One idea: a securetrophy case to display the swordbelonging to the Marquis de <strong>Lafayette</strong>,which is in storage. “The class gift couldbe a beautiful, theft- and fire-proofdisplay case, probably in the Library,with a bronze plaque indicating it wasa gift of the <strong>Class</strong> of 1963, and maybealso provide an annuity for some curatorto update the contents with otherMarquis’ memorabilia, also in storage.”Paul Barrett, Bill and TrudyRutledge, and Fred and Dana Dayattended the Marquis Founders Dinnerin October. John received a Ph.D. inhistory from Clark University and spent33 years on the staff of the AmericanAntiquarian Society, an independentresearch library in Worcester, Mass.He retired in 2006 as vice presidentfor collections and programs and nowresides in Shrewsbury, Mass.When I was at the <strong>College</strong> in Octoberfor a Leadership Council meeting andthe Marquis Founders Dinner, I waspleased to see Bruce Maggin and RichGrossman ’64, both of whom are myformer fraternity brothers and trusteesof the <strong>College</strong>. We also met with MattHyde, the new director of admissions,and Linda Arra ’74, the director ofcareer services, both of whom updatedus on their respective areas and theimpressive group of students at <strong>Lafayette</strong>.At the cocktail hour and dinner, I wasalso pleased to see Ed McNally andIrv Brand ’64.Garrett Brown, who is chief judgeof U.S. District Court for the District ofNew Jersey, delivered the 29th AnnualChief Justice Joseph Weintraub Lectureat Rutgers School of Law–Newark.Garrett spoke on “Methods of DisputeResolution.” Appointed to the federalbench by President Ronald Reagan,Garrett was sworn in Jan. 31, 1986, andhas been chief judge since 2005. Garrettplanned to retire from his position thispast January. He obtained his law degreefrom Duke University School of Law andbegan his legal career as a law clerk to theHonorable Vincent S. Haneman of NewJersey Supreme Court. He was with theU.S. Attorney’s office, District of NewJersey, from 1969 until 1973, and thenpracticed with Stryker, Tams and DillLLP. Garrett served as general counselfor the U.S. Government Printing Officefrom 1983 until 1985, was appointedchief counsel for the U.S. MaritimeAdministration in 1983, and was namedacting maritime administrator in 1985.John Oskam passed away Aug. 11.He was a starting offensive linemanon our football team and played inthe 100th game against Lehigh.John worked in the mining industryfor 40 years. He started his career atKennecott Copper in Hayden, Ariz.,for which he was senior engineer. Hebecame superintendent of operationsfor Barton Mines, North Creek, N.Y.,and over the next 14 years rose to theposition of vice president of operationsand engineering. With a move in 1981 toLakeland, Fla., John became managerand subsequently vice president ofVermont Talc Co., an ancillary of SwissownedPluess-Staufer. After the sale ofVermont Talc, Pluess-Staufer asked himto move to the Far East to becomemanaging director of Asia–Pacific.John established joint ventures in Korea,Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia, whileliving in Hong Kong.
