We are already heading to the final month of the 1 st quarter. The weeks sure go by fast. This is my 2 nd
year as President and I am working with some new board members. They are all very capable and fun
to work with. Most importantly, they are dedicated to making all members' club experiences enjoyable.
A big thank you goes out to Craig D. for stepping up and calling out the raffle. Mike, our long time
raffle master, was under the weather and did not make the meeting. Craig did a fantastic job filling in
for Mike. I also want to thank my wife, Stephanie, for selling raffle tickets. This is her second year
handling this duty. Our ticket sales continue to be good and this helps fund club activities. Thanks to
all who purchase tickets and bring raffle prizes every month!
Death
Our hearts are heavy after hearing about the death of our friend Vickie Garrison who
passed away on Monday after a long-standing fight with cancer. Skip and Vickie would
have celebrated 50 years of marriage this year and I know the loss of a spouse is
unimaginable. Please keep the Garrison’s in your prayers.
We also received sad news of the Marine’s son who passed away last month. She asked
me to express with you their feelings of overwhelming gratitude for the loving friends
and family who provided food, warm thoughtful cards, fellowship and prayers. They are
taking it a day at a time and sometimes even moment by moment but have joined a
bereavement support group who are helping them mend their broken hearts. She said
“I feel our son is now healthy, happy, and in the loving arms of God watching over us as
our guardian angel”.
Surgery/Procedure Update
Kelley Ashley caught Covid and that is why she is not at the meeting tonight. She
stayed home to get well enough for her upcoming surgery in March. After her ablation
procedure a month ago, her throat was damaged during the procedure and she has a
nodule/ulcer on her throat that needs to be removed.
Health Update
Doctors are running tests on our friend Jody Webb and are trying to rule out any
neurological issues.
Under the Weather
Mike Lebda has been feeling a bit punk for the past few days and is coughing and
feeling a bit weak.
Mike Henenfent also didn’t make the meeting for similar reasons.
Charlie Fosnaugh must have been in the same boat because he also didn’t make the
meeting. (No, I was just babysitting that night.)
Vacation News
Lori Dukes is not at the meeting either because she is in Israel and Rome with Cross City
Church. She called me on Wednesday and told me she is also being baptized in the
Jordan River while she is there. She also told me she won another Princess Cruise (I
guess she must gamble a lot) and is going on a 16-day cruise to Hawaii with her mom in
August.
Upcoming Trip
A large group of CVC friends and family are heading to Alaska on a Princess Cruise in
late July/August. We are even going with our very own cruise director named Charlie
Exciting News
We (aka the Sons’) purchased a mid-engine Corvette last month and we couldn’t be
happier. We got lucky and someone returned one they purchased with only 1300 miles
on it. Now I have to get creative on packing if for overnight runs.
Jasmine Luna purchased a beautiful Yellow C6 Corvette and can’t wait to take it on a
run. You go Girl!
Harlan & Brenda went to Las Vegas for a few days and he got to go to a performance
race track and drive a C8 Corvette @ 180 mph around a track.
Mike Percy also purchased a 2015 Yellow Corvette and is glad to finally be in the club
legitimately.
Well we have gotten a few events under our belt for the 2023-year with more on the
way. For those who may have missed them, we had a movie night in January (A Man
called Otto). In February there was a Valentine’s Day brunch at Lazy Dog Restaurant
and a Super Bowl party at Mike and Marylou Lebda’s house. Both events had good
turnouts and lots of good food. Thank you to everyone who made those events
possible. Up next is the Corvettes of Bakersfield Gambler’s Classic run. We have ten
cars signed up and hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will have an easy
drive. Following that we have the Webber Car Show (March 11) in Sanger and Roger
Rocka’s Dinner Theater (March 24). We have two events on the calendar for April
VICKIE GARRISON, MARCH 20, 1948 - FEBRUARY 14, 2023
Our dear Vickie Garrison passed away on February 14, 2023 at the age of 74. Vickie
leaves behind Skip her husband of nearly 50 years, her son Matthew and his wife
Kayce and son Josh.
During the pandemic we only got to see Skip and Vickie a couple of times meeting
at Casa de Fruta to get sandwiches, visiting beneath the trees at a safe distance. In
early 2020 Vickie was anxious about an upcoming doctor appointment, it was after
that appointment that Skip and Vickie’s journey to beat her cancer began. Vickie
had surgery, radiation and chemo and was declared cancer free but with that came
two very difficult years of fighting to regain her health.
Another surgery last summer and an infection in the Fall lead them to hospital and then to Rehab. Skip
spent every day from morning until night with Vickie encouraging and supporting her. An outbreak of
Covid, a transfer to the Covid Unit and Vickie’s health took a turn. Confusion and the inability to
communicate followed and we were so concerned but Vickie rallied and improved enough to be transferred
home right before Christmas to everyone’s delight.
At home Skip was Vickie’s main caregiver, with PT, OT and a nurse coming in a couple times a week. Vickie
was improving and was excited about making enough progress to get out and about in her wheelchair. And
then her health took a turn. She had to be transported to the hospital on Monday February 13th and she
passed away in the early morning February 14 th . Her little body was tired. Our only consolation is that she
is now at peace and not in the constant pain she has had to endure.
Vickie was the inspiration behind what we called Vickie-isms and always teased Skip that he should write
a book. She was fun and so funny and didn’t know it and had an infectious laugh and brought joy to all
around her. We shared so many fun times and adventures together and I will miss her dearly.
She and Skip joined us on as many out of town runs as they could, almost every President’s Run and every
trip to Laughlin. While in Laughlin Vickie’s favorite past time was slot machines and she was lucky! Vickie
loved to read, loved watching golf, collecting American Girl paper dolls, loved going to the movies and
watching Hallmark movies on TV. Her favorite color is Purple.
She loved her sons, her daughter-in-law, her grand pups and Skip. She enjoyed her friends and loved
laughing and having a good time. She will be missed by her friends and family.
Skip was along on every step of her journey and has been her biggest supporter and caregiver. He is a Hero.
Vickie was the best sister-in-law and friend to me, she was so welcoming when I joined the family, we had
a great time at family gatherings, we leaned on each other through the loss of our mothers, our mother-inlaw
and other relatives. I will miss her so much.
Thank you for kind words, cards, texts and emails of support to Skip, Keith and myself. If you knew Vickie
you know she would not want us to be sad for her but instead would want us to enjoy every minute we
have together. And so, we will celebrate Vickie’s life and remember the good times we had laughing
together.
Rest in Peace, Dear Vickie.
Debbie and Keith Garrison
