COMMUNITY NEWS
Hooray for a
community bank
It is refreshing to learn that staff at
Nationwide Building Society in Truro
possess a big community heart - In
fact the whole ethos of the Society
has this community engrained within
its culture.
I spoke to Paula (senior branch manager) and
Francesca (community liaison officer) and learnt
that Nationwide stipulate - as part of their
recruitment process - all staff should commit
to working 2 voluntary days to a cause in
the community they work in that sit within
Nationwide’s vision.
Most of the staff use their days to help at Truro
Food Bank and as poverty is at its highest
and many people and their families are going
Staff at Nationwide Building Society in Truro
hungry the help is needed here the most at the
moment.
Well known banks have closed their doors over
the years but Nationwide still have 3 branches
in Cornwall; in Truro, Newquay and Penzance
thus giving the personal service that customers
really need.
Maybe Nationwide’s secret is their care for the
community their stores sit within. It is in giving
that we receive and maybe we should all take
heed in Nationwide’s philanthropist philosophy.
After a very successful delivery of the
project last year we’re going for it again
in 2023 and thanks to Safer Streets
funding we’re going to make it bigger
and better.
We’re going to hold 8 events instead of 6 and
improve the accommodation for the services
offering information, advice and guidance on
the day.
Aims:
• To bring fun football sessions to boys and
girls aged 5-15 in the estates in Truro
• To bring the community together through
• Inspire exercise and wellbeing underpinned
with a message of kindness and respect for
each other
• To have a meaningful event/activity to take
COMMUNITY NEWS
Getting a dementia
diagnosis means
getting the right
support
If you or someone close to you is
experiencing significant memory loss,
confusion or language difficulties,
it’s a good idea to visit your GP for an
assessment.
Getting a diagnosis of dementia can provide a
better understanding of the condition and what
to expect, and a timely diagnosis can help you
make important decisions about treatment,
support and care.
Symptoms can include:
Memory loss - asking the same question over
again, forgetting recent conversations or events
and names of people; struggling to recognise
people; taking longer to recall information.
Language and communication - difficulties
following a conversation or finding the right
word for something/
Mood changes: difficulty controlling emotion,
becoming unusually anxious, irritable, sad
or frightened, losing interest in things and
personality changes.
Behavioural changes: can include confusion,
difficulty concentrating, planning and
organising, struggling to make decisions,
solve problems or follow a series of steps
(such as cooking a meal).
A diagnosis can seem daunting but help is
available. Alzheimer’s Society has produced a
new symptom checker, developed with leading
clinicians, which can be printed off and taken to
the GP to help people explain their symptoms
and get the support they need.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Becoming a
mental first aider
Being a mental health first aider, like a
physical first aid course, is open to
anyone. Cornwall Council has an
ongoing project called ‘towards zero
suicides’; and part of this, I believe, is
helping to provide free online training to
become a mental health first aider.
The course involves learning about different
types of mental health, how symptoms can
show, what to look out for, and how to support
both them and yourself. A mental health first
aider is not a counsellor: we offer support, not
treatment, and can look out for signs of people
struggling with their mental health. We provide
information on professional services, make
phone calls or go to appointments.
I completed my training as a student during
lockdown with Mental Health First Aid England
and since I was living in Cornwall, I had only
to pay for the textbook, making it far more
affordable. I also went on to do a Suicide First
Aid course, and am part of the orange button
scheme which provides an easy way for people
to see that I’m suicide first aid trained.
I feel that being a mental health and suicide
first aider is extremely important; I have known
many people with a variety of mental health
conditions, and at times (before my training)
I have not known what to do. Having the
reassurance of knowing what steps to take and
where to direct people helps me to look after
both myself and others. I’ve attached some
links that are useful for anyone who is
interested in getting involved. If needing
support for their own or others mental health,
a few contacts are:
There are other charities and helplines that
can be used, some focusing on particular
illnesses, and these can be found by searching
online.
Three Rivers
Furniture, Truro –
Why shop
anywhere else?
When you’re looking for furniture, it’s
not an easy task! You really need to
speak to someone who knows what
they’re talking about and get some
advice especially if you are from an older
generation.
Three Rivers Furniture is based in the centre of Truro
open Monday - Saturday 9am - 5pm but can be open
by appointments only. Here you will find a company
run by Matthew, his wife Alison and son Jono who
sim to give exceptional customer service. Their
testimonials speak for themselves.
Mr Marks said, “We really can’t speak highly enough
of the service we received from Matthew. There
really is no need to shop around. The quality and
price are second to none, only surpassed by the
customer care. If that’s not enough the delivery
service is extremely prompt and efficient. We have
purchased on numerous occasions and will always
make this our first port of call when looking for
furniture”
This is one of many of glowing reports. Why not
pop into the showroom and see the vast range of
furniture on display and speak to Matthew who will
News from
Truro BID
Truro BID delivers events, projects and
services for Truro, Truro’s businesses &
everyone working in the city centre. They
are business led & not for profit.
At Truro BID we deliver various projects which
are over and above the services provided by
local authorities and statutory agencies.
Recently our small team has been doing a
number of projects to make the city centre
more welcoming, attractive and safer for
residents, visitors and those who work here.
Over five years ago we delivered Truro’s black
and copper Wayfinding Scheme which helps
visitors navigate all parts of the city. We now
maintain the scheme and to help promote
Truro’s indoor markets we recently worked with
Lemon Street Market, Pannier Market and
Freedom Signs on a new design for one side of
the existing wayfinding sign at Lemon St.
In January and February we managed graffiti
removal on behalf of Truro Safe who were
awarded Government Safer Streets 4 funding
for a number of interventions including painting
over graffiti. This came about as we’re part of
the Truro Safe Partnership, a working group
which includes Cornwall Council, We Are With
You, St Petrocs, the Police, Truro City Council
and the Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community
Safety Service.
Several external walls and fire exit doors of
business premises have been repainted by our
contractor. The areas have been treated with an
anti-graffiti coating and whilst this will not stop
future graffiti, it will make any future graffiti that
does happen easier to remove.
Each spring we fund and install the annual
colourful bunting to improve the appearance
of the city centre. As with last year we’ll be
arranging for bunting to go up before Easter at
various locations across the city. Once up, the
bunting will be fluttering in our great little city
until October so there will be plenty of time to
enjoy it whilst you’re out and about in Truro!
The Cornwall Shop Small Market, which
showcases locally created and curated wares
from independent traders, will be on Truro’s
Lemon Quay every month from March to
October. The Truro Antiques and Collectables
Market will take place twice a month on the
second Saturday and fourth Wednesday.
One of our biggest investments this year is
providing Truro with two dedicated City Centre
Wardens this spring. We’re delighted that
this BID funded resource will provide a rapid
response and deterrent against anti-social
behaviour and shoplifting to help keep Truro’s
streets feeling safer throughout the year. The
City Centre Wardens will complement the
excellent work already done by Truro’s
Anti-Social Behaviour Officer.
We support both these markets to help
generate new and additional customer
footfall into the city that will potentially benefit
many other resident businesses, including
hospitality. For dates of the outdoor market
see: www.visittruro.org.uk
Finally on behalf of Truro’s businesses, please
continue to support our city’s shops, eateries
and service businesses as much as you can.
We appreciate that it’s a difficult time for many.
However, you can support the high street by
shopping in person, getting a coffee whilst out,
having your haircut in Truro or using the local
legal, financial and property firms.
Truro businesses please feel free to contact us
on 01872 273 999.
Alun Jones, Truro BID Manager
We also deliver and support events throughout
the year. This year we’ll be continuing to
support two regular outdoor markets on
Lemon Quay by utilising our colourful gazebo’s.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Flourish as
your true
quiet self
If you consider yourself introverted,
sensitive or shy, then you will find
your people at Quiet Connections.
Meeting new people and going to new
places can feel daunting. So often it feels
like you need to try and push yourself to
match the louder, chattier people in the
room to be able to form connections and
let your voice be heard. But it shouldn’t
have to be that way.
Hayley Stanton and Stacie Clark, who lead
Quiet Connections, believe that there
should be more inclusion, fairness and
equal opportunities in society for quiet
people - and their regular Meet Ups are
one of the ways that they’re advocating for
this change.
“Quieter people should know that
whatever they may have felt or
experienced in the past, their
introversion and sensitivity are not flaws.
They’re enough just as they are. In fact,
quietness is something to be celebrated.”
Their Meet Ups gently connect ‘quieteers’
in a safe, relaxing space where it’s okay to
talk and it’s okay to be quiet too. The
community is one of understanding,
togetherness and belonging, growing
confidence, self-acceptance and
appreciation.
Weekly Meet Ups are free to attend, held
across Cornwall, from Truro to Liskeard
and Penzance. Volunteer opportunities are
also available. Find and join your nearest
Steven Webb -
departing Mayor
of Truro looks back
words by Stephen Webb
As my two years as your Mayor of Truro
come to a close, I thought I’d share some of
the special moments from the past through
photos.
The very first Mayor making, and I believe
the first one in Truro Cathedral. Despite not
being able to make contact with anyone
due to social distancing, my daughter the
Mayoress was still able to don me with the
chain afterwards. It felt heavier than I expected
and I soon realised that this responsibility
was something much deeper and more
meaningful than wearing a chain.
My first Mayor’s portrait
Truro - the city we love and cherish - has seen
many changes over time and will undoubtedly
continue to do so as the world around us
evolves.
We remain confident that no matter whatever
comes our way it will face any challenge with
optimism while making the most of every
situation. What an incredible place to represent.
You all play a role please don’t ever forget
that.
A wonderful cream tea in the museum on the Jubilee of
Queen Elizabeth II
It has been the best experience of my life,
yet never an easy one. It is important for any
public official to take their role seriously and
strive for progress. Even if I’m not sure that I
made any real difference in my two years as
mayor, many have assured me that I did - and
for that, I am most grateful.
I am truly thankful for all the moments of joy,
honour, and privilege that came with being
mayor - it has been an absolute pleasure!
Kind regards,
Appointing the new ASB officer Steven Lennon with the
support of Truro BID and Cornwall Council
Steven Webb - Mayor of Truro 2021 – 2023
LEGAL ADVICE
The Uncertainty
of Legal Costs
It’s no secret that unless you’re wealthy,
the average client in need of legal advice
has money firmly on their mind when
they first approach a high street law firm.
This concern begins with the initial consultation
and continues throughout the decision to instruct
a legal service provider in whatever capacity
commands it.
Tradition also shows that hourly billing is the standard
tariff in most matters; however, recent global market
surveys indicate that private and commercial clients
are long-tired of feeling left out in the cold when it
comes to their financial outlay and swift justice.
Much like any other, the legal industry is certainly
no exception to the rule that everything in life is
negotiable, which is precisely why Black Letter Law ®
operates a flexible payment approach, tailored legal
fees, transparent invoicing and clearly drafted client
contracts as standard.
While this would seem the bare minimum for any
service provider, there is no doubt that this ancient
and respected field can be found struggling to catch
up with 21st century culture and socio-economic
pricing.
It’s also important to remember that without their
clients, there would be no businesses, therefore by
supporting those who need it the most, a high street
law firm can soon become critical to the communitythey
serve.
One small way to take a big step towards certainty
is by providing free 30-minute consultations for all
clients, while another is the overriding objective to
honour and support diversity in the course of a law
firm’s daily affairs.
With those simple options considered, remember
that the next time you’re in need of legal peace of
mind, Black Letter Law ® is waiting for you in central
Truro, and with free 30-minute consultations and an
open mind, they’re here for you when you need a
sensitive ear and an understanding approach to law.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Truro City
Ranger’s Report
Toby Cogan and Anna Cormie
As we move into spring, the number
of flowers and insects we see
increases. While the majority of
pollinators come out later in the
year when it is warmer, a few species
begin to appear in March and April.
One such
pollinator is the
dark-edged
bee-fly
(Bombylius
major). The
bee-fly is
named for its
mimicry of
bees. By looking
like a bee, the
female bee-fly
is able to fly
close to solitary
bee nests (most bee-fly (Bombylius major)
often those of mining bees) and throw her
eggs at the entrance. Once the maggot has
hatched, it will crawl into the nest and eat the
solitary bee larvae inside. While the bee-fly
has a parasitic beginning, it is a valuable early
pollinator which begins to appear in March and
is best spotted in April. It can be seen hovering
above flowers while it uses its long proboscis to
collect nectar from flowers such as violets and
primroses.
One of the early flowers to appear, blackthorn
trees (Prunus spinosa) blossom with small white
flowers in March and April. This spiny shrubby
tree is dark brown in colour and can live for
up to 100 years. The white flowers, appearing
before the leaves, are a valuable source of
Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)
pollen and nectar for bees in the springtime.
Once the flowers have been pollinated, they
turn into small blue-black fruits which can be
used to make sloe gin but are also enjoyed
by birds in Autumn. Not only is blackthorn
valuable for wildlife, but it was also thought to
have been used to make the wands and staffs
of witches!
With spring, we also enter the bird breeding
season. The goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is at
the height of its nesting season in April. A very
small bird at only 5 or 6g (the weight of a 20p
coin!), the goldcrest (along with the firecrest)
lays and creates the smallest eggs and nests
among British and Irish birds. They can,
however, lay up to 12 eggs in a clutch!
Goldcrests can be identified by their strikingly
coloured crowns, orange in males and yellow
in females. This may be why its Latin name,
Regulus regulus, translates to Prince or Petty
King and is known as King of the Birds in
European folklore.
So look out for bee-flies buzzing around flowers
and solitary bee nests, beautiful white flowers
on spiky blackthorn trees, and dynasties of
goldcrests in meadows, woodlands and
gardens, and enjoy the new life sprouting
around you!
£1,300 on their energy bills this
winter through the Energy Price
Guarantee and Energy Bill Support
Scheme.
There are lots of things you can do at
home, from easy no cost actions to bigger
investments, that could save you hundreds
more. It all adds up.
Turn down your combo boiler flow
temperature.
Turning the temperature down to 60
degrees could save you up to £100 a
year. Flow temperature is the temperature
of the water that your boiler sends to
radiators. Reducing flow temperature isn’t
the same as lowering your thermostat and
won’t noticeably reduce the temperature
of your home but may increase the time
it takes to reach the target temperature
on your thermostat. If you are over 65,
or have pre-existing health conditions,
you may want to set a slightly higher flow
temperature of 65°C to ensure your home
warms more quickly.
Turning down radiators in rooms could
save you up to £70 a year
When you’re not using rooms, turn
radiator valves down to roughly 18°C.
While you are using a room, increase the
temperature to a comfortable level by
turning the valve up. Turn off radiators
completely in rooms you are not using.
People over 65, children under 5 and
those with pre-existing health conditions
are more vulnerable to cold temperatures.
Make sure you are warm enough and have
a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C
to ensure you protect your health while
maintaining comfort.
Washing clothes at a lower temperature
could save you up to £40 a year
Modern washing machines can clean
clothes effectively at lower temperatures.
Changing from 40°C to 30°C means you
could get 3 cycles instead of 2 using the
same amount of energy, depending on
your washing machine.
Using your tumble dryer less could save
you £70 a year
Tumble dryers are one of the most
energy-intensive devices in the home.
As the weather is improving stop using the
tumble dryer and dry clothes outside.
Closing all your curtains and blinds at
night
By closing your curtains and blinds, you
can help stop warm air escaping through
windows and reduce heating costs,
especially if you have radiators situated
below your windows.
Truro City Council
Warm Welcome
report
by Damien Richards
After a councillor raised concerns
over the cost-of-living at a council
meeting last summer, and how
Truro City Council might deliver
an initiative to support residents,
Truro applied (successfully) for
funding from NHS Cornwall and Isles
of Scilly via Volunteer Cornwall.
We project-managed ‘Warm Welcome’ for
Truro delivering warmth banks for people,
to save them money by not using energy
at home, and receiving information, advice
and guidance on money, saving, debt
advice, energy saving and signposting to
other support.
We deliver the project at Moresk Centre,
Malabar Community Centre, Trelander
and St. Clements Community Hall and
Malpas Road Community Centre. At
the Trelander, Malabar and Malpas
Warm Welcome sessions we work with
CHAOS Farm to deliver food larders and
clubs where people collect free quality
surplus goods from supermarkets, and
fresh produce from the CHAOS Farm.
Our warmth banks aren’t all doom and
gloom: they are full of laughter, banter
and mutual care for one another through
peer support and/or professional advice.
We have been busy - and getting some
great feedback. Our attendance numbers
weekly are submitted to Volunteer
Cornwall monthly. To go the extra mile
we have put together a feedback survey
to gain qualitative responses from
participants, so we can present case
studies to show the impact the project is
having.
Some of the responses we have been
getting through feedback are:
“It has significantly
improved my mental
health”
“It has been really
helpful as I live alone
since husband died”
“I live on my own on a small
pension and this gives me a
chance to meet people and
get out, and is affordable”
Warm Welcome will be running until 31st March 2023 - Reduce energy at home &
visit our new Warm Welcome Community Spaces.
• Monday – Moresk Centre - 09.00 – 13.00
COMMUNITY NEWS
THE YOUNG JOURNALIST
Avatar:
The Way of Water
James Cameron’s recent sci-fi film
Avatar: The Way of Water; has become
the number four movie of all time,
predicted to surpass Titanic!
Many go to see this environmental message
- closer to home than we may think! Humans
are fleeing from Earth (no longer fit for
habitation) and attempting to colonise the
ecological haven that is Pandora. As the
Indigenous people of Pandora (the Na’Vi)
lament the destruction of unique ecosystems
and defend their home. Viewers can draw
parallels between the tragic tale and our
current climate crisis.
The protagonist, Jake Sully, and his Na’Vi
family are hunted down and forced to migrate
from their forest home (a reality for many
Indigenous peoples on our own planet). The
devastating deforestation of Pandora’s forest
by the humans also depicts the plight of our
rainforests, their extraordinary natural wonders
being razed without a second thought.
The family finds refuge by the sea with an
Indigenous coastal community. Pandora is
similar to Earth in this sense, with a rich
biodiversity and extraordinary landscapes.
Jake’s son, Lo’ak, forms a brotherly bond
with a massive, misunderstood sea creature
and Jake’s daughter, Kiri, is spiritually
connected to Mother Nature (‘Eywa’) and is
able to save her family’s lives by working
with, not against, nature. Through these
relationships, Cameron expresses his
belief that emotional connection with
nature wonders is crucial to changing
the detrimental impact we have on the
environment and adopting the values of
interdependence, harmony and taking only
what we need.
Historically, the systems established by
Indigenous peoples around the world
have maintained environmental sustainability.
The core values of many Indigenous
communities, depicted in Avatar, include
conserving resources and protecting natural
areas to ensure a sustainable relationship
with nature which future generations can
also benefit. However, Avatar uncovers the
reality of deforestation and destruction of
Indigenous lives through storytelling. Perhaps
the most compelling and effective way to get
the world to listen.
In the Amazon rainforest, activities such
as mining, logging and agriculture are
killing the crucial carbon sink. The
documentary film ‘The Territory’ is a
human take on Avatar’s message about
protecting Indigenous cultures such
as the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau people who fight
for their rainforest home which they believe
to be the ‘heart of the world’.
Not all is lost. The land managed by
Indigenous people in the Amazon has lower
deforestation rates than ‘protected areas’
(e.g. national parks). Ensuring those who
live sustainably on the land have secure
access to it, connecting to nature spiritually
and protecting our home planet are the
messages that run through this film like a
river. Messages that need to be heard -
and acted on - now more than ever.
Sanchi is a student. The three
things she loves most are nature,
people and writing. Uniting these,
she aims to create a brighter,
greener world!
