such photographs featuring
various United players at
Bramall Lane and today’s
image is one taken in the
period 1955 to 1957.
The photograph shows
the old Bramall Lane end in
the background with part
of one of the old floodlight
pylons clearly visible.
Prior to the opening of the
Bramall Lane Stand in the
autumn of 1966, this end
of the ground was another
standing area with a
covered roof similar in style
to the one that covered
the Shoreham Street
Kop. If you look closely at
the roof itself there is an
advertisement for Kennings
on Leadmill Road. Kennings
was not only a garage
offering all the usual car
maintenance services, it
was the place to go for
your car washing according
to the advert!
Although the exact
date of this photograph
is unknown, looking at
the fine condition of the
playing service it seems
likely this may have been
taken during pre-season
training or during an early
season training session.
The kit worn by the four
players on view suggests it
may have been taken in the
summer of 1957 as the club
had moved towards shirts
without collars by then.
If there are any fans out
there who can offer a more
precise dating, I would
be grateful for any further
information.
Another clue to the date
of the photograph is the
identity of the four players
on view. The four players
from the left are Jim Iley,
Tommy Hoyland, Cliff
Mason and Ted Burgin.
Half-back Iley had made
his league debut for United
in December 1954 and
played his last game for
the club on 24th August
1957 before he was sold to
Tottenham Hotspur.
Next to him is Tommy
Hoyland, another half-back
who could also play inside
forward. Hoyland had been
with the club since 1949
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WREXHAM
UTB 15
making his league debut
the year after. Tommy left
United in October 1961
to join Bradford City and
later was the landlord of
the Sheldon not far from
the Lane, a one-time
popular pre-match drinking
establishment with United
fans. Tommy’s son, Jamie
also played for the Blades
in the early 1990s.
Next along the line from
Tommy is Cliff Mason.
Cliff was signed by the
Blades from Darlington
in the summer of 1955
and was a solid, reliable
full-back. He struggled to
command a regular place
in the first team due to
the fine performances of
Graham Shaw and Cec
Coldwell. He did, however,
play an effective role as an
emergency right-winger
during the Blades’ 1960-61
promotion season.
Completing the quartet
of players is goalkeeper
Ted Burgin. Ted had given
United great service
during the 1950s playing
281 league games, winning
England B caps and a callup
for the England 1954
World Cup squad. By the
time this photograph was
taken, Ted’s place in the
first-team was being taken
by future club legend
Alan Hodgkinson. Ted left
the Blades in December
1957 to join Doncaster
Rovers.
MEMORY LANE CLUB LAUNCH
A HUGE SUCCESS FOR TC
United’s ‘Memory Lane’
club is now up and running
following a successful
launch at Bramall Lane
recently.
Directed by Blades
ambassador Tony Currie,
the monthly gathering is
geared towards primarily
helping former players
who are suffering from the
effects of onset dementia
and other neurological
issues.
Currie welcomed a
number of guest speakers
including long-time
campaigner Dawn Astle,
who spoke passionately
about the work undertaken
in the 20 years following
the passing of her father,
the former West Brom and
England striker Jeff Astle.
Following the launch, the
invitational only gathering
will continue on a monthly
basis to help provide
UTB 29
support for former Blades
and their families.
TC said: “This, of course,
is just the start. We will
be organising monthly
meetings at Bramall Lane
aimed at helping those who
are living with neurological
issues. So many players
from my era are learning
to cope with some life
changing illnesses, and
I just want to try and help in
any way I can.”
EMERGENCY PROCEDURE:
In the event of any emergency you will hear a safety message
over the PA system. Remain where you are and listen carefully to
the announcement. Comply immediately if it affects your area.
Stewards, Police Officers and Officials will direct you to safe areas,
which may be through Exit Doors/Gates to the street or on to the
playing area. If you are disabled or feel unsafe in a large crowd,
remain where you are until stewards assist you. Remain calm
and do not move unless the announcement affects your area.
