From the
EDITOR
Welcome to the inaugural East Alabama Weddings issue, an entire magazine
dedicated to bliss. It has been a dream to have a stand-alone wedding issue
separate from East Alabama Living magazine, where we historically featured
weddings in the Spring issue. Now, I can give weddings and all things tied to
getting married its own spotlight.
In this issue, you will experience the joy and memories made by the many
couples presented. It should not be overlooked that large wedding parties and
lavish receptions are still on trend. Other trends showcased include elegant,
lush florals to the prominence placed on the simplest of details.
I am obsessed with the comeback of pearls on wedding gowns. Build-a-Bride
owner, Maryle Lee provided stunning dresses for two photo shoots which
emphasize this trend. ING Studios captures the trend beautifully in The Garden
Shop at Botanic in Opelika.
I am also obsessed with the emphasis on where to wed aka the venue. Our
cover wedding was held at Fountainview Mansion in Auburn. This stunning
old-English style mansion on a hill boasts contemporary touches making it a
canvass for one’s vision to come alive. Taylor and Blake’s wedding was a true
modern-day fairytale.
While I would love to name each one individually, the many vendors who work
behind the scenes to complete the perfect wedding is fascinating. Couples have
to consider where to be married, where to host the rehearsal to reception, who
will make the cake(s), catering, where to find THE dress (don’t forget the shoes),
choosing a ring that reflects their personality, selecting a wedding planner
and florist who understand their vision, and who will capture the memories.
Sounds daunting, right?
The pages of East Alabama Weddings feature the best vendor partners for those
preparing to say I do. They make getting married easy.
Whether you are planning a wedding or a 30-year anniversary celebration, do
it with love.
Play your best!
Madeline ElaineJohnson &
Nathanial David Warner
By Jess Margeson
MAY 21, 2022
On a beautiful, clear day on the sprawling grounds of Auburn
Oaks Farm, Nate and Madeline Warner exchanged vows in the presence
of both friends and family.
The young couple’s happiness was palatable to all present. As the
bride recalls, “For me, a personal highlight was that moment right
before I began walking down the aisle. As the church doors opened,
I was immediately greeted by the smiling faces of so many of our
dear friends and family, all gathered together in one place.”
As she remarks, “In that moment, I instantly recalled just how so
many of them had loved and supported the two of us, through so
many different aspects of our lives, all leading up to this day. Even
sweeter still-glancing past them to spot Nate sporting the biggest
smile on his face.”
The couple worked together to plan almost all aspects of the day,
ensuring that no detail was overlooked. And, in the end, their hard
work was rewarded.
As the bride recalls, “So many special touches added to our day,
but one of the most distinctive was the way we were able to honor
and incorporate both of my late grandmothers by incorporating an
heirloom wedding ring from one and earrings from another." In
doing so, the bride remarked that their presence was felt, even in
the midst of their physical absence.
She also heavily credits her support team, saying, “We had the
most incredible group of vendors. It was important to both of us
to select professionals local to the Auburn
area. Katy Blackburn and Ella Cobine with
Make it Perfect Events guided us through
the entire process and ultimately ensured
that our wedding day would be both beautiful
and stress-free.”
The bride continues, “Additionally,
Auburn Oaks Farm was the most beautiful
venue we could have ever envisioned.
Ali Rabren and her staff went above and
beyond to make sure everything ran
smoothly.” Indeed, the venue’s sprawling
grounds and immaculate clubhouse combined
to create a look and feel that was
both elegant and relaxed.
Both the bride and wedding planner,
Katy Blackburn, cite photographer, the
late Dylan Pegues, as another highlight of
the occasion. Warner recalls, “Our sweet,
incredibly talented photographer brought
peace and joy over our day in a way we will
never forget.”
As Blackburn confirms, “I have to agree
that this wedding was made even more
special because of their amazing photographer
who is tragically no longer with us.
What a precious gift Dylan was, and I often
find myself reflecting on that day just to
remember his smile!”
As the day came to a close, there could
be little doubt that a good time was had by
all in attendance. Blackburn recalls, “Nate
and Madeline were just the perfect couple
to work with. Occasionally, you come
across clients who also become friends,
and that was definitely the case here!”
DYLAN’S LEGACY
The D1 Life Foundation was established
in loving memory of Dylan Pegues, shortly
after his tragic death last summer. The
family along with the help of friends and
the community as a whole turned their
collective grief instead into a celebration
of the young man’s life and legacy.
Their stated motto to “Live A D1 Life”
reflects the founders' desire to inspire
others to raise their level of character,
leadership and love towards others while
also leading others to Christ. Additionally,
the foundation also seeks to provide
scholarship opportunities to high school
seniors preparing for college, as well as
other opportunities.
Taking its name from the highest category
of competition in college athletics,
the foundation simply encourages others
to, “Live Like Dylan And Love Like Jesus.”
Our Story
A BRIDE’S PERSPECTIVE
BRIDESMAIDS’ LUNCHEON:
My mom’s precious friends hosted my bridesmaids’ luncheon at
one of my favorite restaurants in Auburn, Lucy’s! It was the perfect
introduction to our wedding weekend, and I loved how our wedding
planner, Lisa Thorne, was intentional with every detail and
flawlessly wove our story into every aspect of the weekend. One of
my favorite details of the whole weekend was our guestbook. I had
spent what felt like months looking for a guestbook that I loved, but
couldn’t find one that I just loved. Then one day I came across “The
Book of Flowers” coffee table book. It was the most beautiful book of
botanical prints that I had ever seen and was HUGE. I immediately
knew that it would be our guest book. We displayed it at the bridesmaids’
luncheon so that all my bridesmaids would have a chance to
sign it. We also bought the mini version of the book as hostess gifts
for my mom’s friends who hosted the luncheon. Another huge part
of my bridesmaids' luncheon was, of course, the cake! I am an avid
baker and love to make cakes, so when it came to my bridesmaids'
luncheon, I knew that it had to be a focal point. I made a two tier
lemon elderberry cake with swiss meringue buttercream, but my
favorite part was the Southern tradition of the cake pull. I attached
charms to ribbon and placed them under the bottom layer of the
cake. Just before cutting the cake, each of my bridesmaids took
turns pulling a charm from the cake for a glimpse of what’s to come
in their future. My mom did this at her wedding, so it was special to
carry on this tradition.
REHEARSAL DINNER
The rehearsal dinner had the perfect flair of Louisiana, and
we loved every part of it. Avery’s mom and Lisa had an amazing
vision of a “Southern cocktail” crawfish boil, which was the
best mix of casual and formal. We started the night out on the
front lawn for cocktail hour, while a fantastic musician played
the saxophone the whole night. Avery had made two games of
cornhole, painted pastel, of course, and we had even made pastel
bean bags to throw! From cocktail hour, the saxophone led
us into dinner in the courtyard. I loved how the whole night
felt and the comfortable atmosphere that Pebble Hill provided!
Pebble Hill was an especially special place to our hearts because
Avery’s grandmother, Leah Atkins, was the founding director
of the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and
Humanities at Pebble Hill. We had two long tables for everyone
to sit at, and we wrote on lemon leaves to serve as escort
cards. Lisa even had a mini tabasco at every place setting. They
are made at Avery Island, after all! Our friends and family prepared
the best speeches that brought laughter and tears. We left
the night feeling so loved and ready for our wedding day as we
reflected on our time together with all of the people who were
part of our story.
EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS 25
THE WEDDING
Avery and I were high school sweethearts. We met in our
junior high in our English class and started dating when he
was 15 and I was 14. We went to every homecoming dance
and prom together. We love looking back through those
early pictures where we’re both in braces! After high school,
we both went out of state to college. He played football at
LSU and I went to Ole Miss. Dating long distance was hard,
but we made it work! By the time we were approaching our
senior year of college, we both knew we wanted to be married
right after graduation. Avery proposed in July at Lake
Martin, where we had enjoyed many sunsets over the years.
He had arranged an engagement party at my family’s lake
house with our best friends from college and high school! He
had convinced me that he wouldn’t propose until the fall, so
it was truly a surprise!
Because we had been dating for seven years, we had a long
time to dream about what we wanted our wedding to look
like. I knew immediately that I wanted to use Lisa Thorne
as my wedding planner and florist. I could tell from her
Instagram that we shared similar tastes and that she would
be able to take my vision and expand on it. We bounced ideas
off of each other right up until wedding week. We shared a
vision and she enjoyed perfecting it.
Throughout our entire engagement season, there were so
many special moments and details that we put together that
came into fruition on our wedding day. My mom did such
an amazing job of making the entire season fun and as least
stressful as possible! Starting from three days after we were
26 EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS
engaged, she and my sisters surprised me
with a trip to Charleston to try on wedding
dresses. We didn’t know much about
wedding gown shopping, but we made an
appointment with Modern Trousseau, and
it was an amazing experience. I loved the
very first dress that I tried on, but felt like
it was missing something. Little did we
know that the boutique we chose specialized
in custom wedding dresses. I was able
to take the dress I loved and add a handmade
lace Watteau train.
The day of the wedding came fast, but
the morning felt slow, in the best way! I
couldn’t wait to see my future husband, but
it was really special because I was able to
get dressed in my childhood bedroom. My
bridesmaids spent the night at my house
the night before our wedding, and my dad
continued the tradition of “Saturday morning
pancakes” and made pancakes for all of
us. Before we left my parents’ house, I gave
my mom and dad special gifts to remember
this season from. I gave my mom a
Herend wedding cake and a vintage frame
to put one of our wedding pictures in. I
am so thankful for her and all of our many
trips to Charleston for my wedding dress,
and the countless phone calls that would
go on for hours about the smallest details
for the wedding! For my dad, I gave him a
handkerchief that I hand-embroidered. It
was so sentimental to give him something
that I had made, especially because he had
spent so much time making all of the random
DIY’s I wanted for the wedding!
After spending the day having our hair
and makeup done at my parents' house,
we made our way to Moore’s Mill Club. I
was amazed at all of the décor and seeing
all of our planning finally come together.
As I walked into the space, I first saw
our wedding cake, beautifully made by
Cakeitecture in Opelika. They worked with
Lisa to create a yummy masterpiece. It
had many tiers of buttercream, cake, and
flowers - all of my favorite things! I made
Avery’s favorite cake for the groom’s cake.
Growing up, my dad had a chicken named
“Annabelle.” Because this family cake
recipe calls for so many eggs, it became
known as Annabelle Cake. I think I baked
it for Avery for every one of his birthdays
since he was 15, so it was only fitting that I
bake it for the wedding day!
EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS 27
Our ceremony was the perfect combination of traditional and
modern. We had the Cobalt Strings Quartet play our music. Our
moms and grandmothers walked down the isle to “She Will Be
Loved,” and Avery picked out the song I walked down the aisle to,
“Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.” We were both overjoyed,
nervous, and just ready to be married after seven years! The ceremony
was truly a story of us, and I couldn’t stop laughing and
crying during our vows! Avery still teases me about it! From the
ceremony, we had cocktail hour. During this time Avery and I
had a private dinner. It was so special to spend this time together
and reflect on everything that had just happened! From there we
jumped into the Second Line to enter our reception.
The Second Line was definitely mine and Avery’s favorite part
of the reception. Because he went to LSU and the majority of the
groomsmen were his teammates, we really wanted to bring some
Louisiana flair to the night. The band played “When the Saints
Come Marching In” as the bridal party followed behind. It set the
tone for the rest of the night. When we entered the reception, we
went from the jazz of the Second Line to our first dance, “You Are
the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. It was such a fun and upbeat
song, and we couldn’t stop smiling (or laughing!) throughout
our dance. It was such a surreal moment to share with my new
husband…and 250 of our closest friends and family!!
The band was from Atlanta and made the night such a celebration
for all of our friends from Auburn, Ole Miss, and LSU. From
“Mississippi Girl” to “Calling Baton Rouge” and “Sweet Home
Alabama” they kept the party going all night long! We danced
the whole night, and exited the venue in a vintage convertible. It
was so much fun running through the tunnel of all of the people
we loved most who helped make our wedding day everything
and more we could ever wish for!
After “do you knows?” and laughing
“where are your Moodys from?,” the couple
hit it off.
In May of 2021, after dating throughout
COVID and a direct hit from a tornado
on the home Kate was sharing with two
friends, Tyler proposed. The couple went
for a Saturday hike where they happened
upon a pre-planned picnic blanket with
Tyler’s guitar. He had written a song,
“Last First Date” for the occasion.
Slate and Lane helped plan a New
Year’s Eve wedding. Cotton and Pine
Creative printed invitations and a wedding
program. The ceremony was at the
bride’s home church Trinity Methodist
in Opelika with the reception at the
nearby Bottling Plant Event Center. The
Heritage House Bed & Breakfast, next
door to Trinity, was the perfect spot for
bridesmaids to stay and for pre-wedding
photographs.
The couple’s pastor, Brant Bonetti, also
the husband of a dear college friend of
Kate’s, performed the ceremony and their
daughter Edie was flower girl.
Guests enjoyed music from a string
quartet and joined in singing Great is Thy
Faithfulness and 10,000 Reasons to piano
accompaniment. The sanctuary inside
and out was adorned in emerald green,
cream and white flowers and ribbons and
large and small pinecones gathered by
the bride’s mother.
The same colors and decor continued
at the reception – all with a celebratory
New Year’s Eve theme laughingly dubbed
#happymooyear.
The bride’s parents, Scott and Patricia
Moody, welcomed guests while the dance
band Rupert’s Orchestra played until the
ringing in of 2022. Musician friends from
Nashville joined the band to sing the first
dance song.
The Bottling Plant served shrimp and
grits, bruschetta chicken, prime rib,
pasta, spinach and strawberry salad,
bread pudding and Conecuh sausage corn
dogs. The wedding cake was a simple one
with a small cascade of gold flakes. The
groom’s cake was chocolate and peanut
butter topped with buckeyes in a nod to
the groom’s Ohio upbringing. Both baked
by Barb’s Cakes.
With unseasonably warm weather,
guests strolled outdoors to the courtyard
to make s’mores. A 360 degree
slow-motion photo booth added to the
fun. And to keep the party going, midway
through the evening, beignets were
served and LED stick shakers and Happy
New Year crowns were offered.
When the clock struck midnight, balloons
dropped as the band played Auld
Lang Syne. Moments later with guests
chanting “Moody! Moody!” the bride and
groom departed – driving off as gerb firework
fountains lit the way.
The couple live in Nashville where Tyler
is a Christian music producer and church
worship director and Kate is a therapist
after receiving her master’s degree from
Vanderbilt University in 2022.
Madelyn Ann Swanson
& Frank McEwen
OCTOBER 22, 2022
Madelyn and Frank McEwen married on the 22nd of October,
2022, at First Presbyterian Church of Opelika with the reception to
follow at Twenty-One Acres in Auburn, Alabama. October 22nd was
a clear and crisp fall day with not cloud in the sky, one would say the
perfect day to get married!
Madelyn and Frank met at a summer retreat called Greek Classic
in 2021. Onward Campus ministry takes a group of college students
to the beach for two weeks every summer to build community, learn
how to read scripture, and pray about cultivating personal ministries
on Auburn’s campus. Madelyn, attending the trip as a student
the summer before her senior year, initially just thought of Frank as
the cute, older staff guy that was probably engaged or dating someone
else. Frank knew Madelyn as the best friend of his boss’s daughter
who was helping lead worship during the retreat. Over the twoweek
trip, the two continued to gravitate towards each other and
loved getting to know one another. On the last day of the retreat,
Frank asked Madelyn if she wanted to go on a date when they got
back to Auburn and the rest was history! The two dated through the
summer and into the fall, knowing in December that they wanted
to get married. They got engaged the following March and accomplished
planning a wedding in a short six months to be married in
Madelyn’s dream wedding month, October.
The couple both agreed that the highlight
of their wedding day was the private
dinner the two had after the ceremony,
before making an entrance at the reception.
The two got the opportunity to
debrief the day and share their first meal
together as man and wife. They enjoyed
the dinner provided by The Hound, one
of the couple’s favorite restaurants in
Auburn. McEwen and Son’s grit company,
Frank’s fathers’ family business, provided
the grits for meal making the dinner
even more sentimental. The couple then
greeted their guests and enjoyed their
wedding cake made by Madelyn’s sister
and celebrating to music provided by
ended the night by being sent off in a vintage
orange Bronco, headed to their honeymoon
in St. Lucia.
The joyous couple has settled into their
new homes and careers. Madelyn works
at Piedmont Midtown hospital as a nurse
in the emergency department and Frank
works as the director of operations for
Onward Campus Ministry. Getting settled
into their life as newlyweds, they are overwhelmed
by the Lord’s grace and kindness
in giving them each other and are looking
forward to living their lives to give the Lord
glory in all that they do.
Set against the quaint streets of Midtown
Auburn, these brides stun in their respective
custom gowns. Curated by Build-A-Bride
Auburn, the collective look is both elegant and
effortless, at the same time. For the floral selections,
Frou Frou owner and designer Jess Margeson opted
for bold blooms. These vibrant selections worked
in sharp contrast against the classic palettes of each
gown lending interest to each individual look.
which features a plunging neckline, paired
with a wide, natural waist band and flat-front
the box pleats serve to enhance the overall
look of the gown.
THE CODIE LEE
The Codie Lee is a sophisticated yet sultry,
trumpet style gown featuring both a
low neck and back, perfect for the more
modern bride. When styled with the
“Shaye Duet” belt comprised of hundreds
of hand-sewn, sparkling crystals and
pearls, the look features a nod to the
classic, as well as the contemporary.
Beautifully Stated
IN NATURE
By Jess Margeson
THE VENUE
Formerly of both Blooming Colors and
The Crepe Myrtle Cafe, King Braswell is a
local fixture in the field of Horticulture.
And it is exactly this catalog of knowledge
coupled with his design talents
that have combined to create a new horticultural
destination, known simply as:
Botanic. Pair his accolades alongside the
formidable talents of his wife and now
business partner, Stacy and the result is
nothing short of spectacular.
While still situated squarely in the
heart of Opelika, Ala., the venue nonetheless
boasts a completely unique look
and feel. One not confined to city limits
or location.
Which was the couple’s stated goal,
from the very start. The duo envisioned
the creation of a “Beautiful Botanical
Haven” while also incorporating sustainable
practices in the process. The project
commenced in 2019, with the shared goal
of combining their mutual passions into
the creation of something truly magical.
The duo has certainly succeeded in creating
just that. Botanic is a lovely oasis,
already embraced and adored by the
community surrounding it.
BRIDAL PORTRAITS
When selecting a location for Bridal
Portraits, move beyond the perfectly predictable.
Here, the bride glows against
the backdrop of The Greenhouse and
achieves images that are both elegant
and interesting as a result.
THE LOOK
When it comes to selecting a classic
gown with a custom touch, Build-A-Bride
has quickly become a go-to resource for
discerning brides.
Led by Auburn owner Marlye
Armstrong Lee, the boutique offers a
personal touch, coupled with a local
feel. As she explains, “Our gowns begin
clean and sleek but are transformed into
a work of art.”
Lee goes on to expound upon the
subtle differences in both looks featured
here, saying, “The Charlotte Kate," was
named so by Designer, Heidi Elnora.
When ask to describe it, Lee says that the
44 EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS
EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS 45
gown “Features a sheer tulle overlay with
hand-placed pearls running down the bodice
for a subtle, elegant sparkle”.
In contrast to the first gown, the
"Summer Whales" style of the second
selection features a trumpet style gown,
with a more dramatic neckline. Despite
some style differences, both looks sport
dainty pearl accents, which lend a timeless
and elegant look.
According to Elnora, pearls remain
timeless addition to any ensemble-which
explains the recent resurgence in their use,
throughout a variety of bridal pieces. Lee
concurs, noting that the creation of a custom
veil in this case, one with pearl accents
can also serve as an heirloom piece for generations
to follow.
THE FLORALS
Playing against the already beautiful
botanicals, Frou Frou owner and
designer Jess Margeson strove to evoke
a look in keeping with the surroundings.
In particular, her use of a single,
yet striking, orchid stem offered a focal
point for the bridal bouquet. The selection
also served as a subtle nod to the
surroundings.
According to the Margeson, there
continues to be a strong trend towards
the use of neutrals in wedding florals.
The classic combinations of white, ivory
and green continue to reign supreme,
with clients continuing to shy away from
bolder choices, at least as it related to
their floral décor.
In the end, all of these various elements
worked in concert to achieve a
look that was both unexpected and elegant,
all at once.
approach to jewelry selection.
EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS 49
Owned by Brooke Dilworth and Mallory Wilson, it is their collective
mission to tailor each experience to the individual.
As Dilworth elaborates, “Our private showroom space allows
us to focus on each client, offering a bespoke experience unlike any other.
Together, we will walk through each detail to ensure that the client makes
an educated and inspired choice. It is the very heart of why we exist-to help
clients tell their own story and preserve it in a meaningful way.”
Wilson concurs, saying, “At Dianne’s Jewelry, it is our desire to help celebrate
the shopper’s most memorable moments by creating and curating jewelry
to last a lifetime.”
And when asked what styles are currently most in demand, Dilworth confirms
that, “Oval diamonds, diamond halo mountings and solitaires of all
shapes and stones continue to be on trend and our most in demand styles.”
When working with grooms, Dilworth reports
that capturing a look that is both “classic and
timeless” tends to take top priority. Additionally,
she reports, “Grooms now arrive more educated
than ever before. And they too desire a personalized
experience as they select what will serve as
the foundational purchase of their marriage.”
As for brides, Wilson says, “Over the past year,
we have seen more clients requesting vintage
rings, especially those with old European cut center
stones. Brides are looking for distinctive pieces,
and we tend to agree- nothing quite compares to
the hand-fabricated details of antique treasures!”
"Many discerning brides are
set these rings and brides apart."
Additionally, many brides are now opting
for colored stones, rather than the more
traditional choice of a diamond. As she
explains, “Many discerning brides are
engagement rings, stones such as emeralds
and sapphires. Accented with a diamond
The Perfect Gift:

Luxury Linens
By Beth Witten
58 EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS
Most southern brides plan to carry a
handkerchief down the aisle. The custom
of a bride carrying a handkerchief
originated with the belief that a bride’s tears
would bring rain to the crops. Today, the act of
carrying a “hanky” is more simplistic. It is held
to wipe away the bride’s tears of happiness
and joy.
Luxury linens are a great gift idea for your
special bride. If you are attending a bar-themed
bridal shower, consider custom cocktail napkins.
Invited to a holiday-themed shower? Then,
consider a wreath sash that is original and
thoughtful. When you take the time to plan to
have specialty linens monogrammed, it shows
you care.
The Linen Press is the go-to source for elegant,
one-of-a-kind luxury linens. Two retired educators
bonded over their passion for beautifully
designed monograms. Kim Pennisi and Ann
Harrell, cofounders of The Linen Press, share a
love for fine linens, entertaining, and celebrating
others. The pair met in 2001 while working
for Auburn Junior High School in Auburn, Ala.
Ann lives in Beauregard, Ala., with her husband, a cattle
lives in Auburn with her husband and daughter.
Ann and Kim partnered to offer custom embroidery and
sustainable linens of the highest quality that can be used
for years. Although everything you’ll find at The Linen
Press is unique and custom, Ann and Kim want you to
embrace using linens daily. The quality of their linens will
withstand tailgate parties, pizza nights at home, and family
gatherings. The goal is to enjoy and make memories with
something you can use for supper or on special occasions.
Ann loves to take fine linens, create a unique monogram
design, and stitch an impeccable one-of-a-kind heirloom.
60 EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS
Kim loves to mix classic design with a slight touch of contemporary
flair for pieces made to treasure. Both of them delight in a timeless
and exquisitely stitched design.
The Linen Press can create unique designs and color schemes to
suit each customer. Whether purchasing a handkerchief for a bride
to carry on her wedding day, a guest towel for someone’s first home,
or table linens, these heirloom pieces can be passed down and
proudly used for generations to come. Ann and Kim love discovering
The Perfect Spot to Wed
Russell Lands:
By Jess Margeson
When dreaming of a destination wedding location, look no
further than beautiful Lake Martin. There, Russell Lands
offers a wide variety of venues-some boasting expansive
water views, while others are more natural and intimate. In fact, the
development spans over twenty-five thousand acres and includes
multiple venues, eateries and even an equestrian center.
SpringHouse

Although it is perhaps best known for its exceptional
Southern fare, SpringHouse also offers upscale event
spaces. In fact, patrons can peruse multiple locations (all
within the same property) depending on the desired look
and feel of their particular occasion.
Situated atop a hillcrest (and overlooking a large and
rolling hillside expanse), picturesque views abound from
a variety of vantage points. So, whether the occasion
spills onto the spacious front lawn or is more contained
to one of the covered patios, endless options abound.
Inside, the well-appointed interior features exposed
stone, rough-hewn beams, and an open kitchen.
Meanwhile, the property’s multiple outdoor areas also
provide patrons with a plethora of additional entertaining
options outdoors.
Seasoned wedding planner Katy Blackburn, Make It
Perfect Events confirms, “SpringHouse is an absolute
favorite of mine, hands down. Having recently done a
large-scale wedding there, I can attest to the fact that the
staff is stellar and the space itself is simply stunning.”
ideal space for the bridal party to relax and
enjoy the day. From hair and make-up to
mimosas over brunch, the entire bridal
The Stables
The Stables

For brides desiring a more rustic, but
still elegant celebration, The Stables offers
exactly that. The setting is truly one of a
kind and perfectly suited for the bride who
desires a natural setting without sacrificing
elegance. Additionally, the venue offers
both indoor and outdoor ceremony and
reception sites, making it quite versatile.
As Blackburn confirms, “The Stables
is another favorite of ours. We have been
privileged to direct several weddings there
and love utilizing both the lawn areas,
as well as the loft area. And much like
SpringHouse - stunning views abound in
every direction, which really elevates the
occasion overall.”
A Bridesmaids’ Brunch
By Jess Margeson
As Auburn residents will readily attest, the
secret is out-Lucy’s is far more than just
delicious culinary fare.
Indeed, the inspired eatery greets guests with a
unique blend of ambiance, paired with an exceptional
dining experience, both of which make it an
ideal selection for occasions of all sizes.
From bridesmaids’ luncheons to rehearsal dinners,
the space lends itself to a myriad of design
and dining options. In this case, guests are treated
to a delicate and dainty luncheon, honoring both
the bride and her bridal party. Housed in The
Larder Room portion of the restaurant, guests
enjoy privacy from other patrons while still being
treated to exceptional service.
Tables and chairs were easily reconfigured to
create a more formal feel, which also allowed for
the more expansive table décor.
According to the event designer Jess Margeson,
Frou Frou, the table design was intentional. The
longer, more linear lay-out was key in creating
both depth and interest. She also explains that it
is important in any design to employ a blend of
objects. Specifically, she suggests varying pieces
in both height and style, in order to create maximum
visual interest.
EAST ALABAMA WEDDINGS 69
Margeson suggests carefully considering
the existing space, when contemplating
all other design details. As she explains,
“Here, it was easy to play off the beautiful
and very crisp, clean tones already offered
in The Larder Room. Expanding on the
existing elements, the event décor then
simply adds to the elegance of the space.”
Our Story
AS TOLD BY THE GROOM
I met Ashlyn when I was 16. She was
the tall, beautiful, and smart sweetheart,
while I was your everyday high
school jock. Somehow, our relationship
lasted for the remainder of high
school and into college where we both
attended Auburn University. Around
the end of our first semester at Auburn,
Ashlyn and I, through much prayer and
counsel, came to the harsh reality that it
was time to break up.
Fast forward to the fall of our senior
year of college–I was sitting next to JT &
Michael (two of my groomsmen) at an
Auburn Football game in late October.
As all three of us stood to cheer on the
Tigers as they ran out of the tunnel, a
familiar face crossed my line of sight
walking down the concourse. The game
had not even started, but when I saw
those big brown eyes glance at me, I
knew the game was already over. We
did not cross paths again until Blake
and Rebecca Silver’s (both were in our
wedding) wedding in January of ‘21.
There, we met at the sandbox as we put
out our sparklers after sending our dear
friends off to their honeymoon. Before
I knew it, we were the last ones to leave
the reception that night.
CHRISTY K. TRUITT
The Best Four Letter Word
Ahhhhhh. Love. The most beautiful of four-letter words. Also, the most diluted in the Englishspeaking
language (based on a survey created and completed by me). I love cheese. I love sausage.
I love sausage and cheese on Tostito chips. I love Auburn athletics. I love a throwback tennis match
between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.
I love sunsets.
How do you deepen a word used for frivolous things? What makes it different to tell your children
you love them versus a green light when you’re 15 minutes late for work?
I’ll tell you how. It’s when you love during the tough times. When you don’t give up on someone who
lets you down. And by someone, I mean you. And me. When we fail ourselves.
When you don’t recognize yourself in the mirror. When your body has plumped out from babies
and age and gravity. When disease leaves train-track scars where your breasts used to be. When
intimidation creates doubt in the job you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Previous failures elbow their
way forward in your identity. When you yell at your children and cry yourself to sleep.
When you can look at this unrecognizable crazy person in the mirror and blow her (or him) a kiss on
your way out of the door, then you, my friend, know a very deep feeling of love.
I don’t love a green light that turns to red. I hated when Pete Sampras would lose. And I despise
when Auburn falls to any opponent. But I’ve grown to love myself even at my worst. I’d never turn
my back on my children. And even though the moon wipes out a sunset, I know the sun will bring
another one the next day.
