Kojiro Umezaki ’91 writes pieces for computer and shakuhachi, a bamboo flute he plays in a world-music collective founded by a famous cultural ambassador. Katie Todd ’00 is a pianist, singer, and leader of a jazz-rock band popular among MySpacers and YouTubers. All have a Japanese connection. Umezaki grew up in Tokyo. This year, Fast released collector’s editions of his records in Japan. One of Todd’s songs is covered by a Japanese guitarist in an Internet video. And all three had pivotal musical experiences at Lafayette. Fast sharpened his producing skills as a WJRH engineer. Umezaki sharpened his improvisa- tional skills in a student jazz group.
