Class Notes1956–1957A government and law graduate, heattended law school at GeorgetownUniversity. He enjoyed a notable legalcareer: chairman of PennsylvaniaLiquor Board, chief counsel ofPennsylvania Department of Revenue,and deputy attorney general of theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania.In 2009, he celebrated 50 years as amember of Northampton County andPennsylvania Bar associations. He wasalso active in Our Lady of PerpetualHelp Roman Catholic Church. Inaddition to Dorie, three daughters(including Dana Roscioli Fischer ’85and the Honorable Paula Roscioli ’87)and five grandchildren survive him.Our condolences to families andfriends of these departed classmates.After Lafayette, Dr. John Yergerheaded south to Temple UniversitySchool of Medicine, where he also did hisinternship and a residency in pathology.He settled in Johnstown, Pa., joining thestaff of Conemaugh Hospital. He andBarbara are happy in retirement. Wereminisced about a couple otherEastonians, Ray Howe ’54 andDr. Bob Potter ’54.Dr. Ron Keyser—who lives inHagerstown, Md.—works in School-Based Wellness Centers, of which thereare 20 in Maryland. He itineratesbetween three schools in WashingtonCounty, involving seven clinic sessions.Since the services were established,studies show attendance and graduationrates have improved significantly. Thecenters also provide mental healthcounsel, family planning, and dental care.Tony Brodfuhrer makes his home inLake Lure, N.C., with wife Karla, whohas struggled with declining health inrecent years.Industrial engineer Charlie Sitkinhas visited Israel and Mekong RiverDelta and taken an 18-day tour ofFrance and Switzerland. He is nowpresident of Seattle’s not-for-profitregional theater, which will sponsor aHarold Pinter Festival in 2012.Bill Cromey sent a photo (see online)of his and Beverly’s visit in May to theYukon Territory, Alaska, where hecelebrated his 77th. Upon their return toFair Oaks Ranch, Texas, Bill resumed hisjob with Coldwell Banker and added hisvoice to an all-volunteer choir that singsat veterans hospitals and nursing homes.Armin “Rick” Kuder is partner atKuder, Smollar & Friedman,Washington, D.C., and wife PeggyTrossen is executive director of theArmy Women’s Foundation. Armin’sfirm provides counsel in family law andits derivatives. For years, Armin has putin a lot of pro bono time and also teachesfamily law. Until recently, he was theonly lawyer on the international steeringcommittee of Bone and Joint Decade,which is devoted to raising globalawareness of musculoskeletal diseases.In addition to increasing his visits tothe golf course, Armin is devotingmore time to Peggy, his children, twostepchildren, and five grandchildren attheir Delmarva Peninsula home, nearOcean City, Md. He invites ’56ers whovisit D.C. to stop by.Ed Landis bumped into ClassPresident Kit Green, Gordon Wright,John Devlin, and Howie Fredericksat football games. He lamented notgetting to see Lee Kane. Ed reportsthat Saul Cooperman volunteered fortwo weeks in Israel before heading toFlorida for winter. Ed is on thecommittee for the All-Years SATBChoir Reunion planned for March2013. Phil Gehman, director of TheGraduates, is one of the organizers.Kit Green has an ambitious plan for areunion this fall to mark 60 years sinceour arrival at Lafayette. It likely will beon a football weekend. The weekendwill begin with a Thursday dinner andmight include a meeting with currentstudents and getting a closer look at thevision for Lafayette, possibly includingan audience with President Daniel H.Weiss. Kit and Robin have soldtheir condo in Berkeley Heights, N.J.,and are now at Point Pleasant on theJersey Shore.At a Phi Delta Theta reunionon Homecoming weekend, I sawJake Hannemann and Jude, ArtHerrmann and Ann, Bud Jost,Charley Myers, Norm Riley andLinda, Gordy Brown ’57 and Delia,Joe Bozik ’58 and Peg Marcin, BillKurtz ’58 and Lucille, and RussWells ’59. Our wonderful chef, AldoCostantino, and wife Mary joined us.It was our fifth reunion in five years forPhi Delts from the 1950s. In lieu of atailgate, we enjoyed a brunch, thegame with Fordham, and dinner.Alan Pesky presented an address atthe winter 2011 commencement of BoiseState University’s College of Education.During the ceremony, Alan and wifeWendy presented gifts of $2,000 eachto four distinguished K–12 teachers aspart of the Pesky Award for InspirationalTeaching. Students in the college’sClasses of 2011 and 2012 had theprivilege of nominating teachers who hadinspired them to pursue teaching careers.Alan was a founding partner and retiredas president and COO of Scali, McCabe,Sloves, an international advertisingagency. He has been a Lafayette trustee, amember of the Board of Overseers of TheTuck School of Dartmouth College, andcurrently serves on the boards of theNational Center for Learning Disabilities,Global Grassroots, and The Brain TumorFoundation. Wendy retired as owner andpartner of Farmhouse Collection Inc.,was vice president of creative services ofAvon Corp. and vice president of creativemarketing at Parfum Stern, and is aboard member of Sun Valley Centerof the Arts. In 2007, Alan and Wendywere honored as Idaho’s outstandingphilanthropists by Association ofFundraising Professionals.Keep me posted on your doings. Class Notes1957–1958Class of 1957 will once again be able todemonstrate why it is one of Lafayette’sgreatest classes. Working with Dave Cary,I have updated the class email/addressand telephone list, which Dave hasentered on our class website. Pleasesend me an email or call to update yourinformation. Details about updating theClass of 1957 biography book will besent in early spring.Jim Pursell retired from IBM,where he “helped design fancy fuzzbustersfor military jets and served onadvisory committees to NATO.” Herecently married his 49-year partner,Richard Schaal, and they live in a restored1855 farmhouse in Oswego, N.Y.F. David Patch and his wife of50 years, Eileen, are happily retiredand live in Endwell, N.Y. David’s careerincluded presidencies of two corporations,Uneek Solutions Inc. and Tuss Inc.Late October was a special time asit included the dedication of OechsleCenter for Global Education, with akeynote lecture by Mikhail Gorbachev;Marquis Founders Dinner; Homecoming;55th reunion planning; and RonRudderow’s induction into Sociétéd’Honneur. The following attendedat least one of those events: Stu Murray,Bill Gano, George Tiger, Phil Wolfe,Gordie Brown, Russ Smith, WalterOechsle, Gary Evans, and this columnist.Kenneth Milhous and wife Gerryretired after 40 years of Christianmissions in Japan. In June, theyreturned to the country for a twomonthterm as volunteers with disasterrelief teams following the devastatingearthquake and tsunami.Jim Vorosmarti in Marylandreceived a “check on how you didwith Hurricane Irene” call from BobRios in Guatemala.Hank Darlington completed theEast Coast fund-raising cycling trip,indicating the first two-thirds hadterrible weather but “the ride downA1A in Florida was the best.”Neil Alexander ’56 forwarded anews release from Lower Merion HighSchool in Ardmore, Pa., announcingRichard E. Fitzgerald (“Dick,”“Fitz,” “HIPPO”) was inducted intothe school’s Baseball Hall of Fame.Dick played for Charlie Gelbert atLafayette before turning professional.He still plays hardball.Gordie Brown was part of the1956 team honored by Friends ofFootball in mid-October. Skip Ellisonand Mike McCooey attended. Gordieand Skip shared the names of deceasedclassmates also honored: Jim O’Brien,Bob Brougher, Al Stephens, TomGood, Hugh Gallagher, and JackSlotter. The class continues its efforts tohave Jack (football and baseball) named tothe Maroon Club Athletic Hall of Fame.Dan Hays sent me some letters hefound in correspondence belonging tohis father, Howard K. Hays ’31. Thefirst letter was sent in 1942 to WilliamMather Lewis, president of Lafayette,imploring him to maintain high standardsof education at the College so Dan mightbenefit from the best possible collegeexperience. Howard notes his father-inlaw,Daniel A. Kline, Class of 1902,was about to enjoy his 40th reunion atLafayette. There also were two lettersresponding to Howard’s letter, signedby Lewis himself. In 1947, Howard senta letter to President Ralph CooperHutchison thanking him for a copy ofPresident Lewis’ book From a CollegePlatform. Hutchison’s acceptance of the“generous gift for the Alumni Fund andthe New Era Program” was signed andsent to Howard in August 1947. TheClass of 1957 will proudly donate theseletters to the College during our 55threunion this June.William C. Berg passed awayNov. 21 in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Bornin Bronx, N.Y., in 1929, the Korean Warveteran joined our class in 1953,graduating as a civil engineer. Aftera number of years in nuclear and fossilfuel generation, Bill became a regionalpaving engineer with Portland CementAssociation. He retired as executivedirector and CEO of American CementPavement Association. His wife of56 years, Ann, and many childrenand grandchildren survive him.Charles R. Doty Jr. passed awayApril 5, 2011.Wayne H. Hainley passed awayNov. 30 in Linwood, N.J. Wayne was abusiness administration graduate andretired as president of Schuylkill HavenTrust Co. He was a past commodoreand active member of the Yacht Clubin Ocean City, N.J. Wife Patricia,two children, and two grandchildrensurvive him.Douglas McGill passed awayOct. 26 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.Born in Philadelphia in 1935, thiscivil engineer’s 40-year career inmanagement of industrial and municipalutility operations took him around theworld. His wife of 10 years, Dianne, anda large extended family, which includesthree great-grandchildren, survive him.Edward V. Sayers Jr. passed awaySept. 14 in Lewisville, N.C. Born inHartford, Conn., in 1934, Eddie wasa successful businessman and owner, anairplane pilot, a Duke basketball fan,and a devoted family man. His wife of54 years, Dorothy, and many childrenand grandchildren survive him.Robert P. Stearn passed awayNov. 5 in Chesterfield, Va. Bob was anindustrial engineer and received hisMBA in 1961 from Northeastern,where he later taught. He specialized incomputer systems. His career includedjobs at Armstrong Industries and ScottPaper Co. and installation of hundredsof computer systems while serving as aconsultant for the bar associations ofNorth Carolina and Virginia. His wifeof 54 years, Betty; three children; andsix grandchildren survive him.Glenn Fatzinger’s wife, Harriet,passed away July 10 after a brief fightwith cancer.
