Class Notes1960tapped me, as a fellow Zoo member, tohelp publish the 1959 Melange. Paulwas business manager and sold enoughads to keep us out of the red. He wasactive on campus, especially in editingThe Lafayette, in which he showedcourage with and tolerance for myliterary rantings.Paul authored at least two books.His biography of Butch van BredaKolff was particularly interesting.Before he moved to Florida, Paullived in Chatham, N.J., and attendedevery home football and basketballgame. He has demonstrated a caringdevotion to Lafayette and the Class of’60. Sidelined now for health reasons,Paul is still the consummate Leopardsupporter and, thankfully, a fountain ofknowledge and history for me. Thankyou, Paul, for a job well done. Hewas writing a book, Management andLeadership Changes for the New Economy.I keep looking for it at Barnes & Noble,but I suspect that Ed’s new grandson,Erawan, takes time away from hiswriting. Married50 years, the Hursts had a July 9gala celebration at Renault Winery’sTuscany House Hotel near AtlanticCity, N.J. Jim also celebrated his 75thbirthday at the event. His five childrenand 12 grandchildren gave him a threewheeledmotor scooter, which Maureeninsists on calling his “tricycle” while hiskids insist he wear a helmet. Jim retiredin 1995 from Woolworth Corp. and a20-year daily commute from PrincetonJunction, N.J., to New York City.Maureen, a registered nurse, retiredfrom Johnson & Johnson in 2001.The Hursts live in Ocean View, Del.Contact them at maihurst@aol.com.Carol and I met Bob and SheilaBrodie, recently returned from a tourof Scotland, at the Capital DistrictLafayette–Lehigh luncheon. Dunc practices law at Forsythe,Howe, O’Dwyer, Kalb & Murphy inRochester, N.Y., where he has beenmanaging partner for the past 20 years.He met Alice in third grade (she was infirst) in Larchmont, N.Y. Their twochildren carried on the legal gene,with daughter Pam married to AndyMcGaan, an attorney, and son Jeffworking as associate general counselat United Health. Dunc is a trusteeof Roberts Wesleyan College andNortheastern Seminary. He also hasserved on a panel advising Lafayettestudents considering law school.Old number 64, Gary Schulz,has been “in the harness for 60 years”and plans to retire from his part-timeHome Depot job in Windham, Maine.Continuing the family football tradition,Gary’s son and grandson were alsocollege gridders.Recalling Gary had a number ofpart-time jobs and a wife and son whileat Lafayette struck a chord with me,and we compared notes. I learned thatthe Schulzes bought their first housejust a few miles from my new residencein Burnt Hills, N.Y. At the time, Garywas a zone manager for Sears, havingstarted with the company right afterschool. After having to explain whereI lived to family, friends, and clients, itwas good to find someone who knewwhere I was.Gary expressed something I hearfrequently: a desire to return to theCollege “one last time, see all thechanges, and revisit old haunts.”The first fellow freshman I met atLafayette was Don Ohnegian. He and Iformed the “Big 10,” which could bestbe described as an “anti-Calumet specialinterest group.” Meeting at the oldpower plant near Jenks Hall, we hatchedelaborate midnight schemes, whichcame to naught. Don joined Delta TauDelta, played football at guard, graduatedwith a bachelor’s in government andlaw, served his Army time, finishedRutgers School of Law, and finallymarried Betsy. (She was all he talkedabout when I first met him.) Theyhave three children, Debra OhnegianBennett ’90, Scott (Amherst, 1992),and Peter ’94, who served as Lafayette’sstrength coach after graduation.Sadly, Don succumbed to cancerDec. 13, 2010, at his home in Ramsey,N.J. As I lived in Ramsey when hebecame ill, I visited him. He hadcontinued practicing law and was activein town government and county politics.Since both of Don’s sons playedfootball, the family established a scholarship,the Donald C. Ohnegian ’60Memorial Scholarship Fund forLeadership, which will be awardedto an outstanding football playerfor his senior year. The scholarshipis administered by CommunityFoundation of New Jersey.Bill Kindig passed away July 24 inBinghamton, N.Y. Recruited forfootball, Bill came to Lafayette as amember of the Class of ’55. He wentinto the Air Force for four years and“got it all together” while serving inJapan and playing football. He returnedto Lafayette in 1957, married Peggy,and moved into the cluster ofapartments and houses on SpringGarden Street.Blessed with a wife who was a mathteacher and knew calculus, Billgraduated as an electrical engineer andwent straight to General Electric,working as a manager in the missileguidance control system program.Retiring in 1988, he and Peggy filledtheir lives with travel, grandchildren,and two special interests: they deliveredcountless meals in their 21 years withMeals on Wheels of Western BroomeCounty while also running an antiqueshop, Lady Paydacker, for 15 years froma converted barn in Greene, N.Y.Residents of Endicott, N.Y., Billand Peggy lived in the same housethey started in originally “just for fiveyears,” as Bill said. He earned the Ernest G.Smith ’94 Award. Doug Hobby wonthe Elmer E. Huhn ’24 Award, which ispresented to the correspondent whoactively seeks out and includes in thecolumn many classmates from diverseregions and walks of life.Ed Auble, who chairs theInternational Alumni Committee, isworking with the Class LeadershipCommittee and members of Lafayette’sfaculty to engage a speaker (a wellknowneconomist or highly rankedcorporate leader) for the InternationalSpeaker Series, which the class funded asits reunion gift. Geesey noted that, as ofDecember, our class’ contributions tothe College actually were running aheadof last year’s total.Ed was elected auditor for histownship in November—his first politicaloffice. Since he was a candidate for bothparties, he won handily, 2,250 to 17.Scott Payne is active in twobusinesses he owns: a rep companyselling technical products to themedical, automotive, aerospace/defense,materials handling, and other specialtymarkets and a business marketing carbonproducts to the glass container industry.Scott wants to remain in contact withDalton Marks and Bob Oldt.Hank Lorish is undergoing chemotreatment for a rare blood cancer.While noting things have improvedsomewhat, he is not yet venturing farfrom home.The class was well-represented atLafayette’s opening football game withNorth Dakota State in Fargo inSeptember. George Benson traveledfrom New Jersey to attend, and JohnSutter had only a 45-minute drive fromhis summer lake house in Minnesota.Class Notes1961Auble, Benson, Hobby, and EdBaumgardner were spotted at theLafayette–Lehigh game.Dick Webster and wife Yvonne spenta sunny afternoon in August with Jim“Stinger” Westkott and his wife, Nancy,at the latter’s home outside Providence,R.I. Jim plays serious softball in a seniorleague and swims to stay in shape.John Bull sent a press clippinghighlighting the travels of son Bill ’85with the Peace Corps. Bill has spentmost of his time with the organizationin Madagascar and Africa. John retiredfrom the Philadelphia Inquirer, forwhich he was an editor, and lives inCenter City, Philadelphia, Pa.Larry Cassel lives in the Cityby the Bay and enjoys travel, friends,and family.John Cunningham and his familyown six licensed seats for the New YorkGiants. Now retired, John and wifeBarbara live in Westchester County,N.Y., and participate in a number ofcharity events.Bob Bogart, Bridgewater (N.J.)Township’s administrator, wasinterviewed by the Newark Star Ledgerabout township cleanup activitiesfollowing the October 2011 storm.Hugh Richardson has had a mostinteresting and rewarding avocation—basketball refereeing. He refereed inthe 1972 and 1976 Olympics. Henow referees high school basketball andis an evaluator of referees for EasternCollege Athletic Conference. He alsocoaches three sports at Portsmouth(R.I.) Abbey School. Hugh retiredfrom the international division ofEastman Kodak Co., for whichhe was a marketing director.
