<strong>Class</strong> <strong>Notes</strong>1957–1958<strong>Class</strong> of 1957 will once again be able todemonstrate why it is one of <strong>Lafayette</strong>’sgreatest classes. Working with Dave Cary,I have updated the class email/addressand telephone list, which Dave hasentered on our class website. Pleasesend me an email or call to update yourinformation. Details about updating the<strong>Class</strong> of 1957 biography book will besent in early spring.Jim Pursell retired from IBM,where he “helped design fancy fuzzbustersfor military jets and served onadvisory committees to NATO.” Herecently married his 49-year partner,Richard Schaal, and they live in a restored1855 farmhouse in Oswego, N.Y.F. David Patch and his wife of50 years, Eileen, are happily retiredand live in Endwell, N.Y. David’s careerincluded presidencies of two corporations,Uneek Solutions Inc. and Tuss Inc.Late October was a special time asit included the dedication of OechsleCenter for Global Education, with akeynote lecture by Mikhail Gorbachev;Marquis Founders Dinner; Homecoming;55th reunion planning; and RonRudderow’s induction into Sociétéd’Honneur. The following attendedat least one of those events: Stu Murray,Bill Gano, George Tiger, Phil Wolfe,Gordie Brown, Russ Smith, WalterOechsle, Gary Evans, and this columnist.Kenneth Milhous and wife Gerryretired after 40 years of Christianmissions in Japan. In June, theyreturned to the country for a twomonthterm as volunteers with disasterrelief teams following the devastatingearthquake and tsunami.Jim Vorosmarti in Marylandreceived a “check on how you didwith Hurricane Irene” call from BobRios in Guatemala.Hank Darlington completed theEast Coast fund-raising cycling trip,indicating the first two-thirds hadterrible weather but “the ride downA1A in Florida was the best.”Neil Alexander ’56 forwarded anews release from Lower Merion HighSchool in Ardmore, Pa., announcingRichard E. Fitzgerald (“Dick,”“Fitz,” “HIPPO”) was inducted intothe school’s Baseball Hall of Fame.Dick played for Charlie Gelbert at<strong>Lafayette</strong> before turning professional.He still plays hardball.Gordie Brown was part of the1956 team honored by Friends ofFootball in mid-October. Skip Ellisonand Mike McCooey attended. Gordieand Skip shared the names of deceasedclassmates also honored: Jim O’Brien,Bob Brougher, Al Stephens, TomGood, Hugh Gallagher, and JackSlotter. The class continues its efforts tohave Jack (football and baseball) named tothe Maroon Club Athletic Hall of Fame.Dan Hays sent me some letters hefound in correspondence belonging tohis father, Howard K. Hays ’31. Thefirst letter was sent in 1942 to WilliamMather Lewis, president of <strong>Lafayette</strong>,imploring him to maintain high standardsof education at the <strong>College</strong> so Dan mightbenefit from the best possible collegeexperience. Howard notes his father-inlaw,Daniel A. Kline, <strong>Class</strong> of 1902,was about to enjoy his 40th reunion at<strong>Lafayette</strong>. There also were two lettersresponding to Howard’s letter, signedby Lewis himself. In 1947, Howard senta letter to President Ralph CooperHutchison thanking him for a copy ofPresident Lewis’ book From a <strong>College</strong>Platform. Hutchison’s acceptance of the“generous gift for the Alumni Fund andthe New Era Program” was signed andsent to Howard in August 1947. The<strong>Class</strong> of 1957 will proudly donate theseletters to the <strong>College</strong> during our 55threunion this June.William C. Berg passed awayNov. 21 in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Bornin Bronx, N.Y., in 1929, the Korean Warveteran joined our class in 1953,graduating as a civil engineer. Aftera number of years in nuclear and fossilfuel generation, Bill became a regionalpaving engineer with Portland CementAssociation. He retired as executivedirector and CEO of American CementPavement Association. His wife of56 years, Ann, and many childrenand grandchildren survive him.Charles R. Doty Jr. passed awayApril 5, 2011.Wayne H. Hainley passed awayNov. 30 in Linwood, N.J. Wayne was abusiness administration graduate andretired as president of Schuylkill HavenTrust Co. He was a past commodoreand active member of the Yacht Clubin Ocean City, N.J. Wife Patricia,two children, and two grandchildrensurvive him.Douglas McGill passed awayOct. 26 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.Born in Philadelphia in 1935, thiscivil engineer’s 40-year career inmanagement of industrial and municipalutility operations took him around theworld. His wife of 10 years, Dianne, anda large extended family, which includesthree great-grandchildren, survive him.Edward V. Sayers Jr. passed awaySept. 14 in Lewisville, N.C. Born inHartford, Conn., in 1934, Eddie wasa successful businessman and owner, anairplane pilot, a Duke basketball fan,and a devoted family man. His wife of54 years, Dorothy, and many childrenand grandchildren survive him.Robert P. Stearn passed awayNov. 5 in Chesterfield, Va. Bob was anindustrial engineer and received hisMBA in 1961 from Northeastern,where he later taught. He specialized incomputer systems. His career includedjobs at Armstrong Industries and ScottPaper Co. and installation of hundredsof computer systems while serving as aconsultant for the bar associations ofNorth Carolina and Virginia. His wifeof 54 years, Betty; three children; andsix grandchildren survive him.Glenn Fatzinger’s wife, Harriet,passed away July 10 after a brief fightwith cancer.
