<strong>Class</strong> <strong>Notes</strong>1962–1963finance as a corporate treasurer, thecompanies David worked for wereacquired, and he returned to managinginvestment portfolios for individuals,trusts, and IRAs. He is now at ThreeLakes Advisors Inc.Don Eckenfelder notes that at 70,when most people are done with acareer, he has just started. About 15years ago, Don wrote Values-DrivenSafety, a book discussing why lossprevention was actually about culture.Those ideas led to wider applicationsand, last year, in collaboration with Zetefraternity brother and friend DougNagan, who has expertise in riskmanagement, they presented at TheEconomist Conference in New YorkCity, detailing how an organization’sculture is its destiny and how tomeasure that culture. The pair’s workwas recognized by Office of theInspector General of the Department ofDefense as one of only two systems itendorses. In addition, New Zealandlabeled Don “Safety’s CulturalAmbassador,” and in Australia, abusiness partner, Kelvin Blackney, hasapplied these principles in preventingbush fires and minimizing their damage.For more, see www.culturethesos.com.Next year, Don and wife Barbara willcelebrate their 50th anniversary. Theyhave four children and 19 grandchildren.The Eckenfelders are members of LDSChurch and have two grandsons servingchurch missions in Moscow and SantaMaria, Brazil. Don serves as a bishop inthe Glens Falls ward.Doug Nagan lives in Deep River,Conn., with his wife of 48 years,Anne. They have two children andfour grandchildren. Doug works inresearch and consulting (see www.naganresearchgroup.com) and recentlypublished, eERM–effective EnterpriseRisk Management.Paul and Carolyn Spiecker traveledto Cape Ann, Mass., in August to visitPaul’s brother Ray Spiecker ’65 and hiswife, Judy, and their family. Ray’s eldestdaughter, Karen, and her two boys arevisiting from Austria, where she liveswith her husband, Josef Sterl. Theywork in dairy farming on the borderwith Germany. Ray and Judy live inGloucester, Mass., near Plum Cove andRockport. Ray’s other daughter, Robyn,and son Chris live nearby in NewHampshire and Massachusetts. InSeptember, Paul and Carolyn plannedto travel to Houston to visit their sonMatt ’95 (a chemical engineer andPh.D.), his wife, Sandra, and theirdaughter, Anna, 6, and son, Alex, 3.Matt attended graduate school at NorthCarolina State and is a research engineerwith Exxon in its upstream researchdivision.In preparation for the 50th reunionand golf challenge next year, TomBurns wrote about a warm-up golfevent held June 12 in southernCalifornia. Members of the 45threunion chemical engineers hit the linksat Torrey Pines, North, the Grand atDel Mar, and Encinitas Ranch golfclubs. Bob Kauffman hosted FrankSarubbi, Tom, and guest (subbing forJim Lyttle, who was unable to makethe trip). Bob’s home in Leucadia,Calif., overlooks the Pacific Ocean.Jim Lyttle notes that Frank, wifeCheryl, and daughter Angela visited hisfamily in New York City. He also saysthat the SAEs meet regularly abouttwice a year and will next meet inOctober for a football game and dinnerin Easton. He expects Chuck Brick,Walt Doleschal, Harry Irwin, DaveLowe, Jim Montgomery, Jim Reeve,and Greg Shannon will attend, withhopes to see Ted Lundberg and KenPoppe.Neil Goldstein writes: “My darlingwife, Janet, is on her fourth year with atransplanted kidney and doing just fine.My son Bill is working in New York,married with twin boys, and—believe itor not—living in Narberth, Pa., andcommuting to New York five days aweek. My daughter, Lauren, works andlives in Brooklyn, N.Y. She has consultedfor Martha Stewart <strong>Magazine</strong>. Bret ’89works in Philadelphia as an attorney andhas given me three more beautifulgrandchildren. I am still practicing lawand enjoying a decreased schedule,playing tennis and catching up onreading and my hobby of collectingminiature soldiers. I still plan to get toNew York to see my roomie FreemanShore.”Barry Aronowsky writes: “My wifeand I had lunch in June with my formerroommate, Judge Morris “Mickey”Stern, and his wife, Ronnie. Mickeylives in New Jersey, and I live on LongIsland, so we met in New York City. Imet my wife, Barbara, shortly aftercollege, and we were married in 1964.We have three children and fivegrandchildren, all of whom live onLong Island.”Bruce Vakiener writes: “The end of2010 saw my third retirement. My firstwas in 1999, after 29 years with LoctiteCorporation. I started in 1970 as atechnical service engineer selling specialtyadhesives and sealants, and total saleswere $10 million. At the end of myLoctite years, the company had over $1billion in sales. During my career, Ibecame president of the northern Asia/Pacific region, responsible for Japan,Taiwan, Korea, China, and India, livingin Japan and Hong Kong. I retired asexecutive vice president.“Twelve hours later, VakienerAssociates LLC was operating as aninternational business consulting firm.I operated that company until retiringin 2006. I successfully completed manyassignments helping other U.S.enterprises to expand overseas.“My latest ‘retirement’ was as aboard of directors member for BicronElectronics Co. of Canaan, Conn., amanufacturer and marketer of solenoidsand transformers. I was on Bicron’sboard for over 10 years.”Bruce adds he now teaches CPR/AED and first aid part time forNorthampton Community <strong>College</strong>and is an assistant captain of his localambulance squad. He and wife Katemoved to Nazareth, Pa., four years agoto be near their five grandchildren.The 50th reunion for the <strong>Class</strong>of 1962 will be June 1–3, 2012.1963D.
