Claster ’46 died Aug. 14,2007, and Joseph J. Baumann ’47passed away March 17, 2010.Fred Magley ’46 took some time offfrom sailing on Lake Canandaigua, N.Y.,where he lives, to let us know he isplanning his 16th work trip to theYucatan with a church group and hopesto visit Vietnam in the spring.Betty and I attended the 50-PlusClub Reunion Dinner. Saw a few oldfriends and sang some of the nostalgicsongs we all know so well. I was pleasedto see that the joint project between<strong>Lafayette</strong> and the City of Easton toredevelop the area on Third Street at thefoot of <strong>College</strong> Hill is taking shape. A retiredcertified computer consultant, he waslisted in Who’s Who in Business and hadowned several businesses. Alvin served inthe Army in World War II. Jim and his wife attended our60th reunion and saw John Wynn, JimMadara, Jack Bennett, Norm Harpster,their wives, and Jack Fitzgerald.Bill Van Buskirk laments that noneof his close college friends are still alive.He reminisced about his wartimeservice, which included Pearl Harbor.Bill Johnston of Fullerton, Calif.,noted the recent obituary for EugeneMiller. Gene was his first roommate inSouth <strong>College</strong>. He thinks that Genewon a 1947 Plymouth during hisfreshman year.Robert Morris, originally fromPhillipsburg, lives in Doraville, Ga. Bobhas lived in Pennsylvania, California,South Carolina, and now Georgia. Someof his ancestors lived in a house on thePhillipsburg hill across from the <strong>College</strong>.John Williams Jr. of <strong>Lafayette</strong> Hill,Pa., passed away April 29. He was aretired engineering consultant andconstruction manager at MontgomeryCounty (Pa.) Community <strong>College</strong>. Hewas also the former vice president andgeneral manager of weighing and controlsand the executive vice president of STVInc. John attended University of Virginiaalso and received a master’s in civilengineering at Lehigh University. Heserved in the Navy during World War II.He was a member of Tau Beta Pi andSigma Chi fraternities and numerousengineering societies. John’s wife,Cora; daughter, Judi; and son, Scot; twograndchildren; and a great-granddaughtersurvive him.Karl LaBarr died May 10 inBethlehem Township, Pa. After <strong>Lafayette</strong>,he attended Dickinson School of Law atPenn State and was an attorney in privatepractice in Easton before retiring. He alsohad served as solicitor for the city ofEaston and served in the Navy duringWorld War II. He was on the board ofTwo Rivers Health and WellnessFoundation. His wife passed away in2008. Surviving are a son, Paul, daughtersLisa and Jill, and four grandchildren.Robert Helman of Bethlehem, Pa.,passed away May 13. After a long careerwith Bethlehem Steel, he retired in 1982as superintendent of laboratory servicesin the research department. He beganhis career with the company in 1950as a member of its Loop Course. In1954, he transferred to the researchdepartment as a research engineer inthe product development division. Hewas promoted to manager of laboratoryservices in 1977. He worked onprojects involving product and processimprovements of wire, sheet, plate, pipe,and plastics. After retirement, he workedpart time as an adjunct professor atNorthampton Community <strong>College</strong> andas an adjunct instructor at <strong>Lafayette</strong>. Amechanical engineering graduate, he waselected to Tau Beta Pi honor society. Hewas a World War II veteran in the Army’sarmored corps. His wife of 54 years,Joan, survives him, along with daughtersCarol and Jane, and five grandchildren.Robert Salathe passed away June 28in Concord, N.H., After serving in theNavy during World War II, he graduatedwith a bachelor’s in mechanicalengineering and later earned a master’sfrom Newark <strong>College</strong> of Engineering atRutgers. He pursued a career withMonsanto Research Corp., GE, andGTE, from which he retired. Whileworking for GE, he designed controlsystems and components for fuel cellpower plants for the Gemini SpaceProgram, receiving several patents in hisname. His favorite hobby was modelrailroading. He also enjoyed designingand building systems, such as a solarelectrical system or kitchen cabinets. Hisother interests included golf, bridge, andBoston-area sports teams. Wife Marjorie,daughter Leslie, son Mark, stepdaughterDebra, stepson Jonathan, and sixgrandchildren survive him.Claude Rogers Jr. of Carlisle, Pa.,passed away July 4. After serving in theNavy during World War II, he earned anelectrical engineering degree. Upongraduation, he joined Sperry RandCorp. as a field engineer. He retiredafter 35-plus years with the company.He was active in Boy Scouts andreceived many awards for his service.Claude’s wife, Jean, to whom he hadbeen married for 60 years, predeceasedhim. Daughters Cynthia and Laura, sonsDavid and Richard, six grandchildren,and a great-grandson survive him.John Cleaver died May 4 inSouth Bend, Ind. Hewas the retired associate pastor of FaithChurch in Sun City, Utah.William T. Powell, 83, formerly ofEaston, passed away in Nottingham,N.H., June 24. He served in the Armyin Japan at the end of World War IIbefore getting his degree in chemistry.His wife, Gail, three children, and 14grandchildren survive him. George reports that thestudent recipient for the <strong>Class</strong> of 1953scholarship is chemistry major andlacrosse player Meghan Curtin ’14.The amount awarded was $2,863. The1953 scholarship at press time had abook value of $25,509.67 and a marketvalue of $47,646.86.Donald Gold died in June.No further details were available.Norman Heyman wrote that heretired from Lord, Abbott & Co., aninvestment firm, in 1993. However, hecontinued his entrepreneurial bent andrescued an electromagnetic company,which was eventually sold to a Swedishconglomerate in 1998. Norman marriedDorothy Goodman in 1972, which madehim an instant father and grandfather;he now has five grandchildren and threegreat-grandchildren. He revels in theaccomplishments of his children, oneof whom won a Pulitzer and anotheran Emmy.Norman and Dorothy, who havetraveled the world, live in Peter CooperVillage in New York City. They spendmost weekends in Fayson Lakes innorthwest New Jersey, where they hostfamily members. Jay was amechanical engineer from Tiverton, R.I.After graduation, since both Bob and Jayhad a passion for the aerospace industry,they sought employment with GrummanAircraft, on Long Island. At that time, Jaydid graduate work at Polytechnic Instituteof Brooklyn. A few years later, he movedto the Fairchild Engine Division, also onLong Island, and worked on the J83turbojet. Jay graduated to Fairchild’sStratos division and later relocated toDayton, Ohio, and United AircraftProducts. He eventually became a vicepresident at Sundstrand Corp. inRockford, Ill. When Sundstrand laterbought the small engine product line ofSolar Turbines Inc., Jay was named headof the new products operations, whichtook him and the family to a new home inSalano Beach, Calif. In later years, Jay andBob, in spite of their close friendship,were ardent competitors in major salescampaigns, such as the Boeing 767,Hughes Apache, and Lockheed F-16.Jay’s wife, Gloria, one son, threedaughters, and several grandchildrensurvive him.After five years with Grumman, Bobmoved to Phoenix, Ariz., and joinedGarrett Corporation’s AiResearchdivision, which makes gas turbines andturbine-related equipment. In the ’80s,Bob was promoted to senior projectengineer for new applications, sellingauxiliary power units for commercial andmilitary aircraft and helicopters. Bobadmits that there were times when Jay’scompany, Sundstrand, took lucrativebusiness away from his company. Theycontinued to cross paths and business“swords” over the years, as recently asAugust 2010. Bob and his wife, Beth,visited Jay and Gloria in California.Steve Rader, M.D., practices inBerkeley, Calif. He and Jack Bocher,M.D., roomed in McKeen Hall, acrossthe hall from Jay Batley, CarmineGaccione, and Don Mitchell in theirfreshman year. After his internship, Stevetook a residency in psychiatry and stillworks three days a week as a communitypsychiatrist. He and wife Wilma are well.Jim Murphy said he had a smallstroke but is nearly fully recovered, withno apparent signs of paralysis. Afterretiring from Scott Paper, Jim took aposition in the office of Bishop RoyAlmquist of Southeastern PennsylvaniaSynod of the Evangelical LutheranChurch. He referred to his seven years inthe role as the most satisfying of his life.Jim, who is regularly in touch withSandy Smith, says that Sandy and thelate Bob Machiorlette attendedkindergarten together in Nutley, N.J.,where they and Rich Masters grew up.Jim regularly sees a popular ’Pard fromthe <strong>Class</strong> of ’54, Don Cornelius. Whilein the service, Don was a jet pilotserving on carriers. He now interviewsand recommends candidates for thefour military academies.Jim and Janet had lunch withDon Veitch’s widow, Joyce, and herdaughter Kim. Jimreports that Neil “Shark” Alexander’sson Corey ’95 does stand-up comedy inhis spare time and was at <strong>Lafayette</strong> whenJim’s daughter, Cara Murphy Dunaway’96, attended. Jim continues to keep intouch with Dieu Khuong-Huu andNorm Hume’s widow, Dorie, whoresides in West Chester, Pa., near threedaughters and grandchildren.Jack Mitchell reports that he andwife Judith are well. They live inAndover, Mass. After <strong>Lafayette</strong>, Jack wasassigned to Fort Benning, Ga., for thebasic officers training, yet four monthslater applied to flight school. This tookhim to San Marcos, Texas. After laterassignments, and his marriage duringa tour at Fort Devens, Maine, Jackdeployed to Korea to fly with theKorean Military Advisory Group.While serving at Fort Rucker, Alaska, heearned his captain bars. Later training onhelicopters opened the door for a twoyearassignment in Munich, Germany,followed by a tour in Vietnam. When hereturned stateside and retired from themilitary, Jack began a 30-year careerwith Eastern Airlines and US Airways, asa captain. In all, he had 21,000 militaryflight hours, including his 28 years inthe reserve. Jack retired with the rankof colonel. He would love to hear fromSigma Nu brothers, including JohnYerger, roomie Bob Donnelly, andEvan Hineman.Harold Hartman traveled backto his home state of Pennsylvania,including stops in Hazleton and OilCity. As a native of Port Royal, northof Harrisburg, he felt mixed emotionson selling the family homestead there.Misty Sayenga wrote that his wife,Carlene, had knee replacement surgeryin the Lehigh Valley. Misty logged morethan 7,000 miles driving betweenBethlehem, Pa., and their home inTucson. En route, he spoke at TexasA&M for an international symposiumon wire rope. After leaving Texas, hetouched down in Natchitoches, La., fortime with Fred Hunt. On his return toBethlehem, Misty had lunch with JoeBozik ’58 and two of his children.After some substantial conversationwith Bryan Satterlee over mutualconcern for escalating costs of PatriotLeague football, Misty wrote toPresident Daniel H. Weiss discussinga return to two-way football and a33-player cap, which would cut costsand provide a role model for smallerschools and their leagues.Lee Kane connects with SaulCooperman, who keeps him informedabout the conflict between Israel and thePalestinians.One of the highlights of the 50threunion was Wayne Erb and Paul“Tarz” Hewitt exchanging tales of theiryears as military pilots. After graduation,Wayne completed military flight schooland Army advanced officer courses.After eight years as an infantry officerand a pilot, he began a career as acommercial pilot. In 1969, a flight hepiloted was hijacked, which forced alanding in Cuba. Passengers and crewwere held hostage for what was thelongest hijacking on record at the time.Another memorable event from Wayne’sprofessional life was meeting thelegendary Gen. Jimmy Doolittle.Tarz earned a graduate degree instrategic studies from the Naval War<strong>College</strong> before serving more than 29years as a Navy aviator and in variouscommand positions. He retired with therank of captain. Later, he served on theboard of directors of VyStar CreditUnion.Thank Kit Green for organizingReunion Weekend, with help fromGordon Wright. Kit was elected classpresident, succeeding Dick Graham,who deserves three cheers for doing agreat job.Also present at the reunion were Billand Donna Florence. Bill practices lawand has no plans to retire yet.Tom Hays and Alice did a lot ofreminiscing with Tom’s Alpha Chi Rhoroomy, Gordon Wright. Tom hails fromEmmitsburg, Md.Warren Mann attended with hiswife, Leslie.Gerald Purdon and Nancy rolled infrom Atlanta. After graduation, Geralddid graduate work at Clark Universityand retired as a senior vice president ofBank of America.Mihran Mooradian won afellowship and also earned a master’sat Clark. He and his wife, Ovsanna,attended reunion. Mihran’s Theta Deltroomies, Pete Reeves (and Elizabeth),John Devlin (and Suzanne), andMorgan Larson, also came.Bill Hardy and wife Pat came all theway from Texas. After Bill earned hisbachelor’s in civil engineering, he did astint in the Army. He later got a master’sfrom New Jersey Institute of Technology.He and Pat have a daughter and twosons. Son William III is a 1985alumnus.Bud and Sally Jost made the tripfrom Snyder, N.Y., near Buffalo. Bud’sroomie Dr. Jake Hannemann and hiswife, Jude, dropped in from Maine.(Bud’s and Jake’s other roommates wereWillard Snyder ’55 and the late BillFarmer.)Bud retired as CEO of Health Careand Social Services Organization inwestern New York. He received hismaster’s in social work from Penn in1958. At the same time, Jake was atJefferson Medical <strong>College</strong>. He retired as aradiation oncologist in Portland. He andJude live in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Jakevolunteers as a general practitioner oneday a week in a free clinic, and Judeteaches English and American Literature.Willard retired from Wyeth and A. H.Robbins, and lives in Webster, N.Y.Forrest “Lou” Shaeffer, a nativeof Hazleton, Pa., attended reunion.He received a master’s from Syracuse. Heand Anne retired to New Cumberland,Pa. Another face that peeked out of myphoto album was Jack Graham ’54, achoir colleague.Two students received <strong>Class</strong> of 1956Scholarship assistance during the 2010-11 academic year. Elizabeth L. Blake’12 from Downingtown, Pa., is a doublemajor in French and psychology, whoachieved a 4.0 average in fall 2010.The highlight of her junior year was asemester in Paris. Her grandparents,Gordon and Mimi Wright, visited herduring her semester abroad. In herapplication for aid for her senior year, shenoted that she is an officer in her sorority,participates in the <strong>Lafayette</strong> admissionsambassador program, is involved instudent government, and performs with<strong>Lafayette</strong> Chamber Singers.The other 2010–11 scholarshiprecipient is Alexander L. Osuchowski’13, a civil engineering major who playson the baseball team. Though Dougthreatened to handicap them, they wonthe low score by a wide margin.The class golf outing at Morgan HillGolf Club included 21 golfers. JohnCunningham had the longest drive,and Hugh Richardson and Lew Gillwon closest to the pin contests. Secondplace went to the team captained by EdBaumgardner, which included his wifeTrudy, Nyce, and Richardson. Thoughthe class was unsure which team BobIves played on, he happily collectedprizes. Theamount given or pledged to the classgift was $145,167, and the total givento the unrestricted annual fund was$66,669. Other gifts assigned to theclass amounted to $2,235.The 141 donors represent 68.5% ofthe 206 solicited members of the class.Last year, participation was 49.5%, and$73,927 was given.Jim Sorrentino is the new reunionchair. Auble plans to stay active with theclass; he currently chairs the AlumniAssociation’s International Committee.The other class officers were reelected.The <strong>College</strong> now supports a 55threunion, but the officers hope toarrange get-togethers each year, one ofwhich will probably be at Homecoming.Ed Ahart ’69, chair of the Boardof Trustees, was the guest speaker. His first wife, Sue,died tragically in 1990, along with hermother, in a plane crash in Costa Rica.Peter has three children and sevengrandchildren.Denis Gordon works as an attorney,specializing in labor arbitration. Hereceived his law degree from Universityof Pennsylvania and worked with theDepartment of Justice before enteringprivate practice.Pierre Pelanne saw a few of his SAEbrothers at reunion. He and wife Peggy,both retired, live in Williamsburg, Va.Pierre had a long, successful career withthe United Nations and lived inConnecticut. The Pelannes have twosons, who are doing well in business.Gary Ludlow died peacefully athome in April from cancer. He livedin Bath, Ohio. His wife of 48 years,Martha, two daughters, and fourgrandchildren survive him. Ludlowwas born in Bernardsville, N.J., andwas a high school national championsharpshooter with a .22-caliber rifle. He retired in 2010.Ludlow was an avid golfer and playedmany of the top courses in America.John Hiller died in July from atraumatic brain injury he suffered after afall while hunting for turquoise inArizona. Hiller was a member of PhiBeta Kappa. He was a chemical engineerand received a Ph.D. in organicchemistry from Case Institute. He spentmost of his career formulating chemicalsfor consumer products, many of whichare still on the market and well-known.He worked at Phillip Morris, CalgonCorp., Yardley of London, Lehn &Fink, and Eastman Chemical. Hiller wasmarried for 45 years to Mary and hadtwo children. He enjoyed foreign travel,spending vacations in his motor home,and rock hunting, especially for opals.Dr. Elliot Marcus passed away inAugust after a long illness. He lived inVestal, N.Y., with his wife, Peggy, andhad two children and four grandsons.Marcus grew up in Maspeth, N.Y. Hegraduated with a degree in psychologyand was a member of Pi Lambda Phifraternity. He attended TempleUniversity School of Dentistry and thenserved two years in the Air Force beforemoving to Vestal, where he establisheda family dental practice in 1969. About 15years ago, Don wrote Values-DrivenSafety, a book discussing why lossprevention was actually about culture.Those ideas led to wider applicationsand, last year, in collaboration with Zetefraternity brother and friend DougNagan, who has expertise in riskmanagement, they presented at TheEconomist Conference in New YorkCity, detailing how an organization’sculture is its destiny and how tomeasure that culture. The pair’s workwas recognized by Office of theInspector General of the Department ofDefense as one of only two systems itendorses. <strong>Class</strong> <strong>Notes</strong>1967–1970Neil Meade, after more than 30years in private practice as a primarycare physician in Maryland, accepted aposition with Indian Health Services onthe Navajo reservation in New Mexico.Neil had always wanted to work withNative Americans, even though it meantgiving up his suburban Maryland lifefor life on the high desert plains of NewMexico. So far, he says, “It has been anamazing and enriching experience.”On March 1, Andy Sirpis succumbedto brain cancer. A government and lawgraduate, he was president of KappaSigma during his junior and senior years.Andy participated in ROTC, served twoyears in the Army, and was dischargedwith the rank of captain. He thenearned his master’s in management fromRensselaer and became a financial plannerfor Connecticut General Life InsuranceCo. He retired from its successorcompany, Lincoln Financial, in 2006.He then became COO for WashingtonGroup, a subsidiary of MassachusettsMutual, where he remained until hisdeath.Andy began dating his future wife,Helene Scourby, while an undergraduate.One of the first in the class to marry, heand Helene were married for nearly 44years. The two-acre sitehas 43 plots for community gardening;the rest is open to <strong>Lafayette</strong> studentswho want to grow healthy, pesticidefreeproduce. Leftovers from the dininghalls are composted for use in thegarden. The project recently received$56,000 in grants from United StatesEnvironmental Protection Agency,Clinton Global Initiative University,and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.Grant monies will fund a wateringsystem and purchase compost bins andother supplies. Extra food from thegarden is donated to Safe Harbor,a homeless shelter in Easton.Christopher Vecchio is a currencyanalyst for DailyFX.com. He analyzesforeign exchange markets, whilekeeping an eye on political and financialtrends. He also uses technical analysisto ascertain the most accurate shortandmedium-term predictions.Kristen Linderoth was promotedfrom director of basketball operationsto assistant women’s basketball coachfor University of New Hampshire.Travel the World with Fellow AlumniThe Alumni Travel Program’s fall trip to China included three nights in Beijingfollowed by two nights in Xi’an, two in Guilin, a three-day Yangtze River cruiseaboard the Century Sky, and two nights in Shanghai.“The trip was very interesting,” says Dan Headington ’64, accompanied by hiswife, Dodie. “Many people are leaving farms and moving into the cities where theylive in high-rise apartment buildings that stretch as far as you can see, that is, on dayswhen the smog is not heavy.” He also noted that because of the “one-child policy,”the country now has a large senior population supported by a smaller workingpopulation. Henry Sobel ’73 and his wife, Pat, also enjoyed the trip.Other exciting trips planned for 2012 include:River Life along the Waterways of Hollandand Belgium (April 17–25), will include Floriade2012, the world horticultural exposition heldonce every 10 years. Travelers will board the M.S.AmaLyra for such destinations as Amsterdam’shouse-lined canals, historic windmills of Kinderdijk,and Bruges, one of the best-preserved medievaltowns in Europe.Cruising Alaska’s Glaciers and the Inside Passage(June 21–28) aboard the M.V. Silver Shadow includesthe historic towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, and Sitka. Along the way, passengers may seewhales, harbor seals, sea lions, and eagles in theirnatural habitat.
