At Honeywell, Iworked on character recognition studies,developed ferrite/ceramic magneticheads and a disk drive motor, andconducted head position servo stabilitystudies for an IBM-compatible diskdrive. Honeywell later transferred thedivision to Oklahoma City. Deciding tostay in the Boston area, I left Honeywelland worked for a start-up company,Helitron, and developed a linear motorfor a floppy disk drive and associatedcontrol system. Due to a recession,Helitron went out of business. Isubsequently got a job with MohawkData in Herkimer, N.Y., where I workedon tape drive stability problems. Afterliving in the Boston area for sometime, Herkimer didn’t seem quiteright for me, and I found employmentwith Ampex, in Redwood City, Calif.”At Ampex, Hu worked on severalbreakthrough technical developments,including designing high frequencyswitching power supplies, linear andbrushless motors, and phase-lockedcontrol systems for capstan motorsand scanners, plus tracking multiplerecording /playback head trajectoriesin video recorders. He subsequentlytook a number of postgraduate coursesand wrote a paper, “A Study of Impulseand Sinewave Frequency Responsesfor a Basic Digital Control System,”which was presented at the GSPxand International Signal ProcessingConference in Dallas in 2003.
