Verbs Words that cause confusion seen/saw For example: The children saw their friends coming. We have seen many people at the show. A crowd was seen waiting for the train. Some verb contractions are confusing. have/of For example: He should have returned the book. She could have done better. I could have been hurt. Note: When the auxiliary verb have is contracted in would’ve, could’ve and should’ve the end sounds like of (that is: would of, could of, and should of), but this is incorrect and should never be used. There are other words which are similar, including: must have, might have, will have and won’t have. Verbs Some verbs have different meanings. borrow/lend For example: May I please borrow your pen? Yes, I will lend it to you. Note: You borrow something from someone and lend something to someone. teach/learn For example: used/used to For example: I will teach you to drive. I am sure you will learn quickly. The painter used a wide brush. We used to travel to the beach every weekend. Note: Used is the past tense of the verb use. Used to means something done previously.
