Question marks (?)
End sentences that ask a question
For example:
Why were you late to school today?
Note: Questions often start with wh words—
what, when, where, which, who, why.
Quotation marks (inverted commas) (‘’)
Used to enclose quoted speech or thoughts. Single
or double quotation marks are acceptable but must
be used consistently.
For example:
Semicolons (;)
‘Please don’t tease your sister’, Mum
pleaded.
Note: Quoted text must start with a capital
letter on a new line unless the same speaker is
continuing.
Used to indicate a pause between two connecting
statements
When reading, a semicolon indicates a slightly
longer pause than a comma but not as long as a full
stop.
Prim-Ed Publications
Low resolution display copy
For example:
That is your jumper; this one is mine.
Note: A full stop could also be used but
because the statements are linked, a semicolon
is usually used.
