Power to
the people!
Phil Dalton, MIoR, inspecting
the solar panels with
colleagues Jake and Wes.
THE team of experts from Dalton Roofing have climbed to the
top of many of the buildings in their neighbourhood and much
further afield. Now they have been spotted on their own rooftop!
Phil Dalton (MIoR) and his colleagues only usually scale their
ladders and utilise the family-run company’s cherry-pickers when
there are problems to rectify, but in the case of their own
premises they were up on high to install solar panels to generate
electricity to heat and light their premises below.
Said Phil: “We are excited to be helping people with such
projects because once the initial solar panel costs are covered,
you will not need to spend a penny on the electricity they
produce. Moreover, you will reduce your carbon footprint by
using solar energy, since it is totally green and renewable.
“Even though installation prices might seem high, the payback
period is quite short due to the savings on electricity bills and
Government aids. Homes equipped with solar panels also sell
faster and at a higher price than those without.”
Dalton Roofing have thought long and hard about helping
people make the most of their roofspace and Phil has been joined
by son William, site manager Paul and Jake in successfully
completing stringent Solar PV Installation courses. Their
certificates are now proudly displayed at the company’s
Sheepbridge premises.
Phil is now a firm devotee of solar power and when he arrives at
work each morning he is keen to check on how much energy his
rooftop has generated.
He explained: “Even though maximum efficiency is reached
when the sun is shining, electricity is still produced on cloudy days
and during winter.
“No electricity can be produced at night, but a storage system
can solve this problem. You should still consider that solar panels
produce free electricity during the day, which is when it is usually
more expensive and hence more valuable. Sunsynk is leading the
way with our revolutionary energy storage systems and inverters.
“The vast majority of available PV modules use silicon as their
main component. This is good because there is plenty of silicon –
it is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. The
silicon cells manufactured from one ton of sand produce as much
electricity as burning 500,000 tons of coal.
“Conventional fuel sources have created an array of
environmental and human health problems, including carbon
dioxide emissions leading to climate change, acid rain, air
pollution, smog, water pollution, rapidly-filling waste disposal
sites and destruction of habitat from oil spills and accidents.”
Phil and his colleagues are excited to have installed solar panels
on their own premises and they would be delighted to talk to
anyone considering making the same decision regarding their
own home or business premises.
Lockdown days remembered
A
N exhibition to commemorate
the experiences of local people
during the Covid-19 lockdown has
been curated by Chesterfield
Museum.
The community-led exhibition includes a
selection of art, textile, poetry, prose,
music, film, and photography, as well as
the Chesterfield Big Lockdown Textile,
which is made up of 100 textile squares
created by residents.
The exhibition is available to visit for
free until Wednesday, 26th April, in
the Assembly Rooms above
Chesterfield Market Hall and will be
open Monday to Saturday, from 11am
to 3pm. It was curated ahead of the
third UK National Day of Reflection.
Coun Tricia Gilby, leader of
Chesterfield Borough Council, said:
“Covid-19 had a lasting impact on
our community and whilst we are
still recovering from some of the
effects of the pandemic, this
exhibition serves as a poignant
reminder of that time but also an
opportunity to reflect on our
shared experience.
“From creating and delivering
food parcels to keeping
everyone connected through
phone calls, our community worked together through lockdown
to support and protect each other. This exhibition aims to
celebrate our community and the resilience we showed through
the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.
“This exhibition has been planned for three years and I would
encourage everyone to visit and use this as an opportunity to
think and reflect.”
During the first lockdown in 2020, Chesterfield Museum began
planning how to commemorate the unprecedented situation, and
it was decided to create an exhibition bringing together stories,
items and art created by the community.
In 2021, the museum team began promoting and coordinating
the creation of the Chesterfield Big Lockdown Textile which
Lockdown
textile
includes 100 fabric squares that were created by members of the
local community.
This artwork was brought together with the help of Jenny Scott
of the Chesterfield Embroiderers. It has recently been on display
in the Pavements Shopping Centre but the exhibition will allow
visitors to get up close.
Visitors are invited to leave a comment in the Chesterfield in
Lockdown memorial book where they can reflect on their
experience, dedicate a thank you or message of love and pay
tribute to anyone who passed away during the pandemic.
There will also be a selection of activities for the whole family to
try, including paper-weaving, colouring sheets, poetry and family
games.
At last! Dave has Bolsover date
N
ORTH Derbyshire singing star
Dave Berry has performed at
most of the UK’s most prestigious
entertainment venues over a career
spanning more than 60 years... but
he has never set foot on stage in
one local town - Bolsover.
That omission is to be put right this
summer when, together with his band The
Cruisers, Dave will appear at Bolsover
Assembly Rooms in a show organised by
the town’s Rotary Club.
Dave was one of Britain’s original teen
idol pop stars, enjoying a string of hits in
the 1960s including Memphis Tennessee,
Little Things, Mama and the classic Crying
Game. On the continent he was
presented with a Gold Disc for his
recording of This Strange Effect which
was written for him by Ray Davies of The
Kinks.
Originally from the Beighton and
Woodhouse area of Sheffield, but living in
Dronfield for almost 60 years, Dave
reflects on his early days in the music
business with pride.
With a unique stage presence, he
performed his favourite rhythm ‘n’ blues
and rock ‘n’ roll songs for enthusiastic
audiences at a number of dance halls and
other concert venues in the Chesterfield,
Worksop and Mansfield area - but never
in Bolsover.
“North Derbyshire was a very important
area for me and my band and we enjoyed
performing at both the Victoria Ballroom
and also ‘Jimmy’s’ - St James’ Hall - in
Chesterfield. I was back in the town
performing at The Winding Wheel just 18
months ago.
“Peter Stringfellow came to Chesterfield
to see us perform one night - either in
1961 or ‘62 - and then booked us to play
at one of his venues in Sheffield. He told
us we were the first band he had ever
made money on and his own career as a
promoter took off from there,” recalled
Dave.
“In Worksop we played at the Monaco Ballroom with Gene
Vincent in the very early days and down the road in Mansfield I
performed alongside The Ronettes and The Rolling Stones.
“I’ve played at venues large and small throughout the country
and I’m delighted to finally be booked to appear in Bolsover; I’m
looking forward to it very much.”
Dave’s show at The Assembly Rooms is on Saturday, June 10th,
and shortly after that his diary includes a nationwide tour with the
likes of PJ Proby, Steve Ellis from Love Affair and Herman’s
Hermits.
“I will be making my debut at the Assembly Rooms and then
taking to the stage at venues such as the Royal Concert Hall in
Glasgow and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.”
Bolsover Rotarians decided to invite Dave to perform in the
town after hearing him speak about his career at one of their
meetings a year ago. Funds raised from the event will go
towards causes supported by the group.
After more than 60 years, Dronfield’s Dave Berry finally
finds himself at the centre of things in Bolsover
Dave revealed that although he has never sung in Bolsover, he
did once have an engagement in the town... for a fight!
“I have never been in a fight in my life and I can’t recall the
exact circumstances, but I do remember that in the early 1960s
five or six of us thought it might be a good idea to go to Bolsover
to look to take on some lads there.
“I can’t remember what happened, but hopefully they aren’t still
looking for me!”
Support act for Dave Berry & The Cruisers at the Assembly
Rooms is The Chris Firminger Band. Tickets are priced £20 and
booking information is available via bolsover-rotary.org.uk
Tickets are also available from Pages Paint Shop on Castle
Street, Bolsover.
Bolsover Rotary President Graham Weighill said: “This will be a
night to remember - don’t miss out.
“We are really excited about this concert and there will also be
some awesome raffle prizes to be won on the night. All proceeds
will go to support Bolsover Rotary charities.”
Pete
The Destination Chesterfield chair presents his
monthly update for Twist magazine readers
I
Swallow
‘VE said it before and I will say it again, we ALL need
to talk up the town.
There is more than £2 billion of investment in progress and on
the way across our borough to help ensure that we all have a
bright future ahead of us.
The lasting and far-reaching change we are striving for in
Chesterfield cannot be done by one organisation alone; it must
be a collaborative effort.
We all have a role and responsibility to tell people about the
many great reasons they should live, work, invest and stay
here.
Chesterfield’s geographical position within the UK is hard to
beat. We are centrally located with excellent road and rail links
and a number of major airports within a 90-minute drive.
Furthermore, the benefits of our proximity to the Peak District
National Park should not be underestimated. Chesterfield is the
gateway to this wonderful landscape, and it attracts millions of
visitors each year – with around half of them staying overnight
and many of them passing through the town to get to the Peak
District.
Herein lies our challenge. By talking up the town to friends,
relatives, colleagues and suppliers from outside the area, we can
attract more people to visit and stay overnight in Chesterfield
rather than just passing through, the result being more revenue
for the town as a whole.
Increasing the visitor economy of the town by 20% is one of
the key targets in the Chesterfield Growth Strategy which has
been launched by Chesterfield Borough Council.
Visitor economy
By increasing the visitor economy, we will also help create jobs
for local people and opportunities for existing and new
businesses.
We must all shout about what the town has to offer to holidaymakers
visiting the Peak District.
Living and working in the town on a daily basis, we can often
become complacent about what it has to offer visitors to the
area.
We have a variety of places to stay, including the awardwinning
Casa Hotel, as well as great road, rail and bus links into
the Peak District. You can even cycle from the town into the
Peak District.
Beyond our world famous Crooked Spire church and the
Brampton Mile, we have two theatres, Chesterfield FC, a historic
market, restaurants, bars, cafes, boutique shops, live music
venues, Queen’s Park - which is host to many wonderful events
like the cricket and concerts in summer.
I could go on, the list of reasons to visit and stay in Chesterfield
is endless.
Having a thriving local economy is key to developing
conversations with national investors and ensuring Chesterfield
continues to grow and develop. If we want to see the town thrive
in an increasingly competitive market, we need to do more
collectively. We must champion Chesterfield outside the area in
order to help us bring investment into the borough and create
highly skilled jobs.
Together we can all help bring about lasting change and
prosperity to the town which will benefit local people now and
future generations.
Cloudy2Clear, A Local
Service, Saving You Money.
As a leading domestic glass
replacement company for more
than 16 years, Cloudy2Clear
windows are the leading name
in the industry. There is no
need for you to risk your
windows by using the dreaded
double glazing cowboy down
the street. You can join over
336,000 happy customers and
replace your glass ethically
and affordably. If you have
a failed glass unit, it may
not provide you with the
protection you need or be as
energy-efficient as it once
was. Take a minute to check
your home to see if any double
glazing has failed? Taking
action now can prevent future
financial problems.
When talking to the Manager
of Cloudy2Clear windows John
Kendall it became clear that these
values have been held dear for a
number of years. Since starting
the business some years ago
Cloudy2Clear have remained true
to their core values of supporting
the local community by providing
a service that saves the public
money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only
requires the glass to be replaced
and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. John
commented “Cloudy2Clear were
able to assist our community

in 2008 due to the savings that
can be made in using our service.
Unfortunately we might be going
through something similar again
soon and the public can rest
assured that we will be there to
help once again”.
It’s time to take this seriously
It’s time to talk about the
menopause. Chesterfield
MP Toby Perkins says it’s
vital that we challenge any
stigma attached to the
menopause and ensure
women are receiving the
support they need at
every stage of their lives
M
ENOPAUSE is often a taboo subject, which could be
because there is an assumption that women who go
through it experience changes to their sexual function or
desire.
Some may also say it is not often discussed because issues that
affect women in this age bracket are often ignored or less
relevant. Of course, women’s issues at all ages are important and
the subject of the menopause is moving higher up the political
agenda.
A recent documentary by Davina McCall about menopausal and
peri-menopausal women brought the subject into the open, and it
showed how challenging some of the symptoms are for so many
women.
It highlighted many significant and lesser-known symptoms that
many would not automatically link to the change in hormones
during this stage of life. I wasn’t
previously aware, for example,
that memory loss, or brain fog,
and anxiety were symptoms of
the menopause.
It was suggested in the
programme that research has
shown how Hormone
Replacement Therapy may
even help prevent brain
problems in later life, such as
dementia.
The programme was an
eye-opener for me and, I
suspect for many employers. As
a country, we lose too many
women from the workplace and
it is in our economic as well as
social interest to be better at
supporting 50% of the
population as they reach this
entirely natural stage of their
lives.
The number of women who will
experience the menopause
whilst working is increasing, but
far too many are suffering in
silence.
A recent report from the
Women and Equalities
Committee found that lack of
support from employers for
menopausal symptoms was
pushing highly skilled and
experienced women out of
work, whilst stats from the
Fawcett Society indicates that
one in ten women aged 45-55
10
Carolyn Harris MP: ‘Leading a successful campaign to
change the way we think and talk about the menopause’
left their jobs last year due to their
symptoms and the lack of support from
their employers.
The next Labour government will require
all large employers, with more than 250
employees, to write and implement a
menopause action plan to help ensure that
women are receiving the individual support
they need. This could be allowing time off
work, flexible hours, providing temperaturecontrolled
working areas. And we will also
focus on ensuring all employers take the
menopause seriously by promoting better
awareness and training.
Ensuring women get the right workplace support and enabling
more to stay in employment is good for their health and
wellbeing, better for employers and better for the UK’s
productivity and wider economy.
Even though we all have mothers, grandmothers, friends and
work colleagues, who will have gone (or are going) through the
menopause, it has often been discussed in hushed tones or
treated as a joke, meaning many women have felt too
embarrassed to bring it up or ask for support.
Alarmingly, women have reported their symptoms being
dismissed by their GP so they are unable to access the support
and treatment available.
Whilst there has been some welcome examples of the NHS and
specialist doctors addressing and promoting the importance of a
wider knowledge of the
menopause, more still needs to
be done.
Chesterfield Royal’s
gynaecology department do
accept GP referrals for their
specialist service, and the British
Menopause Society website has
a directory pointing to
specialists in this field, including
Dr Amanda Smith, a former
North Derbyshire GP, who
specialises in sexual health and
menopause.
A campaign led by my friend
and colleague Carolyn Harris MP
means that women will now be
able to receive a HRT Certificate
– giving them access to a
variety of treatments every year
for just £20, which will save
women over £200 a year in
prescription fees and make it
easier to access support.
Carolyn is also leading a
successful campaign to change
the way we think and talk about
the menopause. Symptoms
shouldn’t be treated as a joke
and women should be able to
discuss it without feeling
embarrassed or ridiculed.
At home, at work and in their
everyday lives, it is in all our
interests for women to be
supported through what can be
one of the most challenging
times in their lives.

All fine for
Finley!
IT’S high fives all round for Highland Green – this fresh
take on bedroom colours from Supafit. The colour was
picked by a nine-year-old for his bedroom.
Adrian Calvert said son Finley made his own choice for
what is a replication of bespoke furniture in his older
brother’s bedroom, installed by Supafit about three years
ago.
As Adrian points out, the style - a four panel Hornsey
door - and lay-out had worked well so it was decided to
stick with the same design for Finley’s room. Brass
handles add to the effect.
He said: “The green was Finley’s choice, matched to a
bed he wanted, and he is 100 per cent happy with it.”
As well as plenty of wardrobe space, Finley has a desk
for his school work and a screen.
Going back to Supafit was an easy choice for the family,
who live in Dore in Sheffield.
Adrian said: “We tend to stick
with people if we have been
happy with the work they’ve
done.
“It’s just the convenience of
everything with Supafit. Nothing
seems to be too much trouble.
“It’s all done within a day – it’s
a doddle.”
Road closure fees
waived for big day
R
ESIDENTS across Chesterfield are being
encouraged to hold their own celebration to mark
the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III – and
they can now apply to host a street party without
having to pay a road closure fee.
Chesterfield Borough Council is waiving the standard road
closure fee between Saturday 6th and Monday 8th May, 2023, to
make it even easier for local communities to come together to
mark the first Coronation of a UK monarch for nearly 70 years.
Anyone thinking of closing a road for a street party will still
need to apply to Chesterfield Borough Council for permission by
completing an application form and returning it to the council by
Sunday, 26th March. More information on the application and
tips for hosting a street party can be found at:
www.chesterfield.gov.uk
Coun Sharon Blank, cabinet member for governance said: “The
Coronation will be a huge event in our history, and we know that
many local residents will be thinking about planning their own
celebrations.”
“Make sure you have a chat with your neighbours and get your
application in so you can join in with the celebrations.”
Bell-ringing invitation
ANCY a physical and mental workout while having
F fun?
The Derby Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers invites
you to give bell ringing a try.
The group numbers about 650 bell ringers across Derbyshire
who meet to ring and socialise together, give support and
training, promote bell ringing and provide bell ringing advice.
Said the group’s Sue Hall: “It's the perfect challenge for an
individual, family or bunch of friends.
You may be surprised that bell ringers come from different
faiths and backgrounds, and young people, from the age of nine,
and adults ring together as equals.
“Ringing lessons are usually free or inexpensive, and modern
technology can help you train.”
Throughout Derbyshire, plans are being made to Ring for the
King’s Coronation on 6th May and anyone joining now might be
able to take part.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
One of the UK’s largest, award-winning caravan and
motorhome dealers - with more than 40 years experience -
has set up a new centre here in the heart of Chesterfield.
WITH warmer days just around the corner, plus a host of long Bank
Holiday weekends for everyone to plan for, your thoughts are most likely
turning to holidays and short family breaks.
More and more people are choosing to get away from the hustle and bustle of
everyday life by investing in the independence of their own caravan or
motorhome.
The good news for readers of this magazine is that a fabulous, long-established,
family-run business - Kimberley Caravans - is welcoming people to its brand new
Chesterfield premises.
The large site - between the A61 bypass and the town’s railway station - took six
months to transform into a one-stop caravan and motorhome centre and now offers
seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers everything they could wish for.
Operations manager John Ivell explained: “We aim to have around 50 preowned
caravans on site at any one time, but have facilities for up to 100. We also
have around 30 new caravans displayed here.”
Having other centres in Nottingham and Darlington means Kimberley in
Chesterfield also has easy access to a large group stock of caravans and
motorhomes.
Added John: “Customers tend to visit us from a 50-mile radius, but they have
also come to Chesterfield from as far away as Southampton. Motorhomers will
travel the length and breadth of Britain to find what they are looking for.
“We are in the perfect location and being right on the doorstep of the Peak
District offers some fantastic opportunities to go caravanning.”
The business is a major agent for Compass Caravans and other recognisable
manufacturers including Adria, Xplore, Coachman, Bailey and Swift Carrera but
buys, sells and part-exchanges all models.
Caravans are available to suit all budgets and each one comes with a guarantee
and warranty.
If you already own a caravan, you may be keen to have it serviced prior to the
2023 holiday season. Kimberley offers servicing for almost all brands, together
with insurance estimates and accident repairs and they can obtain parts from most
manufacturers.
A must for all caravan and motorhome enthusiasts is a visit to the well-stocked onsite
shop where you will discover all manner of accessories and other items to
enhance your caravan or motorhome experience.
Kimberley Caravans is open in Chesterfield every day except Easter Sunday and
Christmas.
Boost wildlife habitats in
Blue Tit enjoying a spiked apple
This small-holed box will attract Tit family members
House Sparrow nesting box
22
Planning your wildlife garden or a community
wildspace is certainly not rocket science, but
it does require thought and, sometimes,
imagination too. Prof Ian Rotherham explains
A
KEY thing to consider when attempting to attract more
wildlife to your garden is how your site or place differs from
wild nature - and especially what it lacks. Then, you come up
with ways to plug the gaps!
Look carefully at wilder places and more natural sites and think about
the wildlife species you hope to attract. You can then devise and design
features to mimic the natural world and to provide mini-habitats or
habitat boosters to deliver what the wildlife species require.
Feeding the birds in a range and variety of ways is one example, and
this has evolved from the Victorian practice of throwing a few crumbs
onto the ground, to what is now a sophisticated and indeed, multimillion
pound industry.
How you feed and what you provide depends on your target birds and,
of course, how much you want to spend or can afford. Don’t worry,
there are relatively low cost ways of doing this as well. We will touch on
some of these in a later feature.
Most gardens lack breeding and roosting sites for birds, bats and
insects, and so this is an easy way to supplement the provision.
Bird boxes, bat boxes, and bug boxes can be huge fun. However,
don’t assume that because you have provided a suitably placed,
upmarket ‘des res’ the birds or bats or even the bugs, will come.
Blue tits, for instance, will check out several different possible
nesting sites before choosing one, and the final selection may be
perplexing. We don’t view this from the bird’s-eye perspective, and I
guess they know best.
Strategy
So, with bird boxes the best strategy is as many as possible and in
slightly different positions and then let them get on with choosing.
Avoid sites with direct, hot sun in summertime afternoons, and
anywhere that might have excessive water run-off down, say, the trunk
of a tree. You will see water runnels marked out by algae and mosses,
so simply ensure that doesn’t impact on your box.
The selection of box types and locations depends on your garden, the
trees or walls available to you, and the species of bird likely to take up
your offer; and you need to be realistic to avoid disappointment.
There is plenty of on-line guidance from the RSPB or the Wildlife Trusts
on types, siting and suitability of boxes. It is fun to make them, but you
can now also buy them very cheaply too.
Bat boxes are rather more specialist but are a great boon to
conservation. Again, as many as possible and in different locations.
These will be used for roosting by bats, and they move around
according to changes in weather etc; and once they are there, then they
should not be disturbed.
Bug boxes are great fun but for maximum effect, place in a sunny,
exposed position and the solitary bees will surely move in.
Our first free workshop on this topic will take place at Sheffield
Botanical Gardens. I will be covering topics such as habitat creation and
planning for nature, and looking both inside the garden and beyond to
your neighbourhood community greenspaces.
The event is on April 20th and thanks to a local sponsor supporting the
Friends of Whirlow Brook Park, it is totally free. However, you do have to
book, and places are limited: bookwhen.com/sybrg/e/ev-sdz8-
20230420133000 . There will be further details posted on our website.
On the wings of love
A ragged butterfly called Isobel was an
unexpected guest over last summer, writes
Deborah Wain, and she left a lasting impression
I
SOBEL’S story starts the Christmas before last when
the children who live next door, Freya and Jacob,
received butterfly-raising kits as gifts.
These comprised two net ‘gardens’ and vouchers to exchange
for live caterpillars in the spring.
In May, ten caterpillars arrived by post and were placed in
containers of feed which would sustain them as they munched
their way through 200 times their own body weight and became
pupae.
This is where I come in. As my neighbours were going to spend
a week at the seaside, I was entrusted to mind the caterpillars. I
marvelled at how they inched to the top of the tubs, before
attaching themselves with their silk to the lids, their form
gradually disappearing as they hardened into chrysalides.
A few days later, back with the children, the pupae started to
hatch into beautifully-marked painted ladies.
Eight butterflies were eventually
released into my neighbours’ back
garden in a flurry of excitement.
The two remaining insects, called
Sports Day (named by Jacob, then
aged five) and Isobel, presented a
dilemma. They had damaged their
soft wings while hatching. Isobel
had only one intact wing, the other
resembled a kite caught in
overhead wires and shredded by
the wind.
To condemn the pair to an
inevitable, swift end in the outside
world seemed cruel, but was it
better to leave matters to nature?
Sports Day lived only a few days
but Isobel (perhaps she was female,
none of us knew how to sex
butterflies!), was kept and thrived in
captivity with fresh fruit and flowers.
About three weeks after hatching,
Isobel came to stay for a week.
Reading that captured painted
ladies usually survive for only two to four weeks, I imagined she
would soon have lived out her days. The remaining smattering of
colour on her wings was fading fast.
The next day, I found Isobel lying perfectly still on her side in
the bottom of the net and I messaged my neighbours with the
sad news, promising to do a final check later. A few hours on, I
was astonished to see Isobel flapping about again.
The kids found the “trick” she had played on me
hilarious.
I was fascinated by Isobel’s behaviour. The way
she fluttered into life if she was moved into lighter
conditions, as if charged by the sun, and how she
spent the night upside down.
Although she couldn’t fly, Isobel could climb to
the top of the net and, while feeding was often
awkward for her, she slowly managed it.
How often do we stop and really notice wildlife
and their trials? The life force in Isobel seemed
unstoppable. It is perhaps unsurprising that, in the
wild, painted ladies have recorded speeds of
24
Butterfly fans Freya
and Jacob
Isobel enjoying fruity nourishment
almost 30 miles per hour.
After I handed Isobel back at the end of the week, another
fortnight passed with updates on her condition. I learned she had
lost more chunks of her wings but otherwise she was fine.
No-one had expected Isobel to make it to the final part of the
school holidays and I looked after her again. By then, she was
about seven weeks old. On one occasion she fell from the top of
The young neighbours say ‘thanks’
the net and lay stunned, before starting to unfold her crooked
legs a few minutes later. That time I knew better than to think she
was gone!
As a new school year started and Freya had her ninth birthday,
Isobel turned two months. At ten weeks, my little
butterfly friend came to stay again.
By this time, she had slowed up considerably
and was active for only brief periods. The days
were turning cooler and darker too. I feared she
wouldn’t see out the weekend; unfortunately I was
right. I felt quite sad when Isobel settled on the
floor of the net and this time didn’t move again.
However, we all agreed and accepted that she
had come to a natural end and it had been a
fascinating journey seeing her live up close.
Sometimes the smallest of living things can touch
us and remind us of the power of loving care.
Isobel and friends in their caterpillar days

Mags Ravenstone is no stranger to renovating houses and,
following a move from North to South Yorkshire with her
husband, she set about finding a local company to take on
work in their new home in Hemsworth, Sheffield.
The end-of-terrace property was built in the 1960s and had its original
separate toilet and bathroom with décor from the 1990s. It was also
freezing cold with no heating.
Mags wanted to bring the bathroom bang up-to-date by creating one
airy space from the two and replacing the bath with a walk-in shower.
After calling in to A61 Bathrooms’ premises on Chesterfield Road,
Woodseats, Sheffield - before the keys to the property were even in her
hands – Mags had already bought an ex-display cabinet from owner Craig
Leighton and commissioned the work.
Mags said: “I like to use local businesses where possible and Craig and
his son and staff are all lovely, so friendly.”
A few weeks later, once the purchase of the property had finally gone
through, Craig and his team moved in to carry out the project.
As family members have mobility issues, the priority element of the
scheme was the replacement of the bath with an easy-to-use walk-in
shower. Fittings are unusually in black, with a large, square drencher
shower head and a hand-held alternative.
Other work included installation of double wash basins with matt black
taps, and a long, vertical, black towel rail, while the walls are resplendent
with glittery highlights.
Mags said she really appreciated every aspect of the work being projectmanaged
by Craig, who kept her informed throughout.
“Very respectful of the fact
they were working in a home.”
“It was really nice to have the personal touch.”
“I would certainly recommend
them to anyone.”

Walk right in!
Family combine two smaller rooms to
create a striking new walk-in shower room
She was also impressed by the working practices of the fitting
team.
“They were very respectful of the fact that they were working
in a home and not at a building site. Even in the middle of the
job, everything was tidied away each evening.”
Mags commented: “We had some delays but delays do
happen, and the work was done, as promised, by Christmas and
it looks fabulous.”
In addition to the new, black, white and silver bathroom, A61
Bathrooms also arranged for the installation of a new boiler.
This involved removing the old boiler from the kitchen and
fitting a new one in the upstairs airing cupboard where a water
cyclinder was once housed – another “good job”.
Mags, who is thoroughly enjoying living in this part of the
world, concluded: “It was really nice to have the personal touch
from A61 Bathrooms and I would certainly recommend them to
anyone.”
THE
TAP
HOUSE
CHESTERFIELD is well known for attracting real ale fans
from near and far.
One gem of a place some may have missed is The
Tap House, a free house on Chatsworth Road, and a
key part of the famous Brampton Mile.
The Tap House has long been a public house and has
had a number of different identities over the years.
It remained closed for a while following the Covid
pandemic, but was given a fresh look and new lease of
life by landlady Kerry Glover who took over at the
beginning of 2022.
The pub offers a friendly welcome and an extensive
choice for drinkers with eight real cask ales and four
cask ciders.
Local breweries are regularly represented such as
Thornbridge, Peak, Welbeck and Eyam and customers
can not only see the make up of each beer via display
jars, but can sample before they buy.
The Tap House is also one of few local venues which
always has the old favourite Bass on tap.
For those who want a bite to eat with their drink, there
are bar snacks including locally-sourced pork pies.
The pub is a new venture for Kerry and she explains
that it already seems to have found its niche.
“People are still discovering that the pub has reopened
and are quite surprised and happy to find us here.
“We’re getting people coming in not only from the
local area but further afield like Lincolnshire and
Nottinghamshire.
“Everyone seems to like the choice we have at the bar
and the comfortable, quieter atmosphere where you
can have a chat.
“We’re also family and dog-friendly.”
A crackling open fire adds to the venue’s cosiness on
chillier days.
The Tap House is open Monday to Thursday, from
4pm, Friday, from 2pm, and Saturday and Sunday,
from noon.
Play’s
purrfect
outcome
So proud of
father’s Polar
Bear service
HERE were big smiles all round after Dronfield Players’
production of play Cheshire Cats, by Gail Young, raised
£597.61 for Ashgate Hospice.
The donation will help the charity provide palliative and end of life care
at its Inpatient Unit in Chesterfield and in community across north
Derbyshire.
Leigh Allwood, from the hospice, said: “We’re so grateful for the support of
everyone at Dronfield Players after choosing to support us in their recent
production.
“To have raised such an amount of money is incredible and will help us
continue caring for the patients and families across North Derbyshire who
need us the most.”
The drama group chose the hospice to benefit as the charity has cared for
some of the members and their families, during difficult illnesses.
Chrissy Broughton, chair of Dronfield Players, was accompanied by
fellow ‘Cheshire Cats’, Carol Mullins and Caroline Hurt, to hand over the
money.
The production received great feedback from audiences, the group reported.
Dronfield Players are celebrating their 80th anniversary this year and their
spring production is See How They Run a comedy farce by Philip King, from
22nd to 25th March.
Litter-pick invitation
C
HESTERFIELD residents are invited to help keep the borough
tidy by joining in with community litter picks.
Chesterfield Borough Council’s tenant engagement team has organised two
litter picks in the borough and is on the lookout for willing volunteers to get
involved and lend a helping hand too.
The next litter pick will take place at Green Farm Close, Loundsley Green, on
Tuesday, 28th March, starting at 10am and finishing at 12noon.
Anyone wishing to support the event is asked to meet next to the recycling
area.
Litter-pickers, high visibility jackets and gloves will be provided for
everyone taking part. Anyone attending should wear sensible shoes and
clothing.
Coun Chris Ludlow, the Borough Council’s cabinet member for housing, said:
“Keeping our communities clean and tidy is one of our top priorities as a council
and involving local residents helps us to build a strong community through
communication and teamwork.
“Our tenant engagement team and housing officers will be aiming to hold
regular litter picking events across the borough, so we encourage residents to
keep an eye out on the council’s website and social media channels for more
information.”
Anyone who would like any further information on the event, or other future litter
picks, can contact the tenant engagement team on tenantengagement@
Dear Dronfield Eye,
MY sister, who lives in Chesterfield, passed
on a copy of your January Twist magazine,
pointing out the article about the Polar
Bear regiment as our dad was a Polar
Bear.
We consider ourselves Polar Bear ‘cubs’ and
after reading the article about your editor’s
grandfather, he seems to have been in the same
places as our father in World War II.
My dad was in the York & Lancaster
Hallamshire regiment; he served two years in
Iceland then seemed to be all over the place.
He too went across the Channel with the
Canadians. He should have gone the day before,
but there was an air strike on the docks so he
went the day after. At that time, ‘strike’ had a
totally different meaning to nowadays.
He then went with the British Expeditionary
Force into Germany, in particular it would seem
Cologne.
My sister and I started to do family tree
research and we came across some photos from
my dad’s time in the army, mostly of Iceland, with
fellow Army friends and views and pictures of
bridges in and around Cologne.
My dad also had pictures of two German
families that he had some connection with in
Cologne.
My sister and I, with respective husbands,
drove across to Cologne to try and find the
locations of the bridges, which we did, and took
modern day pictures. In spite of the sadness for
our dad and the pictures we had seen, we had a
good time.
I have my dad’s Army papers but they are very
difficult to read as they seem to have their own
shorthand with lots of capital letters with no
words in between. I also have his shoulder
badge of a Polar Bear, plus a couple of silk
hankies from Iceland.
It felt good to read about another Polar Bear’s
experience and think about all the experiences
my dad may have gone through.
With six voices, playing foot-stomping, heart-warming, uplifting
music from traditional roots around the world, the aim is for
audiences to have a great time be it listening, singing along,
dancing or just raising a glass.
The History of Juggling and Circus Skills, on Thursday, 30th
March, at 1.30pm, is a talk by Matthew Tiffany from Greentop
Circus on how the circus was invented and where jugglers
eventually fit.
It was during the mid-Victorian period that a revolution of
juggling, courtesy of a visitor from the east, enabled the
developments in European juggling, that we know and love
today.
And yes, there will be plenty of live demonstrations!
• STRICTLY Stars Karen Hauer, Gorka Marquez and their cast
mix of Latin, rock and pop music from artists such as Camilla
Cabello, Jason Derulo, Gregory Porter, Gypsy Kings, J.Lo,
TEETH WHITENING &
COMPOSITE BONDING
Composite bonding is a technique to build up tooth structure that
has been lost. It involves bonding a tooth coloured resin material to
existing teeth to reshape them or improve their colour, resulting in
an overall improved smile.
Boutique Whitening uses a double action formula to give you a
beautiful white smile, with a noticeable improvement in just a few
days. The gels break down to form Oxygen ions that remove
surface stains, whilst also penetrating deep into the tooth,
whitening from the inside out.
