We are just five weeks from the end of
the season and this month kicks off
against Paul Ince’s Reading who sit just
four places and three points behind us
in the Championship.
I anticipate a close game, with Reading
also looking for as many points as possible
in this final stretch, with reports
of a possible further points deduction
looming over their heads. At present,
the EFL is determining if the club has
complied with the terms of an agreed
business plan requirement by the end
of the season.
The Royals had struggled for results
in the weeks leading up to the international
break, but so had Nigel Pearson’s
side. We won one of our five games in
March, coincidentally our only home
game of the month - the 2-0 win over
Blackpool.
With that in mind, it’s great to get back
to Ashton Gate, with this our first of the
final four home games of the 2022/23
campaign. Where has the time gone?
Since we played Blackpool, goalkeeper
Nikita Haikin decided to return to FK
>4 THE ROBINS READING

Good afternoon and a warm welcome
back to Ashton Gate for Saturday’s match
against Reading.
It’s nice to have the squad back together
after a much-needed break and now
everyone is focused on these final eight
games of the season.
Our aim is to finish as well as we can.
When we look back on what we’ve
achieved so far, we’ve developed as a
team but we are still searching for more
consistency. Now we want a good run of
performances and some positive results to
go with them.
That will be Reading’s ambition as well.
Paul Ince has a great group of talented
players there who I’m sure will play with
a point to prove, regardless of what may
be going on off the pitch. We’re looking
forward to the challenge against an
opponent who we expect to be more direct,
but we are well prepared for it.
The international break came at a good
time for us. We had run out of steam a
little bit and been a bit thin on the ground
in terms of the number of players available
for selection. That has taken its toll
somewhat but the players responded as
best as they could and their togetherness
has been apparent.
We have made some good progress but
we have still got a long way to go before
we become the type of side that is really
knocking very hard on the door for success
and succeeding at this level.
It’s great to have some of the injured lads
back in training now too. Tommy Conway
and Matty James are available, Kal
Naismith has progressed well and Tomas
Kalas is back on the grass. We have
options but of course we can’t rush the
players back too soon. It’s important when
you make that transition from being out for
a while that you’re not just thrown into the
deep end.
Now it’s all about rallying ourselves for the
final push and it will be interesting to see
what we can do over the coming weeks
with your incredible support, starting
against Reading.
It has also been fantastic to see Season
Tickets selling at a record pace for next
season with over 7,000 supporters already
securing their seats at Ashton Gate.
Thank you for your support and I hope you
enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige.
WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO
THE CHALLENGE AGAINST AN
OPPONENT WHO WE EXPECT TO
BE MORE DIRECT, BUT WE ARE
WELL PREPARED FOR IT.
Reading narrowly avoided relegation
last season, when they finished four
points from safety despite a six-point
deduction which the club received for
breaching financial rules.
Now the Royals find themselves
lingering in the lower regions of
the division at this late stage in the
campaign, with the possibility of a
further six-point penalty - suspended
as part of the overall 12-point
deduction ruling - following ongoing
investigations.
It would be a real blow to their
chances of survival, with Paul Ince’s
side currently nine points adrift of the
relegation zone prior to Saturday’s
encounter in BS3.
They’re not in the best of form either.
Last time out was a 1-1 draw with
Hull City which brought a four-game
losing streak to an end. While our last
victory came against at Blackpool,
coincidentally so too did Reading’s last
win. They beat the Seasiders 3-1 in
late February, albeit at the Select Car
Leasing Stadium, thanks to a Tom Ince
brace and Andy Carroll’s second-half
penalty.
But on the road, Reading have not
picked up a single point in this calendar
year, with just three wins on their
travels all season. You have to go as
far back as December 30th when they
drew at Norwich, prior to that were
victories at Hull City in November,
Wigan Athletic in September and
Millwall in August.
Carroll’s goal helped to stop the rot at
least prior to the international break,
as they now prepare for the run-in with
four teams in the top half of the table
still to play, including league leaders
Burnley.
As for Saturday, Ince will be without the
suspended FC Porto loanee Mamadou
Loum, who has 11 bookings and one
red card to his name. He is serving a
suspension after his straight red card
received for headbutting Sam Gallagher
during their defeat at Blackburn Rovers.
It’s been another challenging season
and one manager Ince said has
been “injures galore, it’s been so up
and down” in a chat with BBC Sport.
However, he is remaining optimistic
adding “we have got to keep going with
just a few games left - we have to be
positive.”
Harvey Wiles-Rich
>14 THE ROBINS READING

Harvey Wiles-Richards is dreaming of his City debut having
recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the club
until 2024, with terms including a one year’s option beyond next
summer.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper feels
here is where he belongs and is
keen to push on.
He said: “Its been the dream of
mine to play professionally at the
highest level week-in, week-out
and to put that shirt on will be a
reality check. I feel that chance
is getting closer and I’m fully
ready for it. To walk out in front of
those fans will be an unbelievable
feeling.”
He is a first team member but has
certainly had to be patient this
for the opportunity when it comes.
“Nikita leaving left me the ‘second
spot’, but the fans don’t know
much about me. There hasn’t
been much of them to see from
me apart from Under-21s games
but they see the potential in me,
it’s nice to know they are willing to
support me.
“Playing in goal is one of the
hardest positions, you really have
to bide your time. Chances don’t
come around much unless there’s
injuries or a sending off and I’ve
But now Wiles-Richards finds
himself with the chance to
compete for the spot between the
sticks, and he’s more than ready
been third choice for a while but
I’ve been with the first team a
that opportunity. I have a lot to
prove but I’m confident that when
I’m needed I will be ready to play.
I’m fit, I’m ready for when it comes
both hands.
put its trust in me, especially after
having come back from an injury
like that. It was reassuring, it was
a confidence booster and I feel
needed and wanted at the club.”
Wiles-Richards, who looks to
Manchester City and Brazil
goalkeeper Ederson as inspiration,
has been named on the bench nine
times since 2021, and travelled
with the squad on multiple
occasions, all valuable experiences
for the young keeper.
“It’s been massive,” he explained.
“To be travelling around the
country, even as third choice
keeper, seeing the packed-out
stadiums and being in that
atmosphere, is a massive step
up from where I was a couple of
years ago. I have gained a lot of
confidence just being on the bench
a few times last season, I know
what it feels like and I’ve enjoyed
those experiences.
“I’m quite confident as a person
anyway, but those experiences
have been massive for me and I
just keep working hard to earn the
right to play.”

Andreas Weimann edged closer to his milestone 50th goal for the club
as he set us on our way to victory.
He opened the scoring to net his first goal since November, before Alex
Scott doubled the lead in the second half.
City dominated possession and had made their intentions known early as
we sought a return to winning ways.
Nigel Pearson said: “We’ve had to wear them down, we did do that but by
KENILWORTH ROAD | WED, MAR 15TH 2023
SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP | ATTENDANCE: 9,899
The Hatters held on to a single early goal through Carlton Morris.
A wet and windy Kenilworth Road was the setting for City midweek clash
with Luton Town and the visitors were unsettled in the early proceedings.
The Robins were caught looking to play the ball out from the back as Cody
Drameh’s whipped ball into the area was emphatically headed home by
Morris in the middle.
City were energised after the break but would come away empty-handed.
FORMER PLAYERS
Association
CONTACT: NEIL.PALMER@BCFCFORMERPLAYERS.CO.UK
A very warm welcome back to Ashton Gate after what seems
an age, particularly with the two away games recently against
Luton Town, Swansea City and the international break.
Today we welcome Reading Football Club to Ashton Gate and in
particular members of the Reading Former Players Association
who are here as our guests. It’s been very beneficial for us to
reach out to other club’s Players Associations as it can be a
good way of sharing ideas in terms of fundraising and also
suggestions that will provide better experience for everyone.
This was the case at our last away game against Swansea City,
where we were invited to share the day. Along with our FPA team
of myself, Patch Warner and Matthew Withers, we were joined
in South Wales by our ambassadors Tom Ritchie, Paul Cheesley,
Trevor Tainton and Gerry Sweeney. We were made to feel very
welcome and our thanks go to everyone at Swansea City.
Another welcome I would like to pass on today is for former
midfielder Andy May (pictured right) who joins us in the Legends
Lounge. Andy played more than 100 games for us in the early
1990s and was a popular player with the fans before leaving for
Millwall.
Today will be the first time Andy has been back to Ashton Gate
in over 20 years so I’m sure he will receive a great reception from
you all.
Finally, I know FPA stalwart Scott Davidson (pictured top right
with Scott Murray would like to thank everyone for their kind
words after a fantastic day celebrating his 60th birthday at the
recent home game against Blackpool. Let’s hope the result is the
same and we end today with three more points towards our end
of season total.
Many thanks,
SATURDAY, 12TH APRIL 1930
DIVISION TWO
Ref: WP Harper (Stourbridge) Att: 8,406
In their endeavours to escape from the jaws of relegation,
a lifeline for bottom of the table City came from Dickie’s
long-range free-kick, which hit the crossbar. Pipe handled
the rebound and Homer scored from the resultant
penalty. Overall though it was a poor game between two
struggling and very ordinary sides.
Today’s cartoon comes from the Bristol Evening World
of the 14th April 1930, a publication which sparked off
a newspaper war in Bristol. It first appeared on the 1st
October 1929, but it was resented by much of the local
public as it eventually brought about the death of the Bristol
Evening News, Bristol Times & Mirror, and the Bristol
Evening Times & Echo, as well the end for their Pink ’Un
and Green ‘Un sports papers.
Morgan 18
ST MARY’S | SUN, MAR 26TH 2023 | BARCLAYS WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
Lauren Smith praised City’s togetherness as they
bounced back from defeat to beat Southampton 1-0 in
the Barclays FA Women’s Championship.
A spectacular Ffion Morgan strike was enough to
separate the sides on the South Coast, but the Robins
had to remain resolute until the very end.
Following a 2-0 defeat to London City Lionesses last
time out, Smith’s pride was evident at the response
from her players.
“We asked for a team performance and we got it,” she
said. “It wasn’t pretty at times. We had to go and clear
our lines, defend well and manage the time well, it was
a great team performance and I’m proud of it.
“We’ve spoken on a number of occasions about our
clean sheets and how important they are and I think
you can see that with the saves Fran Bentley made
today.
“The team thrive off those moments as well because it
was a tough game where we had to defend really hard
and then get up after the long balls at the other end.
“As a group we wanted to make sure we responded
to the defeat last week and what a way to make that
happen.”
City now have just four games of their league
campaign remaining. They sit top of the division, six
points ahead of their promotion-chasing rivals London
City Lionesses.
Goalscorer Morgan said: “Last week you could have
questioned our attitude and work-rate, which is not like
us at all so we wanted to put that right this week. It
showed with the effort from everyone on the pitch and
we started really well - everyone is fighting for their
shirts now and that’s the way it should be.
“Coming to the end of the season, that’s what it’s
about - competing. And we can’t let it slip now, work
rate is a given which was on show today.”
Smith’s side are next in action on Sunday (April 2nd)
when they face Sheffield United (3pm) at the Robins
High Performance Centre.
Morgan from Bristol Rovers.
This was City’s second season
in Division Four and they were
desperate for promotion. Hovering
around the top four promotion
places, the two signings were a
timely boost and both debuted
at league leaders York City on
3rd March. Morgan scored City’s
equaliser and Curle showed
“touches of skill and blinding pace”
according to Cooper. Later Cooper
credited City’s promotion to these
two signings.
In the following pre-season, Curle
was tried in defence and midfield
but a red card at Cheltenham Town
meant he was unavailable at the
start of the season.
He did not make a league start until
2nd October when he was brought
in as centre-half. He said: “Playing
in defence means I am much more
involved in the game…a winger can
Keith Curle
feel very lonely…I think I have the
pace to do well at the back and I
get much more satisfaction playing
there.”
He made 36 more starts in that
position as City finished 5th but lost
out in the play-offs.
The 1985/86 season was a good
one with City going to Wembley and
beating Bolton Wanderers 3-0 in the
Freight Rover Trophy. Curle made 44
league appearances and scored his
only City goal - the day after his first
son was born - in the 3-1 win over
Newport County at Ashton Gate.
With one minute left on the clock,
he glided 70 yards to score with the
coolest of side-footed finishes.
Curle made 38 league appearances
1986/87 as City finished 6th but
again failed in the play-offs. He
made just three appearances
1987/88 before being transferred to
Reading in Division Two.
After one season and 40 league
appearances for the Royals, he
joined ‘The Crazy Gang’ Wimbledon,
then came the big £2.5million move
to Manchester City. Within a year
he had won three caps for England
in 1992.
He was most recently manager of
Hartlepool United until his dismissal
just a matter of weeks ago.
MIKE ADAMS
0-1
SCORE: READING 0-1 BRISTOL CITY
DATE: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH 2017
PLAYED: MADEJSKI STADIUM
COMPETITION: CHAMPIONSHIP
ATTENDANCE: 18,650
SCORER: FLINT
CITY LINE-UP: FIELDING, VYNER, FLINT, BAKER, BRYAN, O’DOWDA
(PACK 89), BROWNHILL, SMITH, PATERSON, DIÉDHIOU (LEKO 70), REID.
Aden Flint was making his first start of the season following a transfer
window full of speculation which ultimately came to nothing and his
late strike here, following seven straight defeats against the Royals,
ensured a happy journey home for the 3,391 travelling fans.
City manager Lee Johnson was in the Robins side which had last beat
Reading in October 2010 at Ashton Gate and only Zak Vyner remains of
the current squad who played in this game in 2017.
The Robins fashioned goal attempts early on for Famara Diédhiou and
Bobby Reid but from then on the Royals made the running with Republic of
Ireland U21 international Liam Kelly prominent. He summoned a shot from
distance, saved by keeper Frank Fielding diving right. His second attempt
had Fielding diving left but the Royals had one moment of panic as a lazy
back-pass saw keeper Vito Mannone scrambling back to see the ball just
clear a post.
After the break, Kelly’s shot inside the area was going wide but headed
clear to Leandro Bacuna whose effort was pushed round his left post by
the diving Fielding. Then Korey Smith stole possession in the centre circle
and powered forward to feed Jamie Paterson making a run in the area but
he pulled his shot wide.
Icelandic international Jon Dadi Bödvarsson then contrived the ‘missof-the-game’
when the ball was cut back to him seven yards out and he
scuffed it wide.
With six minutes to go, the Royals would pay dearly for squandered
chances and Flint would demonstrate why he had been in such demand.
Vyner put an innocuous free-kick into the D; Paterson tussled with a
defender; and the ball rolled into the path of Flint, whose snap shot found
the corner of the net via Mannone’s glove.
PLAYERS UNITED IN SUPPORT OF
charity football match
A host of former players will join
forces in Bristol next month for a
charity football match in support of
Marcus Stewart.
The former City and Rovers forward
has been diagnosed with Motor
Neurone Disease (MND) and
the match will be played to raise
funds for the Darby Rimmer MND
Foundation.
The charity game will be played at
the Memorial Ground on Saturday,
May 13th featuring a South West
Legends side and an All-Star XI.
Marcus said: “This is going to be a
celebration of football. There will be
big names on the pitch at The Mem
in May to lend their support and
I just hope they brush up on their
Bristolian before the game so they
can understand what’s being said on
the terraces!”
Louis Carey, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt
and Jill Scott are among the list of
names set to dust off their boots for
the occasion.
Since his diagnosis, Marcus and
his wife Louise, operating as Team
Stewart, have worked tirelessly
to raise funds for the charity and
highlight public awareness of MND.
They have, to date, raised over
£80,000 of their £100,000 target.
The Darby Rimmer Foundation
was launched by former Liverpool,
Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers
player Stephen Darby and his close friend Chris Rimmer, a former British
Forces Veteran, both of whom were diagnosed with MND. The aim of the
charity is to raise awareness of the illness and to help to raise funds to
facilitate research into it, with the aim of finding a cure.
Tickets are available now. Disabled and carer tickets are available for this
fixture. These are to be booked through our supporter services manager
Clare, who is available Mondays and Thursdays on 0117 9096648 or via email
BRISTOL CITY UNDER 21S
Academy
City have moved above Sheffield
United in their Premier League
Cup group after hitting four past
the Blades at the Robins High
Performance Centre last week.
Goals from Seb Palmer-Houlden
and Dylan Kadji, plus a brace from
Sam Bell, secured a dominant win
for the Robins.
Blades striker Daniel Jebbison
fired over the first chance of the
game and Andre Brooks shot
straight at Stefan Bajic shortly
after, before Palmer-Houlden
rounded keeper Callum Hiddleston
after just ten minutes.
City continued to threaten and
Sam Bell got his goal just before
half time when he brought down
a through-ball and slotted into the
far corner to double City’s lead and
round off a solid first half.
The Blades were the quicker
winger Owen Hampson having
a shot from the edge of the box
back and secured an impressive
three-goal cushion as Bell latched
onto another ball, skipped past the
keeper, and rolled the ball home
from a tight angle.
Hiddleston denied Sam Pearson
and Harry Leeson from adding to
the scores, but there was to be no
stopping Kadji who did exactly that
when he poked home from close
range after the ball fell kindly to
him from a free-kick.
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
In the last programme (Blackpool, 11/3/2023) I looked at how good quality reproduction memorabilia in
Treasures of the World Cup covered the history of the tournament. However, here’s a title from 1998 that
hones in on one subject: England - The Alf Ramsey Years.
Many books have been published, either about the glorious summer of 1966 and the World Cup victory or just
about the man who guided the national side to claim soccer’s greatest prize. This publication not only combines
those 11 years of Ramsey at the helm of the Three Lions, but uniquely adds eight pieces of reproduction
memorabilia about the man who changed the whole set-up of England at all levels. Here’s what he said upon his
appointment on 25th October 1962:
“I shall have complete control of
the England team, Youth teams
and the Under-23 international
side. It’s a new position. This
kind of thing has never been tried
before and I think it is a position
whereby we’ll have to find out what
we can do. It is something that has
to be established and something
that one has to find out about.”
Looking back now, it is amazing
that not only was all this put into
place whereby Ramsey selected
his team and instructed them how
to play to his pattern of play, but
brought unprecedented success
inside four years.
Within the 98-pages of this unique
publication from Chameleon
This complete record of Sir Alf Ramsey includes the results and line-ups of every England match
under his guidance.
>40 THE ROBINS READING

Books (in association with The Memorabilia Pack Company) is the story of Sir Alf’s brave new world from almost
60 years ago, through to failing to qualify for the West Germany finals in 1974.
It’s littered with quotes too, such as this following England’s failure to beat Poland at Wembley in 1973 that cost
them that place:
“I think in life one has so many disappointments. The team played so well and have nothing to show for it. We
failed in front of goal. In both matches against Poland, England have been the better team. We just didn’t have the
luck. We certainly did not take our chances. I don’t think I have seen a better performance by a visiting country at
Wembley.”
And remember, Sir Alf played at full-back when England famously capitulated 6-3 to Hungary in November 1953.
The eight pieces of memorabilia appear random by choice, but have been selected to represent Ramsey’s highs
and achievements:
Hat-trick: The tribute dinner was held at the
same venue where the heroes of 1966 received a
banquet (left); the 1966 final programme (centre)
and the rare player’s booklet of do’s and don’ts:
Bring your own towels and gym shoes, but all
players are forbidden to comment on matches on
TV or radio.
Well read: One of many newspapers from the day after the afternoon before.
• Song sheet of Back Home, the 1970 World Cup anthem
ANYONE WHO ENTERS THE PITCH WITHOUT
PERMISSION AND THOSE CARRYING OR USING
SMOKE BOMBS OR PYROS WILL NOW RECEIVE
AN AUTOMATIC CLUB BAN.
‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
