then tons of great turns to follow the land, and ends above the
NANCIE BATTAGLIA
By Alex Kochon
While it hasn’t been a skier’s ideal winter in northeastern
New York, we’ll take what we can get. January saw
a few decent storms bring several inches of snow, followed
by a cold snap in early February that helped it stick around.
Cross-country ski centers across the region have been
grooming the same snow for weeks, balancing the fine line
between preserving old snow and creating the best ski conditions.
It’s a little like making lemonade out of lemons.
The good news is, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow,
signaling six more weeks of winter – so we’ve got time for
more snowfall – and local Nordic ski areas are generally operating
at full tilt with most of their terrain open.
Up in Lake Placid, the newly opened Scotts Cobble
Nordic Center is open seven days a week with 10 to 20 kilometers
of trails track set and groomed for classic or skating.
“Lights are up; night skiing is awesome,” said Brian
Delaney, who came up with the idea to resurrect the
Scotts Cobble ski center in the town of North Elba with his
wife, Karen.
The Delaneys own High Peaks Cyclery and have turned
Scotts Cobble into a fully featured local hotspot, complete
with a rental shop offering skis, snowshoes, and fat bikes,
a heated lodge with restrooms and showers, and a parttime
restaurant.
The trails are free for local residents and have already
attracted vast numbers of children for afterschool programs.
According to the Lake Placid News, over 100 kids ages 2 to 17
skied at Scotts Cobble on a Friday in late January, with several
dozen volunteers providing hot chocolate, teaching them to
ski, helping with equipment, and watching over the bonfire.
Wednesdays are Wing Night at Scott Cobble, with wings
and beverages from the restaurant and a roughly one-hour
wax clinic. Supporter pins are available for purchase at the
lodge or High Peaks Cyclery, with a suggested donation of $20
or more to support the trails and receive a free day of skiing:
scottscobblenordic.com.
If groomed trails aren’t your thing, backcountry skiing
and alpine touring can be accessed on the adjacent
Jackrabbit Trail, maintained by the Barkeater Trails Alliance:
betatrails.org.
Just east of Scotts Cobble off Route 73, Mt. Van
Hoevenberg had 50 kilometers of groomed trails for classic
and skate skiers, with 41 of 49 trails open for skiing as of
Feb. 8. In the last month, Van Ho hosted Nordic skiing and
biathlon events for the World University Games and Empire
State Winter Games, the Lake Placid Loppet is coming up on
Feb. 26: mtvanhoevenberg.com.
In Saranac Lake, the Dewey Mountain Recreation
Center reported having track set on most of its lower mountain
trails, and its groomed upper-mountain trails open with
good cover as well. Dewey offers groomed and ungroomed
trails, lighted night skiing, ski/snowshoe rentals for all skill
levels, and skiing is only $5 per day. deweymountain.com.
As of Feb. 6, the Lapland Lake XC Ski & Snowshoe
Center in Northville reported about 30 kilometers of trails
groomed for classic and skate skiers with “nice classic
track and corduroy.” Lapland Lake has family-friendly
lodging on site, a full-service ski shop with sales/rentals,
12K of wilderness snowshoe trails, and a junior tubing hill:
laplandlake.com.
The Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area in East Poestenkill
offers 35K of groomed trails with 10K for skate skiing, plus 15K
for snowshoeing and 5K for backcountry skiing. Pineridge
was closed on Feb. 8 following rain the night before but
they are looking forward to reopening soon for some nice
mid-winter and spring skiing: pineridgexc.com.
You can’t beat daily groomed trails at the above full-service
ski centers, a few areas offer free or close-to-free skiing.
snowshoe trails, weekly races, learn-to-ski programming,
and a restaurant/bar. As of Feb. 7, the trails are open but
check for conditions: facebook.com/brookhavenski.
Stony Pond
Scenic Trails between Minerva and Newcomb
Stony Pond, at an elevation of 2,077
feet, is a large scenic pond located
east of NY Route 28N about halfway
between Minerva and Newcomb,
and lies within the Vanderwhacker
Mountain Wild Forest section of the
Adirondack Park. There are three trails
that lead to the pond – one is fairly
short and the other two are of moderate
length and difficulty.
The two-mile trail from Route 28N
is a designated snowmobile trail, but I
have not seen any signs of actual snowmobile
use over my most recent two or
three visits, probably because it’s short
and somewhat of a dead end for them.
The trail has some good hills that can be
enjoyed by intermediate skiers – snowshoers
should find it easygoing.
At 0.3-mile from the start, a short
side-trail on the right leads down to
Twentyninth Pond. At the one-mile
mark, the trail passes below a sizable
beaver dam – you may want to work your
way up it to take a peek at the resultant
pond above the dam. Once you arrive at
Stony Pond, from a clearing you will see
Green Mountain to the east, the outlet
will be on your left, and a sharp right will
lead you to a lean-to that has a narrow
view of the pond. A picnic table, built in
2018 as an Eagle Scout project, can be
used but it is highly likely that you will
need to remove some snow before taking
advantage of its utility.
My first winter camping trip was
at Stony Pond. Back then, the lean-to
was situated closer to the edge of the
pond. The two-mile snowshoe or ski
with a large winter pack on your back is
only a minor obstacle. If you camp, the
east-facing lean-to should offer a sunrise
view, and, hopefully, the warmth
of the sun will inspire you to get out of
your toasty sleeping bag all ready for
what adventures the day might bring.
Whether you camp or just stop for a
break, always make sure that you don’t
leave any trash or belongings at the site
when it is time to leave so that others
can enjoy a clean campsite.
The Stony Pond Trail continues
south along or near the pond’s western
shore. In winter, it is much easier
to just head out onto the pond and pick
up the trail again at the south end of
the pond. The trail then makes a steep
climb before dropping to the shore of
the Sherman Ponds. A heads-up to skiers
– there may be some exposed rocks
near the bottom of the hill. You can then
walk or ski south across the ponds and
pick up the trail again that eventually
will take you to John Brannon Road in
Irishtown. Expect to drop 900 feet in elevation
over a distance of two miles – in
the right conditions, this can be quite a
thrill on skis. There may be some light
snowmobile use over this trail. You can
start at the Route 28N trailhead and
enjoy a through trip with a substantial
loss in elevation by spotting a car at the
Irishtown end and shuttling back up to
the Route 28N trailhead.
The Hewitt Pond Trail leaves the
lean-to area, crosses the outlet (probably
not advisable in winter), and follows
the north shore for a while before heading
north toward Barnes and Hewitt
ponds. Again, in winter, it will be easier
to go across the pond surface to the
pond’s northeast arm before picking up
the trail again. In this northeast arm, I
once had the pleasure of observing a
beaver drag a branch from the shore and
disappear down a hole in the ice with it.
As you leave the pond, you may find
the going easier by staying a little west of
the trail and going across a beaver pond
that parallels the trail – you will miss the
start of the trail to Center Pond though,
if that happens to be on your agenda.
This 0.2-mile trail climbs fairly steeply
before dropping down to Center Pond
where you should really feel as if you are
“in the middle of nowhere.”
By Rich Macha
Continuing north on the Hewitt
Pond Trail, the route climbs for a while
before dropping 370 feet in half a mile
– another fun run on skis, although last
winter there was a bit too much blowdown
that interfered with a clean run
down. Barnes Pond looks like a moderately-sized
beaver pond with dead
trees sticking up from the snow-covered
ice. The trail may be difficult to follow
as it crosses over the pond’s inlet. It is
then another 1.1 miles to the shore of
Hewitt Pond where you can see private
camps and Hewitt Pond Mountain on
the opposite shore.
A year ago, I convinced a couple
of ski buddies, Jim and John, to ski to
Stony Pond from the Hewitt Road trailhead.
We found the early going to be
very laborious on skis as the trail pulled
away up a hill so as to avoid private
land. There was some blowdown to
step over so I cannot recommend that
section, except possibly to snowshoers
or the most intrepid of skiers.
You can combine trails around Stony
Pond based on your desires, and enjoy
a lightly used area of the Adirondack
Park while at it. Even a tour of the pond’s
edges can reveal wonders. The ponds
usually have solid ice in mid-winter –
just remember that the ice will be thin
near inlets and outlets so stay well clear
of those areas.
Races are opening up registration and
it’s time to start planning for your
spring season. While you increase the
miles, remember to be careful about ramping
up the miles too quickly. Doing too
much too fast increases your chances of an
injury. The general rule about increasing
mileage is to increase no more than 10%
each week. Sign up for a spring 5K, run or
walk training challenge, and consider a
longer goal of a 10K, half or marathon
Join the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on
Saturday, Feb. 25 for the 35th annual CF
Climb in the tallest building in Albany, the
as an individual, first responder, or as part
of a four-person relay team. First responders
can climb as an individual or as a relay team
of four people – wearing full gear. This year,
CF is offering a Kids Climb, where children
ages five to 12 are welcome to participate in
a quarter of the tower!
Whether climbing to improve your time
or to simply cross the finish line for a great
cause, this event is a great way to spend the
morning with friends, family or coworkers,
while supporting people with cystic fibrosis.
A minimum fundraising amount of $150 per
person or $65 for the Kids Climb is required.
START OF THE RUN 4 YOUR LIFE 5K IN
SCHENECTADY’S CENTRAL PARK, 2022.
Run 4 Your Life 5K is the leading
source of awareness and fundraising
for the Schenectady Firefighters Cancer
Foundation. In 2012 a group of Schenectady
Firefighters banded together to address a
rapidly growing problem in the community.
Firefighters are up to 200% more likely
to contract a dozen forms of cancer as a
result of exposure to carcinogens during the
course of their duties. The foundation was
formed with the intent to address this problem
through education and advocacy, and
to lend financial assistance to those afflicted
with the terrible disease.
The race now brings in over $30,000
annually that goes directly to the mission. In
2022, 700 runners participated and an additional
350 people attended ChowderFest.
Foundation members will be on hand to
raise awareness of this worthwhile cause.
Registration includes entry to the race,
ChowderFest, long-sleeve race shirt, a surprise
gift, and swag from race sponsors.
Maybe you’ve been running all winter
and you’re ready for a challenge this spring?
Go the distance with a spring half marathon.
The 43rd annual Doc Lopez Run for
Health in Elizabethtown is on Sunday, April
30. The event features a half marathon and
new 5K trail run/walk. It’s a great way to
celebrate springtime in the Adirondacks
and support the health and wellbeing of the
community. Runners can enjoy breathtaking
views along the challenging half marathon
route from Keene Valley to Elizabethtown,
or take on a trail loop along the 5K course.
Dr. Robert “Doc” Lopez, a veterinarian
and accomplished runner who completed
60 marathons by age 60, started the tradition
when he carried the 1980 Winter Olympics
torch up and over Adirondack “hills” – this
became the foundation for this beloved local
event. Sue Allott, race director and daughter
of Doc, says “The race has always been
for the hardy, especially in years past when
it was held in March and it could be below
freezing. The half marathon course will still
be a challenge, with the two-mile climb up
Spruce Hill, but the later date makes it ideal
for those training for a late spring or early
summer marathon.”
The community support, aid stations, and
complementary chili have long been runner
favorites. The race benefits the University of
Vermont Health Network - Elizabethtown
Community Hospital. For more info, visit:
To Queer Lake
Cascade Lake
near Eagle Bay
A Fine Hike that Deserves its Spotlight
To Big Moose
P
To Eagle Bay
By Bill Ingersoll
Some hikes are so familiar to me that
I probably revisit them almost every
year without intending to do so. These
are places that are hardly obscure and offthe-map,
but dependable stalwarts that
provide a guaranteed experience even when
I’m not in the mood for something more
extensive.
Cascade Lake near Eagle Bay is high on
that list. It’s rare that I pass the trailhead
without seeing cars parked there, and the
area is so well known that the hike might
seem like “plain vanilla” for people who are
searching for something more unique.
But to be honest, Cascade Lake is a fine
hike that deserves its spotlight. While it is a
key part of the Pigeon Lake Wilderness, its
history as a girls’ camp in the 20th century
– complete with equestrian trails and tennis
courts – makes the technical difficulty of
following this trail system much easier than
the typical wilderness trail system. This one
seems to suit all comers.
And in the winter, the snow conditions
can be quite good. Big Moose Road,
from which the trail begins, can be a busy
place at this time of year, relatively speaking.
Snowmobiles zip up and down the
road, while skiers and snowshoers gravitate
toward the hiking trails leading laterally into
the woods. In fact, Cascade is simply the first
trail option one encounters along the drive
northwest from Eagle Bay; if you like what
you see here, then by all means come back
for more. This adventure is merely the tip of
a very wild iceberg.
Getting There – The trailhead for
Cascade Lake is located on Big Moose Road,
about 1.3 miles from NY Route 28 in Eagle
Bay. After leaving the hamlet, Big Moose
Road winds uphill past the old trailhead
(located on the inside of a hairpin turn) to
reach the preferred parking area, which is
prominently marked by a DEC sign.
The Trail – From the parking area, the
marked trail begins essentially as a connector
parallel to Big Moose Road for 0.3-mile.
It winds gently upward but descends sharply
to a junction, where you turn hard left at the
bottom of the slope. Snowshoers will wonder
what all the fuss is about, but novice
skiers may be intimidated by the hill-turn
combination. (The way right leads to the old
trailhead, which was closed due to traffic
safety concerns.)
Turning left, you are now following what
was once the main access road to the summer
camp. As you walk along the initial level
stretch, you will notice the flank of Cascade
Mountain rising to your right. The road
soon makes a steady, gradual descent that
delights skiers, and at the one-mile mark,
you come to a junction where the loop trail
around the lake comes in on the right.
The main road curves down to the left
and passes a spring, the overflow of which
drains down the road. Spruce and balsam
become more common, and after passing
two clearings on the right – site of the old
camp headquarters – you come to the lake’s
outlet, which you cross on a bridge made
of boards and iron rails. Upstream, on your
right, are the remains of a wooden fish barrier
dam.
At a junction just past the outlet, a redmarked
trail comes in on the left, 1.3 miles
from the trailhead. This is the link trail that
leads to Chain Ponds and Queer Lake, so
continue on the main trail to the right. The
lake soon appears to the right. At 1.8 miles
you reach a clearing on the right that is a
favorite stopping place, and one of the best
places to view Cascade Lake. This is a campsite
sheltered by tall pines and hemlocks.
The area has seen a lot of use, but it remains
attractive.
The trail narrows beyond this point and
continues through an open area where the
remains of an old wall stand off to the left.
Stonework occasionally lines the old roadway
or appears in the nearby woods.
There is a second side trail to another
shoreline campsite, as well as more
remains of the girls’ camp. One of the
more unusual sites, the overgrown
surface of the former tennis court,
lies off to the right of the trail, but it
will probably be unremarkable in the
winter.
The trail narrows considerably
as it makes its one close approach
to the shoreline, way at the far east
end of the lake. A few minutes later
you will need to watch closely for
the marked detour that veers left
of the old bridle trail. The original
route continued straight, sticking
to the old roadway, but it was
abandoned some years ago due
to boggy conditions (although
skiers sometimes continue to ski
through, since they are less likely
to be bothered by the wetness
when everything is frozen). The
red-marked detour is a narrow
footpath that hugs the hillside
and crosses a footbridge before
rejoining the bridle path in a
spruce-and-balsam forest.
At three miles you reach
an open area with a bridge
across another inlet. Just out
of sight up the inlet, to the left, is the pretty,
25-foot waterfall from which the lake gets its
name. If you have come this far, it would be
absurd not to make the short detour over to
see the cascade, even though in mid-winter
is likely just to be a column of ice. The wellworn
streambank is a favorite lunch stop.
The trail is at its remotest point at the
waterfall. Beyond, it promptly begins to
turn back toward the south shore of Cascade
Lake. This section is windy and hilly compared
to the north shore – and not to mention
further from the lake as well. There
are no campsites, and no opportunities to
view the lake without taking a brief off-trail
detour. Nevertheless, it continues to follow
an obvious roadway. At 4.8 miles you return
to the junction near the county line where
the trail splits. Continuing left will return you
in one-mile (5.8 overall) back to the trailhead.
Of course, a significant portion of this
route will be gently uphill.
AT AGE 91
IN 2012.
Selfless service. Words that perfectly describe
military personnel serving our country. They
put their lives on the line to protect our freedom,
prioritizing the needs of everyday Americans ahead
of their own. An unfortunate consequence of their
mission is that many return as veterans with injuries
and disabilities. Our wounded warriors who gave so
much to us now need our help in overcoming these
newfound challenges as they transition back to civilian
life. The psychological price they pay is devastating.
Veterans have a 50% higher risk of suicide compared to
civilians who have never served. Since 2001, more than
114,000 veterans have died by suicide, and 22 is a commonly
known number among veterans as the average number
of veteran suicides per day.
Selfless devotion. Any human lucky enough to experience
the love and loyalty of a dog knows exactly what I’m saying
without me saying another word. Our four-legged companions
just know things and their presence makes a profound
difference in their humans’ lives. I would say military veterans
and dogs, especially service dogs, are a partnership that just
makes sense. Service dogs provide unconditional support for
veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and
other psychological issues that might spiral them into depression
or suicidal thoughts. Sadly, less than 5% of military vets
who would benefit from trained service dog companionship
are able to have one due to the astronomical expense associated
with being matched with a dog. Specialized training for a
service dog can exceed $50,000 and Veterans Administration
insurance generally does not cover the cost.
Jimmy Thomas, a 61-year-old United States Army veteran
who grew up in Ballston Spa, has embraced the call to selfless
service throughout his life. Jimmy enlisted in the U.S.
Army at age 18 in 1979 and served as a military police officer
based in Germany. He is a father of five and worked as
a teacher and coach at both Galway and Mohonasen high
schools, stepping up to help troubled teens who had experienced
trauma. Jimmy himself struggled with stress-induced
seizures and other medical issues. A doctor at the Stratton
VA Medical Center in Albany recommended a service dog. In
2018, Jimmy received his golden retriever, Boots, through the
Mountains to Miracles Veterans Foundation, a not-for-profit
group in Montgomery County that assists veterans.
Not all dogs can sense oncoming medical events such
as seizures. It is an innate ability they are born with. Boots
was one of those dogs that could, and he instantly formed an
inseparable bond with Jimmy. After Boots was matched with
Jimmy, he was then trained through the Woofs for Warriors
program based in Warren County, another not-for-profit
organization helping vets. When asked what is the greatest
gift Boots gave him Jimmy replied, “Boots reduced my stress
and could predict my seizures. He gave me my freedom back
and a return to normalcy.” Jimmy recognized how incredibly
fortunate he was to be paired up with Boots and follow
through with his training.
Jimmy wanted to pay it forward and make the dream
of service dog companionship a reality for fellow veterans.
During his frequent visits to the Stratton VA Medical Center
with Boots, he would see veterans with what he felt were
greater disabilities than his own. Vets were always sad when
he and Boots left. Jimmy knew how much Boots helped him
and wanted to help other veterans find a better tomorrow
with a service dog so he had an idea. Jimmy decided he would
travel, by kayak, from the town of Glenville in Schenectady
County, to Key West, Fla., and then return the 4,000 miles
to Glenville by bicycle, all to raise money to help veterans
overcome the financial obstacles of owning a service dog. He
called the idea “Doggie Paddle for Veterans.”
Jimmy is not a newbie to multiday, endurance fundraisers.
He previously completed a 3,500-mile cross-country bike
trip from Oregon to Albany in 2019 and paddled a canoe
the entire 444-mile length of the Susquehanna River from
Cooperstown to Maryland in 2021. Both journeys raised
money for Woofs for Warriors.
Tragically and unexpectedly, Doggie Paddle became
more poignant and emotional for Jimmy. Boots was diagnosed
with cancer, declined rapidly and died at only five
years old, just before the start of Jimmy’s paddling send-off.
Doggie Paddle for Veterans is dedicated to Boots’ memory.
Logistics for the trip were organized through the Glenville
Rotary Club. The Rotary helped get the word out, plan fundraising
events, and route stops. Jimmy was supported by a
schedule and people who knew where he was going to be.
“I knew where I had to be each night and could always find
people eager to help if plans changed.” The fundraiser was
supported by fellow Rotaries and non-profit organizations,
who all helped raise money and participated in networking
events along the way.
Jimmy departed on September 25, 2022 during the
Glenville Oktoberfest and paddled a stretch of the Mohawk,
down the Hudson River to New York Harbor, and entered the
New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway. Over the next few months,
he paddled the Intracoastal Waterway the rest of the way to
Florida. His paddle was not without peril. A ferry boat hit
Jimmy’s kayak and he was caught in the vessel’s wake in Cape
May, N.J; an alligator came off the shore and rammed his
boat in Homestead, Fla.; he battled four-foot waves during a
storm in Titusville, Fla.; and sharks surrounded him in Key
Largo. He also dealt with the aftermath hurricanes, including
massive runoff and extreme tides. I asked Jimmy about his
biggest challenge. He said, “It isn’t the physical challenge.
It’s the mental challenge, doing it by yourself. You quickly
find out what you’re made of when you are faced with unexpected
danger and have to rely on yourself and react. It’s the
isolation during the journey.”
Once he was out of the Keys, Jimmy’s bike route home
took him up Route A1A to Route 17 where he rode his bike
along the coast until he reached North Carolina, where he
veered slightly inland. Jimmy remarked, “I know the bike
route from Charleston well – I’ve ridden it several times
before.” Jimmy returned to Glenville, on February 4, 2023,
on an absolutely frigid winter day. I spoke with him the night
before the final leg of his journey and asked him how he felt
about riding his bike in extreme sub-zero temperatures. He
didn’t seem phased. He said, “I’ve ridden longer distances
with temperatures in the 20s. So, I’m not worried about a
shorter stretch below zero. I’ll be fine!”
Veterans can start requesting services upon Jimmy’s
return through the Doggie Paddle website, at which point the
Doggie Paddle for Veterans team can see how much money
has been raised and properly budget for it. But the end of
his physical journey does not mark the end of fundraising
efforts. “As for money, we always need more. But there’s a
lot of different ways to donate, it doesn’t always have to be
money,” Jimmy said. “Whatever people can think of, they can
donate. For example, people have donated dogs, veterinarians
have donated their time for veterans who have a service
dog, and even pet store donations make a difference. If
someone offered to donate service dog training, that would
be considerable non-monetary donation understanding the
expense and time commitment involved.”
I asked Jimmy what was next and he said his big hope is
to have Doggie Paddle fundraising events in Rotaries across
the country. He’s hoping they see how helping veterans in
need pair with service dogs makes communities stronger.
He’s also looking forward to planning smaller, community,
family-oriented events. Jimmy will be receiving a new service
dog this spring. “Boots was an amazing dog. He made such a
difference in my life. I could live again. I want other veterans
to know what that feels like.”
McCauley Mountain, nestled in the central Adirondacks,
is big mountain family fun with a small mountain attitude,
with short lift lines, and low prices. From long cruisers to
bumps and glades, to black diamond challenges, they have 21
the mountain after watching the sunset from the summit.
They’ve also created top notch learning programs, weekly
programs and kids’ camps. All trails funnel back to the base
area so it’s family-friendly for their kids to ski or ride. Things
to do include their Peak Music Series; STRIDE 100K Vertical
Challenge on Feb. 27; Wounded Warrior Snowfest on March
5; and STRIDE’s Great Race (adaptive) and Spring Fling with
cardboard box derby, fun races for the kiddos, and the annual
pond skimming contest on March 18. Go to: jiminypeak.com.
Catamount Mountain Resort straddles the NY/MA
border, with varied terrain for skiers and riders of all levels.
They offer eight lifts, 44 trails, snowmaking, night skiing
begin running on Presidents weekend! Upcoming events
include Catamount’s free Neon Lights Laser Show set to
music in a festive party atmosphere with night skiing on
You’ll feel like you’re “running on air” with eight gears capable
of tackling tough climbs, it suits athletes and recreational riders.
folding-steering column for easy transport – and has the widest
gear range of any bike.
Over 250 high schools, colleges & universities use the ElliptiGO as
a training tool for their cross-country running teams. Low impact
For those of you up for a test of will and speed – or for
a fun challenge! – Mt. Van Hoevenberg is hosting the Lake
Placid Loppet, a series of classic and skate races on Saturday,
Feb. 26. Headlining the event is the historic 50K Loppet on a
slightly modified version of the 1980 Winter Olympic course,
making it one of the most challenging citizen races in the
world – with 1,120 meters of climbing. If you’re up for one
lap rather than two on that course, the 25K Kort Loppet is
another long-distance option that morning – with 560 meters
of elevation gain.
If you’d like to do the Loppet on a shorter, flatter
course, they have 12.5K, 6.25K and 3K Citizen’s Races in
early afternoon – and all ages and abilities are welcome! A
post-race celebration follows, with live music and a BBQ:
Several other Nordic ski races and recreational gatherings
are on the docket this month, including the Winona
Forest Tourathon with 12.5K, 25K and 50K classic on
Feb. 25 in Mannsville; Glenville Hills Classic 10K on Feb. 12
in Glenville; Shenendehowa Nordic Classic 4.5K & 7.5K in
Hadley on Feb. 18; Great Sacandaga Mini-Marathon on Feb.
19 in Hadley; and Mid-Atlantic Bill Koch Youth Ski League
Festival from Feb. 24-26 in Old Forge. Most are sponsored by
NYSSRA Nordic: nyssranordic.org. These events welcome all
ages and abilities, from novice to expert, for fun, fitness and
camaraderie: skireg.com.
