<strong>Class</strong> <strong>Notes</strong>1950–1953and co-authored several technicalpublications. After retirement, he workedpart time as an adjunct professor atNorthampton Community <strong>College</strong> andas an adjunct instructor at <strong>Lafayette</strong>. Amechanical engineering graduate, he waselected to Tau Beta Pi honor society. Hewas a World War II veteran in the Army’sarmored corps. His wife of 54 years,Joan, survives him, along with daughtersCarol and Jane, and five grandchildren.Robert Salathe passed away June 28in Concord, N.H., After serving in theNavy during World War II, he graduatedwith a bachelor’s in mechanicalengineering and later earned a master’sfrom Newark <strong>College</strong> of Engineering atRutgers. He pursued a career withMonsanto Research Corp., GE, andGTE, from which he retired. Whileworking for GE, he designed controlsystems and components for fuel cellpower plants for the Gemini SpaceProgram, receiving several patents in hisname. His favorite hobby was modelrailroading. He also enjoyed designingand building systems, such as a solarelectrical system or kitchen cabinets. Hisother interests included golf, bridge, andBoston-area sports teams. Wife Marjorie,daughter Leslie, son Mark, stepdaughterDebra, stepson Jonathan, and sixgrandchildren survive him.Claude Rogers Jr. of Carlisle, Pa.,passed away July 4. After serving in theNavy during World War II, he earned anelectrical engineering degree. Upongraduation, he joined Sperry RandCorp. as a field engineer. He retiredafter 35-plus years with the company.He was active in Boy Scouts andreceived many awards for his service.Claude’s wife, Jean, to whom he hadbeen married for 60 years, predeceasedhim. Daughters Cynthia and Laura, sonsDavid and Richard, six grandchildren,and a great-grandson survive him.John Cleaver died May 4 inSouth Bend, Ind. Daughters Leslie,Lisa, and Danielle, and son Johnsurvive him.Richard West ’53 and HenleySmith ’51 reported the death ofWilliam Fischer July 11 in Hightstown,N.J. Bill, Richard, and Henley wereDUs at <strong>Lafayette</strong>. Bill was a retired Navypilot with the rank of commander,having served during the Korean War.He was a teacher at Middletown (N.J.)Township High School and a professorof physics at Brookdale Community<strong>College</strong>, retiring in 1990. In highschool, Bill played football, ran track,and was elected King of the Prom. Heplayed football at <strong>Lafayette</strong> andgraduated with a bachelor’s in English.He taught physics, which he learnedfrom his pilot’s training in aerodynamics,electronics, and navigation. He earnedmaster’s degrees from RutgersUniversity and Trenton State <strong>College</strong>.Bill’s wife of 59 years, Peggy; son, Fred;daughters, Maggie, Ann, and Nancy;four grandchildren; and brother survivehim.1951 John B. A retired mechanicalengineer, Bob designed and constructedat least nine ocean tankers to help supplyfuel for Exxon around the world. Since1968, he lived in Basking Ridge, N.J.During the Korean War, he served in theNavy on a carrier. A life member of TauBeta Pi honor society, he volunteeredwith Deborah Hospital Foundation,Browns Mills, N.J.Gerald Bordman, 79, another SigmaChi, passed away May 9. He was a scholarand author of some 10 books, includingthe definitive American Musical Theaterand others on musical comedy.The Rev. Dr. Jay Confair, 80, passedaway June 21 in Peoria, Ariz. He wasmarried to his first wife, Dorothy, for 57years. His second wife, Harriet, surviveshim. Jay graduated from McCormickTheological Seminary in Chicago. Hewas the retired associate pastor of FaithChurch in Sun City, Utah.William T. Powell, 83, formerly ofEaston, passed away in Nottingham,N.H., June 24. He served in the Armyin Japan at the end of World War IIbefore getting his degree in chemistry.His wife, Gail, three children, and 14grandchildren survive him. He workedfor several companies, including GE,where he was involved with spacecraftand satellites. His interests included bigbands and sports.1953 Leon H.
