For their futureretirement, the Riddles also have agarden apartment near a golf course inNaples, Fla. Marvin works part time inEaston and enjoys golf with friends.Peter Wolfe is as feisty as ever—soreports his younger brother. Unfortunately,Pete has Parkinson’s. He and Bettyreside at a retirement home inWyomissing, Pa.Jim Zilli is remarried and lives inIrving, Calif. Retired from Fluor Corp.as senior director–projects, his finalproject was a detailed basic engineeringpackage for the Hermanca Upgrader atJose, Venezuela. The project received abest-in-class award. Jim volunteers withthe Santa Ana SCORE chapter and playsgolf. His two sons also live in California,and his daughter is a nurse and lives withJim’s ex-wife in Albuquerque, N.M.Richard P. “Dick” Barbor diedOct. 17 in Glen Mills, Pa. An avidoutdoorsman, hunter, and angler, heloved to roam the Pennsylvania fields,forests, and streams. Dick was a memberof Clymer Hunting Club and NationalRifle Association. After receiving hisbachelor’s and master’s (University ofDelaware) in chemical engineering, hejoined Sun Co., retiring in 1986 from theresearch and development division astechnical assistant to the division director.He held several U.S. and Canadianpatents. Dick was a Kappa Sigma. InKorea, he was an army combat veteranin the 461st Infantry Battalion. He wasdecorated with the Bronze Star, CombatInfantryman’s Badge, and Purple Heart.A longtime Republican Party committeemember, he also served on ChesterCounty Development Authority. He wasan active participant in youth activities:YMCA Indian Guides, Great Valley LittleLeague, and Boy Scouts. He loved music,particularly jazz (played saxophone,clarinet, and piano), and performed in abarbershop quartet. His wife of 52 years,Jeanne; children Richard, Dean, Susan,and Carolyn; two brothers; and fivegrandchildren survive him.Franklin Schock Follmer diedJuly 18 in Reno, Nev.—10 days after hiswife, Doris, passed away. His children,Michael Thomas, Sharon Conrads, andChristine Abbot; four grandchildren;two great-grandchildren; and a nieceand nephew survive him. Aftergraduating from Lower Merion (Pa.)High School, Frank enlisted in theArmy, which took him to New Zealand,Australia, India, and China. After hisservice, he graduated from <strong>Lafayette</strong> andthen studied at the Sorbonne. Hemoved to Casablanca to build air bases.He earned an amateur radio license inEnewetok, Marshall Islands, and was aradio announcer for a year in Mexico.Frank met Doris in Reno when heattended Ag Aviation Academy at SteadAir Force Base. Married in 1968, theyhad three children. Frank’s final positionwas as planning coordinator for the stateof Nevada, retiring in 1994. He wasactive in Carson City Rotary Club,the Episcopal Church, Kairos ChristianPrison Ministry, ham radio, flying smallplanes, and playing guitar.William G. Freund died Aug. 18.Born in Trenton, N.J., Bill was a Navyveteran of World War II. After receivinghis bachelor’s in mechanical engineering,he got a master’s from Pitt andspecialized in design of waste-handlingmachinery for paper, aluminum, andglass. He enjoyed acting in and designingsets for Burlington County Footlighters,Bordentown Community Players, andPalmyra Bridge Players. He was an activemember of Knights of Columbus anda lector for St. Paul’s Roman CatholicChurch. His favorite pastimes weremaking wooden signs with a colonialand nautical flavor and entertaining hisgrandchildren. His wife of 60 years, Anna;children William, Lawrence, and JosephFreund and Ina Cochran; and sevengrandchildren survive him.David B. Jennison died Dec. 12,2008. His first wife, Betty, and hissister, Sally Ritter, predeceased him.His wife, Janet; daughters DruryMacKenzie and Cynthia VanUllen; sonsMichael and Todd Jennison; brotherPhillip; stepchildren Nancy Brown andDeborah Diehl; 12 grandchildren, fourstep-grandchildren; and one greatgrandchildsurvive him.William J. McCarter died April 21,2011, from cancer. He was a decoratedofficer with the 45th Infantry Divisionduring the Korean War. As a Chicagotelevision innovator, he turned WTTW-TV into a powerhouse, leading thestation for 27 years and building it intothe most-watched public televisionstation in the country. He developed arange of programs, including SneakPreviews, The McLaughlin Group, andSoundstage. Under his watch, WTTW andits WFMT-FM radio counterpart received12 George Foster Peabody Awards, fiveDuPont Columbia Journalism Awards,150 regional Emmy Awards, and fiveCINE Golden Eagle Awards. He retiredin 1998. In June 1996, Bill presented theCandidate Free Time model to theFederal Communications Commissionat a nationally televised hearing. Heencouraged other public televisionstations to follow WTTW’s lead and helpvoters make informed decisions. Prior toWTTW, he served as president and CEOof WETA-TV/FM and held programmingpositions at WHYY in Philadelphia,WNET in New York City, and ABCtelevision network. Bill often spoke of hisstart in his native Philadelphia with DickClark’s American Bandstand. Bill’s wife,Linda, predeceased him. Daughters AmyCostello and Juli McCarter, son Max, andthree grandchildren survive him.Robert L. Owens died March 12,2011.Daniel Jean “Albie” Pellarin diedAug. 21 in Aiken, S.C. His wife of63 years, Phyllis; daughters Jan Riesche,Jill Pellarin, and Judy Stern; son DanielJr.; eight grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildrensurvive him. He grew upin New Hampton, N.Y., and attendedGoshen High School. He received amaster’s from University of SouthCarolina. A World War II veteran,Dan served in Tokyo. As a nuclearphysicist at Argonne National Laboratoryand the Savannah River Plant, he was amember of Material Research Society andAmerican Nuclear Society. He was alecturer at University of South Carolina–Aiken, where he taught math andengineering, and was a volunteerwith Aiken Area Council on Aging.Henry Beveridge Phelps diedFeb. 21, 2011, in Ocala, Fla. Born inCambridge, Mass., he graduated fromLoomis Academy. He received a Ph.D.from Columbia University and served inthe Army. Henry was appointed directorof clinical psychology for HowardFamily Services, Burlington, Vt. He latertaught psychology at Castleton StateTeachers <strong>College</strong>, retiring as chair of thepsychology department. He opened thefirst Apple Computer retail store inVermont. Schwarz died July 12.Born in Stuttgart, Germany, he came tothe United States in 1940. He attendedErasmus Hall High School in NewYork City and graduated <strong>Lafayette</strong>with a bachelor’s in engineering.He was a veteran of the Korean War.His professional career included servingin IBM branch management in Detroit,as president of Citizens MortgageCorp., and as senior vice presidentwith Index Futures Corp. His bookon trading interest futures promotedthe concept for the Chicago Board ofTrade. His books were used as textsat universities, and he often spoke atindustry conferences. He worked asa consultant in the financial industry andwas a member of the New York MercantileExchange. Upon retirement, he acceptedassignments with International ExecutiveService Corps in Guatemala and Ecuador.He built houses in Bridgeport, Conn.,for Habitat for Humanity and workedat Norwalk (Conn.) Probate Department.Edward was a member of Temple Israeland YMCA Men and Topnotch Group.His wife of 54 years, Shirlee; son Tom;daughter Carolyn Tisdale; and fourgrandchildren survive him.Joseph John Worek died May 7.Joe was born in Trenton, N.J. His wife of 55 years,Elizabeth; three sons; a daughter; andseven grandchildren survive him.Howard A. Greenwald passed awayJune 26. He was born in Bronx, N.Y.,and moved from Flemington, N.J., toFlorida in 2001. Howard was owner ofBradford Press Inc., Flemington. Hiswife of 57 years, DeeDee; daughterGaye; and sons Jeffrey and M. In November,Gene met Clark Conlon and hisgrandson at the <strong>Lafayette</strong>–Colgatefootball game.Bruce Williams long ago sold hisseat on the stock exchange and has spentthe last 30 years in search of New Jerseyfolk art, collecting 1,000 old huntingdecoys. He also paints flowers,butterflies, and Kenya’s animals and builta 4,000-square-foot home addition.Bruce writes articles on the history ofhunting decoys.In September, Phil Schneider hadlunch with Dick Rathemacher, DanSanftleben (see photo online), and theirwives at Manasquan River Golf Club,Brielle, N.J.Cary Ahl has been married to Nellie,queen of our 1954 Interfraternity Ball,for 57 years. They have five children and14 grandchildren and have lived in thesame 18th-century house in Lancaster,Pa., for 52 years. Cary has been in thenonmetallic minerals business sinceleaving the military and now has twosons in the same business. He won boththe Lancaster Golf Club and LancasterCounty senior golf championships.Nellie started a successful business calledGardensheds, now shipping nationwide.Cary has kept in touch with Bill VanBreda Kolff.Gabriel “Gary” Avram enjoys his2003 retirement, playing tennis with hiswife, Pat, and golfing. Their two sonsare attorneys.Donald Romano retired 21 yearsago from New York state governmentservices. Don and wife Marilyn live inAlbany, N.Y., and own a second homeat Lake Luzerne in the Adirondacks. Hespent 46 years as a high school track andfield official. Those whoknew him remember his pleasure intelling about his father’s birth two yearsbefore Custer’s Last Stand and hispaternal grandfather’s saloon inDeadwood, S.D., during the goldmining boom in the 1870s and ’80s.Ed was an enthusiastic angler.Don Dates died Nov. 9. His wife of47 years, Suzanne, survives him, alongwith his brother, Chester. A mathgraduate, Don worked for AtlanticRichfield Company in research anddevelopment before taking time out toattend Wharton School of Business.After receiving his master’s, he took aposition with Wellington ManagementCo. as a financial analyst. FollowingWellington’s merger with Thorndike,Doran, Paine and Lewis, the Datesfamily moved to Wayland, Mass.,where they lived for 30 years. Don’slast position was with KeystoneInvestment Management Co. as vicepresident and director of research.Upon retirement, Don and Suzannemoved to Chapel Hill, N.C. He enjoyed a notable legalcareer: chairman of PennsylvaniaLiquor Board, chief counsel ofPennsylvania Department of Revenue,and deputy attorney general of theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania.In 2009, he celebrated 50 years as amember of Northampton County andPennsylvania Bar associations. He wasalso active in Our Lady of PerpetualHelp Roman Catholic Church. Inaddition to Dorie, three daughters(including Dana Roscioli Fischer ’85and the Honorable Paula Roscioli ’87)and five grandchildren survive him.Our condolences to families andfriends of these departed classmates.After <strong>Lafayette</strong>, Dr. John Yergerheaded south to Temple UniversitySchool of Medicine, where he also did hisinternship and a residency in pathology.He settled in Johnstown, Pa., joining thestaff of Conemaugh Hospital. He andBarbara are happy in retirement. Wereminisced about a couple otherEastonians, Ray Howe ’54 andDr. Bob Potter ’54.Dr. Ron Keyser—who lives inHagerstown, Md.—works in School-Based Wellness Centers, of which thereare 20 in Maryland. He itineratesbetween three schools in WashingtonCounty, involving seven clinic sessions.Since the services were established,studies show attendance and graduationrates have improved significantly. Thecenters also provide mental healthcounsel, family planning, and dental care.Tony Brodfuhrer makes his home inLake Lure, N.C., with wife Karla, whohas struggled with declining health inrecent years.Industrial engineer Charlie Sitkinhas visited Israel and Mekong RiverDelta and taken an 18-day tour ofFrance and Switzerland. He is nowpresident of Seattle’s not-for-profitregional theater, which will sponsor aHarold Pinter Festival in 2012.Bill Cromey sent a photo (see online)of his and Beverly’s visit in May to theYukon Territory, Alaska, where hecelebrated his 77th. Upon their return toFair Oaks Ranch, Texas, Bill resumed hisjob with Coldwell Banker and added hisvoice to an all-volunteer choir that singsat veterans hospitals and nursing homes.Armin “Rick” Kuder is partner atKuder, Smollar & Friedman,Washington, D.C., and wife PeggyTrossen is executive director of theArmy Women’s Foundation. Armin’sfirm provides counsel in family law andits derivatives. For years, Armin has putin a lot of pro bono time and also teachesfamily law. Until recently, he was theonly lawyer on the international steeringcommittee of Bone and Joint Decade,which is devoted to raising globalawareness of musculoskeletal diseases.In addition to increasing his visits tothe golf course, Armin is devotingmore time to Peggy, his children, twostepchildren, and five grandchildren attheir Delmarva Peninsula home, nearOcean City, Md. He invites ’56ers whovisit D.C. to stop by.Ed Landis bumped into <strong>Class</strong>President Kit Green, Gordon Wright,John Devlin, and Howie Fredericksat football games. He lamented notgetting to see Lee Kane. Ed reportsthat Saul Cooperman volunteered fortwo weeks in Israel before heading toFlorida for winter. Ed is on thecommittee for the All-Years SATBChoir Reunion planned for March2013. Phil Gehman, director of TheGraduates, is one of the organizers.Kit Green has an ambitious plan for areunion this fall to mark 60 years sinceour arrival at <strong>Lafayette</strong>. It likely will beon a football weekend. The weekendwill begin with a Thursday dinner andmight include a meeting with currentstudents and getting a closer look at thevision for <strong>Lafayette</strong>, possibly includingan audience with President Daniel H.Weiss. In lieu of atailgate, we enjoyed a brunch, thegame with Fordham, and dinner.Alan Pesky presented an address atthe winter 2011 commencement of BoiseState University’s <strong>College</strong> of Education.During the ceremony, Alan and wifeWendy presented gifts of $2,000 eachto four distinguished K–12 teachers aspart of the Pesky Award for InspirationalTeaching. Students in the college’s<strong>Class</strong>es of 2011 and 2012 had theprivilege of nominating teachers who hadinspired them to pursue teaching careers.Alan was a founding partner and retiredas president and COO of Scali, McCabe,Sloves, an international advertisingagency. He has been a <strong>Lafayette</strong> trustee, amember of the Board of Overseers of TheTuck School of Dartmouth <strong>College</strong>, andcurrently serves on the boards of theNational Center for Learning Disabilities,Global Grassroots, and The Brain TumorFoundation. Wendy retired as owner andpartner of Farmhouse Collection Inc.,was vice president of creative services ofAvon Corp. and vice president of creativemarketing at Parfum Stern, and is aboard member of Sun Valley Centerof the Arts. The class continues its efforts tohave Jack (football and baseball) named tothe Maroon Club Athletic Hall of Fame.Dan Hays sent me some letters hefound in correspondence belonging tohis father, Howard K. Hays ’31. Thefirst letter was sent in 1942 to WilliamMather Lewis, president of <strong>Lafayette</strong>,imploring him to maintain high standardsof education at the <strong>College</strong> so Dan mightbenefit from the best possible collegeexperience. Howard notes his father-inlaw,Daniel A. Kline, <strong>Class</strong> of 1902,was about to enjoy his 40th reunion at<strong>Lafayette</strong>. There also were two lettersresponding to Howard’s letter, signedby Lewis himself. In 1947, Howard senta letter to President Ralph CooperHutchison thanking him for a copy ofPresident Lewis’ book From a <strong>College</strong>Platform. Hutchison’s acceptance of the“generous gift for the Alumni Fund andthe New Era Program” was signed andsent to Howard in August 1947. The<strong>Class</strong> of 1957 will proudly donate theseletters to the <strong>College</strong> during our 55threunion this June.William C. Berg passed awayNov. 21 in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Bornin Bronx, N.Y., in 1929, the Korean Warveteran joined our class in 1953,graduating as a civil engineer. After having to explain whereI lived to family, friends, and clients, itwas good to find someone who knewwhere I was.Gary expressed something I hearfrequently: a desire to return to the<strong>College</strong> “one last time, see all thechanges, and revisit old haunts.”The first fellow freshman I met at<strong>Lafayette</strong> was Don Ohnegian. He and Iformed the “Big 10,” which could bestbe described as an “anti-Calumet specialinterest group.” Meeting at the oldpower plant near Jenks Hall, we hatchedelaborate midnight schemes, whichcame to naught. Don joined Delta TauDelta, played football at guard, graduatedwith a bachelor’s in government andlaw, served his Army time, finishedRutgers School of Law, and finallymarried Betsy. (She was all he talkedabout when I first met him.) Theyhave three children, Debra OhnegianBennett ’90, Scott (Amherst, 1992),and Peter ’94, who served as <strong>Lafayette</strong>’sstrength coach after graduation.Sadly, Don succumbed to cancerDec. 13, 2010, at his home in Ramsey,N.J. As I lived in Ramsey when hebecame ill, I visited him. He hadcontinued practicing law and was activein town government and county politics.Since both of Don’s sons playedfootball, the family established a scholarship,the Donald C. Ohnegian ’60Memorial Scholarship Fund forLeadership, which will be awardedto an outstanding football playerfor his senior year. Garrettplanned to retire from his position thispast January. He obtained his law degreefrom Duke University School of Law andbegan his legal career as a law clerk to theHonorable Vincent S. Haneman of NewJersey Supreme Court. He was with theU.S. Attorney’s office, District of NewJersey, from 1969 until 1973, and thenpracticed with Stryker, Tams and DillLLP. Garrett served as general counselfor the U.S. Government Printing Officefrom 1983 until 1985, was appointedchief counsel for the U.S. MaritimeAdministration in 1983, and was namedacting maritime administrator in 1985.John Oskam passed away Aug. 11.He was a starting offensive linemanon our football team and played inthe 100th game against Lehigh.John worked in the mining industryfor 40 years. He started his career atKennecott Copper in Hayden, Ariz.,for which he was senior engineer. Hebecame superintendent of operationsfor Barton Mines, North Creek, N.Y.,and over the next 14 years rose to theposition of vice president of operationsand engineering. With a move in 1981 toLakeland, Fla., John became managerand subsequently vice president ofVermont Talc Co., an ancillary of SwissownedPluess-Staufer. After the sale ofVermont Talc, Pluess-Staufer asked himto move to the Far East to becomemanaging director of Asia–Pacific.John established joint ventures in Korea,Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia, whileliving in Hong Kong.
